The Super Horse

If there was a horse that could swim faster than he could run, then you could take him to the beach and ride him in the surf.

There was a big horse, who was shiny and black, with a jet-black mane. This horse loved to rescue people and wanted to join the lifeguards.

The lifeguards wanted this horse as a rescue horse. He could run on the sand yet could swim faster than he could run.

If you were swimming and saw a shark, the shark would never catch you, with the horse of course.

There was a shark, and of course, the horse was not scared for obvious reasons, and the horse ran on the sand and swam out to a boy and rescued him from the shark. He was a super horse. WHAT A HORSE!

Review of The Gumbeaux Sistahs by Jax Frey

Welcome to the book blast for The Gumbeaux Sistahs by Jax Frey! I have an excerpt for you to enjoy today, plus I'll let you know my thoughts and opinions on it. If you follow the tour, you'll get to read even more excerpts and reviews. Be sure to let Jax know what you think along the way and then enter the giveaway!

The Gumbeaux Sistahs

Five Southern women wage a hilarious war against the ageism problems of one of their deep-in-trouble sisters using their improbable friendships, evil-genius schemes, oh-so-numerous cocktails, and a shared passion for good gumbo.

When southern artist, Judith Lafferty, loses her long-time, prestigious museum job to a much younger man, she finds herself devastated, alone in her sixties, and on the brink of financial disaster. Enter the incomparable Gumbeaux Sistahs, who deliver day-old coffee to her front door as a ploy, then go on to kidnap her, feed her excellent gumbo, and come up with outrageous solutions to her problems. Their motives are just good excuses to drink wine, have a great time, argue over whose mother makes the best gumbo, and, most of all, help a sister out. Ageism, dangerous boyfriends, deep loneliness, and any other challenges that can face the over fifty crowd don't stand a chance against these five resourceful ladies. The Gumbeaux Sistahs is a heart-warming, smart story of friendship and unexpected shenanigans that you do not want to miss.

Read an excerpt:
“While he talked, he kept slamming his fist against the countertops. He threw things like the salt and pepper shakers and the tea kettle across the room, and slammed a couple of open drawers shut. Each slam sounded like a gunshot to me. He went on and on. Luke always did like the sound of his own voice. I sat there waiting for the first punch, the first shove, the first something. I remember thinking that I knew he wouldn’t stop this time. I knew Luke was getting ready to kill me. I waited for the end. And I know this sounds crazy, but I remember that I was thinking that poor Bea was going to come home to a horrible mess in her house. Isn’t that the craziest thing?”

“You’re a kind person. It doesn’t surprise me a bit, honestly. Did he hurt you badly, Helen?”

“No,” she said, simply, “Bea killed him.”

**My thoughts**
I love these women, every single one of them. They are the kind of women I aspire to be now, even in my 40s, let alone when I am in my 60s. That fierce sense of loyalty and friendship and desire to boost each other up in the face of adversity is the kind of clan every woman needs in her life, even if she doesn't realize it. As we go through the book as they are trying to get revenge for Judith's firing, we see how each woman came to be the strong woman she is today and how she realized that these other women were exactly what she was looking for, even if she didn't know it.

This book reminded me of classics like Fried Green Tomatoes, Steel Magnolias, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and so many more. And just like those books, I could see this one unfolding on the big screen as well.

You'll fall in love with their quirkiness. You'll want to go down to visit them. And you're going to get really hungry, craving some gumbo. Lots of fun! And I'm hoping we see these ladies again!

Review of 'Adding Lib' and Author Kathryn Elliott on Real-Life Dementia

Hi Andi and thanks for hosting!

I think the best way to start is with dreaded backstory. (I hate prologues as much as the next gal, but in this case I’ll toss the ‘show don’t tell’ wisdom out the window and go for it!)

With each book club I visit, with each lecture to the dementia and Alzheimer’s community, I inevitably get the same question: “Is Adding Lib autobiographical?” No, Adding Lib is fiction, plain and simple. The story centers on Libby O’Rourke’s relationship with her mother, Mae McGinn and the struggles that accompany her early dementia diagnosis. However, my grandfather Jack’s battle with Alzheimer’s planted the seed for the story, and through my work with the American Alzheimer’s Association and the Brain Injury Association of Connecticut, Adding Lib took shape.

Dementia isn’t something to joke about. But in my family, we do; often.

Now don’t assume we’re an insensitive group of heartless tools – although, we are Yankees fans so there’s an element there, however we do know firsthand the healing power of laughter, especially when the brightest of minds falls under the shadow of Alzheimer’s.

My grandfather, Jack, was the first officially diagnosed in our family, however there’s evidence the disease extended back to his parents and beyond. We’re Irish, the odd behaviors and forgetfulness were easy to chalk up to scotch, but in truth the problem was deeper and the symptoms more menacing than booze could explain.

It was the little things at first, the 700th telling of the same story, switching up names of family and friends – nothing alarming, all symptoms synonymous with the joy that is aging. God willing, we’ll all get there someday. But once Jack’s behavior progressed to more unsettling patterns, reality set in and a very proud and accomplished man began disappearing by inches.

A decorated Navy veteran, Jack was the pillar of dignity, and nothing shatters a man of pride faster than a loss of independence - a car accident was the catalyst.

Not major, no injuries, but with the loss of ignition keys came a loss of self-worth and an increased amount of time under the watchful eye of family. It was then the true depth of his illness became apparent, and with symptoms impossible to mask under twenty-four hour supervision, the ugly face of Alzheimer’s made itself known – and feared.

Fear is consuming; it eats up everything in its path and often families affected by dementia feel guilty embracing the joys and smiles of life in the midst of the uncertainty and emotional pain. Through countless interviews with dementia patients and their families, as well as my own experiences, one thing became undeniably clear before the first words of Adding Lib came to life on the page – laughter heals.

Laughter vanishes when any type of dementia diagnosis is handed down. But its warm tones are familiar, comforting to those battling the disease as well as those who love them struggling with what to say and do to lessen the mounting fear.

Adding Lib is the first in the McGinn series and a true labor of love. Its humor and heartstrings approach was crafted in hopes the relatable characters and honest dialogue resonates with the dementia community, and all those who appreciate the healing power of laughter.

Thank you!

Adding Lib

BLURB:

Libby O'Rourke has a short fuse. Her mother, Mae, carries a big match. Engulfed in the never-ending life-juggling of suburbia, Libby fails to notice Mae's emerging dementia symptoms until a kitchen fire puts the problem on the front burner.

Proficient in the art of denial, Mae brushes the shattering diagnosis aside and sets her sights on a matchmaking crusade for her eldest son. After all, if her lucid days are numbered, Mae’s going to make damned sure he makes it down the aisle while she still recognizes the groom.

It’s going to take a razor wit and an iron stomach to handle Mae's diagnosis. Thankfully, just like her mother Libby has both.

Read an excerpt:
Libby felt the weight of the coming conversation bear down on her shoulders like a lead blanket and struggled to find the right words.

“It’s all right, Libby,” Mae said, interrupting her thoughts. “Say what you need to. We’re here for a reason. We both know it.”

Shocked by her mother’s perception, Libby stared at Mae.

The older woman’s eyes were moist but holding back. She continued. “Spit it out, honey. I won’t have a public tantrum. It’s obvious you have something important to talk to me about, and I think you’ve delayed long enough.”

Libby’s shoulders slumped. “How’d you know?”

“Well, let’s examine the facts...” Mae grinned despite the gravity of the moment. “You took me to church, plied me with brunch, and now you’re standing there biting your bottom lip raw. Daddy used to call that your tell. We always knew something was wrong if your bottom lip looked like it had a run-in with a cheese grater.”

“Huh?” Libby ran her tongue over her bottom lip. “I never noticed.”

“In your teens, we were pretty sure you were going to bite clean through it,” Mae joked. “At least your nervous habit isn’t offensive; whenever Kevin lies, he grabs his testicles. Since the day he was born that boy treated his penis like an accessory. It’s terribly inappropriate, especially at parties.”

**My thoughts**

I loved this book. I needed this book. Alzheimer's and dementia are serious issues, but a sense of humor is always such a breath of fresh air. My mother has Alzheimer's. We took her problems quite seriously, but always had to look at situations with a sense of humor. If you don't, you could very well go mad.

Libby and her husband have an amazing relationship. They understand each other and work well together. Family support is crucial when going through these hardships. She also has an amazing strength about her, which keeps her going, but isn't afraid to let people know when she needs help.

I loved her banter with her brothers. Siblings are another essential support system when dealing with a failing parent. Kevin, Sean, and Libby obviously love each other very much. I only have one sister, but know that I depended on her immensely as we dealt with our parents.

Mae is an amazing woman. She is crass, mouthy, and outspoken, and I love her for it. She is terrified as her sentence is imposed, which is quite understandable. Yet, she is determined to fight with whatever she has left, even as she is in denial. She would embarrass the hell out of me, but I would be proud to call her my mother.

Anyone who has ever been down the dementia road with a parent should be able to relate to this story. We have all been through a kitchen fire, or a similar version of it. We have had to confront our parents about their mental failing. We have had those arguments and felt all of those frustrations. I really felt like I was reading about my own story in a parallel universe.

This was one of those books that made me feel all kinds of emotions. I found myself laughing out loud. I found myself crying. I savored every page and the journey on which it took me. I am impressed that this is the author's debut novel.

In addition to the dementia part of the story are revelations of family history and secrets that helped to shape their current relationships. Romances are brewing in more than one generation. There are so many stories yet to be told in this family and I can't wait to read more about their journey.

Check out a deleted scene from 'Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem' by D.E. Haggerty

A Deleted Scene
Murder, Mystery & Dating Mayhem

by D.E. Haggerty

I barge into the police station at full speed nearly running into the desk. “Where are my old ladies?” I ask in between gasps. The sergeant behind the desk raises an eyebrow at me but doesn’t say anything.

Jack almost crashes into me from behind. “Man you’re fast,” he pants. “Where are they?” He asks as his eyes search the area.

I shrug and point to the desk sergeant. She stares at us but doesn’t respond. “Ma’am? We’re here to bail out our friends?”

“Bail out?” Ah, it speaks.

“Yeah,” I nod. Isn’t that what you do when someone gets picked up by the police? Fortunately, I’m not an expert.

“We don’t do that here,” she finally says after a long silence.

“Oh, um, can we see them?”

The woman sighs. “I don’t even know who you’re talking about.”

I tilt my head at her confused. I’m sure I saw a police car with the quirky quintet in it. I take a deep breath and rattle off the names of the ladies. “I saw them in a police car coming this way.”

“Have a seat” is her only response.

I look at Jack and raise my eyebrows but he just shrugs. We move to the plastic chairs set against the wall and sit down. Only a few minutes pass before Noel comes out. He swaggers towards us with a huge grin on his face. I collapse in relief against Jack. Noel grabs my hand and pulls me out of the seat. He gives me a hard closed mouth kiss and then rests his forehead against mine. “Those ladies are beyond crazy,” he whispers.

“You’re telling us.” I can practically hear Jack roll his eyes as he responds.

“Please tell me you didn’t arrest them.” I whisper to Noel. He chuckles as he pulls away from me. “Come see for yourself.”

I look at Jack but he just shrugs in response. He stands and we follow Noel to an interrogation room. The ladies are sitting around the table gabbing away looking for all the world as if they’re having a coffee klatch. They don’t even notice us arrive. I clear my throat and wait.

“Oh hi Izzy,” Betty says and then turns to Ally who is sitting next to her. “And did you see the blonde one? I tried to pinch his bottom but he ran away.”

I feel my face heat as I turn to Noel. “What exactly happened?”

Noel leans against the wall and crosses his arms across his chest. He’s back into detective mode. “These ladies decided to check out the mining company. They were demanding to see the CEO and harassing the poor receptionist. Security came and tried to get them to leave but of course they wouldn’t.”

“We had every right to be there,” Betty butts in. The other ladies nod and grunt their agreement.

Noel shakes his head but doesn’t contradict them. “The police were called and they were asked to leave.”

“It doesn’t sound like they did anything bad enough to have them hauled to the police station.” I say and cross my arms, worried that my old lady gang is being targeted because of their relationship with me.

Noel looks at me quickly before turning to the ladies. “Didn’t they?” He raises an eyebrow at them.

The ladies look down at their hands and squirm in their seats. “Oh god, what did they do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Ally whispers.

“Shush,” Betty says, but Martha speaks anyway. “It’s not our fault. They were just so scrumptious.”

Noel shakes his head and looks to me. “According to the two arresting officers, they were sexually harassed.”

The ladies harrumph. “Everything is sexual harassment these days. Look at us. How could we ever harass anyone.” Betty now looks the picture of innocent. Yeah right.

Jack grabs a seat. “Which officers are we talking about? What did they look like?”

I sigh and bang me head against the wall. Why me? Noel grabs me and pulls me out of the room. He leans his forehead and against mine and whispers. “It’s okay. They’re not under arrest. The officers just thought they’d teach the lady crew a lesson.” He shakes his head. “They have no clue.”

I smile and give Noel a quick kiss. “So I can take them home?”

“Yeah, baby,” he sighs. “Please get them out of here.”

Blurb:

My name is Izzy. I drink too much, am clumsier than a newborn foal, and my brain-to-mouth filter often malfunctions. My daredevil husband killed himself in a parachuting accident five years ago and my best friend Jack has decided it’s time I jump back in the dating pool. He’s perfectly happy to throw me in if I don’t listen. Just when things in the dating world start to heat up, my grandma dies. Only her knitting group of Jessica Fletcher wannabes is sure it’s murder. I’m not convinced but I’m always up for a bit of excitement as long as it doesn’t lead to a night in jail. Well, more than one night anyway. Will I miss my chance at love because I’m chasing imaginary killers? Did someone really kill grandma or am I and my merry band of geriatric thieves imagining things?

Read an excerpt:
“Excuse me,” I say as I try to catch the bartender’s attention. The bartender, however, is more interested in the young girls prancing around than in me. I sigh and lean onto the bar ensuring that the girls are visible. “Excuse me,” I say again, but this time I use a sultry voice – or at least that’s what I’m going for. The bartender finally looks my way and I smile when I see his eyes immediately lured to my cleavage. Gotcha! “Tequila shot with a beer chaser, please.” He jumps to fulfill my order, but nearly trips as he attempts to maintain eye contact with my bosom and reach for the tequila bottle at the same time.

I hear someone chuckle beside me and turn to see a hotter than hot piece of male specimen staring at me. I immediately feel my face burn. The bartender saves me by slamming my drinks down in front of me. I grab the tequila shot and quickly down it before latching onto the beer to soothe my burning esophagus. Good thing I have lots of practice or I would probably spit the beer out like a college freshman during rush week, although I may have coughed just a teensy bit.
Sufficiently fortified, I turn to the man again and notice him watching me. He raises an eyebrow. “I tried that trick earlier,” he says, tilting his head towards the bar, “but the bartender didn’t seem impressed with my assets.” I look him up and down. “You look pretty hot to me,” I say and then slap my hand over my mouth when I realize my comment probably sounded like some lame pick-up line. “Sorry.” Is it possible for my face to spontaneously burst into flames? “Sometimes my mouth opens before my brain can stop it.”

The man laughs and shakes his head. He reaches out to shake my hand just as a loud, obnoxious bell rings. “That’s my cue,” I say as I jump off the barstool. I wobble a bit, and hottie reaches out to steady me with his hand on my elbow. I gasp as a current of pure electricity moves through my arm. I startle and nearly trip in my heels.

I manage to steady myself and smile at Mr. Dreamboat before going off to search for Jack. Before I can find him, I catch sight of another cocktail waitress. I grab a glass of red before locating Jack, who is surrounded by women who are obviously on the prowl. To the casual observer, he seems to be reveling in the attention, but I see his eyes frantically search the room before landing on me. I immediately stalk forward, grab his hand, and pull him away.

About D.E. Haggerty

I was born and raised in Wisconsin, but think I’m a European. After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. My flying Dutch husband and I have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany and now Istanbul. We still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. Although I’ve been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, I think with writing I may have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. That’s assuming I ever grow up, of course. Between tennis, running, traveling, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my fifth book.

Advice for writers from Mark Speed, author of 'Doctor How and the Illegal Aliens'

Advice for writers

When I was twenty-one had a crummy telesales job (I quit on day three – went out for cigarettes and never came back). One of the guys was an actor in his fifties. He asked me what I really wanted to do with my life. “Writer,” I said, without hesitation. “How much are you writing every day?” he asked. “Uhh. I’m not working on anything at the moment,” I admitted. “Then you’ll never be a writer.” He was absolutely right. Like anything in life, if you want it you have to go out and grab it. It takes years of work, and the sooner you start then the sooner you will reach your goals. And you have to make sacrifices – nothing is for free.

The only way to get writing is to have the discipline to sit yourself down to do it. You must plan ahead. I have little sympathy for those who are struck by writer’s block. If you’re blocked, it’s because you haven’t sat down and planned your story properly. It’s either that or your story isn’t believable or compelling to your conscious mind, so your subconscious mind has given up working on it. I faced that a few years ago with a novel when I was some 30,000 words into it. I realised that I simply didn’t believe in the characters at a subconscious level. They would have worked well as protagonists in an early Iain Banks novel, but they didn’t sit well in what purported to be a more realistic world. I feel terrible about having left those characters stranded in that story, but until my subconscious works something out then they remain preserved in aspic.

As with just about anything, the secret is to form good habits and to never let excuses get in the way. This is something I learnt from running. I schedule time for myself to sit down for a set number of hours with no distractions and just a blank page. I sit and plan the story. It is the hardest part of writing. Once you have the story, all you have to do is to write it down. Never make the excuse that you’re too tired, or having nothing to write. Some of my best writing days have been when I thought I was exhausted, both physically and creatively.

So I have three pieces of advice. Number one is to get writing. If you’re not writing that novel now, when the hell are you going to start? Number two is to plan ahead – know what you’re going to write. Know what your beginning, middle and end are. It helps to park the car pointing downhill at the end of your writing day – i.e. to know what your next paragraph will be, so you can get an immediate bump-start. Number three is to get strong and believable characters. Strong characters will show you how they complete that journey, and take you along for the ride. Weak characters simply can’t carry you.

Dr. How and the Illegal Aliens
by Mark Speed

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Doctor How’s famous megalomaniac brother Doctor Who sold his fictional life story to the BBC half a century ago, painting himself as a lone hero. Disillusioned, their four cousins dropped out. For fifty years, Doctor How has held the line against the forces of darkness and stupidity. And he’s not that happy, since you ask.
Illegal aliens try to hack How’s Spectrel (TARDIS is a very rude word where he comes from), just as he suspects his estranged cousin Where has been compromised. When reports come in of mysterious attacks by alien creatures, Doctor How has to rely on his new companion Kevin, a petty criminal from south London, and Trinity, a morphing super-predator, as he counters this threat to humanity’s existence. Bungling agents from MI16, long desperate to capture the Time Keeper’s technology, hamper How’s efforts to combat the alien menace. Can Doctor How keep ahead of MI16, save Where and combat the alien threat?
Read an excerpt:
There was a red telephone box on the pavement outside. The light inside was bright – so bright that Kevin couldn’t see in – and yet the light didn’t illuminate the area immediately around it. Even the black letters of the backlit TELEPHONE sign were indistinct due to the brightness of the light behind them. The obtrusiveness of the light made it difficult to see what was beyond it. As he walked slowly past Where’s black cab, he noticed that the telephone box was not reflected in its windows or polished paintwork. Thoughts of vampires crept through his imagination.
“Doctor?” he called.
“What now? Can’t you see I’m busy?”
“Well, no.”
Once he’d skirted around the phone box, Kevin could see that the Doctor was somewhat stretched. He was standing on the bonnet of the cab, with the tip of one finger on its badge and the other touching the crown symbol above the TELEPHONE sign, which was at the very limit of his reach.
“It’d be a lot easier and faster if I could put my whole hand on both of them,” he said.
“What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing, lad?”
“Um. Is it kinda like when you have to jump-start a car with another one?”
“Yes, it’s kinda like that,” the Doctor panted. “And before you point it out in your own wonderfully literal way, yes: I’m kinda like a time-travelling breakdown recovery service.” He paused to catch his breath again, and winced. “And I can tell you it’s not particularly pleasant being the wiring. Thankfully, Where’s Spectrel should shortly recover enough to be able to take a transdimensional feed off mine. Ouch!”
'Even Hippies Get the Blues' by Michel Lee King
Title: Even Hippies Get The Blues
Author: Michel Lee King
Official Release Date: February 21, 2014
202 Pages
Humorous Romance/Literary Humor
Target Audience: Adult Women, New Adult
Blurb:
“Sometimes peace can only come through chaos.”
Amy thought she had it all together. Her goals were set and she was working toward them seamlessly while practicing her peace-loving philosophy.
Her world of blissful ignorance crumbles when Travis, a blond paramedic with a body that can stop a truck, waltzes in to open her eyes... Just after Murphy, and his pesky law, paint a target on her back.
How many times can a waitress be interrogated in one day? Just how much orange acrylic paint can get caught in dreads before an interview? How does one retain their composure while dripping paint nude in their living room and staring down a trespassing police officer?
Read an excerpt:
Laying in my womb-like chrysalis, I returned the phone call. On the third ring, my best friend answered. “Hey Amy. How’s it going? Why didn’t you answer?”
I started laughing hysterically at the situation. “I’ve been taken hostage by my sheets and they won’t let me go.”
A long pause followed my announcement. Finally I heard a soft chuckle. “Should I call the police? Or search and rescue?”
“Both,” I snorted mid laugh.
Her chuckle intensified. “Oh my god, you’re serious aren’t you?”
“Yes. I’m lying here, on the floor, wrapped up like some sunshine burrito, and I can’t get out.”
I had to hold the phone away from my head because she was laughing so hard. “Why are you laughing at a time like this? My dignity is at stake!”
Rustling met my wheezed outburst before the line went dead. Staring up at the stained ceiling, I gave in to the hilarity of my plight. Who else could get themselves this stuck in cotton?
Calmed somewhat, and out of breath, I gave the sheets an honest fight. Sadly, they were winning. Sweating, and only slightly less trapped, I inched my way into the kitchen where the aromatic wonder that was my customary French roast tempted my bruised ego.
Review of 'Trippin' Holidays' by Emily Walker
Blurb from Amazon:
The Holidays bring Colleen an unexpected high. Trippin Holidays is a heart-warming tale of accidental drug use.
**My thoughts**
I downloaded this short story for free on Amazon, on the recommendation of some friends. Short stories are not my favorite, as I often feel unfulfilled. I prefer longer reads.  The end of this one definitely had me wanting to know what happened next!
This short story had me chuckling. Her descriptions of getting dressed in an uncomfortable outfit and killer stilettos to go out on a winter night are hilarious. So are her exploits once she gets to the club and is under the influence.
I have a hard time believing Colleen would actually think that dots were chocolate, let alone accept them from someone she doesn't even know. She comments about how gross the guy is, as well as the surroundings. She does say that she is a chocoholic, and stranger things have happened.
It was amusing for a quick and free read.
