Caelum – Olde City Angels Book 1

Eva doesn’t claim to be a good guardian angel, but she tries. After she loses two charges, the Powers That Be begin to doubt her abilities. To redeem herself, Eva sets out to rescue Elsie, granddaughter of the former king of the Fae. A demon has kidnapped Elsie to complete an ancient ritual that will allow him to slip through the veil between Earth and Hell during the Sturgeon moon.

Thomas, an angel liaison, finally lands his first mission. But when he’s paired with the angel responsible for his uncle’s death, he has to put aside their differences to get the job done.

With unlikely friends in tow, Eva and Thomas are in a race against time. Save Elsie, save the world—oh, and save Eva’s job.

Read an excerpt:
A few feet away, George got to his feet and leaned against the wall. “I’m too old for this. Vampires, werewolves, and now ogres? I didn’t sign up for this, Eva. ” He ran his hand through his sandy blond hair, then pulled out a cigarette, lighting it and taking a drag. “I’m serious. I’m not sure how much more I can handle.”
I looked at the ogre sprawled out on the ground. “We saved Danielle, and we did what we had to do. Call in a clean up crew, and I’ll see you in a few weeks. We’ll see where we are then.”
He didn’t speak, simply nodded and walked toward his car. George would get a little vacation and rejuvenate. He’d been my liaison to this world from the time he was fifteen, just as his grandfather had been my liaison before him. He’d come around. It was in his genes.
I watched George leave and glanced down to the creature. Luckily, normal humans couldn’t see the ogres or other supernatural creatures unless the supernaturals wanted to be seen, but having dead ogres lying around was in poor taste. Even if they couldn’t see it, they would certainly smell him soon.

About the authors:

Turning Points in Compassion is an ambitious project that covers a range of topics from politics and law to spiritual and social change. West Australian author, publisher and teacher Gypsy Wulff and co-editor Fran Chambers have collected the personal journeys of animal advocates from around the world and woven them into a tapestry that provides insight, education and understanding.

“I write when I feel there is something to say. There is so much going on in the world, including much needless suffering. I envision a world of beauty, care, harmony, kindness, support and understanding. So many would dismiss this vision as idealistic and unachievable but I believe it’s a matter of choice for so many of us.

The currency of money has replaced the currency of giving and caring and until that changes, suffering continues. I didn’t start writing/editing until I started animal advocacy work. No day goes by when I don’t want to speak for and about the animals. It’s a continual source of motivation and inspiration to help them gain their freedom from oppression. The majority of people care and with the right information they are able to make choices that bring that care into action.”

Gypsy founded SpiritWings Humane Education in 2014. She has written a series of children’s books about kindness to animals and the care of the planet. Teaching both children and adults in a variety of capacities, her career in education has spanned four decades.

All proceeds from the sale of her books are donated to animal sanctuaries and rescue groups.

Fire In My Heart Series: The Heart of Now by C.L. Bush

After a deadly fire six years ago in which he lost his father, Lawrence Sheridan is finally going back to London. With a hateful half-brother and a venom spitting stepmother, he is determined to figure out if the fire was just an accident or something more.

Francis Hudley has been brought to London by her Aunt Livingston and she, at eighteen, is finally having her coming out. She is shy and anything but overjoyed at the prospect of finding a husband. While enjoying the season, she meets an old family friend of her aunt's and is captivated by his love of the same things that interest her most.

Neither are seeking nor interested in marriage, but when a connection happens their passion is kindled. Can Laurie find the person who is responsible for murdering his father and trying to kill him while following his heart with this young woman who has so captivated him? And if he chooses her, can he keep her safe until the mystery is solved?

Read an excerpt:

PROLOGUE

All was quiet as Lawrence Sheridan walked up from the library late one spring evening. At twenty-five he was young and fit and had just spent the night with a bottle of Madeira and a good book.
His father lamented him not enjoying his youth, but Laurie could tell he appreciated that he handled responsibility well as he was heir to Waltham, an estate of some 5,000 acres.
Laurie’s younger brother Theodelphius, at fifteen lacked all that Laurie had in terms of temperament and good sense Edmund Sheridan had said. It was only two weeks ago that Laurie reconciled with his father over his marriage to his stepmother. Edmund, at fifty-seven, had married the eighteen year old Cecilia and six months later she gave birth to Theo. If it wasn't for the Sheridan gray eyes, many would suspect that child wasn't his.
Laurie thought about this as he walked up the steps to his room, pleased with another pleasant evening with his father.
As he reached the second floor of the west wing he paused. Something smelled off. Smoke, yes because it was spring the fires would be lit. But it was stronger than normal.
Following his nose he rounded the corner and saw it.
The smoke was seeping out under the door of an unused guest room. He was surprised as the room wasn’t in use and thinking it could possibly be a clogged flue, Laurie opened the door. Flames licked at the entire room as the thick smoke enveloped him and stole his breath.
He quickly tried to close the door, but not quick enough as the renewed oxygen fueled the fire. The room had already been fully alight and now, the fully engulfed flames followed him into the hall, setting the carpet on fire. Before Laurie even had time to wonder why this room was on fire, he realized that the situation was out of control and the whole wing was at risk of going up.
Laurie quickly ran down the hall, yelling at the top of his lungs that there was a fire. Servants and his stepmother ran in to the hall as he yelled for a servant to notify the fire brigade while he directed the others to exit. He grabbed the butler and his valet, Billingsworth, to help with buckets of water and to prevent the spreading of the fire to the rest of the house.
As Laurie started pouring the water, he realized it was useless. He quickly told Billingsworth and the butler, Thompson, that they needed to exit and make sure that everyone was safe while they waited for the fire brigade.
Leaving the smoke and exiting to the group outside he saw his stepmother was in hysterics. After inquiring what the situation was, he found out that her lady's maid was still inside. His stepmother was ranting that the maid had been using the unused room for a tryst with one of the other servants.
He quickly asked Thompson if everyone was accounted for and got a response that they were still counting. Knowing it was the only way to calm his stepmother and that he couldn't allow an innocent woman to burn when he could rescue her, Laurie removed his coat, covered his mouth and ran back into the burning west wing.
He got as far as the stairs before the smoke reached him. As he tried to navigate through the thick smoke, he started climbing to the first floor. The smoke was lighter here, but still had the ability to make him cough.
He knew the maid usually was in his stepmother's room at night because she slept on a cot in the dressing room, but if she were having a tryst as his stepmother said, he had best check the main area where the fire had started to see if he could spot her.
As climbed to the second floor and he headed in that direction he was met with fire. It was all around him - climbing up the curtains, on the carpet, burning through the tables along the wall. The fire was spreading so fast there wouldn’t be much of a west wing left by the time the fire brigade got there.
Laurie realized the situation was hopeless. He turned to go back, but at once he saw that the fire had already spread behind him. The curtains had fallen, swinging to light ones further down the wall on fire, setting more of the carpet alight as well.
He could feel the flames starting to burn his hair. The side of his face was getting hot. Knowing there was no other choice, he ducked his head and ran through the wall of raining debris, still lit with flames that licked out at him. He could feel their white hot fingers melting his flesh.
As he reached the other side he tried to scream. There was no air left in his lungs. They felt burnt. He knew he needed to move, but fear and pain were freezing him in place. Just as he thought to give up, he found one final breath and groped to get up only to find Billingsworth there grabbing his arm.
He felt his valet pulling him down the stairs, making it down to the first floor, all the while the blinding pain making him want to scream. Coughs racked his body.
Once outside he collapsed into Billingsworth’s arms and the man laid him down on the ground while calling to the housekeeper to bring water and bandages. The aged woman rushed over as fast as a girl of twenty and poured water on Laurie’s fresh wounds.
He felt himself fading into darkness, but he had just enough strength to grab Billingsworth’s hand and ask, “My father?”
Billingsworth gave him a long look and said, “Sir, we will take it as it comes.”
The last thing that Laurie remembered was the burning pain of his skin as they peeled his clothes off of him and the burning in his heart knowing that his father was gone. He let the blackness consume him.

Read an exclusive excerpt from 'The Last Earl' by Lara Blunte

Blurb:

Willful, vain and intelligent, Lady Catherine Lytton believes she is in full control of her destiny when she inherits a large fortune from her uncle.

The return of a distant kinsman, Adrian Stowe, the Earl of Halford, is a welcome relief from the monotony of the English countryside.

Adrian is handsome, enigmatic and, some say, mad. But then, what man would escape the grisly murder of mother, father and brother unscathed? He is also the last of his line, and yet seems to have no interest in his title or his wealth -- and no inclination to find a wife.

In fact, he doesn't seem to do anything that is expected of him; yet, in her pride, Catherine hardly thinks that the Earl will inspire an uncontrollable passion in her. Above all, she cannot imagine that it will be unrequited.

As she follows him to Constantinople, trying to unveil the mystery that surrounds him, she will learn the meaning of love, even as she seems about to lose everything that is precious.

Read an excerpt:
The music was about to begin, and the candles were snuffed everywhere except around the piano. Adrian stretched his arm along the back of the settee and turned to face forward.
As the first poignant notes were played, however, all Catherine could think about was how near his hand was to her; if he only moved it slightly he would touch her. While he seemed absorbed in the music, she was oblivious to it. She leaned back further against the settee. It was only after what seemed like an eternity that she felt his hand brush hers.
She allowed herself to close her eyes for a moment as he touched her shoulder. She felt his fingers play with her earring and then close for a moment around the back of her neck, where he had kissed her so many times. She shivered, and then his hand was gone.

About the author:

I have always liked history, which was my minor at Georgetown University, and I decided to write books set at different times, providing information of what I know about each period.

As I travel a lot for my job, I always enjoy adding the sights and sounds of places where I have lived or been, even if the places that draw me might be considered "exotic": Istanbul, Kampala, Phnom Penh, Cuernavaca.

Apart from writing, I am a voracious reader, and I love film and television as well.

In my novels, I like to create multi-dimensional characters with flaws that lead them to difficult situations, from which they will emerge changed. The course of true love never did run smooth, so I believe that a certain darkness in tales of passion is always a good addition. I also like to add a dose of humor.

The romances I have loved are by authors such as Jane Austen, the Bröntes, Leo Tolstoy Thomas Hardy and George Eliot, among others -- though I don't presume to write as well as they did.

I try to stay true to different eras, while not alienating the reader by being too inflexible with the language and situations.

'The Last Earl' by Lara Blunte

As she follows him to Constantinople, trying to unveil the mystery that surrounds him, she will learn the meaning of love, even as she seems about to lose everything that is precious.

Read an excerpt:

No one spoke of anything but her that evening, though in their English way they did it sotto voce, behind fans and gloved hands. The women joined in a universal attack against her among themselves.
The men, patently, did not agree, and instead crowded around Catherine, staring at her in fascination. "They must be trying to get a closer look at my tiara," she told her mother cynically. One of her favorite theories those days was that she was pursued not for love, or even for her beauty, but for her money.
She ruled over the evening, and only a sharp observer would have noticed that she gripped her fan too tightly, and that her eyes were too bright.
When Adrian arrived and came to greet her she was curt with him, going immediately back to her conversation with Hugh Kirkpatrick. Adrian moved away, but kept observing her with a frown. The knowledge that his eyes were on her made her act even more extravagantly: she danced several waltzes, and drank a great deal of champagne.
He must not suppose that she was weak or thinking of him.
Yet, exhaustion suddenly overtook her, and she moved away from the crowd to stand near a window, her head swimming. Adrian approached her and said forcefully, "You aren't well. I am taking you and Aunt Helen home."
"Don't be absurd," she laughed. "There is nothing wrong with me that a great deal of dancing won't cure. Here is Mr. Dalton. I promised him this waltz."
As she waltzed she felt dizzy, and did not demur when Jack led her to the summerhouse outside. Jack sat her down and fanned her, and meant to be extremely respectful until she raised her hand to her head. He stared at her arm and was not able to help himself, but grabbing it firmly, planted a desperate kiss on it. She was going to protest but he suddenly stopped. Catherine lifted her eyes, and found herself looking at Adrian.
Jack began stammering, "I-I-I was-"
"I could see what you were doing," Adrian said icily.
Jack stood up, shifted on his feet and began to sweat profusely, for he saw he might not escape a good thrashing. But Adrian made no move towards him, and instead looked at Catherine, who had turned her head away. Jack inched forward, walked around Adrian as if he were a chained beast, and disappeared into the house. Adrian still looked at Catherine for a moment, then said, "What's the matter with you? Jack Dalton! I'd be less surprised to see you kissing a cockroach!"
He raised her from the seat and looked into her face. Her eyes stared back into his and she let her body fall forward as her head fell back and reached for his neck with one hand to steady herself. His hand came round her small waist. He shook his head at her, "You don't know what you are doing, Catherine. You don't understand what you are feeling."
"I do know!" she cried.
"No, you don't understand that there is a moment when neither you nor I can turn back anymore."
"I don't want to turn back!"
Her eyes shone with tears. She saw that for a second he still struggled with himself, but then he suddenly brought her body to his in an embrace and kissed her. She had never been kissed, and had only expected to feel the pressure of his lips, a pleasant, dreamlike sensation and nothing more.
Instead, almost as soon as their lips touched he parted hers with his. As his tongue found hers she felt as if her blood had been sent rushing through her all veins and arteries; it was almost like physical pain.
He held her fast as he kissed her, his hand behind her head. She couldn't open her eyes and knew that she was moaning, as her heart beat in her throat.
Then, just as suddenly, he let her go and said, "Go inside now."
She swayed a little where she stood, staring at him wide-eyed, realizing that she had begun to shake. If he had meant to teach her a lesson, he had. She hadn't known that she could feel like that. Her skin was humming from head to foot.
Catherine didn't want to go in, she wanted more of him, more of that feeling. But he was standing in the dark, his eyes gleaming, as he threatened, "Go in or I will drag you in."
She realized that he would, and she had just enough sense left to turn and walk towards the house. It was the hardest thing she had ever had to do, to leave him behind and enter the ballroom where people seemed to be giving her quizzical looks.
A mirror told her that her hair was tidy and that there was no trace of his kiss, though she could still feel his lips and his tongue; there was no trace of the madness she felt from wanting him in her face.
She put on a blind smile and went to find her mother.
