'The Necromancer's Gambit' by Nicolas Wilson

The Necromancer's Gambit

by Nicolas Wilson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Knight, the sheriff of a local magical government known as "the Gambit," is called to recover a mutilated body, tainted with magic and dumped at a popular haunt. When the corpse is identified as a close associate of the Gambit, it threatens the safety of the community he protects, and those he cares about most. As the fragile peace amongst the city's magic-wielding factions disintegrates, Knight must track down a cadre of murderers before his friends are picked off, one by one- with each death used to strengthen the spells cast against the Gambit.
Read an excerpt:
I try not to snap at her. Interrogation’s never pretty, even when Pawn isn’t involved. And I also don’t have the heart to tell her just how vanilla this one actually was. “That’s probably how this played out. But more often than not, interrogation gets you information a witness wouldn’t give up willingly. Interrogation’s a part of what I do. So’s scene investigation. Tracking. Pawn goes home and blackout drinks tonight away, and Bishop, after a day or two pulling apart that overcooked McNugget gets to set it aside. But this case is mine until I bury it. Pawn’s an ugly little thug-”
“Thanks,” he says, before realizing he should have kept his nose buried in his refrigerator, trying to find the halvah.
“-but he’s a terrier, and barks real loud to keep people in check. But when they become unchecked, it’s my job to find them and shut them down.”
Cover Reveal! 'Triangulating Bliss' by Janelle Jalbert
TRIANGULATING BLISS
by Janelle Jalbert
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A struggling veteran reads about the mysterious death of a local athlete and wants to learn more. He meets the owner of the business linked to the crime and discovers others have “disappeared”.

All stories include a man with dark hair, blue eyes, and a strong jaw.

Then, it’s his turn.

The mysterious forces at Bliss change everything. What brought them all to Bliss is not as it appears and their lives are powerfully interconnected across space and time.

Read an excerpt:
Greg opened the backdoor to Bliss. He forced himself to stop thinking about how the name of the place made him think of a day spa rather than a barbeque joint. The tell-tale wood smoke greeted him, causing his stomach to growl and suspending his thoughts about the name of the place. Musical chimes sounded above the door as Greg’s eyes adjusted from the glare of the fall sun to the darkened interior.

Figures, he thought. Why wouldn't there be chimes at a place called Bliss?

Once his eyes adjusted, the bar area didn't seem to be out of the ordinary. Greg stopped at the partition just inside the door. It was covered with a list of sayings:
Follow Your Bliss
Happiness Is an Inside Job
Be Careful What You Wish For
There's No Better Time to Claim the Future You Want Than Now
A half-laugh escaped him. He thought it was a menu board at first and the philosophizing caught him off guard. Still, the final statement hit close to home, and he took a deep breath.

Greg headed to the long black bar. A smaller party room was to the right with about a dozen tables to the left. It had the feel of a contemporary jazz club or maybe a speakeasy. Beyond the tables, bright daylight streamed into the lounge from a passage between the front diner area and the bar. No creepy Twilight Zone feeling here, he thought.

Two muted, flat screen TVs hung on either side of the wood shelves stocked with bottles of all sizes. He eyed the taps and sports coverage while surveying the place. Though there were no windows in the back area, yet it didn't feel claustrophobic. Between the lighting, mirrors and glass, there was elegance to the place that radiated a different type of light. Poster-sized black and white pictures hung on the walls, showing the history of the place. Greg guessed they were from the 1940's. Smaller pictures of patrons and notable artifacts related to "Our Place" dotted the walls. Greg knew from his early research that Our Place was the name of the restaurant until a few years earlier.

Greg settled in, still getting a sense of the place, when a woman with graying dark hair approached him. Though he talked with Lois on the phone, this was the first time he saw her. She was not remarkably tall, but definitely commanded the bar and carried herself in a way that betrayed her real age. She had a look of knowing, or maybe it was just cheer that she had a customer on a dead afternoon.

Meet Charbel Tadros, author of 'War of the Heavens: Leviathan'

Leciathanbanner

What was the inspiration behind this book?
Many bits and pieces of inspiration clashed together in order to bring about this novel. However, the spark which set everything on fire was the death of a good friend of mine.
Which character spoke to you the most?
Most of the characters speak to me one way or the other. If I am to choose the one who speaks to me most, I'd say it's Nick since he is my way of reviving my friend through literature.
What is one of your favorite scenes?
I really can't choose a favorite scene. I try in my novels to make every scene meaningful and memorable.
This is the first book in a series. When do you anticipate the next installment?
I already started working on the second installment. Hopefully, it will be ready and released during summer 2014 or early fall since I will be working on my Masters' Thesis at the same time.
May we have a preview of sorts?
Sure. So many things are happening at the same time, Vicky and Nigel go after the god Jizo Bosatsu while Star expands his dominion over the planet. Meanwhile, another kingdom is growing and posing a threat to Star's reach. With an imminent world war so early in the age of a new world, it doesn't bode well for the future.
What do you think is the appeal of stories of magick and demons for both readers and writers?
When magick is involved, nothing is impossible anymore. I believe that this is what appeals most to both reader and writers of fiction. It gives the the ability to create their own worlds, impose their own rules and be whoever they want to be with no strings attached except those they impose upon themselves.
Please tell us about your other published works.
I have two other published works, one is a spiritual novel entitled "The Destined Journey", and it helped many people understand their destinies and their roles in life. My other published work is a collection of poetry entitled "When the Spirit Speaks".
On what other projects are you currently working?
Alongside the second installment of War of the Heavens, I am working on my Masters' Thesis. Moreover, I am also a writer for a magazine called "Red Carpet".
How does writing fulfill you?
The thing is that I believe that I don't write, but writing happens through me. In many cases, I just feel overloaded and I can't really pinpoint the origin of the overload. That's when I turn on my laptop and start writing. When that happens, I usually have to reread everything that I had written and it's as if I'm reading someone else's work. I have no idea where it all came from.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I think it was when I was around ten. I used to watch movies and then rewrite their stories. Sometimes, when the movie was really good, I would even start writing a sequel. At first, it used to be small paragraphs and then it developed into short stories and then into full fledged novels.
You have contributed to the founding of many organizations. Please tell us about them.
I was a charter member of the Beirut Lords Lions Club and the charter president of the Beirut X-Prime Lions Club. The Lions Clubs International is a very well known international humanitarian service organization. I worked on many projects with them and left a few months ago because of internal political conflicts. Currently, I am working on a critical leadership organization called SeedArz (Arz means cedars in arabic) which will work on seeking out and helping leaders in every community. I am also a part of many other organizations but these are the ones worth mentioning for now.
You are currently working on a Masters in Special Education. Why did you feel called to this career?
It's destiny. I never envisioned I would ever work with individuals with special needs. However, I was attracted to a schooling system called "Waldorf" which is based on the works of Rudolf Steiner. The only school that uses it in Lebanon is a school for special needs kids. I wanted to volunteer there but instead got offered a job. Since my major was pedagogy anyway and I needed to do some internships, my universtity and the time accepted that I do my internship there. A few weeks after I had started, I started loving the field and the many areas that could be explored through it. Moreover, the love you feel radiating from some of these individuals is just addictive.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
I'm expecting a baby girl soon!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If anyone would like to get in touch with me, they can find all my information on my website: www.charbeltadros.com.
Thank you so much for your time!
Thank you!

Review of 'Illusions Begin (MysticSeeker 1)' by N.L. Greene

Book Info-

Title- Illusions Begin
Series-A Mystic Seeker Novel ( #1)
By- N.L. Greene
Publication Date- January 16th, 2014

Blurb-

Katherine Rebecca has always done exactly what was expected of her. Her prim and proper upbringing taught her the importance of family, sacrifice, and social stature. She has followed in her parent’s footsteps, being trained and groomed daily almost from birth, to take over the family law firm. It was never a question of IF she wanted to but WHEN she would take the reins of the company. She worked rigorously toward that predetermined goal her entire life. She gave up friends, boyfriends, and an exciting social life in order to propel herself through school and college. Katherine Rebecca strived to please her parents. More than anything, she basked in their praise and approval. But now, at 21 years old, she finds herself leading a life that is nothing like the life she imagined for herself.

Becky has always possessed a deep love of magic. Ever since she was a small child she has been fascinated with magicians, illusions, mystery, and the vague hope that there was some sort of real magic in the world. But this is a secret no one knows, or at least that’s what she thought. Until one day Becky finds a mysterious business card in her pocket that leads her to an equally mysterious man. He opens up a whole new world of possibilities to her, one with a tantalizing proposition that she never thought imaginable.

Could magic actually be real?

**My thoughts**

I really liked this story. For once, there is magic without the need for witches, fae, wizards, and other paranormal creatures! Becky is an ambitious young woman who is eager to please her parents, yet has been drawn to the world of magic since she was a young child. She studies it in a traditional sense, as in following the masters that you and I watch on TV or in live shows, never dreaming that it could really exist beyond sleight of hand. In this intro to the MysticSeeker series, Becky finds out that her dreams could actually come true. Her journey is just beginning. And it looks like it will be an interesting one.

Becky is a hard worker. She is socially awkward, but has managed to already been engaged once and finds another suitor (and possibly even more?). She is very smart and pretty intuitive. Despite her awkwardness, she is pretty likable. She lets her parents control her life, but doesn't feel like she has much of a choice right now. Circumstances occur that continue to perpetuate this idea, even when she thinks she is able to move on. I have a feeling she is getting closer to coming into her own, though, and will grab the reins and simply take off soon.

I did have a very hard time believing that she was only 21 years old. I mean, she seems to act like a 21 year-old woman, but I cannot buy that she managed to get through college and law school, graduating three years early, to become a lawyer. The ages of a couple of other characters, like Becky's secretary, also didn't seem to add up.

Once I pushed the age issues aside, I was able to kick back and really enjoy this story. I look forward to reading more of the series.

About the Author-

Greene, who is 1/2 of the author duo Riana Lucas, has decided to venture outside of the Fantasy world that she and her best friend created with Poppy and The Deadly Flowers Series to write a few books on her own. While she loves working with her best friend, writing solo has allowed her to explore interest that had solely been her own. She spends a lot of time reading her favorite authors which range all over the place and in every genre, but spends just as much time with her husband and two daughters, traveling, shopping, and playing video games. Nichole was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Florida, where she and her high school sweetheart live with their two children.
