**My thoughts**

I was drawn to the description of this book because Emma's son JD has autism. I spent 20 years in the classroom and had several children with autism. I also have several friends who have children with autism. So I already have a soft spot for this book before even beginning it.

The description of Emma's interactions with people at work and at JD's school rang quite true to life from what I have observed of my friends' interactions with people and some of the horror stories I remember from working in the schools. Too many people just do not understand what it is like to deal with someone with autism. So I applaud the author for bringing a lot of real to this story.

I had a hard time in the beginning with the timeline of the story. I understand doing flashbacks to reveal more about the person's past. But there was a lot of overlap even within the present time, which was rather confusing at times. For example. we would be in a chapter from Emma's point of view and she would have an interaction with Ethan. And then in the next chapter, we would go back several hours or days and read Ethan's story leading up to the point that had ended in the previous chapter. And then little bits of the storyline seemed outside the realm of realistic, even for fiction.

But then as Ethan and Emma started to get to know each other, were working on their story and screenplay, and the romance started to develop, I found myself lost in their story. I loved reading about the interactions between Emma and her son and really felt that special bond that only a mother can have with her son with autism. And then watching how Ethan was able to form a relationship with JD was also beautiful to read. That's something rare to find. I really wanted to see them succeed.

I also loved Ethan's grandmother. She is feisty and fun and the kind of person we all could use in our lives.

The only thing I really didn't like about this story was the sheer number of secrets that the two of them kept from each other, especially on Emma's side. It's too hard to have a solid foundation when you're not honest about some really big and important parts of your past. You just hope that they can literally survive as all of the truths come out.

This was a relatively easy read and kept me engrossed. It wasn't like I had to put it down and walk away from it. I applaud the author for baring her soul and putting so much of herself in the story. You can't write those kinds of interactions so authentically unless you have lived them. And while each autism story is a different one, I really felt a lot of truth in these interactions, especially due to my own interactions, as I said, as a teacher and as someone who has many friends whose children have autism. It was a different kind of romance, which was nice for a change.

**My thoughts**
Cozy mysteries can all vary in their levels of amateur silliness and sleuthing. This one takes best friends who became a couple, Zellie and Arnie, and continues their exploits as amateur private investigators. Apparently they stumbled upon solving a mystery in the first novel and then became a couple. Now they want to have an actual business, but are up against the tough set of rules required to actually get your PI license and are about to get into trouble. The action gets started when they go to check out a potential new office and a dead body literally falls on top of them.

They take it as a sign and delve deep into an investigation that makes me flash back to high school English class. It also has plenty of your cheesy silliness of characters and their reactions as the story unfolds. I felt like I figured out a good chunk of it before the characters did, but not all of it.

I did read this book without having read the first one and felt like I did do okay with the story. There are a lot of references to the back story throughout. But I do think it may help if you read the first one to better understand a lot of the story.

**My thoughts**

This is one of those kinds of collections that I have always aspired to write -- just random observations on daily life and memories of different times. I think it's something that happens to us once we reach a certain age. The author does his with a bit of humor and with a slight focus on the better words that need to be in our vocabularies. I can almost see him sitting with a Word of the Day calendar, seeing what memories and thoughts that one word can trigger. He covers childhood, observations on life today versus yesteryear, history, and so much more. I really laughed out loud at his thoughts on gardening and rolled my eyes through observations of prom today versus years ago. So many of the pieces triggered my own memories and thoughts. And I feel like I need to have a vocabulary list to practice using some of these words more frequently again.

This isn't the kind of book that you can just sit and read cover-to-cover, though perhaps some would. It's meant to digest in bites. I honestly picture it sitting on my coffee table, or even as a bathroom reader. That's not a slam, by the way. Those Uncle John's readers have always been popular with me and friends over the years as a way to be entertained when stuck sitting a little longer than usual. ;)

I also honestly think this collection would be better appreciated by those who are 30 and older. Some may speak to a younger audience, though, particularly if they have had conversations with parents and other older generations about what life was like even a decade ago. Fun read!

**My thoughts**

From the get-go, I could tell that Eleanor and McCrea had complete miscommunication between the two of them and deserved to have time to talk things through and to try to work things out. It's clear that the two of them still have a strong attraction to each other. And I rooted for them to figure it out the whole way. Mina does a good job of illustrating the extremes of feelings that go on in someone's mind when they are torn between hatred for the other person for betrayal and yet are still strongly attracted to someone, especially to who you used to be together. Jumbled up emotions take over and you feel almost crazy as you experience the various extremes.

While I am rooting for them to work it out, I am also cautioning them to take it easy. There is a lot of anger that felt like it disappeared too conveniently for me, and their daughter Sophie did play a huge role in that. And while we find out why McCrea didn't know that he had a daughter, I will say that I find it so hard to believe that so many people in a relatively small town had no idea that Eleanor had a child, even though she had moved away. She still had family there, still snuck to town for visits, and really didn't live dreadfully far away. Plus the two families go back for generations. There are a lot of buried family secrets, though, that are slowly revealed to provide some insight.

Beyond that, I did enjoy the descriptions of the ranches and the ranching lifestyle. While I never would make it living in such an environment, there is something so romantic about the idea of a ranch (in spite of the extreme hard work it takes to run one). I've been reading a lot of romances lately about being on a ranch. I love the horse rescue idea and how McCrea is trying to really do good in his life, as well as trying to show the love of his life how he can be her perfect cowboy.

Bonnie has spent the better part of 25 years as a graphic designer and artist. Always a lover of psychology and the forces that influence behavior, it was a natural transition for her to begin working to resolve her oldest son’s special education challenges. When he was six, a neuropsychologist said he was beyond help, and to plan for his group home care as an adult. Bonnie could not accept that nothing could be done, and she set on a path to find solutions to help her son. He is now an honor student and destined to live a typical life.

Having been through the special ed system as a mom, and now as a advocate and counselor, she saw the need for support for the parents who carry this challenging burden. She has helped parents who struggle with districts who refused services, and she has coached parents in finding ways help their child succeed against the odds. Bonnie knows the fear a mother feels when her child’s future is uncertain, and that is why she chose to shift her life focus into educational consulting. A failed marriage, a business in shambles, his family mad at him… he can’t seem to get back the success he once had. Then she waltzes into his life once more.

**My thoughts**

I love fast and sweet romances. I often find myself with small blocks of time in between engagements and like to have something that I can pick up to read and not have to worry about getting lost when I am interrupted and have to pick it up again later. This sweet story about Rachel and Brandon easily fit the bill.

Those first loves in high school can be difficult. Sometimes you know that you are meant to be together, but then have to have some time apart to truly appreciate what it is that you had. You're both still growing, trying to figure out who you are as a person, let alone as part of an intense relationship. Rachel had her dreams and goals in place, but wasn't really sure how to make Brandon a part of them. Brandon thought he knew was his future was, but Rachel broke his heart when she let him go.

It's easy to make a mistake in a relationship. It's not always so easy to go back to the way things were. Rachel and Brandon have both moved on in their lives, yet have never found anyone new who really completes them in the same way. When Rachel goes back home, she and Brandon end up thrust together, thanks to Rachel's conniving grandmother. They cautiously set out to see if they can rekindle what once was and turn into something new. 

As with all short romance stories, sometimes they feel a little hurried. You sometimes want to get deeper into the characters and their conflicts because you like them so much. I felt like this story resolved itself quite quickly after a 10-year hiatus. But at the same time, it did leave me with those feel-good butterflies as it worked itself out. Definitely a sweet read to keep you entertained in an afternoon. And bonus points for being a clean romance for something a little different, which I need on occasion.

Pauline Creeden

Pauline Creeden is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy. In her fiction, she creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long.

I take a glance in the small oval mirror by the door and check my smoky eye shadow, dredged in blues, greens and black, long fake lashes and my blood red lips.
