Read an exclusive excerpt from 'Gate (The Knights of Av'lor Book 2)' by Sam Rook

Gate

by Sam Rook

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Kathryn returns to Av'lor after seven months on the Daemon home world, only to discover the Daemons have invaded Earth. With Av'lor on the brink of an uprising and an unknown enemy upon its doorstep, the knights divide their forces to safeguard both worlds.
Sir Lanclor, torn between his duty to Av'lor and his dedication to Kathryn, finds himself fighting a losing battle on Earth. He realizes the fate of both worlds rests in the unlikely alliance of technology and magic.
Overwhelmed by a new threat far beyond that of the Daemons, both Av'lor and Earth must face a devastating reality.
Read an exclusive excerpt:
Kathryn knew other Daemons and Zahkrinon would soon arrive to finish her off. She pulled the dagger from the creature’s eye and used it to try and pry open the massive jaws. Kathryn sobbed with pain and frustration as the jaws refused to move. Like a damn pit bull. A swarm of armored Daemons in the distance flew her way, and she pulled her thoughts together.
Sir Lanclor, I need your assistance.
Kate? Where the hell are you? he shouted in her mind.
Just north of the dying Daemons. "Lir’eth kanen’entilix enal’e’d’akarith falo’entili’ai vel’on." Her lightning spell ripped through the oncoming Daemons and they fell, smoking, to the ground. The smell of their charred flesh made her mouth water. She frowned in disgust at her reaction.
I see them. Don’t go anywhere, I’ll be right there.
Yeah, like she could disobey him if she wanted to. He approached around the same time the other two Zahkrinon noticed her predicament. Sir Lanclor landed at a run and dropped to her side, while a part of his squad created a perimeter around her.
"By the Goddess, Kate. How the hell did you get yourself into this?" He grabbed each side of the Zahkrinon’s mouth and tried to pull open its jaws without success. He waved over a handful of other knights, but even with their combined strength, the jaw wouldn’t budge.
The teeth remained in her side and the Zahkrinon continued their approach. "Lan, more are on their way…"
He looked over his shoulder for confirmation and glanced around to take in the scene. Kathryn felt the panic starting to break through his control. Because of Synthakla’s interference, the Link remained and if one of them died, then they both died. With her no longer present, perhaps Kathryn could sever the link.
'A Soul to Keep (Saints & Sinner #1)' by Moira Keith
A SOUL TO KEEP
by Moira Keith
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In the realm of the Fallen, there’s a little saint and sinner in us all…

One moment can impact the future.

Love never served Jayde Cross well and owing a debt to a demon is the proof. Reaping is a lonely existence and with her thirtieth birthday approaching, she's got enough to worry about without adding romance to the mix. It's why her friendship with the man living next door works so well. They both live lives filled with secrets and ignoring their self-imposed rules isn’t an option. Too bad her heart disagrees.

The past is about to come back and haunt one of Heaven’s Fallen.

Caleb Thorne always found living among mortals difficult, until he met the intriguing woman down the hall. She demands nothing of him and is completely safe. When an enemy from his past catches up with him, Caleb soon discovers the rules of the Fallen exist for a reason and loving a mortal may prove to be the bigger danger.

In a world where their love is forbidden, Jayde and Caleb may just discover that sometimes breaking rules is the only thing that can set you free.

Read an excerpt:
“You are in over your head.”

Caleb spun around and found Gabriel sitting on the bench behind him. “You really need to get a life, Gabriel, and stop obsessing over mine.”

“Oh, if obsession were truly the reason I’m here.” Gabriel focused his gaze on him. “I'm warning you, the things you don't know about this woman are as dangerous as the things you do.”

“Could you be anymore cryptic?”

“No. You know I'm bound from revealing certain things. Fate...destiny...whatever you want to call it, has to unfold. I can only warn based on the knowledge I possess. I cannot offer up any information and risk potentially altering the course of fate.” Gabriel leaned against the back of the bench and studied him.

“Never stopped you before.” Caleb knew if it would sway things in a direction that would benefit him or the Fallen in general, Gabriel would share every detail he possessed.

“You really are in over your head, aren't you?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Gabriel sighed and stared out across the street. “I could still have you reassigned. It's not too late.”

“Good luck trying. I’ll not leave here. Not while I believe she’s in danger.”

“Mortal women cannot love us the way we long to be loved. I tried to warn you a century ago when Taelynn was still alive. The mortals we fall for become pawns in the battle between good and evil. Your love for your wife, even in death, allowed Azrael to use her against you. To use her against all of us. If you’d listened when I told you to stay away from her, she would’ve been safe to live out the rest of her life and you would still be amongst the glorious ranks of Michael’s army and not stuck here with me. Instead, she is lost to us, the one sent to protect her has gone rogue, and it cost you dearly. You didn’t listen then, but I urge you to listen now.”

Review of 'Whiskey Witches: Season 1' by S. M. Blooding

WWS1banner

WW-S1-6Detective Paige Whiskey comes from a long line of witches. They may not all be the most powerful, but they are outspoken and supportive of their community. She alone has no gifts. She can’t summon fire, can’t read minds. She knows the arcane. She’s studied it. That, along with her connection to the Whiskey Witches, lands her some pretty strange cases.

Like the sacrificial murders of St. Francisville, Louisiana. There’s a killer on the loose, choosing people in a vain attempt to raise a demon. Not just any demon, though. A man born long ago, made a demon in order to protect the Gate to Hell.

Together with demon hunter, Dexx Colt, her kitchen-witch grandmother, and her paranormal investigator brother-in-law, they unravel a conspiracy far bigger than a few simple murders, and re-discover Paige’s gift.

She’s a demon summoner and she’s key to the killer’s plan.

**My thoughts**

This book reads like a Netflix marathon of a TV show. The episodes are engrossing and quick. leaving you with just enough of a cliffhanger at the end to entice you to continue with the next episode, but not so much that you are going to be swearing and throwing things while waiting for the next installment to appear. I started this season, one episode at a time, waiting for the next one to be available. Now, you all can just grab the entire season all at once and don't have to deal with the waiting.

I admit that at first I didn't like Paige. Okay, so she is a demon summoner. But, she once tried to use her gift for something so heinous that she lost her family and so much more by doing so. As more of her story is revealed, though, she softens, and I softened toward her. While being a demon summoner is kind of cool, it also really sucks, leaving her vulnerable at times, despite the strength she has within herself and from her cohorts.

Dexx is fun. He knows how to handle Paige and her attitude, while still making himself endearing. You could say I had a bit of a crush on him.

The mystery of the rampant deaths and how to make the demons stop is intriguing. It has been a while since I read a paranormal mystery. This one was well worth the time and effort. I look forward to Season 2!

Read an exclusive excerpt from 'Uriel's Fall (Ubiquity #1)' by Loralie Hall

Uriel’s Fall
by Loralie Hall

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Ronnie has the job any entry-level angel or demon would sell their soul for—she's a retrieval analyst for the largest search engine in the world. Ubiquity is a joint initiative between heaven and hell. Because what better way to track all of humanity's secrets, both good and bad, than direct access to their web browsing habits.
She might appreciate the position a little more if a) she could remember anything about her life before she started working at Ubiquity, b) the damn voice in her head would just shut up already, and c) her boss wasn't a complete dickhead.
As she searches for solutions to the first two issues, and hopes the third will work itself out in performance reviews, she uncovers more petty backstabbing than an episode of Real Housewives, and a conspiracy as old as Lucifer's descent from heaven. On top of all that, if she forgets the cover sheet on her TPS report one more time, she's absolutely going on final written warning.
Now Ronnie’s struggling to keep her sanity and job, while stopping the voice in her head from stealing her life. She almost misses the boredom of data analysis at Ubiquity. Almost.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Read an exclusive excerpt:
Michael held his hands in front of him, palms together. As he pulled one from the other, a sword hilt appeared, followed by the entire blade. The weapon wasn't as stable as he would’ve liked. The faint blade would’ve cost him his life against another of his own kind, but it was enough to take down mortals.

With a deep breath, he stepped forward, and then lunged into the fray without further hesitation. The blade of light-turned-solid pierced the commanding officer's back, and the soldier dropped to the ground with a grunt. A sparkling residue ringed the wound for less than a millisecond before his blood obliterated it.

Organized chaos erupted into bedlam as monks flattened themselves on the ground, and soldiers scrambled to figure out what was going on. As all eyes turned in Michael's direction, bursts of gunfire erupted. Bullets dug into the pillars around him. He flinched and turned away from the shrapnel. The splinters bounced off his cheek with tiny stings. He wasn't worried about them leaving marks—the only thing that would hurt would be getting them in his eyes. Soft tissue always took forever to heal, and he needed to be able to see now, not in two minutes.

He flowed like liquid light through the madness, blade catching each target and dropping them to the ground. There was no guilt felt for these lost lives. The innocent—he always had compassion for them—but one of his angelic gifts was to see the intent and potential of those around him, and the intent in these soldiers was only for harm and brutality.

A conversation with Matthew D. Ryan, author of 'The Children of Lubrochius'

What was the inspiration for this series?

I wanted to write a fantasy series prominently featuring a vampire as well as demons and demon cultists. Basically, I wanted to write a series that I would have liked reading when I was younger. The storyline and setting were inspired by many years of gaming in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and similar role-playing games. The vampire character was inspired by Count Dracula from Bram Stoker’s book “Dracula.” The other characters are, at least to a certain extent, personifications of various ideologies and philosophies. For example, Coragan was inspired by a peaceful socialist I knew in college. Regecon was inspired by the aristocratic ideology. Agyrra is a relativist; Gilliad is an absolutist. Etc....
This book is the first in the series. How many do you anticipate there being? Do you have a timeline in place? May we have a sneak peek into book 2?
There is actually a prequel to “The Children of Lubrochius” entitled “Drasmyr.” Including the prequel, I expect to write a total of five books. I’ve started Book II (the third of the five) entitled “The Sceptre of Morgulan.” As for a timeline, I don’t have a rigid one in place. I’m basically writing the series one book at a time. I do outline each book before I start writing (except “Drasmyr,” that was written almost stream-of-consciousness many years ago), and I do have a fairly good idea where everything is heading. As far as a sneak peak is concerned, I will only say that Book II will deal with the race between Korina and Coragan to acquire the Sceptre of Morgulan and the arrival of Morgulan on the scene. It will be focused largely on events that take place in Drisdak and in Rahmin Muirdra.
How do your vampire stories stand out from others in this competitive genre?
I’m a bit old school. Before writing “Drasmyr” (the prequel) I went back and read Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and based my vampire’s abilities, powers, and general disposition on the legendary Count. My vampire is not sparkly; he’s not someone you want to love, nor even hang around with. He is evil, through and through; sinister and cunning. He makes a potent adversary and a powerful villain. My book is really a fantasy book featuring a vampire rather than strictly a member of the vampire genre by itself. I always describe it as a mix of Middle Earth and Dracula. As such, it provides an intense adventure that one would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
Are you working on any other projects?
Mostly just book II, “The Sceptre of Morgulan.” I barely have time to work on this series, let alone another entire project. Well, maybe a few short stories here and there. Oh, and there is also a short non-fiction book about mental Illness I wrote a few years ago that I intend to release as an ebook. But like I said, I never seem to have enough time in the day to accomplish as much as I would like. I am very busy.
What lessons have you learned along your writing journey?
Perhaps the most obvious and powerful lesson is that writing is my vocation. I’ve written off and on since I was a young boy. And for a good ten years or more after college I wasn’t sure what I should do with my life. I would try writing, move to something else, then go back to writing. I always went back to writing. I finally decided that that was where I belonged. Currently, I’m not sure if it should be fantasy writing, but I am convinced it should be writing. Finally, I know. And I’m comfortable with that knowledge.
What can you be found doing when not writing?
I read (which is pretty much a prerequisite for writing); I watch TV news programs; and I watch movies with friends. I occasionally practice yoga or martial arts (neither one of which have I done in quite some time now). The rest of my time is spent cooking, doing yard work, and other household tasks for my father and me. Oh, and I also eat out a lot with friends, or with my dad, or even sometimes all by myself.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
I have a medical condition which sometimes leads to depression which basically takes me out of the picture for weeks on end at a time. It makes things very difficult. The worst is when I schedule activities and get hit with depression during the time I’ve scheduled stuff. I think I would be far more effective and I would be in a much better place if not for this. But there’s no use really complaining; I just have to buck up and carry on.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’m currently going through something of a spiritual crisis. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue as a fantasy writer after this one series. I’m thinking of shifting into a more spiritual focus, writing about religion and the culture and such. I’m not sure. Probably, I’ll continue to write fantasy, but at a somewhat slower pace as I write the spiritual stuff too.
Thank you so much for your time!

Children of Lubrochius

by Matthew D.Ryan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The vampire, Lucian val Drasmyr, has been defeated, but not destroyed: Now he serves another evil: Korina Bolaris, a young and gifted sorceress bent on subverting the power structure of Drisdak. Only Coragan of Esperia can hope to stop them. But is even he prepared to face the dark cult who claims her as their own: the Children of Lubrochius?
Read an excerpt:
Several hours later, Gaelan stood at attention in the Fire Hawk Sparring Arena in the Western Guard Barracks of the city of Drisdak. Prinson and Retlin, the two other young guild guardsmen from his earlier assignment were with him. Each of them still wore his chain mail armor and the now sweaty undercoat, but had relinquished his steel sword at the entrance to the arena. Anduri stood in front of them with several wooden practice swords lying at his feet. Behind them, about thirty city guards busily worked on a calisthenic routine.
Gaelan watched Anduri unclasp the real sword at his side, place it on the floor behind him, and then bend to pick up one of the wooden ones.
Gaelan stood at attention. I’m ready, he thought. Finally, I’m going to learn to fight … to kill. The thought lodged in his breast, hard and solid like a chicken bone in his throat. He knew what he wanted. He wanted this. But …
Better to die a peaceful man, than live with the stains of murder. His father had taught him that. It was the last line of the Aspallan peace oath. Aspalla of the White Palm, Lord of Healing and Counsel, was one of the most revered gods of the Paradisian Circle. He was the father of the goddess Auraria and the personal counselor of Mardikkar Evilbane, King of the Gods. He was also Gaelan’s patron deity, the deity he’d worshipped his whole life.
Meet Charbel Tadros, author of 'War of the Heavens: Leviathan'
Leciathanbanner
What was the inspiration behind this book?
Many bits and pieces of inspiration clashed together in order to bring about this novel. However, the spark which set everything on fire was the death of a good friend of mine.
Which character spoke to you the most?
Most of the characters speak to me one way or the other. If I am to choose the one who speaks to me most, I'd say it's Nick since he is my way of reviving my friend through literature.
What is one of your favorite scenes?
I really can't choose a favorite scene. I try in my novels to make every scene meaningful and memorable.
This is the first book in a series. When do you anticipate the next installment?
I already started working on the second installment. Hopefully, it will be ready and released during summer 2014 or early fall since I will be working on my Masters' Thesis at the same time.
May we have a preview of sorts?
Sure. So many things are happening at the same time, Vicky and Nigel go after the god Jizo Bosatsu while Star expands his dominion over the planet. Meanwhile, another kingdom is growing and posing a threat to Star's reach. With an imminent world war so early in the age of a new world, it doesn't bode well for the future.
What do you think is the appeal of stories of magick and demons for both readers and writers?
When magick is involved, nothing is impossible anymore. I believe that this is what appeals most to both reader and writers of fiction. It gives the the ability to create their own worlds, impose their own rules and be whoever they want to be with no strings attached except those they impose upon themselves.
Please tell us about your other published works.
I have two other published works, one is a spiritual novel entitled "The Destined Journey", and it helped many people understand their destinies and their roles in life. My other published work is a collection of poetry entitled "When the Spirit Speaks".
On what other projects are you currently working?
Alongside the second installment of War of the Heavens, I am working on my Masters' Thesis. Moreover, I am also a writer for a magazine called "Red Carpet".
How does writing fulfill you?
The thing is that I believe that I don't write, but writing happens through me. In many cases, I just feel overloaded and I can't really pinpoint the origin of the overload. That's when I turn on my laptop and start writing. When that happens, I usually have to reread everything that I had written and it's as if I'm reading someone else's work. I have no idea where it all came from.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I think it was when I was around ten. I used to watch movies and then rewrite their stories. Sometimes, when the movie was really good, I would even start writing a sequel. At first, it used to be small paragraphs and then it developed into short stories and then into full fledged novels.
You have contributed to the founding of many organizations. Please tell us about them.
I was a charter member of the Beirut Lords Lions Club and the charter president of the Beirut X-Prime Lions Club. The Lions Clubs International is a very well known international humanitarian service organization. I worked on many projects with them and left a few months ago because of internal political conflicts. Currently, I am working on a critical leadership organization called SeedArz (Arz means cedars in arabic) which will work on seeking out and helping leaders in every community. I am also a part of many other organizations but these are the ones worth mentioning for now.
You are currently working on a Masters in Special Education. Why did you feel called to this career?
It's destiny. I never envisioned I would ever work with individuals with special needs. However, I was attracted to a schooling system called "Waldorf" which is based on the works of Rudolf Steiner. The only school that uses it in Lebanon is a school for special needs kids. I wanted to volunteer there but instead got offered a job. Since my major was pedagogy anyway and I needed to do some internships, my universtity and the time accepted that I do my internship there. A few weeks after I had started, I started loving the field and the many areas that could be explored through it. Moreover, the love you feel radiating from some of these individuals is just addictive.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
'Wicked Waves (A Solsti Prophecy Novel)' by Sharon Kay Book Blast & Giveaway!
WickedWavesbookblast
Making daggers out of raindrops is only the tip of the iceberg for Brooke Bonham. As one of four women who can control the elements, her ability to manipulate water packs a deluge of potential. Eager to learn more, she’s frustrated at the precautions she must take to avoid the wrong kind of attention on Earth.
Kai's duties as a Lash demon have kept him busy on Earth for nearly two hundred years. Fighting? He was born to do it. Females? They're drawn to him. And Earth? The perfect place for him to avoid supernatural bounty hunters.
Though the two of them mix like oil and water, Kai senses that beneath Brooke’s frosty exterior hides a vortex of simmering passion. He’s determined to thaw his ice princess.
Forced to work together in the immortal realm, they track a rogue Lash demon at the helm of a widespread kidnapping operation. All too soon, Kai’s dark past catches up to them. Time runs out as a second enemy, bent on revenge, vows to stop at nothing short of Brooke’s enslavement and Kai’s death. As they and their foes stalk each other in a demonic game of cat-and-mouse, will her evolving skills and their fledgling bond be enough to save them?
About the author:
Sharon Kay was bitten early by the writing bug. At age twelve she wrote a short story, about a magic ring,that won a statewide Young Authors contest. With her nose always in a book, she read the most novels for her age group in her local library’s summer reading program.
In her teens, writing took a back seat to fashion, as she was determined to find clothes different from what everyone else bought at the mall. And what she couldn’t find, she created. She learned to sew, worked in a fabric store after school, and spent her spare time with a needle in hand. Her black and orange prom dress is still one of her favorite creations.
Sharon lives in the Chicago area with her husband and son, and didn’t expect to write again. But Wicked Wind and the Solsti series formed in her head one weekend and refused to stay quiet until she put pen to paper. Her characters tend to keep her up at night, as they banter, fall in love, and slay endless varieties of power-hungry demons.
Breed of Innocence
One goal: Hunt the demon that killed my family. Make that two goals: Survive.
Six hours ago, men in dark suits and sunglasses came looking for me.
Four hours ago, they offered me training to hunt the things that killed my family: demons.
Two hours ago, I joined their secret organization--the CGE.
Now... All I have to do is survive demon-hunting school.
The classes won't kill me, but the finals might.
Warning: This book contains kick-ass (literally) demon-hunters in training, vampires (not the cuddly, marrying type), and sarcastic (and sometimes snarky) attitudes. No humans were eaten during the writing of this book. Bitten doesn't count...right?
