She thought she’d met the man of her dreams. She couldn’t have been more wrong.

His letters had won her heart. Leaving everything behind, Lisa Hanlon is ready to start a new life in the West. Sheriff Donald Skroch is attractive, influential, and eager to wed his mail-order bride. Shortly after arriving in Tate City, Lisa discovers that he's also short-tempered, violent and possessive…and she’s soon fleeing for California, desperate to escape the man she’s promised to marry.

Arriving at a broken-down ranch in the middle of nowhere, Lisa is only seeking a place to hide. She’s dismayed to discover a rugged drifter, Pearce Folsom, in one of the outbuildings. Burdened with secrets of his own, Pearce hides the truth of his past but not his attraction to Lisa. When he steals a burning kiss during the middle of a midnight storm, Lisa knows this handsome cowboy wants more from her than she is ready to give. She can’t truly offer her heart until she is finally and forever free from Donald.

Then, one terrible day, a telegram arrives: FOUND YOU.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“So you’re a mail-order bride?”

The question sent a shock through her body. “How did you know?”

“No other explanation for it. How else would a prairie dog like Ted have found someone like you?”

What is that supposed to mean?, Lisa wondered. Then it came to her: Pearce doesn’t know about Uncle’s death. Despite our age difference, he thinks Ted – he thinks Ted and I…

Outside, the storm was starting to lighten. Its drumming force was now light enough that she could lower her voice and still be understood. She said, “I think you’re confused.”

“I’ve been riding these parts for the last two years. If there was anyone like you in the vicinity, I’d have noticed.”

Despite his weariness, she couldn’t help but respond to his rugged attractiveness. “Well, thank you.”

He moved closer to her. “Don’t I get to kiss the bride?”

He leaned over to kiss her cheek. Startled by the boldness of his action, Lisa turned her head to protest. When she did, his lips brushed against hers. He pressed against her.

As their mouths touched, she felt a rush of heat burn through her body, unlike anything she’d ever experienced before. Need and desire took her by surprise.

This wasn’t anything like the kisses she’d received in the past. Nothing like what she’d experienced when she’d first been courted; much more rich and arousing than any of the kisses she’d ever shared with Donald.

The derringer started to slip from her hand, catching her attention as its grip rubbed across her fingers. What’s wrong with me? she thought. I don’t know this man!

The Aztec demon is unleashed. The green bottle is his “trick.” They’re his bait.
When a group of friends decide to take a break for the night, pitching camp around a crackling fire, their team leader sees a creepy green bottle embedded in the ground. It looks ancient. He pulls it out, deciding to use it as a “spinner.”
And so, they all take turns to tell their tale, unaware that within this bottle abides an ancient creepy Aztec demon spirit, vowing to teach them all a lesson; one they will never forget.
Will they make it through the night? Or will the forces of evil prevail?

EXCERPT

The kitchen curtains were never drawn. They projected silvery moonlight onto Tom’s face. Tonight he was restless. He opened the fridge door and rooted around inside. His eyes lit up when he found a wine bottle.

“Caaw...Caaw.”

“What the hell!” He shuffled to his feet and plodded to the window. The crow still sat perched on the ashes of her love letters. As long as it stayed put, Tom didn’t mind the old crow. But wasn’t it odd that a stuffy old bird, black as night, should sit in solitude, cawing every night.

“Mother would have shot you. That’s why I won’t.”

Returning to the fridge, he uncorked the bottle with his long fingernails. It dripped all over his chest. But what he saw was not wine. It was blood.

“All right, Tom, take it easy old boy. You’re still under shock. That romantic old fluff is taunting you. Go back to bed quietly.”

Consoling himself, he lay down, humming.

 “Caaw! Caaw!” It was the old crow.

Tom shuffled to his feet again, upset. His stomach stiffened and a jet of blood trickled from his belly-button. “W-what’s happening? Am I cracking?”

It was 6:30 a.m. The dimming moonlight tempted Tom to peer outside to get a better look at the crow; that was not difficult. The darn thing never moved an inch. But why was it perched there, on her love letters?

“It’s not there. It’s...not there!” Now Tom really was scared. Overcome with giddiness, he fought back. “M-must...resist...mustn’t fall down.”

But the forces of evil were bent on destruction tonight of all nights. Nine days since the night. Nine days since his mother vowed to come back for her beloved son. It was then that the crow appeared before him...and for the first time, revealed its putrefied face.

“Nighty night, Tom.”

Tom screamed until the crow’s sharp beak tore at his throat, cutting off his cries.

The Thin Veil Series by Jodi McIsaac

THE THIN VEIL SERIES
by Jodi McIsaac

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THROUGH THE DOOR (Book #1)
It’s been seven years since the love of Cedar McLeod’s life left with no forwarding address. All she has left of him are heart-wrenching memories of happier times and a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Eden. Then, one day, Eden opens her bedroom door and unwittingly creates a portal that leads to anywhere she imagines.
But they’re not the only ones who know of Eden’s gift, and soon the child mysteriously vanishes.
Desperate for answers, Cedar digs into the past and finds herself thrust into a magical world of Celtic myths, fantastical creatures, and bloody rivalries. Teaming up with the unlikeliest of allies, Cedar must bridge the gap between two worlds and hold tight to the love in her heart…or lose everything to an ancient evil.
The first in the Thin Veil series, Through the Door is a pulse-pounding adventure that takes readers across the globe and deep into the hidden realms of Celtic lore.
Read an excerpt:
“Shh, it’s okay,” Cedar said, rubbing Eden’s back. Tears were pricking at her own eyes, but she tried to hold them back. “Your father was a really good person.”
“But why isn’t he here?” Eden sniffed.
Cedar took a deep breath to steady her voice. “I don’t know, to be honest. I wish I did. He went away before he knew I was pregnant. He didn’t leave because of you, Eden. That’s really important for you to understand. When you came along, I tried to find him. But I couldn’t. I’m sorry.”
Eden pulled away, her face twisted. “It’s not fair!” Cedar tried to hug her again, but Eden yanked herself free and stormed down the hall. Cedar stood and watched her disappear around the corner. She’d give her a few minutes of alone time, and then go talk to her again. She listened for the inevitable slamming of Eden’s door. It didn’t come. Instead, Eden’s screams died off as suddenly as if she had run out of air. The apartment fell silent, a sharp contrast to the storm of six-year-old anger that had been raging only moments before.
“Eden?” Cedar called out. Nothing. “Eden?” she tried again, starting to walk down the hall.
“Mummy? Mummy!” came Eden’s voice.
Cedar quickly rounded the corner and saw Eden standing in the hallway outside her bedroom, staring open-mouthed through the gaping doorway. There was some sort of light reflecting on her face. It glimmered and shifted and created strange shapes and lines on her skin, casting her in an otherworldly glow. A slight breeze was lifting the edges of her sundress, brushing it against her legs. A small trail of fine sand crept through the doorway and was starting to collect around her feet.
“What is it, Eden?” Cedar asked as she moved to stand beside her daughter. Then her jaw dropped. “What the…?”
The two of them stood in shocked silence, looking into the room. The air in the open doorway was sparkling with a thousand points of light, like the surface of a pond catching the mid-afternoon sun. They could still see what was on the other side, but through a film. In this case, the film glittered and moved. Even more remarkable than the way the air had changed in the doorway was what was on the other side.
INTO THE FIRE (Book #2)
Cedar McLeod would like nothing more than to return to Tír na nÓg, help rebuild the mythical kingdom, and start a new life for herself and her daughter, Eden. But peace isn’t what Cedar finds after being reunited with her little girl.
Nuala—who kidnapped and terrorized Eden in her previous bid for power—has returned and is making a persuasive claim for the vacant throne. The devastation such a ruler would bring upon both the kingdom and the human world is unthinkable. With no one else to stake a convincing counter-claim, Cedar steps forward...but first she must prove her worth beyond a doubt.
Her opportunity comes when she is charged with finding an ancient treasure, the Stone of Destiny, and returning it to its rightful home. It is a quest that will lead her to question her beliefs, and push her loyalties to their limits. If she succeeds, Cedar could grant her new world and her new family a chance to flourish again. If not...destruction may be the only path ahead.
Into the Fire, the second book in the Thin Veil series, is a captivating blend of Celtic myth, mystery, and adventure that delves deeper into the ancient world first explored in Through the Door.
AMONG THE UNSEEN (Book #3)
Life just keeps getting more complicated for Cedar McLeod. As the recently crowned queen of Tír na nÓg, she’s trying to understand her magical new kingdom, even as she misses her life back on Earth. It doesn’t help that a dear friend has just betrayed her—a betrayal that almost cost Cedar and her family their lives. And things aren’t easy at home, either, as Cedar’s seven-year-old daughter, Eden, lost and lonely in Tír na nÓg despite her special powers, has become painfully distant.
Cedar vows to do whatever it takes to protect her family once and for all, and starts rounding up those who plotted against her. But then a new disaster breaks out: a mysterious sickness is plaguing the Unseen, Ireland’s magical creatures, including those Cedar knows and loves. With enemies still on the loose and not knowing whom she can trust, Cedar must race against time to reverse an ancient curse, in a journey that will take her from Tír na nÓg to Earth…and beyond.
Brimming with page-turning adventure, Among the Unseen—the exciting conclusion to Jodi McIsaac’s Thin Veil trilogy—weaves an enchanting, captivating spell.
Meet J.P. Herman, author of 'Dreams Worth Dying For'
About the author:
J.P. Herman won more than 40 regional, state and national awards as a reporter before being appointed top editor of the Traverse City (MI) Record-Eagle at the age of 29. He later served as a corporate news executive in New York and in various editing roles at newspapers in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and New York. He was elected to the board of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and served several times as a Pulitzer Prize juror at Columbia University in New York City. An honors graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, J.P., his wife and family live in upstate New York. They spend summers in a small Michigan town on the shores of Lake Huron. J.P. is a prolific songwriter, having penned melodies and lyrics to more than 200 songs.
What was the inspiration for DREAMS WORTH DYING FOR?
I spent too much of my time as a journalist in the role of editor, or manager. Looking back, I wish I had spent my whole career as a reporter/writer. I think I would have enjoyed that more. Now that I'm retired, I am experimenting with various writing forms. It's all-consuming and I love it. Fiction is as far as you can get from the "facts-only" journalism I practiced for more than three decades.
Which character spoke to you the most during the writing process?
Dr. Susan Jacoby. Her uncompromising demands and lofty standards made love the precious commodity it deserves to be.
What is one of your favorite scenes?
Andy Pettigrew's first encounter with Rueben Ortega at dawn in the Florida Keys. This was the first time Andy realized he was beginning the transformation he'd dreamed of for so many years.
Andy and Susan dancing gleefully into the unknown.
Will we ever see these characters again?
It might be interesting to find out where they go and what they do.
On what other projects are you currently working?
I continue to write songs during book-writing breaks. Picking the guitar and singing my own words is soothing. It helps me put things in perspective. For me, a productive day is writing something worth keeping. That can be anything from a sentence to a chapter to a song.
Do you ever miss the newspaper business?
I desperately miss what the newspaper business used to be. TV jabber and online's lack of standards tend to confuse than enlighten viewers/readers. I worry about how this lack of what we used to call watchdog journalism might undermine our democracy. Access to balanced information seems necessary for people to govern themselves in a responsible manner.
Would we know any of your songs?
Like Andy, I write songs for my own satisfaction. Andy explains why in the book.
You have been a juror for the highly coveted Pulitzer Prize. What does that entail?
Being a Pulitzer Prize judge was one of the high points of my career. I was given time to read some of the best stories of the day, written by people who are now legendary. I savor those memories. It was all about excellence in reporting and writing and the discussions were spirited and illuminating.
You live in Upstate NY and vacation in Northern Michigan. What are some of your must-see destinations in these areas?
Wherever I go, I hook up on dates with Mother Nature. I'd rather sit in a remote woods and listen to the chatter of the birds and critters than board a cruise ship en route to the Bahamas. I'm happy to say that natural wonders abound near both of my homes.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
My goal was to raise questions rather than try to impose my beliefs on others. I like to encourage people to consider a wide range of possibilities before drawing a conclusion.
Thank you so much for your time!
The Impact of the 1960s on Belinda Stevens, author of 'Just Out of Reach'
Impact Of The 1960s On Me And My Life
I think any era in which an individual matures has a deep effect on them. The times in which you are developing and learning about the world are memorable and indelibly inked into your psyche. The 1960s were some of the most turbulent and transformative in the history of America.
For me, it began with John F. Kennedy's acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic convention. My father encouraged me to watch the 1960 convention because me wanted me to take an interest in the political process. At first, I was bored by the endless bombastic speeches and the fat, bald men that gave them. Then I saw John Kennedy walking to the podium to give his acceptance speech as the Democratic nominee for President. He looked more like a movie star than a politician. Suddenly I wasn't bored anymore.
As I listened, I realized I liked the way he spoke. Then I realized I like what he was saying. His ideals inspired me. I felt a pride as a young American and a desire to some how contribute to my community, state, and nation. With J.F.K. in the White House, I believed that all things were possible, if you worked hard enough.
There were others who inspired and motivated during those years - Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy to name a few. There were books that radically changed my outlook - The Diary Of Anne Frank and a little book called Black Like Me, which told the story of a white journalist who darkened his skin to discover what it was like to be a black man in the South. The music of the 60s fit right in with the changing times and I loved it--everything from Motown to the Beatles. At the beginning of the 60s, all I wanted was to get married and have children. By the end of the 60s, I still wanted those things and more. I wanted to make my mark on the world, to make a contribution, to serve others in some way.
Just Out of Reach
by Belinda Stevens
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When high school freshman Katherine Boyd meets David, her life is forever altered. Their romance experiences the turmoil of Mississippi in the sixties, family relationships that keep them apart, and political differences that threaten to destroy them. Through the death of JFK and James Meredith s admission to Ole Miss, Katherine s growth means being progressive in a traditional Southern family, accepting the loss of those closest to her, and learning to cope with her family s darkest secrets. Just Out of Reach is the story of a young woman forged in desperate times and a love that changes her life forever.

Read an excerpt:
We were at Angie's, a local eatery specializing in fried shrimp and lemon ice-box pie. Despite the jukebox, a concession to those under eighteen, Angie’s was more upscale than the Blue Bird Diner or the local drive-in. The restaurant was populated with round tables covered in satin tablecloths. The walls were painted a light-colored mauve, and small decorative lamps were placed on each table. Oil paintings and watercolors by local artists adorned the center wall of the restaurant, an innovation ahead of its time but very popular. After we were seated, I began talking about the President, something I did a lot of in those days. Little Richard was blaring on the jukebox, and I was shouting to be heard over the music.

“With John Kennedy in the White House, anything’s possible,” I screamed.

“You idolize him, don’t you?”
“Yes, I guess I do,” I answered, dipping my shrimp in the remoulade sauce. “He’s so handsome. It’s nice to have a cute President,” I giggled,” Not like bald-headed Ike!”

David rolled his eyes.

“But seriously,” I continued. “President Kennedy makes me believe everyone can make a difference. You know, change things, real peace and people living together without hating each other.”

“Katie, is that realistic?”

“I don’t know, it...” I stopped midsentence. I felt cold; a shudder ran through me.

David looked puzzled and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“I feel like someone’s walking over my grave.”

Review of 'Words: Spoken and Unspoken Forces' by Anita Saleem

WordsBanner

WORDS Cover Version 04_1400x2100Words: Spoken and Unspoken Forces provides the key to understanding the secret power of words and traces how this power is activated by drawing references from various authors and experts in psychology, philosophy, medicine, and semiotics.

The author presents a theoretical model to understand why words affect individuals by suggesting that words color emotions, shape behaviors, and influence physiological functioning to create an overall impact (whether positive or negative). Drawing upon several scientific studies, this book will help the reader understand why words are spoken and unspoken forces that have the potential to shape the future.

**My thoughts**

My inner nerd was in seventh heaven with this book. I am always talking to people about the power of words. I try to be careful when choosing mine, because semantics matter. Just because two words have similar definitions or are synonyms doesn't mean that one word isn't better than the other.

I have personally witnessed the power of words in healing or harming the sick and dying. I remember telling doctors, nurses, friends, and family members that I would not discuss my father's condition near him, even when he was in a coma. I didn't want him to hear any negatives. Saleem backs up this idea, and many others, with a plethora of research studies.

I teach young children, so I see on a daily basis how my words can deeply affect a little one's psyche or quickly cause a misunderstanding. I can build him up or tear her down in a heartbeat. I prefer to do the former.

I was intrigued by the mix of science, religion, psychology, and philosophy, all rolled into one book. Saleem uses published research studies along with the beliefs of several religious groups to demonstrate how the power of words has been studied and used for centuries. She discusses Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which I believe is a powerful tool for helping people to change their outlook on life. All of this is done in a manner that is easy to read and is very interesting, while also demonstrating some extensive research on her part. If I were teaching in older grades, I would definitely be having my students read this! For the rest of us, I recommend this as a launchpad for starting to reshape your own thoughts and life.

Lawrence Kelter, author of 'Baby Girl Doe (A Stephanie Chalice Thriller)' on boxed sets

The Perfect Ten. The Deadly Dozen. Thrilling Thirteen. Where will it end?

You know where I’m going with this—in the world of e-book publishing 2014 is now officially the year of the boxed set. Solo novelists with large book catalogues and syndicates of like-minded scribes are jumping on the boxed set bandwagon faster than Wile E. Coyote can outrun a cloud of Acme buckshot.

It’s no secret that success the indie book biz is getting tougher and tougher. With the list of new book titles growing faster than Jack’s beanstalk, a plethora of free reads, and the guerilla marketing tactics of newly-savvy legacy publishers it’s become darn near impossible for an honest, hardworking Joe to make a go of it.

I must confess that I too succumbed to the market-share-capturing allure of boxed set mania. Bargain-priced boxed sets are selling like hotcakes at a Vermont maple syrup fair. When the Deadly Dozen hit the highly coveted NY Times Bestseller List, indie authors from all genres began throwing in together. And the indie masses roared, “Game on! This is a kickass idea.”

Or is it?

Through the miracle of the boxed set many authors are reaching thousands of readers they would never have had access to on their own, but is helping or hurting them? No one is getting rich when a $0.35 royalty is divvied up twelve ways, and as far as I can see there’s no real indication that contributing authors are selling more of their standalone titles than they did before … and they may possibly be selling less because every Kindle, Nook, and i-Pad from Maine to Kilimanjaro is crammed to the rafters with free and bargain-boxed books. And it’s only because Amazon limits the $.99 file size to 3 GBs that uber-collections with names like The Homicide One Hundred will never see light of day.

So who wins?

Well consumers for sure—they’re laughing all the way back to their respective banks, but what does this portend for the future of the industry? Think about that one. I could go on forever but as I look backstage I see the hook coming out and so in the immortal words of Snaggelpuss I will “exit stage left.”

Dramatic

I zigzagged between the two opposing lanes of traffic as I gave pursuit.

He was in a flat-out run, but I was not going to be beaten. Not now, not with Gus’ captor in sight. I reached down deep and found an extra gear, one that I didn’t know existed. I was running so fast, I felt as if I could take off. I was closing in on him: two yards behind . . . one . . .

I lunged and took him down by the ankles. As he attempted to kick free, I pounced upon him, fists flying. I hauled back and was ready to pummel him when I froze. "You? It’s you?” The face I was about to strike was one I had seen before, but looked nothing like the person I had seen on the ladder outside my bedroom window. This man was the one who told me there was absolutely nothing suspicious about the fire the day I first inspected the remains of Bill Alden’s cottage. Two bodies, burnt beyond recognition—now I understood who would use that specific MO. Dummy, you couldn’t make the connection?
“You son of a bitch.” I heard the sound of others running toward me, but my fist was clenched.

“Chalice, we’ve got him,” Ambler said. “Don’t!”

There was no force on heaven or earth strong enough to keep me from striking him, this man who had turned my family’s world upside down and put my husband’s life at risk. I drove my fist into his jaw and heard it crack. I was ready to hit him again when someone grabbed my arm. I looked up and saw Gus. His cheek was swollen, and there was dried blood on his face.

“Thanks, babe,” he said, “I’ll take it from here.”

How getting away helps J.P. Herman, author of 'Dreams Worth Dying For'

How "getting away" helps writing

Going from a metropolitan area to a remote, rural setting dramatically affects how I see things. When I'm in the city, I spend a good share of my free time observing people. They are everywhere, and they come in a wide range of colors, sizes and attitudes. When I'm at my summer home, introspection usually fills that space in my head. I have to rely on my imagination more in "the sticks," and that's just fine with me. I also enjoy the company of Mother Nature more when She's my only companion within miles.

Wealthy Madison Avenue advertising executive Andy Pettigrew's recurring dreams of inner peace and contentment center on his desperate need to love and be loved. Middle-aged and divorced, Andy laments the fact that his heart is as empty as his bank accounts are full. Dying to change things, he sets out to balance the books, eagerly boarding his vintage red and white Corvette convertible for the ride of a lifetime. What follows is an account of Andy's adventurous transformation from reality to make-believe and back again. Co-stars include a beautiful woman named Dr. Susan Jacoby, some well-known Key West spirits, a smattering of Great Lakes ghosts and an angel or two.

'He Found Me' by Whitney Barnetti Release Day Blitz!

He Found Me
By- Whitney Barbetti

Publication Date- May 29, 2014

When I was seventeen, I disappeared. I walked out the door of my apartment with a backpack and never looked back. I left the life of Cora Mitchell behind, seeking freedom from my real-life nightmare.

But my freedom came with a cost. I lived a fictitious life for the next six years, never letting anyone close enough to see underneath the façade that was Andra Walker.

I was content with my simple little life.

Until I met Julian.

And the moment I started allowing myself to open up, allowing someone to see through the superficial, was the very same moment the Monster from my past would return to find me.
