Triangle of Hope by Michael Meyer

If one person can make a difference, just think what three can do. A tender story of love. Three strangers, each harboring a dark secret, become united by chance in a small Irish village, and the wonderful power of the human spirit comes alive.

If you believe that love and romance can happen in unusual circumstances, then this book is for you.

"If an author can make you cry for his characters then want to hug them close and then want to do an Irish jig with them to celebrate overcoming that much pain, then you know you have read a book that will stay with you forever." - Wanda Hartzenberg, Wanda's Amazing Amazon Reviewers

It is a "fantastic read that will pull at your heart." - Lauren Alumbaugh, Goodreads librarian

Read an excerpt:

His impending death hung in the air like thick smog, smothering everything in its path, obscuring a parade of ups and downs, the unevenness of thrills and chills that defined his life’s existence. It was eerie and scary, but also rather comforting, much like being in a warm bed on a cold night, like shivering while being filled with excitement at what was going to happen next. The news could very easily have been broadcast to those of his past and present, but he had made certain that all the speakers had been turned to mute. He had made the firm decision to meet his destiny without any chance of intervention by anyone. He was all alone in this, his final act.

The hotel room was a bit dark with all the lights switched off, but outside the window the sky was as bright blue as Cinnamon’s eyes had been. At least that’s the way it looked to Clint Westerly. For some reason his mind had suddenly flashed on Cinnamon of all things. Cinnamon had been the perfect cat. Paul Newman eyes, he had called them, which sparkled in the sunlight and glistened in the dark. Such beautiful eyes. Such a wonderful cat. Such a pity that eighteen years was all the time he had had to frolic through the world. Cinnamon had been the perfect cat, the perfect companion. The little cat had been much more than a friend. He had actually been like a son to both him and Sheila. Anybody who knew them would surely concur. That’s just the way things were in their wonderful world.

Their world. What a crock! What world? Everything gone now, vanished, disintegrated into thin air, the tiniest particles vaporized into non-existence. Not a remnant remaining except for the tortured thoughts brought about by that one memory that refused to disappear no matter how painfully the ever increasing toll that it took on his physical body and on his ever working brain, overwhelming him in the process, the remembrance bringing him to his knees, shutting out all other thoughts as well as the rest of the world. Darkness and clouds made up the present, and there would be no future. How could there be? Not with the ever painful memory tearing at his innards, wreaking havoc with the person he had once been. Obliterating the world he had once known. Snuffing out all that he had loved, all that had made up the world in which he had once so happily lived.

He took a big swig from the large snifter of XO Remy Martin he held in his right hand, the cognac warming his throat as it snaked its way into his stomach, his left hand resting on the windowsill. There was so much beauty in the world. Just look at the trees gently blowing in the breeze. Look at how the leaves seem to glisten as they sway in the gentle breeze. See how the clouds out on the horizon take on the never-ending shapes of the imagination, slowly changing shapes and colors in an endless kaleidoscope of wondrous features, a galloping antelope, a smiling child, a mighty elm. All one had to do is look, and wonderful scenes could be seen and imagined, constantly evolving from one glorious image to the next.

Remember the giggles of little tots’ faces, the tail wagging of puppies, the sound of rain on the roof, the softness of a newly made bed, the warmth of a fire on a winter night, the smell of coffee in the morning, the moonlit sky, a beautiful sunset, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the first gulp of water on a thirsty day, the move-it-forward power of a smile from a total stranger.

Yes, life could be so good…so why did it have to end this way?

He has resided in and has visited many places in the world, all of which have contributed in some way to his own published writing. He has literally traveled throughout the world, on numerous occasions. He has lived in Finland, Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Among the many unique things that have happened to him in his world travels, he has walked the streets of Istanbul with a detective, searching for a pickpocket who got him good. He has ridden on the back of a motorcycle in Tehran while the driver, who spoke not one word of English, pointed out all the sights to him. He has wrestled an Iranian soldier who tried to break into his hotel room in Tehran. He has had the paint completely stripped from his car as he drove across Saudi Arabia in a sandstorm. He has stood on the stage of a busy nightclub in Tokyo, singing "She'll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes" to an audience feeling no pain from the Sake they were drinking. He has been chased by a family of mongooses (yes, that is the correct spelling) on the idyllic Caribbean island of St. Croix. And that is just the beginning of his long list of worldly adventures.

As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, he now lives in Southern California wine country with his wife, Kitty, and their two adorable rescue cats.

Phoebe (The Flagstaff Reunion) by Susan Wuthrich

When Phoebe O’Flannigan turns up at The Flagstaff Reunion and accuses three former pupils of sexually assaulting her nineteen years before, it rakes up foggy memories of a wild teenage party; one they’d rather forget.

The men are arrested and charged with rape. Brandon Foster, one of the accused, is horrified to learn his friends have turned against him and are letting him take the fall. Amid denial and recriminations friendships fall apart and the sordid allegation puts Brandon’s fragile marriage on the line.

The bullying and humiliation Phoebe suffered at the exclusive school was real. But is she stretching the truth? She knew to achieve her goal, drastic measures would be required. But because of the time lapse, is it too late to turn the tables on those who treated her so despicably?

So, what really happened that night and why has it taken her almost twenty years to come forward?

A gripping saga full of suspense and intrigue.

Starting over is hard enough but when ghosts decide to hitch a ride into the future—things can get complicated.

Widowed Vivi leaves California for a new start back east landing in a college town near her old friend Vikram, now the local ‘spiritual’ leader and disappointing lover. But the two have old business which leads them to uncovering the ghosts they conjured long before and the ones that are haunting them now. Vivi reclaims her life, -- with the help of a couple different dimensions-- saying hi to the ghosts who choose to hang around, and growing a new garden and a new life.

Read an excerpt:
They have settled into their chairs and Tara is tossing some cards, shuffling them and getting a feel. She flips over three cards.

“Oh, my dear. Some bleak times, past, yes?”

Vivi is startled by this pronouncement. “Well, it’s been a time of change, I’d say.”

“Change?” says Tara. “You betcha. This Tower card is about the whole thing coming crashing down. But it’s in the past position. See here? This is the present,” she shows Vivi the 7 of cups. It’s a picture of a man taking a look at a whole gallery of possibilities. “Look at him”, Tara says. “He’s got lots of things to choose from.”

“Well, that sounds good,” says Vivi tentatively.

“Not bad. Don’t get over infatuated with the possibilities. And the last one… here. The Hermit. Yep.”

“What’s that mean?”

“Oh it’s fine. Just a time to go inside and let things percolate. Inner wisdom and all that. Not a bad sentence!” Tara laughs again. “Now. Anything specific on your mind?” Tara continues to flip cards. “So,” she says. “Who is this guy? This King keeps showing up. King of Cups? He fell out of the deck twice while I was shuffling. “Who is this guy who won’t leave you alone?”

Vivi is mystified. “How did you…?’

“Oh, it’s not magic. The cards just know, that’s all. They pick up what you bring. Who is this guy?”

DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WRITER….. OR THIS WRITER.

Well, sometimes I wish I was a snappier writer, a snappier person. But I’m not.

I lived in the land of Let’s Make a Deal for too long and saw what so many writers looked like; tongues hanging out, eyes glazed from being put in ”turnaround”, the specter of the next sale leading them forward like dogs panting after bones. Sorry, it’s just not for me.

I’m an old fashioned type. I’m an artist. Not an entertainer and not a content provider. This may damn me to the nether regions of popularity, commercial fame and reward, but there’s just no other honest way I can move ahead. I write what I feel no one else is seeing, what no one else with my point of view really sees.

There are certain stories we have been given to write, to tell, to embody. We need to figure out how to do that. Maybe it’s in genre fiction, maybe it’s in poetry or maybe it’s in a secret journal that never sees the light of day. That’s what I do most days. I ponder how I tell the story that has been given to me.

I believe the process of writing a book, or anything really, is what changes the writer, and the eventual reader, as well. The real clear energetic brought down to create a book, or any work of art, is weird alchemy but, it’s what is really real and truly true.

My day as a writer is scooping up what comes down through my brain, through my fingers and my heart onto the page. It changes me. And if it changes you, the reader, the bonus is so much more grand.

Call me a hunter- gatherer. That’s what I do with my days. I hunt, gather and archive what the Universe has given me that day, to translate, soften, polish and make beautiful. And drink lots of tea and don’t walk around the block often enough.

Two strangers on the same path.
Survivors. Companions.
They will be each other’s salvation.

On a rainy, winter night, a mysterious woman in a red dress seeking shelter comes inside the restaurant Kabir was busy working in —primarily the bar— and night after night, drink after drink, she comes back to the same spot. That is where he sees her for the first time.

Hundreds of patrons around her try to speak with her daily, but she dismisses them. It appears she wants to remain in a blissful peace alone with her booze and books. After seeing the mysterious woman reading a book, and because of his shy nature, Kabir gains entrance into her life by anonymously leaving books with notes for her.

The Name of Red is the story of two strangers, two different personalities who meet on a winter, rainy night who challenge each other. They have a connection which blossoms into a friendship due to their fondness of books. But they both have secrets that can bind them together or threaten their newfound relationship forever.

Read an excerpt:
The bartender placed her drink, in front of her.

She eyed the amber liquid and the golden glow of the glass-like cubes in her cocktail. Sometimes, she ordered whiskey mixed with vodka because she liked the amber color, otherwise she preferred vodka. The bartender called it New York Whisk. She was entranced by the mini icebergs in the glass. She reached for her drink with her slim, long fingers.

Alcohol.

The elixir of her life.

The strong tonic was the only cure to her life. She lifted the drink to her lips, and the taste burned her tongue and throat.

Music Playlist for Presenting the Marriage of Kelli-Anne & Gerry Denemer by P.D. Alleva

Music is the soundtrack to our lives. We rely on it to help set the mood in movies and on TV shows. Soemtimes authors use it to help inspire the writing of a book, or find that certain songs just fit in well with their story. Today, author P.D. Alleva shares the music he associates with his book Presenting the Marriage of Kelli-Anne & Gerri Denemer, plus a sneak peek into some future works. Let him know what you think in the comments. Then follow the tour for more fun with this book and more chances to enter the giveaway.

Please note that affiliate links are present in this post. Should you make a purchase through one, I may earn a small commission to help support my websites at no additional cost to you.

*****************************

Music drives the emotion needed to deliver the message of the story. I call it getting into character. Presenting the Marriage required a deep trance of sadness, heartbreak, universal contemplation and ultimately inspiration. The songs listed below were the driving force behind the story. I could go a few days listening to just one song and switch it up as the story progressed. I don’t choose the songs before beginning to write, I believe they are already a part of it, usually finding their way in as I’m driving with the radio on or maintaining an open ear throughout the day. Sometimes it's just one line in the song that satisfies the emotion needed for a particular scene, sometimes it’s the instrumentals.

Nothing Compares To You (Chris Cornell acoustic version): Listed first for many reasons, most importantly Chris Cornell himself whose life ended tragically. In the book, Gerri hangs himself, but his suicide is prevented by a voice in his smart TV that opens a dimension where Gerri is forced to face his past. I’ve dealt a lot with suicide during my career as a psychotherapist and the impact felt by the people left behind to mourn their loss. The story takes this impact into account when Kelli is confronted by the future of her children. Also, the lyric “Where did I go wrong,” beautifuly belted out by Chris (and Sinead O’Connor in the original version of the song), was used in the story when Gerri is trying to get back into his house. Lyrics were written by Prince, another tragic story, so this song really rang through on multiple levels.

Purple Rain (Adam Levine @ Howard Stern Birthday Bash): Another Prince song and Adam Levine shows off his guitar prowess in this version. The book is about intimate relationships and undying love, and although the lyrics don’t 100% match the story, it’s the guitar solo that drove home the emotion.

Halleujah (all versions): I’ve listened to every version of this song probably 100 times each, gearing up for writing the ending and as the ending unfolded. Love is beautiful, the best of all human experience (my opinion at least), but there’s that other side to it, the heartbreak, loss and cold blood running through your veins when all you want is to be warm and joyful. But love is worth fighting for and the pain it causes is worth the horror. We find light in expressing love and discover beauty the world over when we’ve captured it in our palms. Love can deliver us from any darkness. I used the song’s title several times in the story, I hope I paid the song justice. “It’s not a cry that you hear at night, it’s not somebody who’s seen the light, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Halleujah!” Fantastic Lyric.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles): The original title for the book was “Gently Weeping.” I’m a huge Beatles fan, and George Harrison is my favorite Beatle. The mix of lyrics and guitar (seriously if you’re giving your song the title, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, you better make that guitar weep) is paramount, philosophical, heartfelt and down right impactful. Looking at the world turning as love sleeps and that guitar, that guitar sends waves through your bones. Magnificent!!!

In addition to the above my playlist included a lot of 70’s and 80’s love songs, really anything that would remind me of my wife.

*******************************

I’m currently writing book four in the series, The Rose. It’s a dystopian sci-fi set at the tail end of World War III. The rose is a meditation used by alchemists. Alchemy is the ability to transform chemical structures. Also a useful tool when battling alien vampires. The Rose is a prelude to a trilogy titled The Indigo Trials which will be released next year. After The Rose, I’ll be writing book four in this series, about a 1940’s New York socialite whose sculpture comes to life after a break up with the love of her life. Think Frankenstein meets My Fair Lady. Title is Golem, a psychological supernatural thriller. I have nine books planned in the Beyond the Chamber Door Series.

Presenting the Marriage of Kelli-Anne & Gerry Denemer

The Denemer's had it all: Fame, fortune, family, and the American Dream. But tough times have landed on their doorstep— Gerri's acting career is mired in controversy, financial decline is strangling the family bond, and his marriage to Kelli Anne is on the rocks. He'd rather die than face another catastrophe, something the Devil is more than eager to assist. On the night Gerri attempts to end his suffering, his plan is thwarted by a voice in his smart TV, pulling him into a dimension where past, present, and future collide, and the fate of the human race hangs in the balance. But Gerri is not alone. The Devil's minions are nipping at his heels and Kelli is right behind them, determined to save her family and put right what has gone wrong. Will they be successful? Is the bond between husband and wife strong enough to defeat evil? Will they prevent World War III or will evil's plan triumph? Presenting the Marriage of Kelli Anne and Gerri Denemer: A Horror Story, is a tour de force thriller of dark fiction, romance, and horror in an epic battle between good and evil.

Read an excerpt:
He ran to the house, struggling through the wind that sought to push him over, to deter him from entering that house.

“No, Gerri,” the chaperone hollered. “Do NOT go in there!”

But Gerri quickened his pace.

The chaperone was in front of him.

He turned to go around him.

The chaperone was in front of him.

He jerked to the left, running at max speed.

The chaperone was in front of him, pushed Gerri to the ground. Picked him up and clasped Gerri’s shoulders with an iron hand.

“It’s not allowed, Gerri.”

“What’re you talking about? I just want to go home.”

The chaperone laughed. He started pacing, circling Gerri with his hand on Gerri’s shoulder.

“What do you think, Gerri, hang yourself and you get to go back home? No, no, no, Gerri. Look around you. You’re not even close to home!”

“What? That can’t be!”

“Between worlds, Gerri! That’s where you are. What’s in that house is nothing. Nothing more than the slither of energy you left, the portal of death with the stink of fear. You’re not welcome there. Not welcome at all.” He slipped his hand off Geri’s shoulder. Stepped an arm’s length away from him.

“No, no, no, this can’t be! This can’t be.”

“Oh, yes, Gerri, it can, and it is.”

The chaperone paused.

“It’s best that you come with me Gerri.”

Gerri screamed, “Where did I go wrong?”

The chaperone stiffened.

He turned to the house and paused.

Review of 'Before We Say Goodbye' by Julie MacLennan

Before We Say Goodbye

by Julie MacLennan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Life is about to change forever for four strangers who share a train journey just before Christmas.
Read an excerpt:
‘Yes, Amanda?’
‘Edward Blake on Line 2, Mr Hunt.’
‘Put him through.’
He waited for the click on the line and braced himself for what was to come.
‘Ed? What can I…’
Edward Blake, slurring his words viciously, didn’t even wait for Damien to finish the sentence before erupting into a tirade of fury.
‘Don’t take that fancy tone with me, you bastard! What the hell do you think you’re playing at? We had a deal.’
Damien’s tone was icily cool as he responded to the man who had been a business partner until the day before.
‘Yes, Ed, you’re correct. But you defaulted on our agreement’.
‘It was one payment. A short term cash flow problem. I can fix it. You know I can. I want my hotel back, do you hear me? You can’t do this. I won’t let you!’
‘I have no choice, Ed. We went through the terms of the agreement very thoroughly before we both signed up to it. I’m sure you haven’t forgotten.’
‘But you’ll leave me with nothing. I’ll be finished! You can’t do this to me…’
Damien tried to soften his tone a little, speaking more quietly now in an attempt to diffuse the situation.
‘Believe me, Ed, I take no pleasure in it, but a deal is a deal. And you were more than happy at the time. If I remember correctly, you treated yourself and your lovely wife to a round-the-world cruise to celebrate your good fortune. In fact, from what I hear, you’ve been celebrating quite a lot over the last few months. At my expense, it would seem.’
‘That’s not true. I’d never cheat you. I left it with my accountant to deal with while I was away. You know I had no choice. My family needed me. I couldn’t be in two places at once. It was an oversight, that’s all. I can put it right. I’m back now. I can sort it. I know I can.’
‘Maybe. But you took your eye off the ball long enough for your employees to let you down. You should have known better than to trust your life’s work to someone else.’
Edward Blake was rambling now and obviously very drunk. His breathing had become strained and erratic and Damien felt a twinge of sympathy for him. But he couldn’t back down. He had a business to run. And a reputation to uphold. If word got out that he was losing his touch…
**My thoughts**
This book took me a little bit to get into. There are so many characters being introduced in the first few chapters. Not only do you have everyone who is riding on the train, but also everyone who is trying to get in touch with these characters. The third-person point-of-view keeps shifting from character to character. You can tell they are all intertwined, but are not quite sure what exactly is the thread that is keeping them all together. About a quarter of the way through, I finally felt like I was clear on who was whom, and what a lot of their relationships were.
Each person is damaged. They are all suffering from a loss. What they don't realize is that their chance meetings are going to change their lives forever.
I spent some time trying to figure out which character was my favorite. I feel particularly drawn to Kate. She has been underappreciated all of these years, and is treated terribly by her stepdaughter. She is getting to the point where she is becoming somewhat forgetful as she struggles to make heads or tails out of her situation. She just wants to be loved and for people to be kind to her. I felt a motherly draw to her, and just wanted to sit next to her and give her a big hug.
I also really liked Alessandro's boys, particularly Luca. He is the charmer who sees the good in everyone and wants to always do right. I've taught children like him before and am always drawn to them.
This was a different kind of read for me, yet an interesting one. It will be interesting to see in which direction this newly published author will go in the future.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Julie MacLennan lives and works in Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland.
This is her first published novel although she has been writing for as long as she can remember.
Some of her earliest memories are of sitting by her grandfather’s chair and being fascinated by the books he read. Later, encouraged by her grandmother’s gift for writing and her mother’s imagination, she began to transfer her own short stories and poetry to paper.
Her shared love of football with her father inspired her to write the poem “Farewell, Our Friend” which was read out and televised around the world at George Best’s funeral in late 2005.
More recently, she was honored to be asked by the Royal British Legion if they could use another of her poems, “The Promise”, as part of their commemoration of the First World War.
She is now working on her second novel.
Date Published: January 26, 2015
A father's love. A family's tragedy. A daughter's revenge.
Honor student Emma knows more about galvanic cell diagrams than guns. College is the only way out of her gang-ridden hometown, but her parents can't afford it.
When her unemployed dad lands a job as a census taker, things start looking up. But he's sent deep into East Malo Verde, where gang members rule the streets and fear anyone with a badge who knocks on doors. One night, a gang member mistakes him for a cop and beats him savagely, leaving him for dead.
Her best friends, her chem lab partner, her mom, and the detective assigned to the case all try to convince her to focus on school. But school won't prepare her for a world that ignores a crime against a good man. Emma must decide what's more important: doing what's expected, or doing what she feels is right . . . even if it leads her down a dark and dangerous path of revenge.
The Red Road is about a girl in turmoil, coming of age as she discovers the depths - and the limits - of friendship, first love, and the bond between parents and their children.
Read an excerpt:
Dan sat next to her in AP Chemistry, but never seemed to have the requisite supplies. At the beginning of the year, she became his go-to paper provider, and he’d agreed to be her lab partner. Lucky for her, he was the most precise measurer she’d ever met, and that included her mom, who was like Attila the Hun with measuring cups.
Everything was fine until February 8, when he’d leaned over their lab table and asked if she had a hot date for Valentine’s Day. Her pencil slipped, and instead of entering “NR” for the cross of Pb with Pb(NO3)2, she blistered through the page with the tip of her Ticonderoga. “What did you say?” she asked.
His dark hair flopped over his eyebrows, almost reaching his cheekbones. “Here,” he said. “Let me do that. You’re messing it up again.” Since that moment, she’d been haunted by the implications of his question. No one had ever asked her out and she’d assumed no one ever would, not while she had baby fat and bad skin.
One day during sophomore year, class president Javier Benavides flung an arm around her after biology class. Javier’s friend said, “Hey, is this your new girl?” Javier raised both hands quicker than a cowboy in a calf-tying contest. “No way,” he’d said. “These are the ones you save for marriage.” Emma had no idea what that meant, aside from the fact that it was mortally embarrassing for Javier’s name to be linked with hers in any romantic context. She was dating kryptonite—until February 8 at 11:42 a.m., when Dan joked about her having a date on Valentine’s Day. This was no small thing.
She watched Dan and his friends walk toward her table. They were heading for the main hall, its doorway just behind her. She liked the way he walked, with slightly turned-out legs that weren’t bowed but definitely weren’t straight. He had very smooth lips, while hers were always chapped. It didn’t seem fair.
She tried to smile, in case he looked at her. The boys shuffled by, talking about the match on Saturday. He didn’t see her. He didn’t even look in her general direction. Story of my life, she thought.
