**My thoughts**
This is the second book of Beth Carpenter's five-book Northern Lights series that I have read. Each title definitely works as a standalone and is unique to the featured couple. I'm attracted to the stories that take place up north.

This one starts out with a lot of drama that reminded me almost of a TV movie trying to catch your attention right off the bat. Volta works emergency medical cases, and they are transporting a pregnant woman about to give birth to twins, suffering from high blood pressure, to the hospital. Only the volcano has erupted, meaning they are going to have to do some improvisation and are temporarily stranded in the town. And who happens to be there for a medical study but Volta's ex-boyfriend Scott, the one who got away and shattered her heart into a million pieces many years ago.

I admit that all of this happening up front felt a little in my face at first and I was taken aback. But then as the story started to unfold, I grew more attached to finding out how this second chance romance was going to play out. And of course when you are up in Alaska, a lot of these types of medical emergencies and natural incidents are going to play out. It's just not something I am as familiar with in New York.

Volta and Scott have never quite gotten over each other, though there was good reason for them to part. Each one of them has gone on to do amazing things with their lives. And you are definitely not the same person that you were 10 years ago. People grow and change and their dreams and goals also evolve. Volta is adamant about protecting her own heart, as well as that of her darling daughter. Scott is struggling to admit he needs a change in his life. And you find yourself rooting for them to work it all out, in spite of people who stand in their way. (I'm looking at you, Stacy, aka Volta's sister-in-law, who just needs a kick in the arse.)

It's another enjoyable read, that I'm giving 3.5 stars to this time around. I still want to read more in the series and by Beth Carpenter in general.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and gave a voluntary and honest review. I was not required to give a positive review.

About the Author

Once upon a time ...

when Beth Carpenter was a little girl, she read everything she could get her hands on, and entertained herself on the school bus by making up stories in her head. Not a lot has changed. She's still consuming books like M&Ms, and spends her days creating happily-ever-afters for her imaginary friends.

She lives in Alaska and Arizona with her husband and an aggressively affectionate fifty-pound lap dog. She loves to hear from readers.
