Not a Chance

The last thing Hope Hallows wants is to become the latest headline. Living in a town that likes secrets, she prefers to keep hers hidden. Avoiding a nosy reporter’s questions about her ability to infuse euphoria or despair with a single touch, and those who crave this bliss, is nothing new. But having her brother’s annoying girlfriend, Berta, go missing is—especially when it makes Hope suspect number one.

As a triplet, her resemblance to her beloved dead sister causes her family to grieve even more, and her escalating supernatural skills makes Griffith, her half-human-half-Oppressor boyfriend, wary. He wants to put his unsavory past behind him—this could include Hope—since her abilities remind him of the Underworld.

In her desperate search to find Berta, she stumbles across a tunnel. Phantom voices within whisper that evil has been waiting for a new leader—and isn't she lucky, they've chosen Hope.

Read an excerpt:
“I swear you have a death wish. Are you looking for any excuse to use your abilities again?”

I started at the ferocity in his remark and straightened in defense. He was supposed to be my ally, but I should’ve anticipated his reaction. “I had no choice.”

“Only because you chose to take her in the woods in the first place.” The tiny haze of lights ignited around him as his frustration built.

I pushed my hands in my pockets to prevent from reaching for him for my own selfish comfort. He had to understand. Griffith was the only one who understood me. He was my rock in this ever-changing town. “I had to help look for Berta. There isn’t a choice in everything. I couldn’t let Chance go alone. Yes, I went because it was my idea in the first place, but also because he’s my brother. It’s not safe for him.”

His gaze locked with mine. “You didn’t worry about yourself? Or consider how much worry you’ve caused me? Damn it Hope, you, of all people, should realize what lurks undercover in the daylight has little fear at night and outside of town.”

Griffith always saw right through my petty motives. The trait was what I loved and hated about him.

Happy 10th Anniversary, Goddess Fish Promotions! Meet Marianne and Judy!

I've been reviewing books on my blog for about nine years now. When I stumbled upon the concept of book blog tour companies, Goddess Fish was one of the first few that I found for whom I started doing posts. I've enjoyed with them for all of these years and am happy to introduce you to the women behind the scenes, in honor of their 10th anniversary. So meet Marianne and Judy. And as usual, follow their tour around their various bloggers, leave comments and questions, and enter the giveaways for both authors and readers along the way!

************************

Where did you grow up? Tell us a little about yourself.

Judy: I moved to my hometown when I was 5 and lived in the same house until I graduated high school. I spent several years away from home, but moved back 16 years ago and still love it. It's growing, but there's still a bit of a small town feel to it.
Marianne: Where didn’t I grow up? We moved more than a dozen times (and we weren’t military—mom just had itchy feet). Okay, so we stayed in Northern California, but even so I laugh when I get questions like “What was your bedroom like as a child?” because … which one?
What’s the best joke (keep it clean) that you’ve ever heard?
Judy: The best one is too long, but do you know why the blonde was fired from the M&M factory? She kept throwing away all the W's. (Hey, I'm a blonde.. I can tell blonde jokes).
Marianne: Descartes walked into a bar and the bartender asked him, "Would you like a drink?" Descartes responded, "I think not," and *poof!* he vanished.
What’s the worst job you’ve had?
Judy: I've been very fortunate in my choice of jobs – I can't think of any that I didn't enjoy. Life is too short to stay in a job where you are unhappy.
Marianne: Honestly, I’ve really loved all my jobs. My favorite one had to be bartending (closely followed by waitressing) which is odd considering I’m actually really an introvert, lol.
What are some of your favorite bands/singers?
Judy: I'll date myself with these answers. Love The Monkees, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Carpenters, BeeGees. More current, I absolutely adore Home Free.
Marianne: Depends on the day and my mood. My Spotify lists have everything from Panic and the Disco to Rascal Flatts to Disturbed, but I also have the Andrews Sisters, Jim Croce, Olivia Newton-John and Rita Coolidge. I’m a big fan of show tunes, too … so there are plenty of those on there as well.

Goddess Fish Promotions Tenth Anniversary

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to the Goddess Fish Promotions Tenth Anniversary Month Long Celebration!
Who is Goddess Fish Promotions? And what do we do? We're glad you asked!
We didn't want your visit here to be dry and boring, so we decided to have a poetry competition and put what we do into verse. Here are the initial entries:
Marianne:
Roses are Red.
Violets are Blue.
I'm awful at poetry.
Coffee.
Judy:
We can edit your book
find things you didn't see
It will be fun to look
at the changes from me.
Yeah, for some reason, Judy won!
Even better, her poem is correct. We DO offer editing as one of our options. Here are a couple of testimonials from clients:
I worked with Marianne on a complete edit and was very happy with the results. Her feedback was clear, easy to follow, and she probed on things I hadn’t thought of. She was also responsive whenever I had questions and helped me work through a few issues. Her feedback and guidance improved the quality of my manuscript, all at a very fair price. I’m working on my next book and plan to use their services again.-J B Glazer, author, In Search of Mr. Anonymous
Choosing the right editor for a project is incredibly important to an author. Let’s face it, we want the best for our books. When I was considering editors for my first indie-published book, Regenerate, I naturally thought of Goddess Fish Promotions–and I’m so glad I did.
Marianne Arkins and Judy Thomas are incredibly attentive and professional during the entire editing process. Their input was invaluable and the story is much stronger because they cared enough to help unsnarl plot points and find order in the chaos.
I can’t wait to work with them again. Truly, a top-notch editorial team!
– Sarita Leone, award-winning author of Regenerate
We also offer Virtual Book Tours, Graphic Design, Social Media Promotion and more. You can see more testimonials here.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know us a little (more information is below) and we'd like to do the same. We'd LOVE to see a little poem that tells us a bit about you in the comments. We'll be awarding random book giveaways and $5 Amazon GCs to some of the best poetry we find. It might not be at every stop, but when something really makes us smile, we'll reward it! Come on, be daring...
And now, more about us:
About Goddess Fish Promotions
Goddess Fish Promotions was established October 14, 2008. Why? Well, when Marianne became a published author and got her the first taste of trying to promote a book on a budget, there was only one other virtual book tour company in place at the time, and their fees were simply too high for a small press author. After coordinating and running her own tour, she knew other authors could use the same service for a reasonable price. Thus, Goddess Fish Promotions was born.
Because both Judy and Marianne were authors and editors prior to running Goddess Fish Promotions, they approach the business with a unique point of view, and treat their clients how they would expect to be treated.
The People Behind the Fish:
Judy Thomas
Judy has a college degree in English and she’s worked in retail, education, at her local library as well as an editor for a small press and for the now defunct ShadowKeep Ezine. She’s also a published author so can see things from both sides of the fence. In 2013, she “retired” and now spends her days helping authors make their dream come true—as well as working as much as she can with her local theater group.
Marianne Arkins
Grammar freak and coffee lover, Marianne wrote her first novel at ten years old, built her first commercial website in 2000, and published for the first time in 2006. She worked as a professional editor for just over a year, and knows what it’s like to write, edit and promote a book on a budget.
Review of Waltz With Me, Cowboy by Debra Holt With Giveaway
Waltz With Me, Cowboy
Calla Rose returned home to McKenna Springs to help save her family's business... The Yellow Rose... a ninety-year old Texas dance hall. She also came home to heal. Being a victim and finding her trust level in men damaged, she is determined to succeed in this one thing for her family and nothing is going to deter her from doing just that. Now even a green-eyed cowboy/mayor with heart-stopping smiles and kisses that threaten to thaw the ice around her heart.
Ty Conners wasn't looking for love. He had simply stopped in to welcome the latest business owner to town. But coming face to face with Calla Rose would prove an unforgettable experience in more ways than one and send his heart into a tailspin. Never a man to not face a challenge head-on, he prepared to get past the barricades she had erected between herself and the male population. But it was easier said than done, and just when he's within reach of her heart, a lie brings memories of pain and distrust and Calla's heart may be out of his reach for good.
Read an excerpt:
“You’re right. It’s the best offer. And I’ll take you up on it.” She placed her hand in his in order to get a hand up from the step. Mistake. His hand was warm, and the warmth seemed to flow up her arm and fill her with a sense of peace that was most disconcerting. Once on her feet, she gave a slight tug and he released his grip. Was she sorry? Silly thought. Her mind was just tired from the long and trying day. The fresh air would do the trick to put things in their proper perspective... including the man beside her.
A few minutes later, Calla felt the tenseness leave the neck muscles and the corners of her mouth curved upward of their own accord. The windows were down, and the pickup was making its way along the country lane as it followed the curves of the river, crisscrossing bridges from one side to the other as it went deeper into the tall canyon. The breeze ruffled through her hair. Here she was, taking a ride in a pickup, listening to a lively George Strait swing tune on the radio, and a good-looking cowboy beside her. If those people from her old life could see her now… would they think she had lost her mind? Did she think she had?
Or would they think she had finally found it? That sudden realization brought a strange feeling with it. If she didn’t know better, she’d think she had finally found where she belonged. But that couldn’t be… could it? The city life and a stately courtroom had been her mecca. How did things switch course in mid-stream on her? Calla’s gaze went to the man beside her and just then, he turned and gave her a look and smile that answered her unspoken question. Silly! She jerked her gaze back to the open window. How could he know what she was thinking? When she wasn’t sure of it herself?
**My thoughts**
I feel like I have already been introduced to these characters somewhere along the line. At the very least, I felt like they were old friends. Calla has a lot of baggage in her past from which she is trying to escape. So in a way it was perfect time for her to have to come home to take over the family business, even though losing your beloved father is never a good thing. I admire her strength and devotion to her family. And her sisters have their own fun personalities that blend so well.
Ty is that hottie ranch type with the slow drawl and sexy demeanor, but without being the cocky type. He takes his responsibilities seriously and is a man who knows how to get things done. He also loves to love hard and will show it to you more than he tells you. I only have a little country in me, but can totally see myself falling for someone like that myself.
One of the greatest scenes in this book is when the two of them meet for the first time. I don't like to give away spoilers, but I have often wanted to do that on purpose. It works much better as an accident. And I have never wanted to take a ride down the river in a rowboat so much, just sayin'.
Calla and Ty are fun because they spar and play off each other so well. The chemistry between them is intense. They bring out the best in each other. And their lives in McKenna Springs just seem so relaxing in spite of all the hard work, yet almost magical and exciting. It's a place I want to visit and these are people I want to meet. I am guessing that Calla's sisters Jaz and Lily will soon have their own stories, and I can't wait to read them.
The Cast of Kismet & Karma
Meet the cast of Kismet & Karma – personalities revealed through their astrological signs!
Paige – Taurus (April 24th) Paige proved her reliability, patience and devotion during her relationship with Jason. Like a true Taurus, she hates the sudden changes and complications in her love life. Pair that with her stubborn streak, and it’s no wonder she needs help to recognize what’s right in front of her; a gift in the form of her greatest passion—novel worthy romance.
Bryce – Virgo (September 15th) As a Virgo he’s loyal, kind and hardworking. He’s always thought his practicality and desire to stay out of the spotlight were good things. But now he wonders if they’ve only kept Paige from noticing him. Bryce has started to realize that if he wants to get the girl, he must cast aside his careful nature. Good thing he has a magic Genie to help him do just that.
Amy – Aquarius (February 11th) She’s original, independent, a good listener and cares deeply about others. This makes her a great best friend and the only voice of reason Paige will listen to. But Amy’s also inherited some of the less attractive Aquarius attributes; namely her tendency to be temperamental and emotionally withdrawn. Lucky for Amy, there’s a special guy who’s crazy about her, flaws and all.
Eric – Scorpio (November 12th) Eric is a true friend. It’s one of the many positive traits held by Scorpios. He’s passionate, dedicated, resourceful and determined to help his baby sister. Of course, that might be easier if he wasn’t so distrusting and secretive. Let’s not forget the fact that he’s a tinsy bit jealous by nature. But hey, some women find that sort of thing attractive. And if that’s not enough, he’s got those dazzling dimples for backup.
Kennedy – Leo (July 31st) Ken’s a Leo, through and through. She loves theater, hanging with her friends, expensive clothes and being admired. But as the baby of the group, she often feels ignored or left out. It’s her absolute biggest pet peeve. Ken’s admittedly a little self-centered though she’s got a big, warm, generous heart. Fate will soon put her creativity and passion to good use, and she’s all for it.
Cody – Sagittarius (Despite his September 15th birthdate.) Clearly, Cody was born under the wrong sign. Extremely extroverted, he’s the total opposite of his very Virgo twin—definitely an honorary Sagittarius. Cody’s constant antics and humor are charming, which makes the group willing to overlook his impatient and sometimes tactless ways. Optimistic and enthusiastic, he’ll do anything to achieve his goal: getting Bryce to pull his head out of his butt and man up.
Genie – Aries (April 1st) As an April Fools baby, it’s fitting that Genie be the most essential part of such an outrageous plan. But like all Aries, she’s confident and optimistic that she can get the job done. Frustrated by people who don’t use their talents, she jumps at the chance to showcase her own. Sure, Bryce often brings out her aggressive, moody and impatient side, but she likes a good challenge. Plus, who’d have thought she’d gain so many good (and hot) friends?
This cast is super fun and you’re sure to get some good laughs. Fate and Fortune (Book One) shares the crazy week the as told by Paige and Bryce. But if you want the REAL story, check out Kismet and Karma (Book Two) to see how everything actually went down.
Other Books in the Series
Fate & Fortune
(Fate & Fortune #1)
By Robin Daniels
YA Contemporary Romance, Duology
September 20th 2018
Bryce has liked Paige since they were little but has never had the guts to act on his feelings. Paige is devastated over being dumped by her long-time boyfriend and can’t seem to move on. They’re stuck in a rut, until fate decides to pull them out.
Both Paige and Bryce are talked into seeing a fortune teller at the annual Summer’s End Carnival. Neither of them buys into the mysticism, until the psychic’s predictions start coming true. Now, the most bizarre things are happening and there isn’t a clear explanation. Each of them must figure out if they’re the subject of an elaborate hoax or a bigger plan forged by destiny.
Three Months to Change
By Dinah Roseberry
Paranormal Romance
Paperback & ebook, 208 Pages
September 26th 2018 by Visionary Living, Inc.
Lenora was changing...not in any frightening way. At least, not at first. There was the intense ability to shield herself from abuse that was very empowering. But her other senses had become heightened as well, and that’s when she’d begun seeing scenes from the past, and smoky mists inside her home.
Meeting Frankie in the midst of all this had been a wonderful treat—there weren’t many men who could stir her emotions as he was prone to do. Still, there was something strange about him, something she couldn’t put her finger on. Ah, well, desirable men with the air of mystery were compelling and fun. Weren’t they?
And what about Rex? She wasn’t sure. He was part of a fearsome family, making her wonder if such tales of werewolves and monsters were true. Just how did she fit in? And why would she even want to?
All she kept hearing, however, was that there were only a precious three months before a full change. Time was awastin’.
Read an excerpt:
The sounds went on for a time, and then there was silence. She stayed put for the better part of an hour, though it seemed longer. “I can’t stay here,” she whispered out loud. “Whatever is going on down there, I need to find Rex and get out.” She knew this was not a good idea. Rex would not have warned her to stay behind the door if there were no dangers to consider. He’d told her to go to the attic! And everyone was afraid of the attic. How bad could things be to have him send her there? Still, he wasn’t coming for her. Didn’t that mean he was in trouble? Of course, she didn’t need any wolf trouble. She knew what they looked like, thanks to Charlotte.
“Taking a peek can’t hurt,” she said just above a whisper. “Frankie, where the hell are you?” But he was nowhere to be seen. That couldn’t be a good sign either. He’d been with her throughout this ordeal. What could have spooked him—or all the others for that matter?
NY Doc Under the Northern Lights by Amy Ruttan Book Tour Grand Finale
On Tour with Prism Book Tours
Welcome back! I had a lot of fun with this tour, being able to host it at three of my sites. I did a character interview, an author interview, and I reviewed the book. There's a lot more about this title for you to enjoy, and it's all collected here for you.
Book Tour Grand Finale for
NY Doc Under the Northern Lights
By Amy Ruttan
We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you can see snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:
Launch - Note from the Author
I knew for my twentieth novel I had to write something fun and special. And what is more fun than a fish out of water story? One of my favourite romantic comedies is The Proposal, which is a definite fish out of water. City girl in Alaska. And I also am obsessed with the north and that’s how NY Doc Under the Northern Lights came about...
Dr. Sturlusson didn’t seem the type to leave her high and dry, but perhaps something unavoidable had happened and he hadn’t been able to contact her.
She should’ve told him not to bother picking her up and she should’ve gone with the car-rental plan in the first place.
Betty glanced up at the signs overhead, trying to figure out where to go to rent a car when she saw something move out of the corner of her eye.
She looked over her shoulder and her mouth hung open a little as an over-six-foot Viking of a man came marching toward her. Quickly.
"...a fun twist on an old storyline that has all kinds of unique elements to keep the pages turning. I needed something easy and uplifting the weekend that I read it. And how can you beat spending time together under the famed Northern Lights?"
“Dr. Jacinth?” he asked, almost in disbelief, his voice deep and rumbling.
“Yes. And who might you be?”
“Dr. Sturlusson,” he snapped back in annoyance. “I thought that would be obvious.”
“No, it’s not obvious. I’ve seen Dr. Sturlusson and he’s at least seventy. Are you telling me you’re seventy?”
He rolled his eyes. “You mean my father. I am Dr. Axel Sturlusson, his son.”
Northern Lights—FUN FACTS!!
So, I’m obsessed with the Northern Lights. The first time I saw them I was about 13 years old and even though I knew that the northern lights existed, I still didn’t know what I was looking at when I saw them...
“Fine,” she said. “Lead the way.”
He looked down at her shoes. “You do know this is Iceland in winter?”
“I’m aware.”
“You’re wearing ridiculous heels.”
She glanced down at her boots. “They’re boots.”
“It’s icy outside,” he stated gruffly.
“Oh, I’m surprised to hear that a place called Iceland is icy,” she snapped back. She was too tired to be bandying words about with a gigantic behemoth of a Viking in the middle of the airport.
An Interview with Dr. Axel Sturlusson
I’ve decided to poke and prod the hero of NY Doc Under the Northern Lights with an interview of sorts and he’s agreed, as long as I make it quick and he can get back to work.
*Axel walks in, arms crossed over his deep blue sweater, looking slightly annoyed*...
"The beauty of the novel is how it is a lesson in self-care, in the time we all need to heal and in the joyfulness of the unexpected. Ruttan pulls you into the lives of two surgeons who are each on the footsteps of re-finding themselves after their lives fractured. . . . As you move forward with them, your treated to a beautiful back-story of a family in crisis, a teenager who has a sharp wit and wisdom ahead of her years and the allure of Iceland itself. You won't want to exit this story until you find out what romanced a New York City doctor to become enchanted underneath the Northern Lights!"
E-Romance News - Guest Post
An Interview with Dr. Betty Jacinth.
Betty comes into the room. She’s bubbly and happy. She’s also visibly pregnant.
Thanks for letting me interview you today! I have to say Axel wasn’t amiable as you are...
Harlie's Books - Review
"The romance in the book is a slow burn and very subtle. Both Axel and Betty have battle scars that needed to heal before they could truly be together. . . . You just have to read the book to find out what I’m talking about."
Axel held out his arm, gesturing in the direction to the terminal doors, and she followed him, pulling her suitcase behind her. She was very aware of the sound of her heels against the airport floor, but she wasn’t going to back down to Axel Sturlusson. She hadn’t got where she was as a surgeon by backing down. She’d learned how to stand her ground.
Except when it came to Thomas. She’d let Thomas walk all over her and she hated herself for that.
Colorimetry - Excerpt
And her heart skipped a beat. It was as if those eyes had pierced her very soul. It was unsettling how much the intensity of his gaze affected her.
“I told you those were ridiculous boots. I knew that you were going to slip,” he grumbled as he set her upright.
“I didn’t see the ice,” she said, but she still clung to him.
“Well, you’re going to kill yourself walking around in those.”
What was the inspiration behind this book?
I really wanted to set a book in a different location and I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland. It also gave me an excuse to add my favourite thing to the story, which is the northern lights. I love the northern lights and have been privileged to see them countless times, including one special one where they were right above me and I was standing under them. I also love writing and reading fish out of water stories. It was fun to plop Betty down in the middle of Reykjavik and have to deal with my brooding, alpha hero.
Jorie Loves A Story - Author Interview
1) What initially attracted you to write Medical Romances and what did you hope to focus on as you worked on new stories for the Harlequin imprint as it looks like you've had a lovely career writing for them?
I always wanted to write for Harlequin. I loved category romances and when I was actively pursuing writing for them I noticed that Harlequin Medicals was holding a Fast Track. A way to get your partial in front of an editor instead of waiting in the slush pile. I thought, why not? I love Grey’s Anatomy. I am a super fan of that show. So I thought, I can try my hand at it. I mean, you don’t know unless you try right? I wasn’t expecting much. I set my story in Nunavut (which is a territory in Canada up in the arctic) and I had a request for a revised partial. That turned into a request for a full. I had a few rounds of revisions and then I finally got an email asking for my phone number and when was it a good time to call? The rest was history. I love writing about surgeons. I love their intensity and drive.
Wishful Endings - Excerpt
“Treat you like what? I got you to the vehicle safely. This way you won’t be laid up with a broken ankle during your first month of work in Reykjavik. My father would not be happy if I let harm come to you.” He motioned for her to slide her legs into the foot well so he could shut the door.
Fuming, Betty begrudgingly did as he asked, her eyes tracking him as he climbed into the driver’s side and buckled in. He glanced at her.
Becky on Books - Review
"A sweet romance–this was actually my first medical romance, and it served as a nice intro to the genre! . . . an entertaining read."
The Christmas Book Flood
The Icelandic Christmas tradition of Jolabokaflod is known as the Christmas Book Flood. This is one of the reasons I want to go to Iceland, because they love books as much as I do. I think the idea of exchanging books and spending the rest of the night curled up with that book and a cup of chocolate appeals to the introvert in me.
"NY Doc Under The Northern Lights by Amy Ruttan is fabulous. I loved this sweet romance. Love at first sight between two people..."
She clambered out of bed, jammed her glasses on her face, threw a sweater over her tank top, pulled on her heavy woolen socks and made her way downstairs, bumping into a wall as her eyes adjusted to the daylight.
She cursed under her breath and then peeked through the peephole and groaned when she saw a familiar six-foot Viking standing on her porch, looking just as good and put together as he had yesterday.
What does he want?
"A truly amazing tale, the plot is thick with intrigue and passion and the characters are deeply developed. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a sweet, romantic story to warm your hearts this coming winter season!"
Review of the Breakdown Series with Giveaway
Welcome to the blurb blitz tour for the Breakdown series! This is a unique one because it is a four-part suspense series where all four books tell one story, but are all written by different authors. I have seen this done with romances, but not with suspense yet! I had the honor of reviewing all four of the books in this page-turning series. Please enjoy them and leave questions and comments for all four of the authors. You can also follow the tour for more reviews and excerpts, plus more chances to enter the giveaway at the end.
Please note that affiliate links are present within this post. Should you make a purchase through one, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. I also received complimentary copies of these books in exchange for my honest review, which did not sway my opinion in one direction or another.
Breakdown Series
BREAKDOWN is a unique and groundbreaking four-book suspense series that will keep you turning pages until the killer is finally exposed.
In this explosive new miniseries, the idyllic community of Shutter Lake, nestled in the peaceful Sierra Nevada Mountains, is rocked by a shocking murder. Four women, friends who moved to the area to find healing and solace, must now dig deep and overcome the scars of past troubles to find a ruthless killer.
**My thoughts**
My overview of the entire series is one of fascination, as I cannot fathom how four different authors can put together one story in four different parts like this. I know authors have enjoyed doing collaborations such as these, but to now I have mostly seen only romance series where each author takes on a different character and his/her relationship. They build a bit on the previous stories. But to do a murder suspense series requires an entirely different kind of outlining and mapping to be successful.
Each book is told from a different point-of-view of one of four female friends, though you get a few peeks into the worlds of others as well. Each of these people have moved to Shutter Lake, hoping to find some peace from a traumatic past. And then the unthinkable happens, setting them and the entire town on edge. Secrets are around every corner. You would think that in a small town, everyone would know everyone else's business and secrets would be difficult to maintain, but not the case here. The more they know, the less they know. It's intriguing to read through and uncover the secrets along with the characters.
And even if you think you know what all of the secrets are or who did what, you don't really know. The innocent victim isn't as innocent as one would like to think. Twists and turns are obstacles down many of the paths and will keep you bumping the pages forward as quickly as you can through all four of these books. I think it would make for a great miniseries.
Read on for my reviews of each individual book.
The Dead Girl
THE BREAKDOWN BEGINS... Former L.A. homicide detective Laney Holt walked away from big city crime after a shooting she couldn't put behind her. With L.A. in her rear view mirror, she accepted the position of deputy chief of police in a small picturesque paradise called Shutter Lake. Nestled in a peaceful valley surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Shutter Lake is the perfect small town filled with pleasant, charming folks. The crime rate in Shutter Lake is zero...at least until the dead girl is found. The shocking murder shakes the town to its very foundation.
**My thoughts**
The series kicks off with a blast in this first installment, told from the point-of-view of Laney Holt, the detective. She is has a much more colorful past than most of the other people in the small town, having worked as a big city detective. That makes her perfect for this huge murder in a small town. No one seems to know anything, but a lot of people are hiding secrets. It's amazing how many secrets such a small place can conceal, but they are absolutely everywhere. And most of them are still uncovered even after this first novel.
I know that there are four books in this series, and that it is going to take reading all four of them to figure out who the real killer is. And right now, I really have no idea who it is. Sometimes I get an early inkling, but I think so far I am way out in left field. There is too much more story to tell, and like I said, too many secrets still buried.
We get an introduction to a lot of the other core characters in this book as well. You have Chief McCabe, who has a serious drinking problem, and some kind of story that he hasn't yet been willing to share. Vinn Bradshaw and his parents have some kind of a tricky past with Sylvia that people in town have had suspicions about, but in theory no one knows the truth. There's the creepy old man, Troy Duval, who lives by himself who has rumors abounding about his potentially shady past. You have all of the other girls who worked for Sylvia, one of whom has been missing for a while, and all of whom are extremely attractive. What does that mean? And so on, and so on.
To fully explain their relationships to Sylvia, the dead girl, would give away some of the secrets that get uncovered along the way, and I don't want to do any spoilers. You'll start to make some mental checklists of your own as you mentally map out the people of the town, though they are not overwhelming. And it definitely seems like the murder is just a small part of a much larger issue. The intrigue kept me glued to the Kindle screen all the way through.
This book does end on a cliffhanger of sorts. But you know that going into it, because you know that this is a four-part series. So you can't count it against them for doing so in this unique series. Finishing this one left me begging for the second book to be started immediately.
**My thoughts**
I admire Dana, because she will do anything for her students, and I was the same way when I was still directly involved in education. It helps that she is friends with Laney, who is currently heading up the investigation into Sylvia's murder. She keeps on digging for more information, because she wants the real killer brought to justice as soon as possible. In the meantime, she is still healing from her own traumatic nightmare of a past, one that would keep me up all night every night if it were also mine.
More secrets get revealed, and the tangled web that has been woven over the years gets even more intricate that anyone ever realized. Every time you solve one mystery, about five more crop up in its place. And the story has international consequences.
This one read even faster than the first book. Part of it was because the plot picked up pace as more of the secrets were being revealed. But also the writing style had a lot of well-done dialogue that made it read like I was watching a movie or a TV show, and that helped me zip through it. Again, finishing this one had me flipping immediately to the third book, to find out where the story was going to go next.
**My thoughts**
Julia is the focus of this book. She has her own past with trauma and secrets, having been an investigative journalist. She is very good at her job, and can potentially expose even more than anyone else has been able to figure out to this point. And there is so much to investigate, as so many secrets have been revealed. And now someone else is missing, bringing some of Julia's past back to her, and revealing that the two cases are connected. As more of Julia's past is revealed to me, it makes me want to have her backstory written in another book, because I think it would make a fascinating read, more so than any of the other characters thus far whose secrets have been revealed.
We're also starting to see different sides of some of the characters we have known thus far, and it's making the wheels in my head turn even more. More is revealed about Heidi, the owner of Batter Up, as well as Chief McCabe and one of the prominent local families. Things are getting tense in this small town, and the facades are rapidly dropping.
This installment of the series reads even faster than the first two, and leaves off at another sort of cliffhanger that is going to make you want the fourth book on hand immediately to wrap up the mystery.
**My thoughts**
Dr. Ana is the main perspective of this final installment of the series. Just like everyone else, she has her owns secrets that have yet to be revealed, and hers seem to be the most sinister of all. Another body is found and the world seems to be crashing down on this small town. It almost makes my head spin. So many more plots and twists round out this series. This was yet another quick read. I honestly read the entire series in just two days.
