At eighty-four years old, widower and award-winning geneticist Bernie Crenshaw has reached the end of his life. Bernie gifts his only grandson, eighteen-year-old Inglewood high school senior Nova, his multimillion-dollar property located in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills.

Years after Bernie's death, Nova hosts a wild twenty-first birthday party weekend filled with alcohol, music, and OnlyFans web cameras. After a handful of eerie encounters in the surrounding Los Angeles forest, Nova's friends allege that his grandpa's cabin is the burial ground for people who disappeared during their childhood.

The birthday weekend shifts from celebration to terror as the friends piece together that the man Nova knew as "Popsi" matches the profile of one of the most notorious wanted criminals in Los Angeles-"L.A. Love Hunter."

Will Nova preserve the Crenshaw family's sadistic legacy, or will he choose the rare and valuable gift of friendship?

Read an excerpt:
Forty-five years ago

Eric had managed to slip out of bed and past Lennox’s quarters unheard. Under his arm, he carried a carved wooden chess set. He had gotten it for his seventh birthday last week, which he had spent alone with Lennox in front of the television.

Bernie had been away speaking at the ‘World Changer’ conference in Seattle, one of the largest media events in the county to celebrate black people making a difference in their respective industries. Bernie had won an award for excellence in biological sciences, specifically genetic sequencing research.

Eric was awestruck that his father was the same man spotlighted in news articles and photographed with Jimmy Carter and famous celebrities.

Eric had watched his father on television while opening his Christmas presents, all picked out by Lennox with ‘From Dad’ forged on the tags. He could identify his father’s writing and signature within a fraction of a second, but still, he accepted these gifts with the tags written by Lennox.

“Look what Daddy got me,” Eric said to his mother, Madeline, who was busy laughing on the phone.

Madeline shut the door.

Eric stood disappointed and motionless.

Interview with Magenta Kim (from Grandpa's Cabin)

Ross: "Hey, Ms. Kim, thank you so much for discussing your role in Grandpa's Cabin with me. I'm excited to meet you in person. I feel starstruck a bit!"

Magenta Kim enters the interview set. She's dressed in a form-fitting yellow mini dress and 10-inch black heels. Her hair, freshly dyed magenta, is pulled back in a bun. Her makeup is natural and subtle.

Magenta: OMG, Ross! Magenta Kim rolls her eyes and smiles. Those boots are giving Miami yacht club views. You didn't come to play. Magenta pops her gum and chews loudly.

Ross: Apparently, you didn't either. You know what's wild? Even though I wrote "you" in Grandpa's Cabin, I feel weird. I know you because you came from me...but there's so much I don't know because you are just an idea, so you could be anything.

Magenta: Aww, that was cute. Be careful what you manifest, Mr. Victory. Magenta tilts her head, raises her eyes suspiciously, and speaks spookily.

Ross: Not in a wrong way, but there's more to you than meets the eye. Sometimes, people see the magenta hair and nails and think they know you. Like, 'ok, that girl is this.' But no one knows you, really...

Magenta: Not at all. Bitches always think they know...I'm not a princess ok. I know I look like one...but I'm not. Magenta flips her wrist and dangles her nails.

A cameraman laughs out loud. Ross looks over at the man intensely.

Ross: So what do the people need to know? What should I know before I write the second book in the series?

Magenta: I grew up in LA. Koreatown. That's what you wrote, right? So, I suggest MF's know not to fuck with me. Ever. I grew up off of Wilshire in a two-bedroom apartment. It felt like I had everything, but now I know my parents did backflips to make it seem like that.

Ross: What was that like growing up in Koreatown?

Magenta: Well, I know people watching this are probably like, "What is she?" "What are YOU bitch?" Magenta laughs. OMG, OK. Let's do the checklist. My dad is black; my mom is Korean. This was during the '90s, so blacks and Koreans did have the best relationship. My parents loved each other, but I always felt like people outside my family always had something to say.

Ross looks on with curiosity.

Ross: So when you grow up like that...It must feel like you never know who to believe. Do you believe who's in front of you or what other people tell you, even about yourself? Like a state of confusion.

Magenta: Points to the interview. Bingo.

Magenta: And all of that caused my parents to break up. The constant interrogation. The racism. The belittling. The disrespect every moment. That changed them. And you know the craziest part of it all?

Ross: What?

Magenta: All those people...who had something to say. All of them...No where to be found. So it's like, oh, all this destruction is not my fault, but I'm the one who has to die for it!

My family unit died for it. So, that's what the people need to know about Magenta. Yes, I'm black and Korean. No, I don't trust you. No, I don't care about you and your opinions. Go over there. Magenta laughs.

Ross: So, let's talk about your co-star Nova Crenshaw. How did you meet?

Magenta: Ah, Nova is my pooh bear. Rich fucker. When my dad moved to Inglewood, my mom decided to travel back and forth to Seoul to help my ajumma. So, I met Nova at Inglewood.

Ross: High school?

Magenta: Yes. If it weren't for Nova, Pearl, and even Ruben's crazy ass...there would be no Magenta Kim. That's family.

Ross: Have you met Nova's grandfather?

Prolonged silence overtakes the interview set.

Magenta: Ross, respectfully, I don't want to go there. You wrote him, so maybe you should tell me why you created that monster.
