Read an excerpt:
The screams continued to play out on the phone. Jamie was not holding it during the attack, but it laid on the floor next to him with the video running.

“He wanted us to see it,” said Bolder.

“Who, what do you mean?”

“The demon…he purposely put the phone on an angle so it could capture his possession of Jamie.”

“He wanted us to watch the whole dastardly act?”

“More than that…he wanted to make us sick. Frighten us into submission—give up and walk away.”

Fixated on the five-minute video; images of Jamie handled by the demon played out in the act of evil. The devil tied his feet and hands, and they slowly lifted him from the ceiling upside down—hanging like a bat. Jamie screamed in pain as the demon ripped off the skin from his torso to prepare the marking of the pentagram. Blood oozed from the deep red exposed flesh as agonizing cries of help went unanswered.

It was an evil creature with huffs and a tail…hairy lower body in the shape of a dog. The upper torso of the demon was human, and it still managed to stand on two feet. A face with an elongated nose, pointed ears and sabre like teeth that slithered with an extended tongue. Pale, and it looked like death with bloodshot eyes and deep crease lines along the cheeks. It had no hair on its head other than pultruding blue veins that looked ready to burst.

Stealing Jia by Gail Koger

We could all use a few laughs these days. So why not try this sci-fi comedy, Stealing Jia, by Gail Koger? There's an excerpt to whet your appetite before you download your own copy. Let the author know what you think in the comments section and follow the tour for more. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

Jia grew up in an orphanage that turned children into master thieves and gave the school of hard knocks a run for its money. Jia’s psychic talents have kept her alive, but not out of trouble. While searching for her adopted brother, Jia finds herself on a galactic adventure with a horde of mischievous extra-terrestrial kids she’s determined to protect. Adding to the chaos is an Askole Battle Commander who claims she is his mate. How is that even possible? They’ve never met.

Trayon, the Battle Commander, is a deadly Askole. Huge. Battle hardened muscles. A regular warrior’s nightmare with black, armor-plated skin and tentacles. Who knew the scary guy was such an excellent kisser and had the heart of a romantic? All Jia ever wanted was a family of her own. Maybe an alien family wouldn’t be so bad.

To win Jia, Trayon must prove he loves her and she’s not some female the Coletti Overlord just sold him. But first, he has to keep the trouble magnet alive long enough to convince her.

Read an excerpt:

“What are you staring at?”

Trayon pointed at my legs. “Do not move!”

I looked down and gasped. I knew I had picked up some hitchhikers, but wow. There was a brown snake with a crocodile's head and bright blue eyes coiled around my left thigh. A baby dinosaur chewed on my right pants leg. “Merda!”

Pepe cautiously sniffed them. “Me like.”

I guess that was a good thing. I had to admit the little dinosaur was cute as a bug.

The Askole drew an enormous sword. “I will kill the vermin.”

“What? Stop!” I threw my hands out. “We don’t kill babies.”

“It is a Rodan. None can be allowed to live.”

“It’s a baby.” I stiffened as something moved in my hair. Had I picked up an alien version of lice too?

“Our law is quite specific. All must be destroyed.” Trayon advanced toward me.

The Rodan whimpered and tightened its grip on my leg.

Pepe growled menacingly. “No hurt.”

I pulled my laser pistol. “You harm one scale on that kid’s head, and I’ll shoot you.”

“The Rodan have your brother.”

“So, you think this baby is the mastermind behind his kidnapping?”

Trayon’s tentacles knotted. “I am your mate, and you will obey me. Lower your weapon.”

“I guess you haven’t heard, but Earth women aren’t good at following orders and I’m not your mate.”

Trayon tapped his gauntlet. “Your weapons have been disabled.”

I pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. Cazzo! There was no way I could take Trayon in hand-to-hand combat.

About the author:

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.

Late for Love (The Way Over the Hill Gang) by M.K. Scott

Cozy mysteries are always a lot of fun. Have you ever read about a bunch of senior sleuths solving mysteries? Check out an excerpt from Late for Love by M.K. Scott and let her know what you think! And then follow the tour for even more fun. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

The senior sleuths love a good laugh, but this conundrum is no laughing matter. A missing journalist, an African Grey parrot, and a possible mob connection sound like the beginning of a bad joke. Unfortunately, there is no punchline and no one, aside from the seniors, who would dare to take the case on.

Will their first chance to handle a case on their own prove to be way too much for them to handle, and more importantly, could this first be their last?

Read an excerpt:
“Bird inspector!” Gus blurted the words.

“What?” Half the time, Jake felt like he came in in the middle of a movie when talking to Gus.

“You know.” Gus bobbed his head. “You wanted to know how we could get into Lyre’s sister’s house. She has the parrot. We could pose as inspectors.”

“That’s…” The word ridiculous stuck in his mouth as he considered his current sum of possibilities. He had zero ways of getting his foot in the door. “Doable. Maybe they register parrots? We need a type of organization. Perhaps we can drop off some expensive parrot seed or something.”

Gus snorted. “Why does every idea involve spending money?”

He had a point. Every cold case they had solved did involve some money even if was just for gas. “It is what it is. Remember that Jim Rockford, television private eye, had a daily rate plus expenses.”

“Yeah,” Gus agreed. “All we have are expenses and no one footing our bill.”

Who would have thought that Global Pandemic, Self-Isolation, Cluster, and a Lockdown were to become the trendiest words in 2020? Who would have imagined the world would freeze and people would stay home shattered with fear, panic, uncertainty towards their future?
How do we adjust to this changing reality, when none of our questions have answers when plans turn upside down, things get totally out of control?
In her new book: “From My Balcony to Yours,” author Nino Gugunishvili shares her personal account during the first several months of the COVID -19 global pandemic in the form of short stories and observations.

Nino Gugunishvili’s writing biography includes a collection of short stories “You Will Have a Black Labrador” and a women’s fiction novel “ Friday Evening, Eight O’Clock.”

Read an excerpt:

Dance, Dance, Dance!

I didn't want to get out of bed today. I couldn't find the reason why I had to, why I couldn't snuggle in bed for the whole day. What did I have to do that needed jumping out and throwing myself into a routine? I could bring my laptop to my bedroom and connect with the outer world from there. Who'd care? Then I could go to sleep, wake up and sleep some more. Luckily, the more optimistic part of me decided that there are better rejuvenating ways, and I got out of my bedroom for coffee, news, and the social media frenzy. It seemed the world stood in the exact same place as yesterday. The virus outbreak, self-isolation, quarantine, social distancing, and clusters are the words we hear and use most often.

My immediate 'cluster' of friends is okay. Each handling the self-imposed stay at home time differently, ranging from mild panic to existential crises blended with self-irony and humor of all imaginable shades (read dark). All the usual remedies of taking our minds off from the downpour of negative news, like reading or watching TV shows and movies, didn't seem to work this time, at least for me. I need something more substantial, mind-blowing, tiring, and freeing. Something that would make me forget my weight, my double-chin, and my thinning hair. I need to see a happier face in the mirror today. Try dancing! I tell myself, but the lazy part of me starts laughing hysterically.

Your journey to becoming an author

My journey to becoming an author goes back to the winter of 2013 when I started writing my debut novel – Friday Evening, Eight O’Clock, about a young woman Tasha, who decides to change her life dramatically and relocates to Paris, France, diving into new adventures, romance, and rivalry. Much like Tasha, often without a second thought, I delved into writing, not thinking what would happen next; as I recall the process now, it seems I was driven by curiosity, excitement, and the novelty of the experience. Somewhere deep down, I always knew I’d want to write a novel but never considered it seriously enough to pursue until the clumsy, straight-forward, funny, slightly neurotic Tasha was born. In the 2015 Friday Evening, Eight O’Clock was finally published.

Fast forward to 2019, and a new collection of essays/short stories called You Will Have a Black Labrador came out. You’d think writing the second book would be more comfortable, but in many ways writing it was much scarier and more demanding than the first one. Contrary to my debut novel, You Will Have a Black Labrador is, to a great extent, autobiographical, and it felt strange and, at times, rather challenging to be a character.

Little did I know back in 2019 that we were about to enter the most challenging, frightening, dramatic year of 2020 with the Covid-19 Pandemic changing and shattering everything around us to the core.

Another collection of essays: From My Balcony to Yours, started as a series of blogs I was writing from March to September, and it was my close friend who actually suggested making a book out of it. I think From My Balcony to Yours follows all the skyrocketing emotional phases we went through, from fear and uncertainty to disillusionment, irony, sarcasm, disbelief, grief, but most importantly, and ultimately, hope, and that’s why maybe, I hope that this book will find its readers.

About Nino Gugunishvili

Nino Gugunishvili is the author of the two collections of short stories, “From My Balcony to Yours” and “You Will Have a Black Labrador.” Her women’s fiction novel “ Friday Evening, Eight O’Clock” was published in 2015. Nino lives in Tbilisi, Georgia. Her educational and professional background includes film, television, and journalism.

Realms, Kingdoms, and Spires - Russell Archey on creating the world in The Seven Spires

Crafting a fictional world often takes a lot more plotting and planning than you would imagine, especially if you're venturing into the fantasy realm. Today, Russell Archey not only shares with us an excerpt from his book The Seven Spires, but also takes us into his process for creating the Realms, Kingdoms, and Spires within. Be sure to also follow the tour for more! Best of luck entering the giveaway!

An incredible high fantasy adventure set in a world based on familiar fairy tales, folklore, and mythology, "The Seven Spires" is an epic story of dragons, magic, conquering evil, and discovering magnificent new places.

When a fearsome creature known as Wyvern begins terrorizing Emrallt, one of the seven realms of the continent of Septer, a group of heroes are brought together seemingly by fate to rally against him. A prince, warrior, wizard, and mysterious, sorceress-like sybil try to discover why a common maiden could be the best chance their kingdoms have against Wyvern’s growing forces that threaten to dominate each and every one of the ancient, arcane spires that bind their kingdoms, and world, together.

Read an excerpt:
“Jormungandr!” one of the warband cried out.

The creature was above ground, slithering across the sand effortlessly with its large and jagged scales. Coarse frills fanned from its neck. Its scale-covered muscles propelled it across the desert as though it were water.

Its roar was shrill and terrifying. It launched itself from the ground and toppled one of the warband who had managed to reach his stallion. Horse and rider were both taken by its horrible maw. The jormungandr spun about as it bit down on the warrior and his horse, disorienting them. It returned to the earth by way of the sinkhole it had created and the rider and his mount were never to be heard from again.

The Prince listened in terror to the eerie silence that fell. They had all climbed atop their stallions; looking and listening for any sign of the creature. Their swords and axes were drawn, but the men were visibly shaken by such a horrifying beast.

“What can be done against them?” the Prince whispered. It was in part to himself, and in part a question to the Warrior.

“Siege weapons,” the Warrior said glibly in response to the Prince. “Or the magic of the Red Wizard. A better question would be ‘why is it gone?’”

Realms, Kingdoms, and Spires

I love building worlds. It’s one of my favorite aspects of writing. I often begin building the world my characters are living in before the characters themselves are fleshed out. Part of living in that world is what helps define and drive the development of those living in the cities, countries, regions, continents, and kingdoms that I create.

One of the big challenges in bringing the continent of Septer, the setting of my first novel The Seven Spires, to life was establishing the difference between a realm and a kingdom. The easiest answer was to keep a strict separation between the two. A realm is often defined as a region or domain of influence or domination; a kingdom is ruled by a king or queen.

But, why is this important you may (or may not) be asking?

In The Seven Spires, there are…surprise!...seven realms. However, these realms are ruled also home to a sovereign kingdom ruled by a monarch. Each realm also is also home to its own very unique spire.

The spires existed before recorded history. Their architecture is beyond the engineering and even magical capabilities of the world’s inhabitants, so it’s a common belief that the spires somehow existed before humanity itself. They’re viewed as almost god-like by many peoples of the various kingdoms. In fact, the first cities were built around the spires—much like how many medieval cities were built around churches or castles—and, so, the kings and queens of Septer have their seats of power in the spires while the capital city of each kingdom is built at the respective spire’s foundations.

Each realm has a unique ecology, climate, flora, and fauna. The differences are sometimes so drastic, they make little scientific sense. This further empowers the belief that the spire’s have dominion over their realm—their sphere of influence.

However, each kingdom has built itself up around the various spires and has their own governing body. The kings and queens of Septer rule as they see fit. One kingdom for each spire. Emrallt is very centralized, with countryside towns and hamlets paying taxes and going about their business in a fairy-tale fashion. Avallonis is more medieval, with a lords-and-vassals system commonly seen in the Arthurian myths it’s based on. Edda is a warrior culture that values strength, loyalty, and sacrifice. Vitruvia is very secretive. Sion is unique in that the capital city and its castle were located separately from the Diamond Spire, which sits in the middle of a large citadel. Mythesta coexists with the fae kingdoms that call its dense, dark forests home. Upala is vaguely touched on in the book, but was originally designed around the geographical setting of ancient Greece.

So, anything that involves the unchangeable aspects of the nature and creatures that are under the sway of the spires is referred to as said spire’s realm; their domain, their influence. The mention of kingdoms is made when referring to the monarchs, the cities, the people; the human element, if you will. But, even the kingdoms are held to the rule of the spires!

Oh, and let’s not forget how the naming conventions for the colors work. The gemstone titles are reserved for anything involving the realm (Emerald Spire, Amethyst Realm). The color associate with that gemstone is given to anything involving the governing body, or kingdom, tied to that realm (Green Kingdom, Blue Prince, Red Warriors).

We won’t even get started on the wizards…

“Russell Archey has been writing since he was old enough to hold a pencil. His love for narratives, world-building, and story-telling has fed into nearly every aspect of his life: from his video and board game hobbies to pressing his most cherished books onto his unfortunate children (who will, one day, read the Lord of the Rings trilogy whether they like it or not). When he's not creating new worlds and horrifying things to threaten them with destruction, he's bringing other author's fantastic works to life as an audiobook narrator, spending time with his two children, and pressing his dear wife's eternal patience with his quirky habits.”

Josephine placed her hands on the banister, taking in several deep breaths to steady herself.

“Are you all right?” She heard Charles' familiar voice ask from behind her.

She spun around to find him a few feet away. She thought about bringing up her misgivings about Duncan, but the thought of saying them out loud seemed silly. Instead she asked, “What are you doing here?”

“I came to check on you.”

“You didn’t think I could do my job?”

He shook his head. “I know you’re capable, but it doesn’t hurt to have a second set of eyes or ears helping you out. I figured with it being a masked ball, I could blend in.”

"You do, you know, blend in,” she said, reaching out and touching the edge of his mask. He looked handsome in a tailored black suit and matching mask. If she didn’t know any better, she would have thought he was a nobleman. “I almost didn’t recognize you.”

“I should have surprised you then,” he said as he moved towards her. “And taken you onto the dance floor.”

“We can dance here,” she whispered, placing her hand on his chest.

“Would you like that?”

She nodded, allowing him to take her into his arms.

The muffled sound of the waltz could be heard through the closed doors of the veranda. They swayed to the beat of the music, Charles expertly executing the steps of the dance and guiding Josephine with precision. She reveled in how wonderful it felt to be held in his strong arms, enjoying the forbidden moment she shouldn’t be sharing with him. The longer they danced, the closer they became until they were only inches apart.

She could tell he wanted to kiss her, and if he tried, she was going to let him. She wanted to feel Charles’ lips on her own, to melt into his arms and find out if they fit together perfectly like she hoped.

“Josephine, we—”

Before he could finish speaking, there was a peel of laughter that interrupted him.

“Someone’s coming,” he said, releasing her from his grip and stepping back. “We shouldn’t be caught together.”

Without another word, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving Josephine alone. She returned to the ball, trying to push her stolen dance with Charles from her mind with no success.

Review of Christmas Cookies on a Cruise Ship by Parker Fairchild

I'm not a big fan of snow, so a cruise ship sounds good! And I do love some holiday romances. So enjoy an excerpt and my book review of Christmas Cookies on a Cruise Ship by Parker Fairchild. Share your thoughts with the author as you follow the book tour. And best of luck entering the giveaway!

On a Caribbean cruise, a platter full of cookies, and a shot of Christmas magic yields a perfect pairing.

Chemist and budding romance writer Olivia Chasen is on a cruise to avoid spending Christmas with her beautiful twin sister and new fiancé—Olivia’s ex. Now, thanks to her lonely, intoxicated ramblings on Santa’s lap, her fellow passengers think she’s in love with a fictional character.

Former Navy SEAL Commander Jace Morse has dealt with plenty of unusual situations in his career, but he’s never had the honor, the pleasure, or the privilege of being a beautiful and intelligent woman’s fantasy hero come to life. While he hasn’t officially met the sexy chemist, he’s sure eager to explore the chemistry that’s sizzling between them.

Bringing the charming SEAL together with the skeptical Olivia is going to take more than just Christmas cookies and a little help from Mrs. Claus; it’s gonna take a heaping dose of Christmas magic.

Read an excerpt:

“Dr. Olivia Chasen,” Santa’s jolly baritone popped her mental fuzzy bubble.

She stopped as she struggled to whirl around. “Me?” She touched her chest with a dramatic flourish she didn’t know she possessed.

A powerful spotlight illuminated her; its heat burned her already flushed face.

She pressed a clammy palm to her chest. “How do you know my name?” The haze in her mind was paralyzing all cognitive function.

“My dear girl,” Santa chuckled, “you should know by now that Santa knows everything and everyone,” he tapped an index finger to his temple.

Santa Claus turned to address the waiting line. “Girls, Boys, Moms, Dads, everyone, if you don't mind waiting for a brief moment, I'd like for Olivia,” he pointed a white gloved finger at her, “to please come up here on stage, and tell me what she wants for Christmas.”

She stood dumbfounded as the audience and the people in line clapped and chanted her name, “Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!”

Oh no! What was she going to do? She couldn’t possibly go up onto that stage. She was far too shy to address a theater full of people.

But if she didn’t go that would be so unexciting and so like the old Olivia.

But she wasn't unexciting! She was the new Olivia, and she was exciting! And she wanted to have fun! Correction: She was determined to have fun. Besides, she’d never see these people—her fellow passengers—ever again.

**My thoughts**

This is definitely one of the most unique meetings between the hero and heroine I have ever encountered! Jace is a real person, but it's like Olivia knew him already as she is writing about him in her new novel. And here he now is in the flesh. But he definitely existed before the figment of her imagination.

The two of them are brought together by a Santa Claus on the cruise that each of them are on for different reasons. He is there to celebrate a wedding; she is trying to escape a wedding, that of her ex-boyfriend to her identical twin sister. (There are so many feelings about that whole mess! Ugh!) And then speaking of her sister, there's another twist to the story related to that.

Quirky characters, cringeworthy comedic moments, Christmas cookies, a cruise ship, and a little contemporary romance.

Thank you to Goddess Fish and the author for a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Excerpt

BECKY STOPPED OUTSIDE the door when she heard Bo’s deep smooth masculine voice, which touched her skin like cashmere, soothing, comfortable and deliciously rich. The baritone made her want to lean her head against the wall and absorb every nuance of his voice into her skin.

“You have a lot of stuffed animals and dolls,” Bo was saying.

“This. Is. Bear. Soft.” In Becky’s mind’s eye she could see Luci rubbing her face against the stuffed animal.

“What’s this one’s name?”

He wasn’t worming his way into Luci’s life. She stepped into the room and Luci ran to her.

“Mom-my.”

Becky picked her up and kissed her cheek. “I need to talk to Bo.”

Luci ran to the kitchen and Becky faced Bo with steel-like determination. He stood from the bed and his tall frame looked out of place in this pink little girl’s room. Dark eyes stared back at her with a heat level that matched hers and she didn’t know if there was a way to win against him. It would be better if he wasn’t so darn good-looking. With his longish hair and growth of beard he reminded her of Keanu Reeves. And Bo was just as big a daredevil as the characters the actor played.

“You want to talk? Talk. I’ve been trying to get you to talk for years so this is a momentous occasion.”

“Stay away from my daughter.” Becky was tired, so tired, and this bickering was not helping. “Bo, please go home.”

“Okay.” He took a step toward her and she had to resist taking a step backward. A musky scent mixed with Irish Spring soap drifted to her, weakening her resolve. “I’ll go, but first, I want to know who Luci’s father is.”

“Bo...”

“I’m her father, aren’t I? You’ve kept it from me all these years.”

Review of A Song for Another Day by Maria Imbalzano

Please welcome Maria Imbalzano back to the blog! Earlier this year, I reviewed her historical romance Blueberry Swirl Waltz. Today she's back with a contemporary romance to tug at your heartstrings. Enjoy an excerpt and my book review. Be sure to leave her questions and comments as you follow the tour. And best of luck entering the giveaway!

Gigi Jenson, an up-and-coming Broadway star, finds herself in Willow Springs, Vermont, for the summer as director of their first annual community revue. This sleepy town is worlds away from her vibrant and beloved New York City, but the experience she’ll gain will be invaluable to her career.

Jason Simmons has lived in Willow Springs his entire life. Working several jobs while writing music, he yearns for a contract to record his songs. The one chance he had to make it in Nashville he blew due to stage fright.

When Jason volunteers to help Gigi with the revue, sparks ignite but their dreams are taking them in different directions. Will their love for each other ever guide them to the same path?

Read an excerpt:
Halfway through the song, the air in the tavern seemed to change. His gaze followed that of a few of the guys sitting nearby. Giselle had walked in. Not exactly walked. Glided. His heart picked up a quicker beat, as he concentrated on the words to the song he was singing. Thankfully, he could sing this song with no brain cells.

Dressed in black jeans—designer no doubt—a black silky tank top, and black-heeled sandals, she stuck out in the crowd like a glittering star in a dark, moonless sky. Her long blonde hair was pulled up into a high ponytail showcasing her elegant neck and dangly, silver earrings. Silver bangles graced her wrist. Definitely overdressed.

Her gaze clicked on his, and surprise lifted her perfectly arched brows.

She found an empty bar stool, perused the menu, and ordered something from Sarah. Apparently she was staying for a while. Maybe he’d join her on his break. She probably knew no one in town, which had to be difficult. The least he could do was introduce her around so she’d feel more at ease.

Maybe he’d even give her some tips on how to dress when coming to Finnigan’s.

Although she sure looked hot in those upscale black jeans.

**My thoughts**
I kept forgetting that this was not a holiday romance. I'm writing my review on December 1. Holiday romance books and movies are on my mind. And this contemporary romance does fit the formulaic mold of those beloved Hallmark movies.

Gigi is the classy and ambitious woman briefly coming into the small town from NYC who needs to learn how to slow down and appreciate life. Jason is the hottie local musician and jack of all trades who loves his small town and hides his talent. The two of them naturally are attracted to each other and develop a quick relationship. But what are they going to do when her time there is done?

He is able to soften her rough edges; she is able to bring him out of his shell. They're a perfect match, making beautiful music together.

Their story flows quickly, playing out on the pages like you're watching it on the screen. Actually, it's a little spicier than what you would find on Hallmark, so maybe Netflix would be a better place for the movie version to land. And like I said, it is very formulaic, but it was a great way to pass a cold evening at home while recovering from illness. I may have wanted a smidge more conflict between the two of them because it did wrap up and resolve quickly. But I still really enjoyed it. It looks like it may be the start to a new series?

Thank you to the author and Goddess Fish for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Read an excerpt:

As he got closer to the shrub, in the direction of the voice, a Raggedy Ann doll ducked its head out of the bush and bounced about, trying to get his attention. It looked like an old-style doll and something his grandparents would have played with as children. It had curly red hair, blue trousers, and a big, greedy smile.

A puppet show, he thought.

Archie wanted to touch the doll. It was so lifelike that it had him mesmerized, like a spell had been cast on him. He walked another foot to get a better look, more curious.

“Psst, psst … Want to play with me?” asked the Raggedy Ann. It was alive! Its mouth moved in a synchronized motion, but there was no ventriloquist behind it.

When Archie was at arm’s length from the doll, something grabbed his ankles and started to drag him. It pierced into his skin like long nails, penetrating and scratching. He screamed and kicked as panic set in, fighting back with all his might.

“Cecilia! Cecelia! Help me! Help me!” Archie yelled toward the other children where his sister looked on in horror. His waved his hands while being dragged facedown, scraping the soil and trying to grab onto anything he could.

With one hand on each ankle, the evil beneath the shrub latched onto him with painted black fingernails on white hands that looked dead as they continued to clutch onto him and pull him.

Archie managed to grab ahold of a log with both arms curled around it, holding as tightly as he could, like his life depended on it, which it did.
