The walk to the manor was different, the raw rush of adrenaline fading to exhaustion. The woods felt darker, the path harder to navigate. There was a faint rustle of movement around her, the trees themselves whispering a warning. Her heart quickened, and she started to run, branches whipping her face and tearing at her dress.A voice drifted through the darkness, “Charlotte?”
It had almost a melodic lilt.
“Where are you, sweetheart?” Was it? It couldn’t be.
“It’s so dark, come find me.” Mother.
Each repetition grew sharper, impatient, closing the distance.
“Charlotte, wait for me, please…”
Stopping was not an option, not now. The path itself was near impossible to follow; so easy to lose in the gloom.
“I can see you,” the voice of her mother told her from the bushes next to her.
Spine tingling, Lottie broke into a full sprint. Despite not hearing it in so long, there was no mistaking it.
From behind her, “Lottie!”
A tug on her dress, but she dared not turn.
She couldn’t.
By some mercy, the woods fell away and the manor appeared—her sanctuary and her prison. Stumbling through the back door, she slammed it behind her. The kitchen loomed around her, pitch-black and oppressive. Harold had snuffed out every light.
Craning her neck, she peeked through the small window in the heavy door. There, her mother’s decayed face would be looking in at her from the night.
It was empty. Her fingers shook so hard she missed the lock the first time.
