**My thoughts**
I'm a sucker for holiday stories, and especially ones that take place around the holidays. Even better, Pepper is the owner of a bakery. While this is a characteristic that you're going to find in countless books these days, it's still one that makes that character endearing to you. And Pepper really is someone you want to root for, especially when she is devastated after the loss of her bakery, her livelihood. 

Simon is the man with the looks and the money who is expected to swoop in and make it all better. And he really does try. There's just something about Pepper that he is completely attracted to. And that is even before he finds out she is carrying his baby.

The two of them had been friendly with each other after meeting several months before. They definitely had an attraction to one another, but had not yet gotten to the point where they were taking their relationship to the next level. Then as it happens, one night one thing led to another. And now they are going to be parents. 

They're still somewhat awkward around each other. After all, they hadn't seen each other for a while. And now they are being thrust together forever. They're still trying to get to know each other. And there is still a smidge of a flame of attraction between the two of them. Whereas they took things a little too fast before, this time around they are moving quite slowly and actually more as friends than anything more. But this is most important when trying to establish a relationship that is going to stand the test of time. So while you want them to make things work out, you still want them to do it right this time around. 

It took me a while to fall for them as a couple, because there was such a slow burn and that awkwardness between the two of them. But I did still root for them along the way. And as in all good romances, things start falling into place in the best of ways. I read through it in one evening.

**My thoughts**

Josie and Noah are going to his mother's house for dinner. When they arrive, they find her murdered in the backyard. Noah is obviously extremely distraught. Josie is torn between her duties as Noah's girlfriend and as a detective. She desperately wants to get to the bottom of this. She wants to help Noah. And of course, Noah's very pregnant sister is making everyone miserable.

The plot twists thicken as Colette's history is revealed, a history that her kids didn't even know. How is she involved with a bunch of unsolved disappearances? And why are more people being executed the deeper they dig into the past? You will likely even be surprised.

This installment of the series has even more twists and turns. And you feel even more emotion out of Josie than we have at all in the past. Having a boyfriend and a family is really loosening her up in the emotions department. I really enjoy seeing this new growth in her.

**My thoughts*

Imagine flying halfway across the world, only to find out that your internship no longer exists and your best friend conveniently "forgot" to tell you. I probably would pass out, too.

And thus being Lainey's rocky ride now in the Pet Food division at Alpine Foods, instead of the Chocolate division, which was her true passion and goal. But having Yves for a boss may not be the worst thing in the world.

You can tell that Yves is somewhat amused by the American's antics and foibles, which will make you both cringe and laugh all at once. I can't help but like her and relate to her. Although, I do not have quite the obsession with chocolate that she does. I mean, I like chocolate, but she takes it to a whole other level for sure.

Lainey also is terrifed of dogs after having been attacked several years ago. I also understand this fear, only my attack was much less than hers and didn't require several years of therapy. I also still had dogs throughout my ordeal.

I also love the setting. I spent a few days along Lake Geneva some years ago, so this brings back some fond memories for me. I also get a kick out of the sprinklings of French words and phrasings for which I do not need a translation. 

This story has the necessary ups and downs for such a formulaic feel-good story, and yet it is different enough from any other you may have read. I recommend having some chocolate on hand, with or without a glass of wine or your favorite alcoholic beverage as you consume this sweet treat.

She stared at the venetian blinds, blurred by tears, gripping the hospital bed rails. They should have been tears of joy. Her family should have been standing in the sparsely furnished room. Should have, would have, could have.

Suck it up, cupcake, she thought. She knew this day would come. She had to think about what was best for… for him. And once she had finally decided, even the excitement of her budding career had been overshadowed. She scanned the room through the blur, now void of the nurse who had taken pity on her solitude. The never-ending loop of self-recrimination flooded her brain yet again.

Funny, she thought she’d be over it by now, that somehow the loop would be flushed—like afterbirth. How could she have been so careless? Why hadn’t she focused on school instead of letting herself be attracted to Larry’s blue eyes? “When can I shower?” she asked, poking at the mashed potatoes.

“After this bag runs out I’ll take out the IV.”

Her nurse’s deep blue scrubs were adorned by a shiny chrome stethoscope. “Can I do anything else?” Her eyes betrayed the facade of pity for her situation. This may have been her first rodeo, but the nurse had seen too many of her situations. “No, I’m good. Well, not good. I mean, you’ve been wonderful,” she fumbled.

The nurse walked back to the door, patting her feet with a soft hand on the way. She felt the tears welling again. How she needed her sisters. But, no one could know. She needed to get back on track at work and put this behind her. How the hell do you put something like this behind you, she thought to herself. She suspected it would always haunt her. “Please, God, give me the peace I need. I hope you know I’m not heartless. This is for his future. I’m still a kid.”

There was another knock on the door. As the couple entered the room, he was carrying a fast-food bag, Taco Bell. She carried flowers. It had to be as awkward for them as it was for her. “You’re a lifesaver! I hope there are tacos in that bag,” she said, with as much bravado as she could muster. But she knew there was a deeper meaning to the first part of her comment.

“Did y’all finally decide on his name?” she asked.

**My thoughts**

This installment lets us get to know Lance and Mary. They have been hinted at in previous installments, but we really know very little about them.

Lance is Brady's brother. Mary's father is married to the former Mullen housekeeper and nanny, Flora, and always seemed to hate everyone. And somehow, the two of them had become friends and totally have the hots for each other.

But we finally get to know why Mary has such a hard shell covering her. And it is a true gut-punch. But she is still a paradox, as you feel sorry for her, and yet she plays a game that could easily backfire on her.

Because Mary is pregnant after their one and only encounter, Lance, true to Dog form, steps up to marry her. The claim is that it is for insurance, but really, it is so much more. He is determined to break through her shell and prove that she is in love with him.

I admit that this one is my least favorite of the series thus far. It is very hard for me to develop an attachment to Mary for now, because of her confusion, and some manipulation. And yet I feel sorry for her and hope that I will come around and see her more through Lance's eyes, along with others in Cliffside Bay.

I guarantee that this one will make you bawl like a baby. It also has a lot of wisdom in its quotes, which I love.

Colby Davidson, the K9 search and rescue deputy, is allowing her to accompany him while he’s on patrol at the Ridgeway Illumination Festival. Though they are just friends, she’s still hoping for a possible kiss at the end of the festivities.

When a stranger asks them to help take some pictures at the event, Emma and Colby are happy to oblige. **My thoughts**

This is the first story in the Ridgeway Rescue Mysteries. I read it in less than an hour.

Emma has a rescue S. Bernard named Molly and a huge crush on Colby, the K-9 detective attached to a dog named Gabby, and who also works for her father. The foursome gets together for the annual sign lighting on New Years Eve. A man joins them and keeps asking for them to take his picture as each part of the sigh is lit up. Once midnight hits, their mysteries new friend is a murder suspect.

Emma is permitted to assist a bit in the investigation because she is the sheriff's daughter. She is very observant and is quickly able to solve the murder.

This story is shorter than I usually like to read, but it is still fun. I have a feeling the series will ramp up as it continues.

**My thoughts**

Tulip, Star, and Charm are triplets who own the Tea & Tarot Cafe. Charm;s powers help her to help people find things. She is the one who tells the stories. Tulip is really excited about the upcoming marijuana legalization and wants to prepare for making laced goodies for their cafe. And Star is a singer. You can't help but like them and feel for them and Granny Toogood who raised them.

Charm meets a man named Ace early on in the story, when they run into a bear. It's almost symbolic of their relationship that you know is coming. I admit that I read the second book in this series before this one, so I have a bit of advance knowledge of what's to come. But I loved reading the story of how this threesome got started and the background of their lives.

In this one, a client is murdered and Charm's apricot jam is to blame. Her powers are just starting to appear, so she stars using them to help solve this murder to clear her own name. In some ways, it helps that she is also a big Agatha Christie fan, so she really feels like an amateur sleuth. 

This book, and the second one, are both fun and amusing reads. I love the antics of the sisters and all of the banter between them and the other characters. I look forward to continuing this series.

**My thoughts*

We already knew that Kyle was a wealthy, attractive playboy, and Violet was the hippie single mother who owned a struggling store. On paper, there is no way that these two should ever hook up. And yet we saw glimpses of that beloved enemies-to-friends trope being hinted at in previous books.

So Kyle finds out that his playboy ways have finally caught up to him. He had unknowingly fathered a child. But the baby's mother had unfortunately died from an infection soon after Mollie Blue's birth. He has to step up an be this baby's father. And though he is doomed to struggle, he is also destined to become one of the best fathers ever.

Violet gets involved because Honor knows that she would be the perfect person to teach Kyle how to care for a baby. Plus now that her store has closed, she needs money.

Inevitably, sharing the care of Baby Mollie Blue causes an impenetrable bond between the two to form. And of course, anyone would fall in love with Violet's precocious young son Dakota.

I love that we finally get to know more about both Kyle's and Violet's posts so that we can better understand them. We meet parts of their families, which helps to explain so much and also lays foundations for potential future stories.

They have both come so far in their lives, which just shows that determination can help you snap those horrid cycles.

We also get to know Mary a bit more, who happens to be the focus of Book 5.

Though this book primarily focuses on Violet and Kyle and their developing relationship, all of the other characters are still a vibrant part of the story. So often in series like this, once a couple is matched up and their initial story is told, they almost fall by the wayside with only slight mentions. But Tess keeps them all very active, engaged, and present, which I appreciate.

**My thoughts**

Right from the start, you are rooting for Josie to exonerate Gretchen. You just cannot believe that this detective, who has been so supportive of Josie, though quiet and secretive about her own past, could actually be guilty of such a heinous murder. Yes, she has disappeared, but you know she is doing it to help the truth come out.

The book alternates between horrific murders of the past as well as the current investigation into the murder of the young boy at Gretchen's house. You know they are all connected somehow, but can't quite put it together.

As usual, Lisa Regan keeps you guessing as the pages fly by. I keep staying up late to devour this series! Another solid 4.5 stars from me.
