Lady Deception by Bobbi Smith

If you like western historical romances, enjoy this excerpt from Lady Deception by Bobbi Smith. Follow the rest of the tour for even more. And then best of luck in the giveaway!

Hi Everybody!

Lady Deception was the first book in my “Women Who Were Ahead of Their Times” series. All my books with Lady in the title are in this series. They feature strong heroines who are inspiring and great role models. I hope you enjoy Cody’s story. Best, Bobbi Smith

Lady Deception

The Lady

Cody Jameson—the name sent chills down the spines of every sidewinder west of the Pecos. A master of disguise, a genius of deceit, the infamous bounty hunter always had the advantage over any prey: No desperado knew Cody’s real identity—or even suspected that the tracker stalking him was a fiery beauty.

The Deception

The first time Cody caught sight of Luke Majors, she was dressed as a lady preacher. But nothing could conceal the way the gunman thrilled her. Still, it wasn’t Luke’s body or soul Cody was after—it was the price on his head. And she was sure to collect the reward, if only she could convince herself a fistful of dollars was worth more than a lifetime of passion.

Read an excerpt:
Luke had time to think as he rode with Cody, and he wasn’t happy about it. Memories of the time he’d spent with her disguised as Sister Mary taunted him. He’d been protecting her, and all the while she’d been trying to take him in for the reward they were offering on him for the bank robbery! He silently laughed at how completely he’d been fooled by her act. Cody had gone to El Trajar to catch him, not to save any souls.

Luke recalled how he’d thought Sister Mary was everything a woman was supposed to be—honest and forthright, gentle and caring. He’d thought she was a complete innocent. He’d been wrong. Cody had used every trick in the book to bring him in. Disguised as Armita, she’d even used her body!

He immediately stopped at that thought. There had been no mistaking her untouched state. Memories of their lovemaking made him wonder anew just what kind of woman Cody Jameson really was. Was she a saint or sinner? A deceitful woman or a clever bounty hunter?

Luke tried to imagine that her response to his lovemaking had been an act, but he knew instinctively that wasn’t true. She’d wanted him as much as he’d wanted her.

But not anymore.

Cody Jameson had caught him. She was taking him in to collect her reward, and then she was going to go on to her next conquest. He’d been a job to her. Nothing more.

His mood was black. The only good thing he had to cling to was his knowledge that all the time he’d spent undercover with the outlaw gang hadn’t been for nothing. He had learned that El Diablo, the leader of the gang, was a woman. When they got back to town, he would contact Jack and let him know.

With Stalking Ghost taking the lead, Cody kept an eye on Luke. When they stopped for the night, she noticed how he seemed to be in pain from his shoulder wound as he dismounted.

“Are you all right?” she asked.

“I’m worth the same to you, dead or alive. So it really doesn’t matter. You’ll get your money.” He turned his back to her.

Cody’s heart ached. She wished she could change the way things had turned out, but she’d given her word to Jack Logan that she would bring him in.

Ropin' the Moon by Deborah Camp

Welcome to the book blast for Ropin' the Moon by Deborah Camp! This one is for lovers of historical romance, particularly Western romances. I have an excerpt for you to enjoy. Then there are more excerpts and some book reviews along the book tour. Leave Deborah your thoughts and questions in the comments section. And of course, be sure to enter the giveaway!

Ropin' the Moon

He had tumbleweed in his blood, moving from one town to the next. Traveling to where there was trouble, Dalton Moon was hired to tame wild places with a fast draw and an iron will. Lacy Tyrell knew that Dalton wouldn’t be around long and she shouldn’t be tempted by him. But like the moon, his pull on her was a natural, powerful force that she was helpless to resist.

Read an excerpt:
“Let’s not play games with each other, Lacy.”

“I’m not.” She glared at his hand holding her prisoner and he loosened his hold, but didn’t release her.

“You are. You’re used to winding men around your little finger, slaying them with your smile, and having them trot after you like Thumper trots after me.”

“That’s an interesting image you’ve dreamed up, Marshal, but you know absolutely nothing about me.”

“That’s true.” His tone was hushed, soft as a feather. “But I’d like to know you. Very much.” He let her go; his fingertips trailing down her dress sleeve.

Mesmerized by his lips forming the words, she didn’t move. The flash of his teeth against his lower lip when he’d said “very” and the attractive pucker of them when he’d said “much” held her prisoner. She wanted to know the feel of his mouth on hers. Very. Much. Without allowing herself another second to reconsider, she rested a hand on his solid chest to steady herself and rose on tiptoes. She laid her mouth against his in a quick, hard kiss. She heard the quick intake of his breath, felt his lips part in surprise, and his heart kick against her palm.

'The Man (A Grady Lind Western)' by Gerald Hartenhoff

Blurb:

Due to the time of day, there weren’t a lot of people inside, but the ones that were there all had their eyes glued Grady Lind as he walked through the door.

The women couldn’t take their eyes off of him because he was so big and strikingly handsome. The men, on the other hand, viewed him a little differently. He made them all feel inferior due to his massive size and bulk. The tied down six-shooters, one on each leg, also made them afraid. It was obvious to the men; by the way he carried himself, that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Bio:

Gerald lives on a farm with his wife and two children. Living on the farm with them are horses, sheep, dogs, cats, chickens and a donkey. Gerald also enjoys reading and writing westerns.

Read an excerpt from 'The Rancher Takes a Wife (Montana Brides #1)' by Leslea Tash

Title: The Rancher Takes a Wife
Series: Montana Brides #1
Author: Leslea Tash
Publication Date: May 2, 2014

Summary:

Chastity Lilly is no flapper. In 1920s New York, she's determined to find a career as a teacher so she can support her family upstate. But one thing leads to another, and the company she keeps in the big city leads her down a very different path than the one she sought.

When she helps a handsome rancher in town looking for his own errant sister, can she turn her act around? Will she take his offer of a teaching position in Wedlock, Montana and make a brand new start? And if she does, can she--and the rancher--leave the past behind to forge a new future together?

Not if the rancher's sister has her way.

This is a sweet historical Western romance. There are no PG-13 or R-rated scenes.

Read an excerpt:
“I’ve embarrassed you again,” he said quietly. He stopped and turned to face me. “Please forgive me. In Montana I’m used to dodging cow piles, but since I’ve met you I seem to have a gift for stepping right in ‘em!”

I laughed. “You’re funny, Mr. Ward. Please stop asking my forgiveness. I’m afraid we’ll be forever locked in a battle of who can be the most polite!” It was his turn to laugh. His wide smile and perfect teeth went a long ways toward smoothing things over.

“I’ve got an idea,” I said. “Let’s go to the police station together. We can inquire about my friend and about your sister there.”

He nodded. “Excellent idea. I’ve visited as many stations as I could since I got to town, but there’s one on Broadway I’ve yet to see. Shall we?”

The traffic on Broadway was thick, but faster moving than Wall Street. After a few blocks, Mr. Ward gestured to a police station on the opposite side of the street. “It’s just this way,” he said, and then he did the unthinkable, stepping out into the street without looking.

I pulled him back onto the sidewalk so hard, he lost his balance and toppled on top of me.

“So sorry!” he said as he fell, but it was too late. In a moment, I was out of breath, Mr. Ward’s chest atop mine, our bodies entangled as he wrapped his arms around me, trying to break my fall.

Although Henry had begged me until I submitted to some kissing, I’d never felt my flesh come alive with heat and desire like it did for the handsome cowboy atop me now. I knew I should have been mortified, but all I could do was stare up into his eyes, praying he would kiss me. Praying he wouldn’t feel the heat that seemed to radiate from my secret places at the thought of his lips on mine.

He looked equally stunned, and he seemed to be struggling both to right himself, as well as to stay atop me.

“Get a room!” a man huffed, stepping around us on the crowded pavement.

It was scandalous, indeed, but Mr. Ward and I both erupted into laughter. Sometimes you must laugh to keep from crying, I’d come to learn.

But the laughter wouldn’t last long. As Mr. Ward helped me to my feet, something in a nearby alley caught his eye.

Not something. Someone.

EXCERPT
Connor followed her up the narrow steps to her place, carrying her small bag, and set it down on the floor inside.
“You going to be okay here tonight?”
She slipped off her coat and hung it on a nearby hook. Grace wanted to be alone but didn’t want him to leave. Her heart told her to walk up to him, lace her arms around his neck, and ask him to stay. She shouldn’t. She was still married and it would be wrong, even if her marriage was a mockery. She planned to obtain a divorce, which was simple to do in Utah. The laws were lenient and divorce common with people coming from other states to take advantage of the quick dissolution procedures. She simply hadn’t had time to do it with work and planning how she was going to free Meggie.
Grace walked to a window and stared at the dark sky, deciding what to do. She needed to tell him about Moser but the words wouldn’t form. Say something tonight, or let him leave—she was conflicted. She continued to look out when she sensed him walk up behind her, felt his strong arms wrap around her waist, and draw her flush against his chest.
He pulled loose strands of hair away from her neck, bending to place kisses up to the tender spot behind her ear. “Ask me to stay,” he whispered before tugging a sensitive earlobe with his lips. She sagged against him, letting her head fall back against his chest and giving him access to the soft column of her neck.

photo shirleenProfile1_zps1c6a38a4.jpgI have been writing most of my life, but only recently began the transition into fiction. Historical romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and short stories are what keep me reading, so that is the focus of my writing.

I was born in California, grew up between a growing beach town and a small town at the base of the San Bernardino mountains. My mother originally planned to name me Katherine, but she read an article in the paper about a woman named Shirleen shortly before my birth, so instead of having a cool nickname, like Kate, I am simply Shirleen. My mainstays growing up were all the Nancy Drew mystery books; I loved them. Eventually I moved on to mysteries, suspense stories, crime novels, and romance. Pride and Prejudice will always be one of my favorites.

Besides California, life changes have allowed me to live in Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona. Everywhere I have lived has been inspirational in one way or another, giving me the opportunity to meet remarkable people with their own stories to tell. I've sailed, skied, owned horses plus lots of other animals, and ridden various off-road vehicles. I enjoy dancing, fishing, hunting, being the back-seater on my husband's Harley, traveling and, of course, reading and writing.

Prior to transitioning to writing fiction, I worked for Fortune 500 and many smaller, start-up companies. Fortunately, I regained my sanity long enough to start my own consulting firm, which I still maintain today.

My husband and I spend most of our time at our main home in the mountains of Arizona and our second home in Southern California. Between us we have five boys with growing careers and families of their own. So, from my perspective, my life is a success and always an adventure. EXCERPT

Colorado Mountains, 1880
The blade slicing his throat made no sound, but the dead body hitting the ground did. With no time to stop, he hurried through the dark tunnel until he reached the ladder leading out of the shaft.
He’d been two hundred feet below ground for ten days, with no food and little water. Weak and woozy, he stared up the ladder. He’d have to climb it and it wasn’t going to be easy. He wiped the bloody blade on his torn pants and placed it between his teeth. Scraped knuckles and unwashed hands gripped the wooden rung.

The earth swayed. He closed his eyes and forced the spinning in his head to cease. One thin bronzed leg lifted and came down wobbly. He waited until his leg stopped shaking before he climbed another rung. Each step caused pain, but was paired with determination. He made it to the top faster than he’d thought he would. The sky was black and the air was cool, but fresh. Thank goodness it was fresh.
He took two long breaths before he emerged from the hole. The smell from below ground still lingered in his nostrils; unwashed bodies, feces and mangy rats. His stomach pitched. He tugged at the rope around his hands. There had been no time to chew the thick bands around his wrists when he’d planned his escape. It was better to run than crawl, and he chewed through the strips that bound his feet instead. There would be time to free his wrists later.
He pressed his body against the mountain and inched toward the shack. He frowned. A guard stood at the entrance to where they were. The blade from the knife pinched his lip, cutting the thin skin and he tasted blood. He needed to get in there. He needed to say goodbye. He needed to make a promise.

The tower bell rang mercilessly. There was no time left. He pushed away from the rocky wall, dropped the knife from his mouth into his bound hands, aimed and threw it. The dagger dug into the man’s chest. He ran over, pulled the blade from the guard and quickly slid it across his throat. The guard bled out in seconds.

He tapped the barred window on the north side of the dilapidated shack. The time seemed to stretch. He glanced at the large house not fifty yards from where he stood. He would come back, and he would kill the bastard inside.

He tapped again, harder this time, and heard the weak steps of those like him shuffling from inside. The window slid open, and a small hand slipped out.

“Toksha ake—I shall see you again,” he whispered in Lakota.
The hand squeezed his once, twice and on the third time held tight before it let go and disappeared inside the room.

A tear slipped from his dark eyes, and his hand, still on the window sill, balled into a fist. He swallowed past the sob and felt the burn in his throat. His chest ached for what he was leaving behind. He would survive, and he would return.
Men shouted to his right, and he crouched down low. He took one last look around and fled into the cover of the forest.
