'Elsa' Book Tour - Review

Elsa

Elsa Baum dreamed of moving away from Germany a country she had watched everyday being dragged deeper into war by Adolf Hitler.

Everyone was under his spell, listening and believing in everything he told them. Elsa and her close friends were the exception, they despised the Nazi’s and were soon to learn the extent of their hatred towards others they considered a threat to their ideology of the perfect superior race. After a chance meeting with the daughter of a high ranking Nazi, feelings developed and she found herself a part of the minority the Nazis were trying to eradicate.

“I don’t want my story to inspire people nor make them sad; I want it to educate them because hate, homophobia and racism still exist today, and although the chance of another event like the Holocaust is rare; the world will never be rid of the foundations that cause hatred among us.

— Elsa Baum”

**My thoughts**

This is a book that caught me off guard. I love stories about the Holocaust. It is a sick obsession of mine and so many others, that began back in the days of reading about Anne Frank. The horrors faced by those persecuted by the Nazis are still unimaginable to me, no matter how much I have read and seen.

The majority of those tortured were the Jews. Little attention has been given to those who were theoretically a part of the pure Aryan race, until they did something to shame their families. Elsa and her friends were the daughters of fine upstanding officers in the Nazi regime. Their love and acceptance of each other and those who were different caused them to lose everything. In a time where we strive to love everyone for who they are and to accept those who are different, it is frightening to fathom being tortured or even killed for those beliefs. It does still happen today, all over the world.

The timeline of this book is quite rushed, yet feels so much longer. You will be appalled by the horrors endured by Elsa and her friends. You may even shed a few tears with them and for them. You will reexamine your own beliefs and outlook on the world and this haunting time in history.

The ArimatheanThe Arimathean

Alex Donovan survived battle against insurgents in Afghanistan, and again in Zurich against a fallen angel. Now he must fight for his soul, drawn into a war that has waged across the centuries between angels and demons for control of a legendary relic more valuable than the Shroud of Turin.

Gaspar de Rouse, a mere man with the gift – or curse – of immortality, is the latest in a long line of devoted guardians who have protected the secret for two thousand years. He received his sacred duty centuries earlier, passed down through generations of Knights Templar, to serve as The Arimathean.

Gaspar enlists a reluctant Alex into the conflict when Alex inherits his grandfather’s estate, which includes the historical records of the legend and ownership of an abandoned medieval church.

From ancient Jerusalem to the mountains of France, from the coast of Maine to the canals of Venice, the clues unfold, the mystery deepens, the final showdown looms as good and evil clash yet again over a relic so powerful, if it even exists, its exposure would rip apart the modern world.

Trinity Evans and Xoe Xanders

ISBN: 9781301487264
ASIN: B009DB2VOU

Number of pages: 185 pages through Kindle
Word Count: 60,000 words

Cover Artist: Xoe Xanders

Book Description:

As frontman of up-and-coming rock band, High Velocity, werewolf Zane Alexander has everything a man could want: Fame, fortune, friendship, and a pack to call home. Well, almost everything. Despite being able to take his pick of pretty much any woman, he wants the one girl he can’t have—the one girl who’s eluded his every advance.

Charlie Banks has always had a thing for Zane, but being the band’s head of security, she knows firsthand just the sort of guy he is. She’s determined not to become just another notch on his bedpost, but if doesn’t stop the want for a mate curling in her gut. It’ll happen, someday—it just won’t be Zane. She’s decided that it’s time to leave High Velocity, to find a nice little home and settle down to live the rest of her life, away from sexy smiles and ripped bodies of rock stars.

But when someone threatens Zane’s life, she’s the only one he wants to protect him. Except, Zane has a hidden agenda. One that involves claiming Charlie as his mate, once and for all.

Read an excerpt:
Breathing in short, sharp breaths, Zane followed her through the winding corridors of the Richter Stadium, past the women’s bathrooms and down a flight of stairs. He held his breath for a moment as he slid through the remaining security crew. His golden eyes zeroed in on the whipcord lean beauty, a few dark curls coiling down from the sensible bun she always wore it in.
She stopped, hesitating right outside the doors. Two more steps and he’d lose her to the nightlife, his identity keeping him from following her any farther. If fans saw him, his life would become a hurricane of screams and groping hands. He wasn’t in the mood to put on his usual charming-playboy air to deal with them and he knew that going furry on their asses would damage his career.
Now or never. As she stepped out, he lurched forward, his pulse pounding furiously at his throat, and he crossed the floor in three strides. His fingers curled around her shoulders, firm and commanding, though he knew she hated it when he pulled the alpha role. She spun and her lips formed a thin line, as if she’d been expecting this. She’d known. You couldn’t really lie to pack and get away with it.
“Charlie.” The one word was all he could say before her eyes pinned him. They were pale as a sheet of blue ice, staring up at him with a gentle ferocity that she’d only ever reserved for him. He had no doubts that she wanted him—he’d smelled it on her in the past, saw the way she looked at him sometimes, as if she was seeing through to his soul—but she was wary. Guarded. The walls around her heart were made of marble and he was left pounding both fists against the cool stone.
“You can’t leave.” His words were a statement. A fact.
“I can and I am,” she replied coolly.
“What about the guys? What about High Velocity? You’re just going to throw it all away?” He was surprised at the intensity behind his words, but he was far from done. “Are we not paying you enough? There’s always ways around that. How much will it take?”
She blew out a harsh expel of air and glanced down at his hand clamped around her arm, but she didn’t bother to pull away. Her winter gaze met his molten gold once more. “I’ve made my decision, Zane. You need to respect it. There comes a time in everyone’s career where they have to make a choice and take a stand. This is it. I’ve put in my notice, I’ve followed protocol. There shouldn’t be a problem.”
A growl slid up his throat, escaping with a rumble. “I don’t give a damn about protocol. You could flash your tits to the crowd if you wanted and we still wouldn’t fire you. I don’t care. You’re part of our group. And, like it or not, you’re part of the pack. My pack.”
“You and I both know that I’ve never really been part of the pack.” Her voice carried a touch of wistfulness. She was right—she’d always been a bit of a loner, keeping herself estranged from the members of Elysium, try as his parents might to welcome her in. But she’d never been distant with Zane and the guys and he wasn’t about to let that happen. Not now.
“You’re staying.”
She lifted a brow. “Since when are you my master?”
“Since you started talking crazy shit about leaving us!” He tamped his anger back down. He never had a temper. What was up with him? He took a deep breath, letting it whistle out his nose as he tried to soften his posture, tried to be less demanding. “We need you. Okay? I respect your decision to quit, but you don’t have to skip town and leave us. Just stay.” Please…
Her smile was tight. She shook her head slowly, like he just didn’t get it, and pulled free of his grasp. “Goodbye, Zane.”
His mind spun, thoughts bouncing off the walls of his head as he tried to scrape ideas together in a last-minute rush. He needed more time. He needed a damn good reason for her to stay, but damn it, he couldn’t think! She turned around, agonizingly slow, and he could see the muscles in her back through the crispness of her suit.
“Charlie. One last night.” His voice was soft, a plea in the undercurrent that he cursed himself for exposing. She stopped and he moved forward until his chest was pressed against her back, one arm wrapping around her waist. He pulled her against him, her body cupping his perfectly, like it was made for him.
She stiffened, but he didn’t let her go. His arm snug around her, he rubbed his chin lightly across the back of her neck, letting the stubble scrape gently against her skin. He murmured in her ear, using the sexiest voice he could muster. His beautiful-girl voice. “Go for a run with me. Tonight. One run.”
He’d figure something out between then and now. He’d get her back.

'A Political Affair' Book Tour - Review

A Political Affair

A Political Affair isn't Fifty Shades of Red, White, and Blue, but it is a love story with spice and political intrigue. Stephen McEvoy never expected to fill his father’s U.S. Senate seat at such a young age—or to fight to keep it. When clever Anne Norwood interns in his office, Stephen dismisses her as another pretty face—until her independent streak catches his attention. They’re both too smart to fall for one another, yet they do. During a tough election, their relationship is an impossible political gamble. Campaigns—like love—are either won or lost.

**My thoughts**

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I started to read this book, but it was better than I had anticipated. The relationship between Stephen and Anne is pure and real, which is quite unlike the scandalous sex situations we have come to expect in political stories. The book almost pokes fun at the stupidity of those scandals, such as Monica Lewinski and Bill Clinton. And it almost gives a middle finger to Washington, showing that true love is still possible and morals don't have to be vacated. It also shows how the political parties can still come together as human beings.

You'll root for them the whole way through, even as others try to get in their way. You'll applaud those who support them. You'll hope that other political alliances can work out so well.

Sex scenes do exist, but are not too steamy, for those who prefer a more modest read.

'The Life and Death of Lily Drake' Book Tour - Review

Welcome to the Inkspell book blog tour for The Life and Death of Lily Drake!

"Fans of Charlaine Harris and TRUE BLOOD will find much to enjoy in Michelle Nelson's cracking, sanguine debut. Dark, funny, audacious and written with a confidence that belies this as her first effort, LIFE AND DEATH OF LILY DRAKE dispenses with the idea that vampires are pasty, maudlin, emo-types and restores them to all their brutal bloodthirsty glory. And in terms of heroines to root for, I daresay Lily Drake gives poor 'ol Sookie a run for her money."

- Kealan Patrick Burke, Bram Stoker Award-Winning author of THE TURTLE BOY and KIN.

For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...

Dating them is the hard part.

Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single mom…until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race.

Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is immersed into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins?

The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. It’s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn?

Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom?

**My thoughts**

I fell in love with Lily, from almost the first page. I found her a relataable character, as we are the same age and hail from the same state. I may not have a 12 year-old son, but I am fiercely protective of my students and friends' kids. I appreciate her drive and desire to only do what is right for her son. I guess the biggest differences between us are that I am not destined to be a vampire hunter and I don't have two hottie vampire cousins fighting over me. (At least not to my knowledge!)

I love how Lily is already a strong character, even before she finds out about her destiny. The truth about her past and her future simply amplifies what is already a part of her. She finds a way to embrace it all on her own terms. The hard part seems to be figuring out where her true loyalties lie in her heart. She has two amazing vampires who are madly in love with her and who seek to care for her. You won't really know for sure whom she chooses until the very end.

The whole book is action-packed and keeps you guessing through its twists and turns. It has plenty of romance that implies sex scenes, instead of steamy play-by-play descriptions that can turn off some readers. The focus is on the story, and it's a good one.

I hope Lily has some more adventures, because she is definitely one of my new favorite heroines.

'See Me' Book Tour!

Welcome to the virtual book tour for 'See Me' by Natalie-Nicole Bates, hosted by Reading Addiction Blog Tours!

Paranormal Romance
Title: See Me
Author: Natalie-Nicole Bates
Date Published: Oct 2012

Carly Anders  is hearing voices in her head. Another one of her kind is trying to contact her. She knows of the malevolent freaks—others who are eternal like her and seek out the weak to inflict pain upon. For years, Carly has held up huge protective walls to keep herself and her secrets safe. Now, physically and mentally exhausted, Carly needs protection and rest.

She accepts the invitation to visit an internet friend who needs help appraising a collection of antique photographs.  The situation is not ideal, but Carly hopes a male presence in her life will deter the determined suitor who haunts her thoughts and dreams.

Daniel Tremont is not what Carly is expecting.

The former funeral director has a secret of his own. Not only is he eternal like Carly, he is her creation from all those years before—her abomination she thought she killed.

Daniel has been searching for Carly for years. He knows she is the piece of his life that he has been missing for so long. Now that he has found her, he has no intentions of letting her go.

Read an excerpt:
Often she thought about herself, what she had become in life after her drowning when she was only four.

A mutant. An abomination. A freak.

She knew there were others like her out there in the world as well. Xander, for example. Even Embree, but Embree was dormant. Carly’s senses told her that Embree was alive, but she was alone and in a very dark place.

Just the thought of what might have become of Embree caused a chill to rise on her skin and she shuddered. Would that happen to her someday, too?

Maybe Daniel was ‘something else’, as well.

Sometimes she would be walking down the street and her eyes would connect with a perfect stranger, and she knew by instinct alone they were different. She knew, and they knew, too. But neither spoke a word. It was in the eyes. Whether they were like her, she was unsure.

And Daniel had those eyes as well. Eyes that had the ability to draw her in if she allowed him. Eyes that were an unusual, ethereal pale blue.

But she didn’t fear him. Although mentally tired, she was physically strong when threatened. That was Xander’s gift to her. Just one encounter with him and she was suddenly able to leap higher, run faster than ever before. If confronted, she was certain she could outmatch her opponent. Knowing her abilities gave her the confidence that helped her cope alone all of these years.

Maybe it was a mistake being here. It wasn’t too late to leave a note of goodbye and leave.

'The War Gate' Book Tour

Welcome to The War Gate, a paranormal romance/thriller with a time-travel twist.

Tag Line: Through a miraculous conception, Avalon Labrador must give birth to herself before she is executed, to solve her husband's murder and her own wrongful conviction.

When the reincarnated Avy Labrador is kicked out of her stepfather's house on her 18th birthday, she has no idea that the man who raised her framed her mother to cover his murder so he could acquire a major software empire. Now, years later, with the help of her magician boyfriend, Sebastian, Avy is about to discover that her birth was otherworldly and for a purpose. The ancient Roman God Janus was so appalled by the heinous murder of Tom Labrador by his brother Drake that he opened up a War Gate.

Avy has received half of her mother's soul light and half of a God's essence. Her mission is to put the real killer behind bars. The only catch: she must learn to “Gate-Walk”, that's time traveling to the layman. She soon finds out that she is a drunk driver on the space/time continuum super highway.

Just when she believes she has too much on her plate to contend with, she learns that she's pegged the wrong man as the killer…her boyfriend is not who he appears to be…and Janus, the so-called God of new beginnings, doorways and gates, just might be the biggest conman and liar she has ever met.

The War Gate has a heavy mystery structure, as well as paranormal/magic and romance elements.

War Gate Author's Note: The antagonist character, Wax Man, is not for the squeamish. I warn you ahead of time that he is the most disgusting, vile creature/human you're ever likely to read about. Not for younger readers under 13.

Blurb:

Excerpt:

He waved a hand in front of her face, but she didn’t blink. The lights are on, but no one’s home.

“Carly, my angel,” he whispered and cupped her cheek into his palm. He revealed in the silkiness and warmth of her skin. Still, she didn’t react. She was almost…a zombie.

His own body jerked in reaction to the fear she was emanating. She was clearly sleepwalking and in the throes of one hell of a nightmare, yet she didn’t cry out any longer. It was all now playing out inside her mind.

“Charlotte, see me,” he implored.

Her lips twitched at the mention of her real name.

“See me,” he repeated.

Suddenly, her body gave way and she collapsed. Catching her, he lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed. As he laid her down, her breathing became ragged. He placed a hand over her heart as it raced, and passed healing calmness through his hand, feeling the energy pulsate against her skin. Beneath his hand, he would feel her heartbeat slow to a normal rhythm.

“Daniel?” Her voice was mere caress.

“I’m here, my angel. You’re having a nightmare. You’re frightened. It’s okay now, I’m here, and I will never leave you,” he promised.

“Everyone leaves, Daniel. You can’t understand, you can’t…” Her body started to tremble.

He climbed onto the bed and straddled her body. Leaning close to her face, he said, “Carly, let go of your fear. I can take it. Let go and see me,” he commanded.

Her breath came out in a whoosh, and a wall of fear and resistance hit him like a blow from above. It wasn’t exactly painful, more startling than anything else.

His vision flip-flopped, and he could see an image from inside her mind of two souls forever entwined as the result of one act. It made perfect sense. She was reliving the day their souls became one. The day of the fire.

He then saw black, suffocating water. She was reliving her own death, as well.

As the visions left him, he was consumed with the mishmash of fear, loneliness, and resistance within her.

He had to make her understand that it was over. “I will never leave you, Carly. That is my promise to you,” he insisted.

A flicker of life ignited in her eyes. Her hands came up to his face, and to Daniel’s surprise, tears bubbled from his own eyes. He was releasing the pain and fear he had absorbed from his beloved.

“I’m so sorry, Daniel, so sorry,” she murmured.

“There’s nothing to be sorry for, my love. It’s over. It’s time to move forward now.”

“You don’t understand what I am, Daniel.”

“I do understand, Carly. I am what you are. See me for what I am.”

In his mind, he could see the moving clockwork gears of her thoughts once again as she tried to process what he was telling her to be true.

“Just accept it, and let’s move forward.”

She drew his face to hers and her lips parted beneath his. Time blurred and he drank in the essence of his Carly. Her soft, barely covered curves molded themselves against his the hard planes of his body. Her hands were under his t-shirt, her fingers stroking him.

If he pressed on, he knew she wouldn’t refuse him. But in her vulnerable state, he wouldn’t let anything progress further that night. Carly needed time to process everything that happened. There was plenty of time to pursue a physical relationship. They weren’t going any where…he hoped.

'The Bachelor Farmers' Book Tour

Book Description:

The Bachelor Farmers is a story about two Norwegian brothers who learn the meaning of love from a most unlikely source. Hans and Jon, the youngest of four immigrant brothers have just inherited land from their recently deceased father. They set out to develop the land, thus perpetuating the family dream of success in America. When Jon learns that the husband of Mahal, a beautiful half-breed Ojibwa woman has been injured on their property and cannot work, Jon hires her and brings her home. Under the eye of his disapproving brother, Jon finds himself falling in love, but when a terrible blizzard blows into town without warning, the three of them must deal with the consequences, and Mahal is forced to make a decision that reshapes their lives in profound and unimaginable ways. The Bachelor Farmers takes us into a world where true meaning and healing are found in the complexity of human relationships and dreams of a better life fuel a family’s drive for success.

What people have said about The Bachelor Farmers.

“Sorrels’ could be described as a fundamental minimalist with descriptions of
characters, scenes, and dialogue but her laconic way works because the story is strong and pulls the reader in, by the middle of the book making it hard to put down. This is a sweet read, a well written read, and a comfort to go to bed with, providing one doesn’t have
to get up early the next morning.”~Paulette, amazon review

“Although each of the main characters is flawed in uniquely human ways, the author treats each of her characters with enormous empathy and warmth – in my opinion, the mark of a true burgeoning talent. I definitely recommend snuggling up with The Bachelor Farmers on a cold winter’s night, or anytime you want to escape to a more romantic time and place.” ~nyc2086, amazon reviewer
**My thoughts**

I was completely drawn into this story from the very beginning. What I liked about it was it relaxed pace, as it gave you time to savor every moment. So many current books are full of a lot of action to keep the pages flying. This story was intriguing enough to make the pages turn out of curiosity about how each character was going to handle their situations. You will find yourself wondering what you would have done in the situation, as you get lost in their story.
