Review of Men or Paws by Rich Amooi

Watch a dog for three weeks, get fifteen thousand dollars. Piece of cake, right?

Wrong.

First, I have to stay in my client’s guesthouse while he’s in the main house working on an important project. That may not sound so bad, but HE is Hollywood’s Bad Boy, Rocco Romano, voted “Sexiest Man Alive.”

The guy could charm the pants off a mannequin.

Luckily he’s not my type.

Seriously.

A rich, sexy, generous man? Pass. Ten-pack abs? Whatever.

My heart palpitations are obviously caused by something else.

As for the dog, he’s sweet and adorable, but he’s named Houdini for a reason.

Then I accidentally kiss him.

Rocco, not the dog.

Then he escapes.

The dog, not Rocco.

Things can’t get any worse, right?

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Men or Paws is a hilarious, enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy with sizzling chemistry.

Author Note: Ten percent of all proceeds from sales of this book will be donated to SPCA International. Your purchase contributes towards the safety and well-being of animals around the world. Thank you!

**My thoughts**

Rich Amooi is back with another winner in Men or Paws. Bonus: 10% of proceeds go to help animals via the SPCA International.

It's another one that would play out well as a movie.

Beth has a chip on her shoulder where Rocco is concerned. (And rightfully so!) But she needs the money to foot her new business, so she agrees to dogsit his aptly named pooch, Houdini.

Their first encounter is one of those cringeworthy comical moments that make you fall for them both and want to see them fall in love.

And I also wanted them both to become my friends, which is another sign of a fun story. Plus they aren't as stereotypical as you may expect.

The playful banter and bickering between the two just demonstrates their chemistry. Quirky extra characters add to the fun. I needed the smiles that this book delivered! 4.5*s!

Review of It's Not PMS, It's You by Rich Amooi

Ruth “Ruthless” Harper is on the verge of becoming managing partner at her all-male consulting firm and she won’t let anything stand in her way. That includes men, relationships, and that dreaded F word, FEELINGS—distractions she eliminated long ago.

After the worst day ever (a near-death experience and a public wedgie, for starters), Ruth realizes she doesn’t want to live and die alone. She puts together a business plan to find the perfect man and dives head first into the murky online dating pool. All she wants is a high-powered executive who understands how important her career is. If only it were that easy.

Problem is most men are intimidated by Ruth’s confidence and shocked by her bluntness. The exception being her landscape designer, Nick, whose cool demeanor and unsolicited dating advice are driving her nuts. He’s the antithesis of the business-oriented man Ruth envisions for herself, so why do all signs keep pointing back to him?

A romantic comedy novel for the ages. Order now. Don't delay. Operators are standing by.

**My thoughts**

How many times as women have we had to utter those words? Or at the very least, we have thought them. The title alone was enough to capture my attention, along with the cover. But I have also seen Rich Amooi recommended several times by authors I follow. I’m glad I gave it a chance.

It starts out with one of the best Meet Cutes I have ever read, involving a spin class and a wedgie. I deeply felt Ruth’s mortification and yet can totally see the same thing happening to me. I love it. And it sets the stage for a great relationship.

Ruth is one of those Type A women who wants control over just about everything. But she’s had to be hard-nosed to make a name for herself in the male-dominated corporate world. And you can guess what kinds of comments people make to her at times (referring to the title). She is currently in a battle with one other top dog for a coveted position and will do what it takes to win.

Nick used to live that kind of life, but grew to realize it wasn’t worth it. So now he pursues his real love in life, which happens to be landscaping. But he goes beyond just basic plants and seeks to create an oasis for his customers. Of course, he ends up working for Ruth.

Ruth and Nick are great for each other. I feel like he ends up teacher her the most, but they play well off of each other and challenge each other just enough to keep it interesting without being overbearing.

I loved watching their relationship grow from a working relationship to a friendship to more. I enjoyed the people around them in the lives, particularly Nick’s family. Special shout out to Dee, Ruth’s amazing assistant. She is incredible in her work and as a friend. I aspire to be that useful in peoples lives. She gets her own little romance going, but I want to see her star in her own book!

And I appreciated that they were an older couple instead of the young 20-somethings falling in lust and love.

I chuckled and smiled as I made my way through this one poolside. I am glad I took a chance on this author and will check out more of his work.

Review of Thanks for the Memories (Thankful Series #2) by Melissa Baldwin

A new beginning leads to a second-chance at romance.

Done with the frigid northern winters, Reagan Westbourne has an easy solution—move to Miami. It makes total sense. She can even live with her sister. But after a few months of enduring her quirky sibling's newlywed bliss, Reagan is ready to spread her wings and move out. Life with two fun roommates and a promising job completes the picture for Reagan. Almost.

When Reagan's old college friend, Dante, opens a new restaurant in Miami, the past mixes with the present. Afterall, he's the only man Reagan's ever had feelings for. And it seems the attraction might just be mutual. Yet when their paths finally seem to align, old and new friends enter the picture, leaving Reagan unsure of her feelings.

Could this second-chance be the answer, or is it time to leave the memories in the past?

(affiliate link)

**My thoughts**
We were introduced to Reagan and Dante in Thanks for the Love, and I was pretty sure their story would be up next. The two of them have been friends since college and have both ended up in Miami. Reagan is massively head-over-heels for him. But while Dante is also clearly attracted to Reagan, his main focus is still on his restaurant. And then other factors come into play.

What I liked about this book is that it is just as much about friendship as it is romance. You have the whole long-time friends discovering some attraction to each other, but maintaining comfort in that familiar friendship. You have Bethany, Reagan's lifelong best friend coming down from Chicago for a visit and how friendships can evolve and change over time and distance. You have the friendship between these new roommates that has ended up better than they had imagined. And then you have the unexpected twist in a friendship that was never anticipated. I think most of us will relate to a lot of these situations. I know I did, right down to the hottie chef.

And the title of this book is perfect. The relationships from your past define who you are today. And I mean all of them - the good and the bad. And sometimes you just need to leave the past in the past, but be grateful for the lessons you've learned.

This story definitely felt more complete than the first one, which was Gabby's story. Of course we know that Lila's story will be next, to round out the three roommates. I do have to say that I will almost want to get some stories on other characters after this. But to specify which ones would give away parts of this story and I don't want to give spoilers.

So yes, I enjoyed this one and am enjoying this series as much as Melissa Baldwin's others. (P.S. See if you can catch the nod to one of her cozy mysteries in this one.)

Review of Thanks for the Love (Thankful Series) by Melissa Baldwin

When your life crumbles around you, it's hard to find something to be thankful for. Nevertheless, Gabby Marshall is determined to start anew in sunny Miami. New city, new job, and two new interesting roommates bring lots of new opportunities for a fresh start. As well as some challenges and surprises. Gabby's putting her heart and soul into her new career, without the distraction of love getting in the way. Yet she keeps crossing paths with the gorgeous and welcoming Theo Jorgenson. Maybe Gabby could make one little exception and allow Theo in … except her new roommate and Theo are sworn enemies. Life in Miami could be promising … or it could fall apart. Again. Fans of the Golden Girls will love this modern, romantic comedy twist!

(affiliate link)

**My thoughts**
I originally read this as part of the Love in the City anthology by a bunch of favorite rom-com authors and then got it again on its own.

Gabby's life in Orlando is turned upside-down when she's planning her dream wedding, only to find out that her best friend and fiance have been having an affair for the past year. [And I feel like I could write a book of thoughts on that kind of betrayal, but I'll restrain myself.] She uses family connections to land a new job as a real estate agent in Miami. One of her new coworkers needs a roommate, so things are starting to fall into place nicely.

I admire Gabby for being able to pick up and move to a new city. I know from personal experience that it is not easy. And in spite of her troubles, she has given herself a clear idea of what she wants to focus on, namely her career to start, and no men.

But best-laid plans and all ... Gabby is one of those awkwardly accident-prone girls who gets herself into strange predicaments. She is my soul sister. But falling out of a hammock introduces her to her gorgeous neighbor, Theo, and makes her forget her one goal.

And I can't blame her. He is gorgeous, a good cook, intuitive, and genuinely kind. Sure, he and Gabby's roommate Lila don't like each other at all, but they have their reasons, and he gives off no sinister vibes.

They always say that you find your true love when you're not looking. And it feels like this could be the case here. But we have to wait for the next installment in the series to find out. Their story ends a little abruptly for me, though on a good note and not a cliffhanger. That's the one thing that I don't like about these anthologies at times. Just as I'm really getting into a story, it has to end. BUT my appetite is whet for the next installment. You know there is more to come with Gabby and Theo. Lila is still pining for her ex, Cal, who is Theo's best friend. And their other roomie Reagan has the hots for a local chef, Dante, whom she knew in college. The stage is set for a fun upcoming series and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Review of Fifty Frogs by Tawdra Kandle

Vivian is sick of dating. Sick of the way guys treat her, sick of living and crying by when and if they call . . . she’s just done. When her aunt reminds her that a girl has to kiss a lot of frogs before she finds her prince--Aunt Gail says that number is fifty--Vivian decides she’s taking control of her dating life: she’s going to go on a series of first dates only, and each one must end in a kiss. She begins chronicling each date--the good, the bad and the downright unbelievable--with a plan to turn the stories into an in-depth magazine series about the realities of dating in the twenty-first century. Everything’s going along according to plan until Vivian hits a bump in her road with Frog Number Five, who doesn’t seem to understand his role in this deal. And despite Vivian’s determination to make it all the way to the big five-oh, when fate keeps throwing this same man across her path, she begins to wonder if maybe it’s time to ditch the plan . . . and kiss just one more frog.

**My thoughts**

After finally reading The Cuffing Season, I had to go back and reread Fifty Frogs, the book that inspired that one. (I will say that each of these does work as a standalone, but you'll enjoy reading them together.) And I loved it as much the second time around as I did the first.

Vivian has just come home from an amazing three-month writer-in-residency program where she blogged about how Millenials are doing travel differently. (And can I just say that I would like to sign up for one of these, please?) She comes home ready to pick her life up where she had left it, only to discover that it is all gone - her apartment, her parents and sister, her job, and her boyfriend. The boyfriend is probably the least unsettling, because she knew they just were not right for each other. But that comfort thing, ya know?

Cue an entire life makeover. She moves in with her mom's best friend, affectionately known as Aunt Gail, and comes up with a column idea that she think will gain her some attention. Aunt Gail tells her that you have to kiss 50 frogs before you find your prince. So she decides to try out this theory and write about it all.

She meets some of the craziest men and gets herself into some very interesting situations. According to the author, these are all somewhat based on her own daughters' stories. And let me tell you, I related to every single one of them. In fact, I think I need to write my own Fifty Frogs column.

And of course, there is a great Meet Cute scene involving a very fine specimen of a seemingly normal man named Charlie. In fact, this book is part of a multi-author series called Meet Cute. I would like to have one of him, please!

There are plenty of moments to make you smile, as well as to make you cringe in solidarity. It's a fun romantic comedy escape for an afternoon.

Temporarily Out of Luck by Vicki Batman

Great job. What man? And murder. Newly employed at Wedding Wonderland, Hattie Cooks is learning the industry from a woman she greatly admires. When her former brother-in-law is found dead in his luxury SUV, all fingers point to Hattie’s sister who is planning her own I dos.

Detective Allan Wellborn is caught between a rock and a hard place—Hattie’s family and investigating the murder of a well-connected Sommerville resident, the same loser who was once married to Hattie’s sister. Determining who’s the bad guy—or gal—isn’t going to be easy and sure to piss off someone.

Can Hattie beat the clock to find out who murdered Tracey’s ex before she is charged with the crime and her wedding is ruined?

Read an excerpt:
Sometimes, I felt like a small white mouse housed in a cage with lots of small white mice, whose playground activities involved eating, sleeping, and continually revolving on the exercise wheel. Just like one rodent friend—who I named Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky, having a field day back-flipping from the top of the spinning wheel—something happened. Unexpectedly, I found myself airborne.

Not hurt, a sense of disappointment overcame me, plus a bit of confusion, and a whole lot of colorful adjectives too numerous to list. I, mostly known as Hattie Cooks, shook off the pine shavings and joined the rat race. Sometimes, life sucked.

But wallowing? Not a good solution.

Being positive? A better one.

In most cases, a pitstop was a good idea, and I found comfort in my chocolate stockpile. And in most cases, I found empty shelves, for I had little dough to supply my habit due to the loss of my adored job as an assistant buyer at Sommerville’s top-class department store, Tucker’s, and the subsequent low-paying temporary ones I reluctantly took in the interim. Due to the expenses of rent, food, utilities, budgeting became my new compadré. However, for my recent birthday, Mom suggested friends and family provide me with treats. They were generous—gifting lots and lots of my favorite M&Ms in vast colors and flavors.

Mom’s idea totally rocked as the best birthday gift ever.

From outside my door, I heard Allan Wellborn smack the doorframe.

“You know how to find me.”

I roused from my ruminations and banged my forehead against the wall.

Review of Murder With Strings Attached by Mark Reutlinge

I featured this mystery last week on the blogs (Andi's Book Reviews and Candrel's Crafts, Cooks, and Characters) and told you to stay tuned for my review. I had the chance to read this book this weekend and got a big kick out of it! Check out an excerpt and then my thoughts on this quirky mystery story. Sometimes even the most carefully conceived burglary can take an unexpected turn. Florence Palmer has her eye on concert violinist Aaron Levy's priceless violin. Unfortunately, she finds it's already been stolen. Her surprise doubles when the virtuoso she'd planned to burgle offers to hire her to help him steal it back. But they're not the only ones looking for the missing violin. When Flo inadvertently becomes the prime suspect in a case of murder, she and Aaron need to clear her name. Will they find the real killer and get the violin back to its rightful owner without anyone else, especially themselves, being killed?

Read an excerpt:

Passing the front desk on my way to the elevator, I wanted to avoid eye contact with any of the clerks on duty. But, like Lot’s wife, I couldn’t resist just a peek. Unfortunately, one of the check-in clerks, an older woman with gray hair pulled back into a tight bun, happened to be looking in my direction and our eyes met.

The woman immediately called to me, “Miss, would you please step over here?”

I returned a mimed “Who, me?” gesture. The bun lady nodded in the affirmative.

Damn, that’s all I need, I berated myself. I just had to look, didn’t I? But I knew I now had no choice but to comply. I walked over slowly as I tried frantically to think of answers, having no idea what the questions might be. Would I be asked who I was and what I was doing here? If so, would my answers be credible? When I reached the desk I tried to act nonchalant.

“Yes, ma’am?”

The bun lady said, “Just a moment, please,” and reached under the desk.

Totally irrationally it flashed through my mind that the woman was going to pull out a pistol and place me under arrest. Good thing I’d just peed, or I’d probably have done it now. It’s amazing what tricks a guilty conscience can play on you. What she actually pulled out, however, was a stack of letters. She handed them to me and, motioning toward a mail box mounted on the far wall, said, “Would you be a dear and drop these in the box over there?”

I accepted the letters and the assignment with relief. “Certainly, ma’am. No problem.”

I marched directly over to the mail box and deposited the letters. I then continued on my way to the service elevator, this time resisting any urge to look anywhere but straight ahead.

**My thoughts**

Our story begins with Flo uncomfortably crouched in a closet, attempting a burglary. She then backtracks to explain why she's there, and is a little scattered. And at first, I'm not sure I'm going to like this heroine who has purposely decided to become a burglar and whose best friend actually semi-supports her.

But I pressed on.

And when she gets back to the present to where she is caught by her intended victim and the tables turned on her, I was all in.

This story is actually quirky and delightful, rather light, and yet has plenty of plot twists that kept me engrossed.

It's naturally a bunch of borderline ridiculous situations that would likely never happen in real life. But that is what makes this kind of book so much fun to read.

The author is also an adept storyteller who is capable of making us believe that this craziness really happened. His detail brings the story to life, playing out in your mind like you are watching it on a screen. And I think this one would make for a fun movie.

I'm not sure if Flo has any other books about her [mis]adventures as a burglar, but I would definitely read about more of them!

Thank you to the author and Goddess Fish for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Murder With Strings Attached by Mark Reutlinger

Read an excerpt:

I was going to use my “one phone call” (assuming a person really gets one and that’s not just something they say in the movies) to call Aaron, but I didn’t have to bother. Almost as soon as I arrived at the police station, Aaron, who obviously had been watching developments and following the police car I was in, walked in and inquired how I might be released. Given the relatively minor nature of the charge, despite what they might actually suspect, and my clean record, despite all the burglaries they were thankfully unaware of, bail was set according to a standard schedule rather than my having to wait to see a judge the next day.

I don’t know how much it cost Aaron to bail me out, but of course whatever it was, he could well afford it; and besides, he owed it to me. After all, I was really just his employee, and surely posting bail is a standard employee benefit.

When all the necessary papers had been signed and funds transferred, Aaron and I walked out into the sunshine that I’d been afraid I wouldn’t be seeing for quite a while.

On the way to Aaron’s car, I gave him a hug and a little kiss on the cheek and thanked him for extricating me from the pokey and doing it so quickly. He looked a bit embarrassed by that, but he cleared his throat and said in his best businesslike manner:

“Okay, so why’d you shoot him, and where’d you put the violin?”

Stealing Jia by Gail Koger

We could all use a few laughs these days. So why not try this sci-fi comedy, Stealing Jia, by Gail Koger? There's an excerpt to whet your appetite before you download your own copy. Let the author know what you think in the comments section and follow the tour for more. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

Jia grew up in an orphanage that turned children into master thieves and gave the school of hard knocks a run for its money. Jia’s psychic talents have kept her alive, but not out of trouble. While searching for her adopted brother, Jia finds herself on a galactic adventure with a horde of mischievous extra-terrestrial kids she’s determined to protect. Adding to the chaos is an Askole Battle Commander who claims she is his mate. How is that even possible? They’ve never met.

Trayon, the Battle Commander, is a deadly Askole. Huge. Battle hardened muscles. A regular warrior’s nightmare with black, armor-plated skin and tentacles. Who knew the scary guy was such an excellent kisser and had the heart of a romantic? All Jia ever wanted was a family of her own. Maybe an alien family wouldn’t be so bad.

To win Jia, Trayon must prove he loves her and she’s not some female the Coletti Overlord just sold him. But first, he has to keep the trouble magnet alive long enough to convince her.

Read an excerpt:

“What are you staring at?”

Trayon pointed at my legs. “Do not move!”

I looked down and gasped. I knew I had picked up some hitchhikers, but wow. There was a brown snake with a crocodile's head and bright blue eyes coiled around my left thigh. A baby dinosaur chewed on my right pants leg. “Merda!”

Pepe cautiously sniffed them. “Me like.”

I guess that was a good thing. I had to admit the little dinosaur was cute as a bug.

The Askole drew an enormous sword. “I will kill the vermin.”

“What? Stop!” I threw my hands out. “We don’t kill babies.”

“It is a Rodan. None can be allowed to live.”

“It’s a baby.” I stiffened as something moved in my hair. Had I picked up an alien version of lice too?

“Our law is quite specific. All must be destroyed.” Trayon advanced toward me.

The Rodan whimpered and tightened its grip on my leg.

Pepe growled menacingly. “No hurt.”

I pulled my laser pistol. “You harm one scale on that kid’s head, and I’ll shoot you.”

“The Rodan have your brother.”

“So, you think this baby is the mastermind behind his kidnapping?”

Trayon’s tentacles knotted. “I am your mate, and you will obey me. Lower your weapon.”

“I guess you haven’t heard, but Earth women aren’t good at following orders and I’m not your mate.”

Trayon tapped his gauntlet. “Your weapons have been disabled.”

I pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. Cazzo! There was no way I could take Trayon in hand-to-hand combat.

About the author:

I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.

Review of All Bags Go to Cleveland by C.S. Hale

Welcome to the Name Before the Masses Tour for All Bags to Cleveland, a clever paranormal romantic comedy by C.S. Hale! I'm letting you know what I thought of the book, plus sharing an excerpt. You can also get a sneak peek into the author's life as she talks about balancing life and writing. Lots to enjoy here and then as you follow the tour! Plus there's a great giveaway at the end.

Angela Grimalke appears more blonde bombshell than the gremlin she is. But there is no denying her supernatural truth after her clumsiness gets her fired from her modeling career. Forced to work for her family’s upscale airline, she spends her days slinging luggage and wishing her parents would get off her back about finding a nice gremlin guy to settle down with.

Relationships were the last thing on her mind, not that her family would accept that.

For Dave Ford his frequent business travel made it next to impossible for him to find a woman who could tolerate his chaotic schedule. Which is why he appreciates Angela. Neither of them are looking for love, but Dave feeds Angela's addiction for chocolate while she provides him with the chaos to keep him on his toes.

However, as Angela’s parents bombard her with a parade of "eligible" gremlin men at their weekly family dinners, she finds herself torn between who she longs to be and her family’s expectations. Will she give in and live the life of magic they want for her? Or risk it all by to confessing to Dave that she isn’t human?

Read an excerpt:
“You owe me.”

Angela glanced up from her computer screen. Dave Ford stood in front of her. The blood drained from her face. “Do I?” She raised her “helpful” smile.

“Yes.” Dave handed over his passport and put the Louis Vuitton garment bag on the scale. “Last time, you sent my bag to Cleveland.”

“The system isn’t perfect,” Angela said, punching Dave’s information into the computer. “Things do happen sometimes.”

“You control the system. I think you owe me a glass of wine for having to find a tailor at six a.m. I had a nine o’clock business meeting and just my jeans and sweatshirt.”

“Hmm. By that reckoning, I think I’d owe the tailor for having to get you a functional suit so quickly at that early hour.”

“I tipped him £100. Least you can do is buy me a glass of wine in return.”

Angela lifted her gaze. Dave—all six feet of him with his fabulous hair— had a hopeful expression on his face.

“I’m not in the habit of buying strange men alcohol.”

Dave stuck his hand out. “Hi. Dave Ford. Business traveler.” Angela laughed. “All I’m asking for is a glass of Malbec. Or maybe pinot noir. Small price to pay in comparison to my having to fight off jet lag via acupuncture.”

“Acupuncture?”

Dave shrugged. “It was early for the tailor. His aim wasn’t quite what it could have been.”

Angela dipped into Dave’s mind. The tailor had stabbed him a couple of times. And Dave was playing with her. He wanted to see what she’d do.

**My thoughts**
First I have to say that I love the title of this book. That's what first captured my attention, followed by the cover. And then when I read the blurb, I knew I had to read this book. Whoever thought of a paranormal romantic comedy with a gremlin as a lead character? I always think of the little dudes from Gringotts, or even Gizmo and company. Angela shows us that they can have a fun and playful, even though still mischievous, side. I was amused at the little games she would play with people and kind of wish I had that ability.

She meets Dave after she messes with him and his bags during one of his flights. (So now we all know why our bags don't necessarily go where we go!) He is totally on to her and manages to finagle a date. The two of them start hanging out more and more, and I absolutely love their interactions.

Despite Angela and her family being supernatural creatures, I completely felt like so many of their conversations and situations were very true-to-life. I could see just about all of this unfolding in my own life or that of my friends. The realness peppered with the paranormal fun made this a giggle-worthy read that I greatly enjoyed. I got really annoyed when people interrupted me while I was reading it!

Thank you to the author and to Goddess Fish for a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

*******************************

Balancing life and writing;

I am a slow writer. Usually. While I plan out all my plot points via Save the Cat, I pants my way from point to point. I love that gasp out loud I get when something is finally revealed. From start to finish, most of my books take a year to write. I do first drafts longhand in a notebook. I usually require two. And more Pilot G2 pens than I can count. I once had to go hunting for them in London when I ran out, and I was shocked at the £3.50 price for a single pen! Sometimes I make it all the way to “The End” before I do my first edit, typing everything up, and sometimes I make it 4/5 of the way through before I type it all into a Word document.

In my day job, I’m an elementary teacher. I work 12 to 15 hours a day nearly seven days a week. I find it much easier to edit when school is in session than to write new words. The advantage of being a teacher is that I do have several weeks off during the summer. This is when I get the bulk of my new writing done. Though I have found it’s easier to write if I go away somewhere. I love writing in London and have found I can write an average of 34 longhand pages a week if I’m holed up in my favorite studio apartment (a whopping 14 sq meters) not far from Euston Station. I walk to the parks every day and write, as well as write in my room as I watch all of London drive by. My favorite example of life colliding with art came when I had just written that my character needed to “stop viewing everything as a life or death situation” and I looked up to see a ladder fire truck pull up and park outside my second story window.

My critique partner Bethany Adams writes with two young school age children. She’s even managed to get her word counts in while homeschooling during this pandemic. I don’t know how she does it. Balancing life with writing needs to happen. You can’t create beautiful words if your soul is dry. Cleveland took an initial three years to complete, and it would not be the book it is if I had had to finish it under deadline. While I can force myself to put out one a year, I’ve given myself permission to take two years to get out the companion novel to Cleveland - Ghost Chilis Are Real. This new school year is going to be incredibly stressful, and I want to be mindful of that and be kind to myself. But my characters also want me. I’ve got 7 different books that are begging for my attention but only so much time and energy.

So write. Put words on the page. But also give yourself time to breathe. The characters will still be there waiting to welcome you.

Finding a body in the freezer of the family deli isn’t the way Madonna San Valentino planned to start her day.

Forced to work together, she vows to keep their relationship cool and professional. But with the sexy, longing looks he tosses her at every turn, Madonna’s resolve is weakening.

Read an excerpt:
Being the oldest of six kids and the only girl in the mix, it takes a lot to scare me.

My brothers are, each and every one of them, a pain in the ass to their cores and I’d grown up the victim of their arguably stupid shenanigans too many times to count. Cooked linguini placed in my bed to look like worms; a farting cushion placed on my chair at the dinner table; toothpaste spread on my school lunch sandwich instead of peanut butter. More times than I could remember one of them would hide in my closet then jump out at me when I least expected it. Anything and everything dumb and dumber they could think up to annoy me, they’d done. And still did to this day if they thought they could get away with it. Chronological maturity hadn’t made its way to their brains yet and they all still acted liked little boys when it came to infuriating me.

This spine tingling sense of unease rippling through me didn’t feel like one of their usual pranks.

But with my brothers, you never know.

“I swear on all that’s holy, Giacomo,” I called out, naming the brother voted most likely to do something moronic, “if this is some dumbass attempt to scare me, I’m gonna make you suffer.”

Excerpt

I waited another ten seconds, straining to hear anything that would give away the intruder’s location.

Still nothing.

I forged ahead, the snail’s pace turning my ankles into jelly.

One more step to go.

I stopped and crouched up against the inside wall of the staircase. Just earsplitting silence. Gathering myself, I summoned whatever semblance of courage remained in my trembling body.

A second later, my brain issued the command. Okay—it’s go time.

I lunged up toward the last stair, propelling myself into the loft.

At least that was the plan.

My leading foot caught the lip of the top stair, sending me crashing down. The pepper spray sailed across the room as the elbow of my outstretched arm slammed into the wood floor. I didn’t hear the dispenser hit anything, so either the killer caught it, or it landed in the pile of clean clothes on the floor. Either way, not good. Worse yet, the raised bat fell backward, its barrel cracking me on the back of the head before bouncing and rolling down the stairs.

Disarmed and face down, I lay sprawled between the top step and the floor of the room. Before the killer could react, I scrambled to my feet and hit the light switch.

And there he was, his intensity palpable.

I stared into his piercing eyes.

About the Author

Ever wonder what retired business executives do after they have put in years of effort for society and decide it is time to hang up their hat? Perhaps strolling along the country club’s fairway, or lounging on a 50-foot yacht?

Alas, B. T. Polcari is unlike your typical retired executive. Empty nester and Scarlett Knights alum, Polcari is still learning the meaning of “retired” while feverishly typing away on the next new book idea, smashing the fuzz off the little green tennis ball, or blasting bowling pins for a perfect game. Yes there is a boat, but not one that comes with its own crew; this retiree prefers to bustle along a serene lake in a quaint single seat Sunfish sailboat.

Perhaps the only time BTP can be found in a quiet moment is while enjoying the morning company of two family dachshunds over a newspaper and cup of coffee. B. T. Polcari currently resides in Chattanooga, TN and is thrilled to be fulfilling a childhood dream of becoming a published author.

******************

The Official Edger Playlist
(with light commentary)

The official Edger “mixtape” can be found here. It’s meant to be a story companion for fans of the series who also love music. The Kirkus Review for Edger can be found here, and does a fine job summarizing the book for readers unfamiliar with the series.

“Nominal” —#1 Dads
Edger is about a typical Dork—tech support at Über Dork, a subsidiary of InstaTron—who has a chance at becoming the world’s first superhero. His power is entering the dreamlike Collective Unconscious, and the lyrics to “Nominal” couldn’t align more perfectly.

“Wonderboy” —Tenacious D
A superhero song by Jack Black which features in a book with a cast of slackers. Need I say more?

“Action Cat” —Gerard Way
A song about missing your ex. When we meet Edger, he’s still hung up on Kate. “Say you miss me?” the song asks. “And I said I miss you.”

“Invest” —Big Scary
“We store our secrets deep down,” is an evocative phrase, and very appropriate for a book dwelling in the subconscious hive mind of humanity.

“Junior Kickstart” —The Go! Team
A nice, action-y, upbeat song to supply the “action” portion in “action-comedy” fiction.

“The Ninjas” —Barenaked Ladies
Comedic music about ninjas! One of Edger’s dead allies is the famous Iga ninja, Hattori Hanzo.

NFL of Fox Theme Music
This piece is here to symbolize a fictional Green Bay Packer, Yourmajesty Fapa’fapa-Bal’buster.

“Milk Cow Blues” —Kokomo Arnold
Edger must find the villainous InstaTron Tron, a nano artificial intelligence which has been dart-gunned into the butt of a 900-pound Dexter cow in a porn store heist gone very wrong.

“Rocket Scientist” —Teddybears
In the scene’s finale, our heroes venture to a nightclub called Underwearld, and this song is featured. One of the influences of the Edger series is the Zachary Levi action/comedy TV show, Chuck, which also featured this song in season five.

“Rapture” —Blondie
What a weird song. What a weird book. This song is also featured while Edger and Mary are trapped inside a disco ball water torture chamber spinning above the dance floor in Underwearld. Originally, I’d thought to use “Dancing Queen,” but that song is ubiquitous to the point of cliché, and Blondie doesn’t get enough love.

“Thriller” —Michael Jackson
Also featured in finale, when an army of clones takes to the dance floor to battle our hero, who naturally summons Michael Jackson…

Posthumus Zone, NFL on CBS Opening Intro Theme
Our hero’s final boss battle is the Green Bay Packer—it’s showtime!

“Knock-down Drag-out” —Weezer
Edger is the first of a trilogy about a California boy who discovers a hidden world of super spies and supervillains locked in a knock-down drag-out war. Weezer is among the quintessential California bands, and the song is apt.

“Fake Your Death” —My Chemical Romance
Readers will understand why this song is here.

“Afterlife” —Arcade Fire
After faking your death, what’s left?

“We Do It Together” —The Go! Team
Another great, upbeat song from The Go! Team, and has the feel of a good epilogue-type song for the playlist. Edger finishes with newfound allies who will help him “do it together” going forward.

“Sweet Mary” —Weezer
While the first book in my Edger trilogy ends on a decidedly ambiguous note about whether or not Edger’s super spy “cover girlfriend” can be trusted, one thing that isn’t ambiguous are his feelings for her. Weezer’s song is about salvation, of sorts. Edger needed some saving, he was languishing in his job, old before his time, until sweet Mary rekindled his sense of adventure.

Edger (2018) by David Beem

Meet Edger (Ed-jer), a twenty-six-year-old gadget retail dork destined to become the world’s first superhero! His superpower: the ability to channel the Collective Unconscious, a psychic network connecting the living and the dead. In his arsenal are the skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, the wisdom of the ages...and the dancing chops of Michael Jackson—including that one twisty foot move, crotch grab, and fedora tilt. But there's a catch... Like every psychic super power to get administered through a hypodermic needle, this one comes with a prick. Someone seems to have misplaced the booster necessary for stabilizing his superpower. Without it, Edger has three days before his brain turns to pudding. Join our Dork of Destiny as he overcomes the world’s greatest butt, two rival Cluck-n-Pray gangs, an evil cow, a Green Bay Defensive Tackle, rifle-toting assassins—and a pair of stoners who inadvertently create the world’s first supervillain after a wild night on Twitter!

Read an excerpt:
The water is filling.

We’re spinning.

Blondie is rapturing.

Below us, the nightclub turns like a sparkling dream. Worse, Underwearld is wallpapered in phosphorescent art photos of Caleb in his Calvin Kleins.

“Hey Edger—it’s Caleb!” says Mary, banging her shoulder against the side of our disco ball water torture prison and sloshing water. “Caleb! Caleb!”

I roll my eyes. “Of course you know Caleb. Because the universe just couldn’t let me die without letting me know: Hey—Mary knows Caleb.”

“Edger, Caleb’s H.A.R.D.O.N.”

“Hard-on for you, hard-on for Kate—”

“Oh my God, Edger. Not now, okay? High Risk Agency for Regulating the Defense Of the NFL.”

“What!? That doesn’t even make any sense! It should be H-A-R-D-O—wait, somebody capitalized the freaking O—?! You know, my tax dollars paid someone to capitalize that letter O.”

“Really? Really, Edger? You want to do this now?”

“That’s what they always say too: ‘You wanna do this now.’ But notice they never balance the budget. All I’m saying is, you gotta talk about it sometime.”

“Edger! We. Are about. To die.”

So I’m panting, she’s panting, and Caleb’s down there scanning the room in front of a larger than life phosphorescent photograph of his crotch. Because apparently all paths in life lead there.

“Caleb!” Mary yells.

“Caleb!” I yell.

And so there we are, yelling our butts off, banging our shoulders into the wall, water sloshing over our faces—you know, not panicking.

Then the water level reaches our chins.
