Battlefield Earth: A Timeless Science Fiction Classic

It's the 40th anniversary of the release of the epic sci-fi novel Battlefield Earth. This story is as gripping as the sci-fi and fantasy icons Dune, Starship Troopers, and Lord of the Rings. So if you are someone who appreciates epic sagas that pull you into the story and don't let up, you'll have to try this.

Like most novels of this significance, it inspired an action movie. Roger Christian, one of the Star Wars directors, directed it, and John Travolta produced and starred in it as the evil alien. While you may not have seen it, it has become a sci-fi classic over the years. The expanded Blu-ray edition recently released with bonus content.

Edger (the audio book) by David Beem

Welcome to the book tour for Edger by David Beem, now available in an audio book! Check out the playlist that you'll need to accompany this story, plus an excerpt. You can follow the tour for even more. Be sure to let him know your thoughts in the comments and enter the giveaway. And as always, more cowbell!

******************

The Official Edger Playlist
(with light commentary)

The official Edger “mixtape” can be found here. It’s meant to be a story companion for fans of the series who also love music. The Kirkus Review for Edger can be found here, and does a fine job summarizing the book for readers unfamiliar with the series.

“Nominal” —#1 Dads
Edger is about a typical Dork—tech support at Über Dork, a subsidiary of InstaTron—who has a chance at becoming the world’s first superhero. His power is entering the dreamlike Collective Unconscious, and the lyrics to “Nominal” couldn’t align more perfectly.

“Wonderboy” —Tenacious D
A superhero song by Jack Black which features in a book with a cast of slackers. Need I say more?

“Action Cat” —Gerard Way
A song about missing your ex. When we meet Edger, he’s still hung up on Kate. “Say you miss me?” the song asks. “And I said I miss you.”

“Invest” —Big Scary
“We store our secrets deep down,” is an evocative phrase, and very appropriate for a book dwelling in the subconscious hive mind of humanity.

“Junior Kickstart” —The Go! Team
A nice, action-y, upbeat song to supply the “action” portion in “action-comedy” fiction.

“The Ninjas” —Barenaked Ladies
Comedic music about ninjas! One of Edger’s dead allies is the famous Iga ninja, Hattori Hanzo.

NFL of Fox Theme Music
This piece is here to symbolize a fictional Green Bay Packer, Yourmajesty Fapa’fapa-Bal’buster.

“Milk Cow Blues” —Kokomo Arnold
Edger must find the villainous InstaTron Tron, a nano artificial intelligence which has been dart-gunned into the butt of a 900-pound Dexter cow in a porn store heist gone very wrong.

“Rocket Scientist” —Teddybears
In the scene’s finale, our heroes venture to a nightclub called Underwearld, and this song is featured. One of the influences of the Edger series is the Zachary Levi action/comedy TV show, Chuck, which also featured this song in season five.

“Rapture” —Blondie
What a weird song. What a weird book. This song is also featured while Edger and Mary are trapped inside a disco ball water torture chamber spinning above the dance floor in Underwearld. Originally, I’d thought to use “Dancing Queen,” but that song is ubiquitous to the point of cliché, and Blondie doesn’t get enough love.

“Thriller” —Michael Jackson
Also featured in finale, when an army of clones takes to the dance floor to battle our hero, who naturally summons Michael Jackson…

Posthumus Zone, NFL on CBS Opening Intro Theme
Our hero’s final boss battle is the Green Bay Packer—it’s showtime!

“Knock-down Drag-out” —Weezer
Edger is the first of a trilogy about a California boy who discovers a hidden world of super spies and supervillains locked in a knock-down drag-out war. Weezer is among the quintessential California bands, and the song is apt.

“Fake Your Death” —My Chemical Romance
Readers will understand why this song is here.

“Afterlife” —Arcade Fire
After faking your death, what’s left?

“We Do It Together” —The Go! Team
Another great, upbeat song from The Go! Team, and has the feel of a good epilogue-type song for the playlist. Edger finishes with newfound allies who will help him “do it together” going forward.

“Sweet Mary” —Weezer
While the first book in my Edger trilogy ends on a decidedly ambiguous note about whether or not Edger’s super spy “cover girlfriend” can be trusted, one thing that isn’t ambiguous are his feelings for her. Weezer’s song is about salvation, of sorts. Edger needed some saving, he was languishing in his job, old before his time, until sweet Mary rekindled his sense of adventure.

Edger (2018) by David Beem

Meet Edger (Ed-jer), a twenty-six-year-old gadget retail dork destined to become the world’s first superhero! His superpower: the ability to channel the Collective Unconscious, a psychic network connecting the living and the dead. In his arsenal are the skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, the wisdom of the ages...and the dancing chops of Michael Jackson—including that one twisty foot move, crotch grab, and fedora tilt. But there's a catch... Like every psychic super power to get administered through a hypodermic needle, this one comes with a prick. Someone seems to have misplaced the booster necessary for stabilizing his superpower. Without it, Edger has three days before his brain turns to pudding. Join our Dork of Destiny as he overcomes the world’s greatest butt, two rival Cluck-n-Pray gangs, an evil cow, a Green Bay Defensive Tackle, rifle-toting assassins—and a pair of stoners who inadvertently create the world’s first supervillain after a wild night on Twitter!

Read an excerpt:
The water is filling.

We’re spinning.

Blondie is rapturing.

Below us, the nightclub turns like a sparkling dream. Worse, Underwearld is wallpapered in phosphorescent art photos of Caleb in his Calvin Kleins.

“Hey Edger—it’s Caleb!” says Mary, banging her shoulder against the side of our disco ball water torture prison and sloshing water. “Caleb! Caleb!”

I roll my eyes. “Of course you know Caleb. Because the universe just couldn’t let me die without letting me know: Hey—Mary knows Caleb.”

“Edger, Caleb’s H.A.R.D.O.N.”

“Hard-on for you, hard-on for Kate—”

“Oh my God, Edger. Not now, okay? High Risk Agency for Regulating the Defense Of the NFL.”

“What!? That doesn’t even make any sense! It should be H-A-R-D-O—wait, somebody capitalized the freaking O—?! You know, my tax dollars paid someone to capitalize that letter O.”

“Really? Really, Edger? You want to do this now?”

“That’s what they always say too: ‘You wanna do this now.’ But notice they never balance the budget. All I’m saying is, you gotta talk about it sometime.”

“Edger! We. Are about. To die.”

So I’m panting, she’s panting, and Caleb’s down there scanning the room in front of a larger than life phosphorescent photograph of his crotch. Because apparently all paths in life lead there.

“Caleb!” Mary yells.

“Caleb!” I yell.

And so there we are, yelling our butts off, banging our shoulders into the wall, water sloshing over our faces—you know, not panicking.

Then the water level reaches our chins.

Top 10 Things About Jake from Murder by Munchausen Series by M.T. Bass

Sometimes what seems to be the worst thing ends up being the best thing. Such is the case in the life of Jake, the star of the Murder by Munchausen series by M.T. Bass. Find out more about him in this Top 10 by the author. Let the author know what you think and ask questions along the way as you follow the rest of the tour. You can also enjoy an excerpt, plus enter the giveaway!

***************************

Top Ten About…Jake

Jake is the main character of the Murder by Munchausen Trilogy Series. His demotion from Robbery/Homicide into the Artificial Crimes Unit ultimately saved the career of his former work partner and now lover, Maddie, but left him to repo criminally wayward robots—until he crosses paths with the "Baron" who is resurrecting history's notorious serial killers, giving them a second life in the bodies of hacked and reprogrammed Personal Assistant Androids, then turning them loose to terrorize the city. While his flaws likely exceed a “Top 10 List,” I count these on the positive side of the ledger:

  1. He absolutely, positively hates self-driving cars…and he drives a classic black convertible Mustang……and an Indian Chief Dark Horse
  2. His favorite pistol is a Colt 1911 (and hates the department issued Glocks)
  3. His favorite beer is Shiner Bock
  4. He grills a mean Fred Flintstone steak
  5. His cat’s name is Frank (like mine)
  6. He reads books and hates Google, Bing, Facebook, Twitter, and pretty much the entire Internet
  7. He likes flapjacks and black coffee
  8. His taste in women is exquisite
  9. His relationship with authority is, well, problematic
  10. And his mancave is awesome

So it goes…

***~~~***

About the series:
A Cyber Crime Thriller Series: Notorious serial killers digitally resurrected to live & hunt again in hacked replicants, pursued by detectives of the Artificial Crimes Unit.

Read an excerpt:
Murder by Munchausen Chapter 1 – The Warehouse

This particular Android Subject apparently went off the rails and killed a luckless pedestrian on his way to a bodega for some iced tea or bottled water to quench his thirst. A one-in-a-million occurrence, but every so often it still happens. Anyone who believes technology is infallible is a fool. The incident didn’t appear all that nefarious when first reported, but shortly thereafter the Atlas data stream went dark and patrol called our unit in. It quickly became obvious we were dealing with a malware hit, not a malfunction. The luckless pedestrian was actually not so luckless, being on what appeared to be the winning side of a particularly nasty termination suit with his ex, who we suspected had outsourced the final settlement to extra-judicial parties.

It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it “Murder by Munchausen.” For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest.

EC’s scanner returned a hard ping. His quick double blink put his cross-hairs up on my lens and I followed his eye line to the northwest corner of the building…

M. Ferguson Powers, author of Counting on Trust on her writing journey

All of us who are writers have traveled along this path in our own way, each with our own unique story. Today, author M. Ferguson Powers shares hers with us. You can also take a peek inside of her book Counting on Trust and then follow the tour for even more. Be sure to leave comments and questions along the way. Best of luck in the giveaway!

**************************

My journey to becoming a writer

My background and experience have played a big role in all my novels, but especially Counting on Trust.

My academic background included a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s in experimental psychology from George Mason University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

After graduation, I taught microbiology, headed a university office of research, and served as executive director of two university-business partnership centers.

I became interested in writing during my academic career and saw it as a way to highlight important issues of our time in a fictional story format. I have been writing for over 15 years, since before my retirement from faculty life. I published my first novel Each Unique and Fascinating in 2012. My second work was OrcaSpeak which is actually the sequel to my latest novel Counting on Trust. Both of the earlier stories take place in the Pacific Northwest and involve themes of love intermixed with eco-activism.

Counting on Trust evolved out of my interest in globalization and its impacts, especially with regard to China and its relations with the U.S. This started when I accompanied my husband on a trip to China in 1978 with a delegation of faculty members from the University of Pittsburgh. At that time, China was just opening up to the West.

The idea for a story about corporate intrigue came while my husband and I were living in Nebraska. There was a lot of research on GMO foods being done at some of the universities there. We lived on a small lake, and I decided to invent a company, Omniprotein, that was doing research on GMO fish. The theft of this company’s intellectual property by a Chinese general kicks off all the subsequent action.

As its title implies, the book is all about trust. One of my biggest inspirations has been the work of Jane Austen. I appreciate the way she deconstructed relationships and the social norms around romance and marriage in her day. A major intention in writing Counting on Trust was to use the personal stories of the characters to explore how privacy, intimacy and trust are changing in our technology driven society. The book follows three couples of different ages and backgrounds, each struggling with issues of trust. I wanted to draw a good picture of how easily trust can be broken and how difficult it can be to restore that trust.

In this suspense-charged, touching novel, Counting on Trust, information is stolen from a U.S. genetic engineering company (Omniprotein) by an employee promised payment by a Chinese general who wants to profit from selling the company’s technologies in the military region of China he commands.

• To force quick payment the thief attacks fellow employees and threatens to continue until his money arrives. Will his next targets be: young lovers, computer geek Gabriel and gorgeous biologist Selena, who are discovering loving sex while trying to overcome post-traumatic effects of Selena’s girlhood rape.

• Company president, Eleanor, who’s determined to keep some privacy and intimacy although her job’s high profile and her husband, Charley, has just had prostate cancer surgery.

• Venture capitalist, John, who plans to duplicate Omniprotein’s facility in China and reunite with his ex-wife, fashion designer Ziyi, who returned to Shanghai after their only child died.

The personal stories of these couples explore how privacy, intimacy and trust are changing in our social-media age. They paint a compelling portrait of our time.

Tears of Glass by David Lake now available as audiobook!

Tears of Glass

A failed quarterback, failed husband and failed human being, finds redemption through the music of a failed songwriter.

This darkly humorous thriller is based on real events, including the ' Accidental ' deaths of twenty two UK scientists all working on US missile systems.

Morgan, a drinking, smoking, womaniser, is drawn to the iconic music of the seventies - Dylan, Carole King, Neil Young, Led Zep - but when he acquires a rejected demo tape by a bluesy pianist, his friends start to meet with bizarre, ' Accidental ' deaths. It eventually dawns that HE is the target . Running to the Californian desert, picking up the inevitable girl en-route, he has no idea that he has stumbled. literally, upon the biggest conspiracy the Intelligence Services have tried to hide since The Wall came down.

An imminent Nuclear Armageddon.

The contrast between those who rule our lives and those who try to live by the rules, is brought into sharp focus through a collection of disparate characters, all having their own agenda. The underlying darkness of the message is almost totally masked by the nature of the ' Ripping Yarn.' The reader rides a wave of action, humour, pathos, passion, violence and even enlightenment.

'The Snow Queen' by Michael Cunningham Audio Book Giveaway

Thesnowqueenaudiobanner

snowqueenaudioA darkly luminous new novel from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Hours

Michael Cunningham’s luminous novel begins with a vision. It’s November 2004. Barrett Meeks, having lost love yet again, is walking through Central Park when he is inspired to look up at the sky; there he sees a pale, translucent light that seems to regard him in a distinctly godlike way. Barrett doesn’t believe in visions—or in God—but he can’t deny what he’s seen.

At the same time, in the not-quite-gentrified Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, Tyler, Barrett’s older brother, a struggling musician, is trying—and failing—to write a wedding song for Beth, his wife-to-be, who is seriously ill. Tyler is determined to write a song that will be not merely a sentimental ballad but an enduring expression of love.

Barrett, haunted by the light, turns unexpectedly to religion. Tyler grows increasingly convinced that only drugs can release his creative powers. Beth tries to face mortality with as much courage as she can summon.

Cunningham follows the Meeks brothers as each travels down a different path in his search for transcendence. In subtle, lucid prose, he demonstrates a profound empathy for his conflicted characters and a singular understanding of what lies at the core of the human soul.

The Snow Queen, beautiful and heartbreaking, comic and tragic, proves again that Cunningham is one of the great novelists of his generation.

Author Paul Kyriazi on Frank Sinatra, Jr. recording his audio book 'McKnight's Memory'

After my producer, Larry Metzger and myself had finished recording all the actors and dramatizations for our audio-book McKnight's Memory, we still needed a narrator.

Larry had heard Frank Sinatra Jr's audio commentary his father's movie, Robin and the Seven Hoods and was impressed with his voice and articulation, as well as Frank's respect for character actors, so Larry asked me, "What about Frank Sinatra Jr for the narrator?" I said ,"It would be great to get him, but maybe impossible."

Larry got in touch with Frank's office and pitched the deal for him to record with us, even though other Hollywood agents and casting directors had told Larry that he could never get Frank as he was too busy and would have to go through too many people who would stop Larry before he ever got to Frank. However, Larry finally got the information to get in touch with Frank's management office and then to Frank.

It turned out that Frank was coached for voice work by the great voice actor Paul Frees. Frank also collected recordings of some of the great actors reading books, such as James Mason and Charles Laughton, listening carefully to them, so as to perfect his narrating technique. Thusly Frank told Larry that he was very much interested in doing his first audio-book with us.

In his live concerts, Frank Sinatra Jr is known for his great story telling on stage, so it was an easy jump for him to do the narration for a story. Larry asked him why he waited so long to do an audio-book. Frank said, "This project is a 'story well told', so I decided to do it."

Frank requested his recording be done at night as that is when most singers feel their voice is the best. He gave a concentrated performance, only taking one break during the three hours as he wanted to stay 'in character'. On my other audio-novel I had Rod Taylor (The Time Machine, The Birds) do one take on his narration. Basically a continuous read unless he was unsure of a line, then he'd ask a question.

Frank however, wanted to read a one minute section of the text and then do two more takes of that same section, so I'd have a choice when it came to editing. After we finished he said, "Most of the best takes will be the third take." And with a couple of exceptions that turned out to be true when I got to the editing the next day.

Frank found a few places where he asked if he could change the words, as I wrote the text I encouraged him to do so. All his additions were great. For example, there is a line that read, "The hit man was dead before his 200 pound body crashed to the floor." Mr. Sinatra changed it to: "The hit man was dead before his 200 pounds crashed to the floor." When I heard that, I was overjoyed that this subtle, but powerful change had happened.

"Okay fellas," Frank said to Larry and I in the control room, "I'll read it as written so that you'll have a choice." But we knew right then which reading we would use. This happened a few other times as well. Larry and I were in awe of his annunciation and how he sometimes ended a paragraph in an upward tone, leaving it hanging as if more will come. We didn't know what that's called, but we loved it.

During our breaks, he talked to us about the sets that he visited of some of the now classic movies, such as Journey to the Center of the Earth and Them.

After hearing the final test product with sound effects and music. Frank said he had some additional ideas and worked with Larry and I for three more nights adding a lot more effects and music. The end result was so much more powerful. Frank has the Music Supervision credit on the project.

The McKnight's Memory cast includes Robert Culp, Nancy Kwan, David Hedison, Henry Silva, Don Stroud, Barbara Leigh, Alan Young, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, Gary Lockwood, and others. Produced by Larry Metzger. Directed by Paul Kyriazi.
