'Shelter From the Storm' by Kristen Ethridge

Blurb:

SOMETIMES THE PERSON STANDING IN YOUR WAY IS YOUR ONLY HOPE

As the director of the Port Provident Animal Shelter, Becca Collins had devoted her life to helping the furriest residents of Port Provident. When a special Labrador retriever, Polly, needs her help on the eve of Hurricane Hope, Becca can’t say no—even if it means she’ll have to ride out the hurricane on Provident Island. When she shows up on the doorstep of local veterinarian and Army veteran Dr. Ross Reeder, Becca throws a wrench into Ross’ plans to evacuate himself and his combat-weary former service dog, Cookie.

Ross and Becca are used to disagreeing with one another, but they soon realize the only way they’re going to survive the wrath of Hurricane Hope is to put their differences aside and work for the good of the animals who depend totally on them. As they discover they have more in common than they thought and work to rebuild the Texas beach town where they’ve both put down roots, Becca learns secrets about her past that threaten to change the whole direction of her life.

As Becca struggles with love, faith, and lies, will she still need the shelter she’s found in Ross’ arms or will the aftermath of the storm take away everything they’ve worked to build?

HURRICANE HOPE: ONE STORM CHANGES PORT PROVIDENT FOREVER…AND FOR GOOD.

Read an excerpt:

“What are you doing here?” Ross knew his greeting sounded more like an outburst, but he was confused and running out of time. There wasn’t really an opportunity for pleasantries. Not that anything was ever pleasant when stubborn, head-in-the-clouds Becca Collins was involved.
“Well hello to you too. I figured you’d be gone by now.”
As usual, she made virtually no sense. “So why are you here? And what are you doing with Polly? Where’s Eloise McCaw?”
A wind gust freed several strands of hair from the front of Becca’s dark ponytail and blew them across her face. She tucked them behind her ear, where they promptly blew askew again. “She’s on a bus to San Antonio with her granddaughter. They wouldn’t let her take the dog.”
“So someone from the city called the shelter?” Ross kept watching the flutter of the wayward locks of hair.
“I volunteered. I was behind them in line. Polly’s owner wouldn’t go unless she knew Polly was safe. But she’s in bad health and couldn’t stay behind with Polly. The shelter is closed. The last dog left the island earlier today, headed up to a shelter in Montgomery County. I was following behind.”
“On the public evacuation bus?”
She pursed her lips and nodded briefly. “Yes. We don’t all make a doctor’s salary. Some of us have to take advantage of other available resources sometimes.”
Ross could hear the bitterness in her words. It was like listening to a lemon.
“What do you need from me?” Now he knew how Becca and Polly came to be together. He still wasn’t sure, though, why they were on his clinic’s porch.
She reached into a bag at her feet and pulled out a folded-up white bag. “Dog food. They didn’t leave me with enough kibble and I’d rather not change Polly’s food if I can avoid it since she’s on a special diet.”
“Dog food? That’s it?” This was far less complicated than most of the plans Becca dreamed up. “I’ve got some in the back. You two can come inside if you’d like.”
Becca shrugged, then leaned over and picked up the bag at her feet. “Okay.”
Ross held the door open as the pair walked in, then went back to re-open the storage room he’d just locked. When he came back, carrying two bags of Polly’s prescription food, he saw Becca standing in front of the television in the waiting room. Her shoulders slumped under the straps of the backpack. Her whole demeanor changed from what it had seemed to be only moments before.
Ross placed the bags at Becca’s feet, and Polly gave each a hearty sniff.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
Becca waved a hand at the TV screen. “They just closed the Causeway. We’re stuck.”
“No, they aren’t closing the Causeway until four. TxDoT had a press conference a couple of hours ago. They won’t close it until the wind hits a certain speed.”
She shook her head and pointed at Rick O’Connell. “It wasn’t the wind. It was the storm surge. Provident Bay is rising faster than they expected. The waves and current are proving to be too much for the Causeway. They are saying there may be structural damage below the surface of the water now. It’s definitely closed. We’re trapped. This is getting a little too real, too fast.”
“Tell me about it.” Ross watched the motion of the gray clouds overhead and the sustained shaking of the branches in the trees. “How about I drive you back to the shelter? I’ve got a truck with four-wheel drive. That should be able to get us through this. The high school isn’t too far away.”
A small light caught in her eyes. They were a rich velvet brown. Ross had never noticed that before.
“You’d do that for me?”
“For Polly,” Ross said, then grinned broadly. “She’s one of my favorite patients.”

#BookReview 'Finding Home' by Mathew Chase

finding home tour banner

Finding Home - Front Cover While safety and peace seem like they should be birthrights, some of us are born into situations that simply don't allow for these niceties. With a father who sold drugs and a mother who depended on them, the world felt anything but calm to author Mathew Chase.

Growing up in one of the toughest parts of Philadelphia, Mathew learned things in his first few years of life that most of us never have to learn, like how to survive hunger when there's no food in the house and no one there to notice . . . how not to cry or show fear while being beat with a shoe by a foster parent . . . how to mask any signs of vulnerability when passing the dealers and gangsters on the street . . . or how to fight when one or a bunch of kids jump you on your way home from school.

Somehow, Mathew knew he had a choice. He could conform to the status quo and become a victim of the mentality generated by this environment, or he could find a way to break free and build a different kind of life. Joining the U.S. military at age 18 as an exit route from what he'd known forever seemed like a promising solution, but it carried an exacting price tag of its own.

Mathew's childhood began to seem like it had been easy compared to the brutality of training and fighting in Iraq while witnessing the slaying of friends who had become like brothers. Would Mathew ever find home? Follow the author's journey through seemingly endless challenges and failures to understand how these selfsame circumstances mold him into a mature and courageous man. In Finding Home, pain and heartbreak are transformed to what they truly are - stepping stones to ultimate strength and personal freedom.

**My thoughts**

Mathew's story is one that you hate to read, because it doesn't seem possible that such horrific abuse still takes place in this day and age. We know it does, but it just seems so archaic. People today are more aware, aren't they? Don't we have bigger movements and help to stop this? Isn't the cycle ever going to end?

At the same time, Mathew is one of those lucky ones who consciously chose to break the cycle. He didn't want to continue down the road his family had started him on. He knew that better was out there and that he wanted to be better. He was also fortunate enough to meet people along his journey who contributed to his life change.

The first part of the book is devoted to Mathew's rocky childhood, dealing with the abuse, drugs, and fighting that permeated every home he ever had. He then goes into more detail about various experiences when deployed in Iraq, stories that none of who who have never been there will never be able to truly understand.

Every experience that Mathew had in his life helped to shape him. He was smart enough to be able to look for the lessons within both the positive and the negative experiences in his life. He sprinkles his wisdom within his stories and provides a summary at the end. If anything, you should take away from his story that you do have the power to alter your destiny and can learn from whatever life throws at you. Look within yourself and fight to persevere.

I did feel at times that he was rambling a bit, stringing together brief synopses of multiple events. Some of that could conceivably be reworked. But, Matthew is the teller of his story. He tells it the way that he wants to. I got the impression that we were hearing Mathew's unique voice through the entire read. It wasn't filtered through anyone else, just raw and true. Many kudos to him for being brave enough to put his story out there.

'Mighty Like a Rose' by Kitty Campanile

Blurb:

“Get out. Get far away if you have to. Don’t leave him for me, leave him for yourself. Even if I never saw you again, if we couldn’t ever be friends, I’ll be happier with that than seeing you every day with you being with him, I’m not saying I would make you happy, Mary, but at least I’d try.”

Mary Ryder is a housewife, her once fiery nature ground down by a life of cleaning and cooking for her drunken husband Nigel. A chance meeting with idealistic mineworker Lewis Evans makes her realise what love can be. But Mary made a commitment to Nigel: for better, for worse.

When the National Union of Mineworkers calls a strike, Mary doesn’t realise it will change her, and the town, forever.

A tale of love, friendship and solidarity, set against the backdrop of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike, Mighty Like a Rose follows Mary on her journey from neat detached house to the front line of the UK’s longest-running industrial dispute.

Read an excerpt:

Just after they crossed the bridge, Lewis steered the motorbike up a farm track, and after a few bumpy minutes he stopped. They overlooked the valley. Behind them were the stepped stones of what was once a sandstone quarry, above it the wall of an abandoned hospital. Both quarry and wall were covered in graffiti. Nobody remembered who had done it or when, but years ago someone had painted “Hollywood” in white letters as high as the wall. Visible from the other side of the valley it had become a source of pride for the town, in a drily humorous way.
Lewis dismounted the bike and took his helmet off. Mary did the same. Carved and painted onto the sandstone were decades worth of lovers' initials, the older ones corroded by the wind and rain. Mary rested against a rock, which was warm from the sun. Behind Lewis the valley lay green, to the south the horizon was dominated by Emley Moor TV mast, a gently curved concrete tower. Mary had used to stare at it out of the classroom window at school. It was the tallest structure in Western Europe, another source of local pride. She knew that just to the right of the mast was Emley Moor pit, and to the left somewhere was Caphouse Colliery. In the middle, lower down on the hill, just the other side of the river, was Thornethorpe colliery. From here the valley looked at peace, you wouldn’t guess there was a strike on looking at the cows grazing sleepily in the green fields.
Lewis looked out over the valley, took a deep breath, then looked at her. “What I said was it’s a bloody shame you’re married.”
Mary looked back at him, agape. He was agitated, pacing about.
“You aren’t happy, Mary. Anyone can see that. It’s a bloody shame that you are married to someone who can’t make you happy. Who won’t, more like. You deserve better.” He looked at her, pleadingly. He was close enough now that Mary could see herself reflected in the molasses of his eyes. “Get out. Get far away if you have to. Don’t leave him for me, leave him for yourself. Even if I never saw you again, if we couldn’t ever be friends, I’ll be happier with that than seeing you every day with you being with him.”
Mary opened her mouth to say something. She felt she should defend Nigel, but she couldn’t. Lewis took one of Mary's hands in his.
“I’m not saying I would make you happy, Mary, but at least I’d try.”
Mary didn’t think. Her mind had stopped working. She stepped towards Lewis and kissed him. Kissed him hard, on the mouth. His lips were soft and full, parting slightly under hers. She cradled his face in her hand, the prickle of his stubble under her fingertips. He responded and pulled her close to him. Pressed close to Lewis, Mary slid her hands under his open leather jacket, feeling the heat of him through his white t shirt. She felt her heart in her throat. She could hardly breathe. After what felt like forever and no time at all they broke the kiss.
“Wow,” said Lewis, “I was expecting you to slap me.”
Mary laughed and buried her face in his shoulder, leaving blue mascara and a lipstick smile on his T shirt. She inhaled deeply, she wanted to fix his scent in her mind. He wrapped his arms around her. Mary felt safe. She looked up at Lewis.
“I can’t just leave him, you know.”
“Why not? I’m sorry, that’s not fair on you. I’ve no idea how things are for you.”
“What would I do? I need time. To work things out. My head’s spinning right now.”
“Take the time you need. I’ll wait. I’ll wait for as long as I have to. I promise.”
They rode back to Tingley Road, Mary holding on to Lewis as tightly as ever. By the time they got back to Lewis’s house, his dad’s car was already parked outside. Mary unlocked her car.
“I should go.” she said.
“I’ll see you soon?”
“Like I said, give me time. Please.”
Lewis nodded solemnly then looked around. There was no-one else on the street and he leaned forward and kissed Mary quickly on the lips.
Mary got into her car and turned the key in the ignition. She felt dizzy. Before she knew it she was parked in her driveway with no memory of the journey back.

Blurb:

Through an unfortunate chain of events and stroke of luck, he is gifted with knowledge that completely changes his life for the better, sending him on a breathtaking journey full of exciting twists and turns, romantic encounters, and incredible highs and lows. A roller coaster journey that would help him discover true love, success and happiness in the process.

Read an excerpt:

They say it’s all about timing.

One month later, Nice suddenly became a different town. I’d met some wonderful people, but they’d gone their own separate ways. I don’t care what anybody says, it’s not the place – it’s the people. I began to wonder if it was where I was supposed to be and the answer seemed simple: I’d go somewhere different and repeat the process.

I boarded my flight, feeling mildly disappointed to be leaving. In love with the French Riviera; the peaceful atmosphere stimulated my creative process, which in turn developed my ability to find happiness in the simple things: good coffee, luxurious farmers’ markets and the sound of classical music being effortlessly played by the talented busker in the square. The divine contentment I felt haunted me in such a way that any slight change in energetic frequency of my surroundings would leave me feeling discontented. But I’d made my decision to leave and was determined to see it through.

Arriving in Barcelona mid-afternoon, I left the cool, air-conditioned terminal building to be greeted by a humid heat, a stark contrast to the warm but breezy environment I’d grown accustomed to. Not much thought had been invested into my decision to move to Spain; I’d done it on a whim having spent numerous summer holidays there when I was younger. I was fond of culture and assumed it would all be much the same: laid back, relaxed, good food and Sangria. Little did I know it’d be like a busy day in Central London during a persistent heatwave.

The warm, muggy air made my clothes stick to my skin as I lugged heavy baggage onto the metro system, causing concern about the decision to leave tranquillity for this bustling sauna to linger in my mind. Perhaps I just needed to give it time, I thought, spending the next few days seeing the city, determined to give the place a chance. There was something misaligned, a subtle anxiety in the pit of my stomach. Had I been looking for a high-paced environment it would have been perfect but I needed somewhere more relaxed, somewhere I could be creative and focussed.

Deciding Barcelona wasn’t home, I searched the web for the cheapest flight available and Amsterdam came up first. Surely it would be more chilled out, I thought. Blissfully unaware of the mayhem that awaited, I booked the flight, and suddenly found myself on the plane just as the thrust kicked in.

‘Fuck, it’s going to be cold there.’ I thought, as the realisation that Amsterdam was geographically parallel to London sank in. Must soldier on, too late to go back now. Before I knew it, I was checking into a hostel as two exceptionally stoned chaps stared at my luminous pink t-shirt and Hawaii style short shorts like I was a fish out of water.

I was, but I’d waste no time in exploring the city, finding my way to Burger King for a Whopper with cheese and regular Coke (I asked for Diet) served by someone so high that health and safety would’ve shut the place down, before continuing onto the nearest Internet ‘café’, where I spent at least twenty minutes hopelessly flicking through the same browser tabs.

Barely able to string a functioning sentence together, I floated my way back to the hostel and climbed into bed and slept like a baby, waking up refreshed and ready to conquer the world. I’d spend the following days half-heartedly looking for an apartment only to realise I lacked the self-discipline required to avoid the seduction of the endless temptations lining the streets. Money was dwindling; gallivanting around Europe was costly, and considering my position I asked myself,

“Where am I was supposed to be?”

Giving up on my journey would have meant giving up on myself – it wasn’t an option. The inevitable impending financial collapse meant I might never have another chance to do this again. However, I recognised that these experiences were all just constant reminders of just how content I was in Nice. Why did I leave? Why did I fear not being able to meet new people, when I’d done it so easily before?

I made the decision; if Rose still had the apartment to rent, I’d catch the next flight back to the South of France. I sent her a text detailing my plans and she responded with the answer I’d been hoping for. Without any hesitation I booked a one-way seven a.m. ticket to where my heart was.

I awoke moments before my alarm, my subconscious mind clearly keeping me on track. Stepping out of bed, careful not to disturb my roommates, I clambered into my clothes and zipped up my suitcase. It was five fifteen a.m. by the time I’d begun my journey to the airport. Things were running smoothly, there was a tram stop just round the corner and I was certain I had plenty of time to catch the five forty-five a.m. train to Schiphol.

I should have known. Things rarely go the way we expect them to. It had slipped my mind to check the tram timetable and I’d made the incorrect assumption they’d be running at that time of the morning. Panic set in, the train station was nearly three miles away and there were no cabs, no buses, nothing.

My only option was to run like a lunatic, dragging my heavy suitcase behind me, desperate not to miss another flight. I arrived at the station with just five minutes to spare, selected the ticket, inserted my debit card into the machine and of all the fucking moments for my card to fail me, the blasted thing didn’t work. I’d been using this card for months without a single problem, what was going on?

I had no cash, my credit card was buried somewhere deep within my suitcase and the minutes were ticking away. I decided to make my way to the train and deal with it on board. I climbed the stairs onto the platform, glanced at the departures board to find the platform number and reached the train with just moments to spare. Of all the tens of thousands of trains in Europe at any given moment, this must have been the only God damn train I’d ever seen with a conductor blocking travellers from boarding without a valid ticket.

I desperately tried to explain my predicament to the unhelpful prick, but he just turned me away, refusing to acknowledge what I was saying. By the time I’d run back downstairs, unpacked my bag, found my credit card and purchased a ticket, the train was well on its way without me. The feeling of hopelessness sank in with the realisation that once again, I was going to miss another flight.

In all my years, I’d never missed a single departure, how could it be possible to miss two in as many months? What was going on? Determined not to waste any more time or money, I booked the next available flight, which was from Rotterdam at three pm. before promptly making my way cross-country, arriving at the airport at around one p.m. and waiting patiently for the call to depart.

Hours disintegrated into minutes as we edged nearer our departure time of three twenty p.m., but the flight-board still read, ‘Please Wait,’ and I began to wonder what the hold-up was. I couldn’t afford to miss the window of opportunity to move back into my old place. Anxiety rumbled in my gut, as twenty minutes later, the flight status changed to ‘Delayed.’

Spooked by the morning’s events I began questioning my decision, contemplating if I was supposed to be going back to Nice, and telling myself to think positively because everything happens for a reason. Just as I sent a text to Rose to let her know I’d be even later than I’d expected, the departure board changed to ‘Boarding.’

Finally, we were on our way. By this point, I was metaphorically shitting my pants, absolutely convinced the plane was going down somewhere over continental Europe. There was no turning back now, I’d already taken my seat and fastened my seatbelt. I couldn’t help but wonder what all this meant? Was it purely a coincidence that I was to arrive over eight hours later than I’d expected or was it a chain of events that just had to happen?

'Crying Woman Bridge (High Country Mystery Series)' by Loretta Jackson and Vickie Britton

Blurb:

Haunted bridge, crying woman, missing baby!

While returning from Professor Dawson’s lecture on haunted places, the last thing Sheriff Jeff McQuede and Dawson expect to encounter is a terrified woman clinging to the railing of Mirabella’s Bridge, crying for her lost baby. It looks as if Rae Harris has thrown the infant over the bridge in a fit of despair, but she claims he has been stolen by a ghostly figure she calls Mirabella. Similar to the La Llorona legend Dawson just spoke about, Mirabella was a local pioneer woman who was rumored to have drowned her infant after being abandoned by a lover. At first McQuede believes Rae was driven by madness, but he soon finds evidence that her story may be true, and the perfectly timed kidnapping of her child may be in some way related to lecture attendee and local celebrity, Jim Royce, and his vast fortune.

'Doomed Soul' by Robert Boomsliter #BookBlast

doom soul tour banner

Doomed Soul A man without faith shares his views as the end of life approaches. The views are reflections on religion, morality and death. The deeply religious will find little of interest here and may find some of the material incomprehensible. Some moderates who have noticed twinges of doubt or discomfort in certain beliefs may find some explanations for those feelings.

The faithless will probably understand it all. It is the author's hope that for them, it will be a pleasant read.

About the author:

Robert - Doomed SoulI am a retired electrical engineer, my career of 41 years spent mostly in Silicon Valley, California. I was one of those extremely fortunate individuals who enjoyed their work so much that it seemed unfair that I should be paid to perform it.

My profession required some technical writing but I never aspired to author anything that would be interesting to the general reader. Doomed Soul is my first attempt to do so and I hope that its introduction is a clear explanation why I chose to do it.

I currently live in Florida with my wife Babs and two bichon frise dogs named Boomer and Gabby.

#BookReview 'Diary of a Single Wedding Planner' by Violet Howe

diary of a single wedding planner tour banner

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00001]Wedding planner Tyler Warren left heartbreak behind when she ran away from her small Southern hometown and started a new life in a big city. Years later, she wants to believe in the fairy-tale endings her job promotes, but the clients she meets day after day seem to be more “Crazily Ever After” than “Happily Ever After.”

Meanwhile, her own attempts at romance play out as bizarre comedies rather than love stories, and she’s starting to think Prince Charming either fell off his horse or got eaten by a dragon. When unresolved issues from Tyler’s past complicate things even further, she discovers she may yet have some things to figure out before she can find her own happy ending.

This delightful first book in the Tales Behind the Veils series chronicles Tyler’s wacky misadventures, both personal and professional. Whether she’s getting insane requests from brides or outlandish requests on dates, you’re sure to be charmed and entertained by the Diary of a Single Wedding Planner.

**My thoughts**

Okay, how many of us have ever been Tyler? That unrequited first love that completely broke our hearts. That best friend who is probably perfect for us, but we just can't see the forest for the trees. Those feelings like you are never going to find your one true love. That inability to stand up for yourself all the time, because it is hard to say no and to see people hurting. That need to learn how to do your job well and how to "life" even better. I know it isn't just me. But I did see a lot of myself in Tyler. I am sure that many other women are going to agree. I just had to love her.

I also love Cabe. He is the perfect best friend, even if he was a fool and left her behind to get married. He reminds me a lot of people I have known, as does her ex-boyfriend Dwayne. I want to smack both of them, but I do also want to love on Cabe.

The dating game sucks. Tyler's experiences, especially her crazy dates, just further cement that. Sure, her experiences may be a bit on the extreme side, but I have heard tell of similar situations and may or may not have a few of my own. I am not going to elaborate, because I don't want readers to lose the funny factor when they read for themselves.

The other funny side is all of the weddings. I am sure that a lot of readers are going to think that these weddings are contrived and far-fetched. Growing up with people involved in a lot of weddings, I can promise you that any one of these wedding situations can and does happen.

I also found Tyler's mom funny, yet cringe-worthy all at once. I think even if your mother isn't like that all of the time, you will recognize a lot of the conversations.

The only thing that threw me off was her name. I am so used to associating "Tyler" with a guy that I would forget it was HER name. I would get confused for a moment and then remembered it was her.

So, yes, all in all, I found this book to be quite realistic. It kept me engrossed, as I kept putting off other adulting responsibilities to keep reading. I did actually LOL at some moments. I cringed and I cried. It is somewhat predictable, but I don't care. It doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, but there is such a hint of more to come, that I need to get my hands on the second book.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
