'A Bloom in Winter' by T.J. Brown Super Book Blast!

Summerset Abbey: A Bloom in Winter
by T. J. Brown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
After Prudence’s desperate marriage and move to London, sisters Rowena and Victoria fear they have lost their beloved friend forever. Guilt-ridden and remorseful, Rowena seeks comfort from a daring flyboy and embraces the most dangerous activity the world has ever seen, and Victoria defies her family and her illness to make her own dream occupation as a botanist come true. As England and the world step closer to conflict, the two young women flout their family, their upbringing, and their heritage to seize a modern future of their own making.
Victoria Buxton
With her delicate constitution but strong, unflappable spirit, Victoria has never followed societal conventions, the rules of fashion, or the pursuit of a husband. Instead, she finds herself drawn to the controversial—and dangerous—fight for women’s suffrage. But her dream is compromised, and her heart divided, when her struggles for equal rights collide with unexpected love.
Rowena Buxton
After yearning to no avail for a certain young pilot to fly back into her life, Rowena fears her chances for happiness have been jeopardized by recklessness and scandal. Burdened with guilt for bringing her sister Prudence to Summerset Abbey as a lady’s maid while she herself led a life of privilege, Rowena hopes to one day make amends. But her desire to set things right is complicated by her passion for flight and a sudden engagement…to the wrong man.
Prudence Tate
Raised like a sister to Victoria and Rowena, then banished to the servants’ quarters when their father passed away, Prudence has seen both sides of life, upstairs and down. But once the truth about her parentage was revealed, Prudence forged a new life for herself, married to a penniless veterinary student. Living in poverty in a shabby London flat, she wonders if she’s made a terrible mistake—and there’s no turning back...
Read an excerpt:
Victoria sat impatiently, her fingers skittering across the shining top of her lovely round desk, once used by an ancestor who would no doubt be completely scandalized by the plan she had just proposed to Kit.
“Let me get this straight,” he frowned at her, his dark red brows furrowing like caterpillars. “You want me to help you to sneak into London for a week?”
She glared at the mocking tone of his voice. “You know, you’re usually quite handsome, but right now, you look more like an ogre from a Grimms’ fairy tale than a human, so you can stop glowering at me.”
His head came up and he looked at her, his eyebrows unfurrowing and shooting up on his forehead in such a comical way, she couldn’t help but giggle.
“You think I’m handsome?”
Victoria shrugged. “Yes. Sort of like a fox, with your ginger hair and sharp eyes. But don’t let it go to your head; Sebastian and Colin are far better looking than you. Now back to my plan.”
He rolled his eyes at that and got back to the matter at hand. “The only way it would work would be to bring Elaine into it. There is no way your aunt would approve of your traveling to London on your own, and she certainly would never let you drive off alone with me.”
Victoria shook her head, frustrated by the fuss. “These people do know I’m of age, right? Why may Cousin Colin come and go as he pleases, yet Elaine and I are required to inform everyone where we are at every moment of every day? How is that fair?”
“Do you know you’re rather lovable when you act like a suffragette?” he teased.
She threw a fountain pen at him and missed. It exploded on the mantel. “Oh blast! Now see what you made me do.”
He laughed. “Made you do? No, leave it,” he said when she stood to clean it. “No one comes back here and we’ll call it art, much as that crazy art nouveau crowd calls their stuff art.”
“Oh!” She stamped her foot. He knew she loved art nouveau.
“Now don’t get your petticoats in a bundle, kitten, and let’s figure out how to get you to London so you can meet with…whom?”
“Harold L. Herbert, the managing editor for the Botanist’s Quarterly,” she said, sitting back down.
“Ah yes, so you can meet with Hairy Herbert. And what do you hope to gain from this meeting?”
For a moment, Victoria drew a blank. “Well, he said he wanted to meet with me. He finds my writing thought-provoking. He not only paid me for an article, but is also interested in more of my work. So, more assignments, I suppose.” She tilted her nose up in the air, waiting for him to make fun of her.
To her surprise he didn’t. “So you’ve never met Hairy Herbert. Have you spoken to him on the telephone?” He took the seat across from the desk and crossed his long legs. His eyes regarded her gravely.
Victoria shifted uneasily. “No.”
“So he doesn’t know that the author of the scientific article he paid ten pounds for is, in fact, an eighteen-year-old girl?”
Victoria opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
'Dehumanized' by Michael Loring
Title: Dehumanized
Series: Dehumanized #1
Author: Michael Loring
Genre: Paranormal Urban Fantasy
Publisher: Bokheim Publishing
Format: Ebook and Paperback
Length: Paperback 522 pages | Ebook 524 pages
Book Description:
A deadly and currently incurable disease has been released as the result of an unknown experiment that went awry. Dubbed 'Lycanthropy' by the media due to its similarity to the horror movie genre depiction about werewolves, anyone infected begins to change, and every night of the full moon the 'beast' within is released. Within one year, lycanthropy spread throughout Europe, Asia and has now infected the USA. In an attempt to control and treat the outbreak, concerned governments have begun creating camps to contain those who are infected and to help find a cure. Despite rumors comparing these camps to the concentration camps of almost 70 years ago, the US government maintains these camps have the best interests of the public and the residents at heart. Expectations for a cure in the next year remain high.
Ryan Zachery lived his life the way all high school teenagers should - carefree, and oblivious to anything around him. He had an attractive girlfriend and hope for the future. One night when he was walking home he was attacked by an unknown assailer. He awoke in the hospital to learn he had been infected by lycanthropy, a disease he had heard about but had ignored.
Taken by armed guards and dragged away from his parents who did not understand what was happening, Ryan was thrown into a US camp made for those 'suffering' from lycanthropy. Treated like prisoners, he and other lycanthropes were abused by the guards and by their own kind. Scientists regularly performed experiments that promised to treat the disease, yet only caused pain. If Ryan or any of the other roommates acted up or demanded answers, they were thrown into solitary, nicknamed the 'dungeon', and ignored until they became docile once more.
But at the night of the full moon, the beast within him is freed. The beast hates the prison and Ryan. When an experimental procedure allows the beast and Ryan to communicate, the two enemies become unlikely allies who will stop at nothing to tear down the walls keeping them prisoner. With the beast's help, Ryan learns how to change at will. When even his own kind begin to fear him, he creates a plan to release all lycanthropes. They caged the beast, but now he will show them that he will never be dehumanized.
Read an exclusive excerpt:
Garza’s teeth curled back in a feral smile as he nodded his head. “I like your thinking, but I wish them alive. I need to set some rules the two pendejos need to learn.”
“Does Cezar know where they are?” Garza’s right hand man had been missing for the last hour. Tino suspected he was gathering information on the whereabouts of the brothers.
“Cezar is escorting a special guest here. But Hector has been following the two and called to tell me he lost them in the colonias.”
“I’ll start there.” Tino turned to leave.
“Rodriguez. If you cannot bring them in, do not show your face here again.”
The threatening tone punctuated what he already knew. If he didn’t bring the Alvarez brothers back he would be hunted down and killed because he’d witnessed and participated in illegal activities.
“I will be back with your guests.”
Tino exited the office congratulating himself at having made it to Garza’s inner sanctum, but now realized there were two more doors that would need breeched before he could find the evidence to bring in the Drug Enforcement Agency.
His mind wandered to how to find the Alvarez brothers and make his way up in status to gain entry into the room behind the bullet-proof door. He stepped out onto the front portico. Cezar walked alongside a woman who carried herself in a familiar way.
Tino’s blood iced with fear as he recognized the long hair, button nose, and wire-rimmed glasses. Another glance at the woman he knew so well and the ice melted, simmered, and quickened his heart. What brought his querida to the drug lord’s Mexico City compound? Dread, desire, and regret collided as he blindly slammed into a cement pillar.
When Maeve McKenna renounces her witch powers and accepts a low-key nurse practitioner position at a Virginia retirement community, the last thing she expects is a suicide her first day on the job.
As the town's sexy sheriff, Paul Sutton, starts looking into the tragic death of his father's friend, Maeve can't help but get involved--with both the case and him. Their informal investigation unveils an old journal that connects the ruins of a nearby asylum and long-forgotten cemetery with the shiny new retirement community's memory unit--and Maeve's Alzheimer's patients.
Maeve senses a sinister presence in the old asylum, calling to the patients, but in order to stop it from killing again, she must first conquer some demons of her own and reclaim the magic she's denied herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Read an excerpt:
She imagined the thoughts that must be running through his head. She had to tell him everything now. If she didn’t, he would be dead in the next few days. He needed protection.

She stood up. “Want a glass of wine? This is going to be a long conversation.”

“Since I was just nearly killed, how about some whisky?” He fell back against the sofa. Liadan put her paws on his chest and licked his face.

Maeve went into the kitchen, trying to figure out how she’d gotten her powers back. It dawned on her that the morning after the Gems had arrived, her tea was not in its regular spot on the counter. She’d assumed her mother had only been cleaning, but apparently she’d also switched the contents of the jar to non-spelled tea.

She reached into the cabinet for the tea container and looked at it, shaking her head, then laughed. Never had she been so glad for the Gems meddling in her life. She threw it in the trash and returned to the living room with glasses, red wine, and a small bottle of George Dickel missing a few sips. “Here you go.”

He took the whiskey and tossed back a shot, then poured another glass, which he held between his hands. “So, what is it that tried to kill me and my father today?”

“You’re not going to believe me at first, but if you’ll hear me out, I think I have a pretty good case.”

He gestured with one hand for her to begin.

“Everything I’ve seen and heard, all the information in the journal, points to the presence of an evil spirit. I believe it’s the spirit of Dr. Colton Carterage.”

Paul stared at her for several moments. “You’re serious.”

“Completely.” She poured herself a glass of red wine from the freshly opened bottle, and sat in the chair across from him. A tingle of energy floated in the air. She recognized a witch cat at work. She tried desperately not to laugh at Liadan working her little cat magic on him, licking his face, nuzzling his chest, pushing her paws against his arm. He didn’t know what was happening, but darling LiLi was removing the mists of doubt from Paul’s eyes.

Maeve explained about patients in the dementia unit seeing ghosts of people described in the book. She told him about the white deer and why the limb had fallen. When she came to the part she dreaded most, she looked at LiLi and the cat complied. She curled up in his lap, purring, increasing the intensity of her witchy magic to ease his believing.

“There’s one more thing you need to know. My mother, my aunts…and me…we’re witches.”

Interview with Frank Nappi, author of 'Nobody Has to Know'

Today, I would like to welcome author Frank Nappi to the blog, as he shares more about himself and his latest amazing book, 'Nobody Has to Know.'

What was the inspiration behind this book?

The inspiration behind this book is similar to the inspiration behind all of my work. Any facet of the human condition that appeals to me and beckons for further exploration is enough to set my imagination on fire. For instance, the catalyst for my first novel was a fortuitous encounter with two very special WWII veterans - Mr. Bill McGinn and Mr. Eddie Hynes -- during a Veterans Speaker Program that I initiated at Oceanside High School for my classes. After hearing them speak about the insidious residue of war, I was inspired like never before. The stories they told me, and our subsequent friendship, became the basis for my award winning novel Echoes From The Infantry. My Mickey Tussler series was inspired by my love of baseball and my interest in special needs folks and the obstacles they face in a sometimes unenlightened society. Nobody Has To Know came to be as a result of my many years of teaching in a high school and my observation of so many young folks who struggle with fractured psyches. So many poor, destructive decisions are folks make are the result of a a patchwork of misfortune and pain that just cannot be eradicated.

What message do you hope to send with the story?

Well, very little in this life is black and white. People tend to make snap judgments about others and situations when they have little or no knowledge of what precipitated some delicate, often controversial situations. The message in Nobody Has To Know is that the landscape of our past often becomes instrumental in who we are presently. For better or worse, we are products of our early experiences. And while there are ways (therapy, support groups, etc.) to mitigate some of the more unfortunate occurrences from our past that we may have to face eventually as adults, often there is no panacea. And the results sometimes are disastrous.

Do you think illicit affairs between teachers are students are more prevalent today than they used to be, or is the media just jumping on more stories and exposing them?

Although today’s youth is far more uninhibited and a lot more “worldly” at an earlier age, this sort of thing has been going on forever. All of us have heard stories before of teacher/student romances. I suppose that the thought is an inherent byproduct of the teacher mystique as seen through the eyes of a student.

I have been teaching for 18 years and get at least one marriage proposal a year. Of course, those are usually from kindergartners. Have you ever had a student openly have a crush on you?

Hmmm. You certainly know how to make a guy work, huh? In the interest of full disclosure and total honesty, yes, it has happened, although I am not so sure how open it was. I don’t think it was -- at least I hope not! This sort of thing is really a slippery slope, especially when a teacher is young. Most professionals, however, learn quickly how to diffuse any potential awkwardness or impropriety. It is when other factors are at play - as in the case of Cameron Baldridge - that these harmless flirtations morph into something far more menacing.

I remember having a crush on my gym teachers in kindergarten, and maybe one student teacher in high school. Did you have crushes on any of your teachers?

You know what...no, I never did. Most of my teachers were either men or elderly women. It made it easier I guess, but does that mean I was cheated???

Does your role as a creative writing teacher influence your writing at all?

It is more the other way around, although I have to say that I believe that being good at one helps me to be better at the other. My experiences in the world of writing and publishing have allowed me to offer some valuable insights into the writing process for my students. I always feel as though I can speak with great conviction about those things that really “work” in the realm of crafting stories because I am teaching from a place replete with much experience.

We're all familiar with English teachers having us analyze all kinds of symbolism within a book, even if the author probably didn't mean anything by it. Do you teach your students to purposely use symbolism in their writing? Or should writers just naturally write and let symbolism take place if it happens?

The question all English teachers are asked, with great passion, is “how do you know that (fill in author name) meant for the reader to see that as a symbol”? I think that all real students of literature realize that there are no absolutes. Many authors will deliberately employ symbols and motifs in their fiction for a directed purpose. Other times, it does, as you suggest, occur on a subconscious level. The important thing to realize is that artists are always looking for ways to convey messages in creative, figurative ways. This is what separates great fiction from good fiction.

Any other writing advice to share with us?

May I quote Hemingway -- “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

What are some of your other works? And on what projects are you currently working?

I have published four novels. Echoes From The Infantry is about a WWII soldier who remains mired in the psychological cloud of combat for years after the final shots are fired. My Mickey Tussler books trace the improbable rise to popularity and local stardom of a 17 year old autistic baseball player in the 1940s. And of course Nobody Has To Know follows the self destructive path that teacher Cameron Baldridge chooses. Presently, I am working on the third installment of Mickey Tussler and another thriller.

What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

I am milk phobic, something whose origins trace back to a rusty milk cart, an expired container of Farmland and a despotic third grade teacher. I get shivers just thinking about it!

Anything else you wish to share?

I love the beach, especially in the off season. I spend a lot of time there. I am also a rabid baseball fan, so many hours are spent watching my two sons play the greatest game there is or lamenting the fate of my New York Mets. Country music ain't so bad either! Naturally, many of these things have a tendency to creep into my novels. The most obvious case I suppose is the baseball backdrop for my Mickey Tussler series. There is always, I believe, a lot of every author is each novel he/she creates. However, I suppose in light of the subject matter of my latest book, I should issue the disclaimer that not everything that appears in a work of fiction is rooted in personal experience.

Thank you so much for your time!

Interview with Misa Buckley, author of 'Tin Cat'

Welcome to the virtual book tour for 'Tin Cat' by Misa Buckley! Take a few moments to get to know the author and her book a little better. Thanks for stopping by!

What was the inspiration behind 'Tin Cat'?

The spark was a submission call for geek heroes/heroines. I wanted something contemporary on the surface, sort of a Hitchhikers thing where the normal hero gets sucked into a science fiction world, and I’d also loved The Cat From Outer Space as a kid. Everything merged into one crazy lump, as these things tend to do :D

How much do you have in common with the main character, Amber Gerald?

We’re both sci fi geeks and cat lovers. And we appear to save the same taste in dark strangers…

If you could have an android pet, what would you choose?

I love cats, but there’s something to be said for a K9. I said I was a geek.

Would you consider the company of an android person?

If he was fully functional :D

What are some other projects that you have in the works?

I’m working on a cyberpunk novel at the moment, as well as a series of sci fi shorts for Champagne.

What is the appeal of science fiction for you, whether reading or writing?

The possibilities are endless. No one really knows what’s out there and that unknown is exciting.

When did you know you wanted to become a writer?

I don’t think there’s been a time when I’ve not known. I’ve always told (or retold) stories.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

Knitting, baking bread, or reading. I read a LOT.

If you could spend one day with anyone, living or dead, whom would you choose?

I’d love to have met Neil Armstrong and shaken the hand of a man who’d walked on the Moon. That would be awesome.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

Probably the above answer, heh. Most will be surprised that it wasn’t someone else ;)

Anything else you would like to share?

Science is more fun than most people think it is.

Science Fiction Romance

Synopsis:

 A year after the accident that put her in a wheelchair, Amber Gerald has more or less gotten used to living with her impairment. It doesn’t make a difference to running a comic book store anyway, and the customers have been the best support group she could have wished for.

When she rescues an abandoned cat, Amber has no idea that she’s interfering in the mad scheme of a time travelling bank robber. Or that the man that walks into her store dressed like Blade is about to become her bodyguard.

Between being an unwitting owner of an android cat and falling for a cybernetic bounty hunter, Amber finds her life a whole new level of weird as science fiction becomes a very real factual threat.

'Conflicting Hearts' by J.D. Burrows Promo Blitz!

Contemporary Romance
Date Published: November 2012

Synopsis:

Rachel Hayward hoped to have a quiet thirtieth birthday alone. Instead, fate had different plans.

Caught in traffic and late for work, she can do nothing except wait for the freeway gridlock to ease. A three-car pileup has caused the snarl. Just as cars begin to move at a faster clip, Rachel takes her eyes off the road to gawk at the accident and rear-ends the car in front of her.

Sick over having ruined her day, she lowers her head onto the steering wheel and waits for the driver to begin a tirade over her stupidity. Instead, a kind man taps on her window showing genuine concern about her welfare. The brief colliding encounter suddenly starts a relationship between two strangers that takes off under odd circumstances.

When the couple becomes intimate, their relationship turns into a conflicting set of desires and needs. Rachel is bound by a shameful, dark childhood. After she falls in love with the handsome Ian Richards, she is faced with the decision to leave him or finally confront her demons to obtain the one thing in life she's always needed--healing from the sexual abuse she endured as a little girl.

Read an excerpt:
Ian slowly turns me around so that I’m facing him. We’re nose to nose. Our bodies are touching front to front. This is not good, or maybe it is good. He doesn’t say a thing, except to look at me with a smoldering gaze. A second later, he lazily moves his eyes toward my lips. I’m frozen. I look at him with half anticipation and half panic. He’s going to kiss me; I know it. His intentions are clearly expressed in his blue eyes, which have turned a shade darker. I’m losing it. Hurriedly, I remind him of his words to fend off the advance.

“Uh, I thought you wanted to be just friends?”

A look of admiration sweeps across his face. He gently brings his hand up to my forehead and brushes a few strands of hair out of my eyes. Ian is silent, but it’s obvious he is thinking this through. It’s driving me crazy being close to his body.

“You want more?” I whisper, trying to get him to say something.

“Do you?”

He answers with a question. It’s annoying. “I asked you first,” I reply, not cracking a smile or giving away my heart pounding in my chest. I can’t look at him any longer. I close my eyes, and silently ask God, who I’ve ignored for years, to help me.

Then I feel the warmth of his breath approach. He circles my lips with his and gives me a long, tender kiss. Sweet Jesus. He tastes so delicious! I hope the breath mint I popped in my mouth a half hour ago is still working. Eventually, he pulls away, and I open my eyes.

“Does that answer your question?”

Interview with Hadena James, author of 'Life and Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels'

Today I would like to welcome Hadena James to the blog. She shares a bit more about herself and her latest book, The Life and Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels.

What was the inspiration behind 'The Life and Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels'?

I was looking to write something “different”. I had written quite a few hard-boiled mysteries, but I wanted to expand and write something lighter. I wanted it to have elements of comedy and an “almost” romantic subplot.

How alike are you and Nadine?

Our biggest shared trait is our dislike of cooking, but I also tend to be forgetful (like her).

Let's say this book is chosen to be developed for the screen. Would you want to write the screenplay yourself? How much involvement would you want in the process?

Would I want to personally write the screenplay? No. However, Nadine’s dry and somewhat warped sense of humor would require me to be very involved. I’d turn into a hover and the screenwriter would hate me.

What is so appealing about writing thrillers?

Thrillers appeal to me because they have me on the edge of my seat. Even when writing one, I have that “edge of my seat, have to know what happens next” mentality. So, I struggle to put down a thriller when I’m writing it because I have to know what happens next.

What are some of your current works in progress?

I just finished “Tortured Dreams” the first in the “Dreams & Reality series” last week, it is hard-boiled thriller about hunting serial killers. I am working on “Dark Resurrections” the third in my fantasy series and “Elysium Dreams” the second in my “Dreams & Reality series” and I might be starting a new Nadine Daniels’ novella… not sure on the last yet.

Where have some of your most memorable trips around the world been?

Berlin, Germany. I fell in love with the city the moment I got over jet-lag. I spent a good amount of time there and it was just the most amazing place ever. The people were all very nice, the city itself was beautiful and it’s a good thing we had digital cameras, because I brought back over 2000 pictures.

Which destinations are still on your bucket list?

England, Scotland, Belize and Germany (again)

You like to listen to music while writing. What genres/bands do you favor? Does that tend to change, depending on what you're writing?

I almost always listen to either German Rock or classical when I write. My favorite bands are KMFDM, Rammstein, Oomph!, Eisbrecher, and L’ame Immortelle on the rock side. I like German and Russian classical composers when I listen to classical. It doesn’t change depending on what I write, I listen for the beats, not the words.

If you could become a character in any book, which would you choose?

Sherlock Holmes – I know that’s odd, but not only was he my first fictional crush, I would love to have his powers of observation and cold, logical determinedness.

What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

I have three degrees; history, Russian and German, but I started college with the intent of becoming an archaeologist or Egyptologist and it is very hard for me to keep my passion for history out of my writing.

Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me!

Thank you so much for your time!

Read an excerpt:
His frustration was evident. While my situation still sucked, at least it was looking better. If I could just stay alive long enough, I would be saved.

“That would probably be the most interesting thing you’ve said all day.” He sat back down, facing me. I would have preferred him up, pacing the room, clawing at the walls, but I’d take what I could get.

“Actually, it’s not that interesting. I was attacked by a tiger. He got a good chunk of meat from my leg, I had physical therapy for two years and a couple of really nasty scars, but otherwise, it was just like any other day.” Even the attack hadn’t been that extraordinary. He was hungry, I looked like lunch. No harm, no foul. I never hold anything against large predators; they’re just doing what instinct tells them.
