EXCERPT
A twinge of pain burned through my arm, and I gently rubbed the spot where I’d been shot nearly three weeks ago. Getting a shot in the arm may sound like a simple thing for most people, but when it’s done by a bullet, it’s a whole different story. At least it was healing nicely, and the scar wasn’t too big, but every once in a while my arm ached like it had happened yesterday, probably because I was overdoing it again. After a few seconds the pain subsided, and I finished pulling on my shirt and got dressed.
Today was my first day back at work since the shooting, and I was ready to take on a new project. This time the job was a client from my consulting agency, which suited me just fine. My last job for Uncle Joey, the local mob-boss, had gotten me both arrested for murder and shot by a bullet in the arm, so I was a little nervous about doing anything for him again.
A few months ago I had to tell Uncle Joey my secret that I could read minds so he wouldn’t kill me. We’d worked out a compromise, and over the course of our association, we’d even become close. Crazy as it sounded, I’d started to think of him as my real uncle, even though he wasn’t. Since most of his errands seemed to get me into trouble, he’d also saved my life a few times. Well, to be honest, it was his hit-man, Ramos, doing most of the saving. But it was Uncle Joey who’d told him to watch out for me.
I sighed every time I thought of Ramos. He had a troubled past which only I knew about, and I’d helped him come to terms with it. Besides saving my life several times, there was also a physical attraction that I only dared admit out loud to my best friend, Holly. Of course after seeing him, she had a crush on him too, and since we were both happily married, I had to think it was all right. But with all of that going on, I had to wonder about myself. I mean, Uncle Joey was a big, bad mob-boss who had threatened to do me bodily harm, and Ramos was his hit-man. They were the bad guys and I had a soft spot in my heart for them. Was something wrong with me?
My husband, Chris, had no qualms about severing all ties with Uncle Joey, and it put me in a hard spot trying to please them both. But since the last job, things had changed. After I got shot, Chris had a long talk with Uncle Joey, and I hadn’t heard from him in three weeks. In some ways it was a relief, but in others, I kind of missed him…and Ramos…well…mostly Ramos. Still, I wasn’t about to call and offer my services. Not considering what had happened last time. Nope. I wasn’t ready to get shot again. In fact, I would be pretty happy if I never saw another gun in my life.
I took a deep cleansing breath and checked the time. I had an appointment with my client at ten this morning, and it was time to go. Her name was Tiffany and this was her senior year of college. Since I didn’t have a real office, I’d told her we could meet at the campus library in-between her classes, and with her busy schedule, meeting on campus worked out great for both of us.
I drove through town with my windows down and breathed in the crisp fall air. It was the first part of October and the sky was the perfect color of blue. The trees were just beginning to change into brilliant autumn colors, and framed against the blue sky, the pure beauty and serenity lifted my spirits. With everything I’d gone through lately, I knew I was lucky to be alive.
I parked at the visitor parking meters near the library and headed toward the front of the building. It had been several years since I’d been there last, and a wave of nostalgia washed over me. I’d only been to one year of college before I’d talked Chris into marrying me. It was love at first sight for me, but it had taken some gentle persuading on my part to help Chris see how perfect we were together. Right after our marriage, we’d gone off to law school in another state. Josh had been born exactly nine months later followed by Savannah two years after that. There were times when I regretted not finishing college back then, but I wouldn’t trade the life I had now for anything.I loved my family and, as it turned out, I had a pretty good career without a degree, and I was proud of what I’d accomplished. Of course, if I hadn’t gotten shot in the head during a bank robbery, which left me with the ability to read minds, it might be a different story.
It was still hard for me to believe how my life had turned upside down simply because I’d stopped at the grocery store for some carrots. Who would have thought? Now I had my own consulting agency where I could get paid for helping people, and most of the time, all I had to do was read their minds. Not that it was always that easy, but after getting shot, I’d take some simple cases for a while.
A young woman sat on a bench near the fountain where we’d planned to meet. Her gaze caught mine and her eyes widened slightly before she recognized me. As I approached, she smiled and gave me a quick wave. She had long blond hair and a sweet face, but her somber eyes seemed out of place for someone her age, like she’d gone through some hard times.
Since she was a college student, I was a little nervous that she couldn’t afford my one-hundred-and-fifty-dollar-an-hour fee. But we’d talked about that before I agreed to meet her, and she’d seemed fine with it then. She stood to greet me.
“Shelby Nichols? Hi. I’m Tiffany Shaw. Thanks for meeting me.”
“Hi Tiffany, nice to meet you in person,” I answered.
“I know this is kind of informal, but it’s such a beautiful day. Do you mind staying out here in the sunshine?”
“I think that’s a great idea.”
“Good.” She resumed her seat on the bench and I sat beside her. She was thinking that she wasn’t sure how to start. What she needed might not even be possible, but she’d read about me in the paper and figured if anyone could help her, it was me. She’d been saving up for years to hire a private investigator and wanted the best. After a little digging, she’d heard rumors that I had premonitions. It didn’t faze her in the least. In fact, after all this time, she thought it might be the only thing that would solve the case. She just had to make sure her dad didn’t find out, since he was the over-protective sort. He’d tell her she was throwing away her money, and probably accuse me of taking advantage of her.
That certainly put a lot of pressure on me, and my stomach tightened with dread that her father would disapprove. But since she was thinking about not telling him, maybe he’d never need to find out. Considering her age and circumstances, I had hoped she’d hired me for something easy, like finding out if her roommate was after her boyfriend. But no, she was thinking about her mother, and that she was probably dead, and I knew nothing was ever as easy as I wished.
“I’d like to hire you to find my mother.” Her lips tightened and pain flashed through her eyes. “You see…I’m getting married in a few weeks and I really want her to be there.” She didn’t add ‘if she’s still alive’ like she was thinking.
She’d always imagined her mother would be at her wedding, and now that it was actually happening, she couldn’t stop wondering where her mom was and what had happened to her. The day her mother had gone missing was the worst day of her life, and thinking about it brought all the horror back, but she knew she would never move on unless she had some answers.
“Tell me what happened,” I said gently.
She took a deep breath. “It’s been nearly six years, and I know that’s a long time, but just hear me out before you decide if you can take the job or not.”
“Okay.” I encouraged her with a smile. “Go on.”
“Like I said…it will be six years on the twenty-eighth of October since she went missing. That night, she drove to the office where she worked to drop something off and never came back. They found her car parked in the parking structure with the keys in the ignition. Her purse was on the passenger seat. Nothing was taken, and there was no sign of a struggle. It was like she just disappeared off the face of the earth.”
“What did the police tell you?”
“Well…they dusted for prints, checked her office, put out a missing person’s report, questioned her colleagues at work, and brought my father in for questioning.” She hated that they had suspected him. He was innocent. He had nothing to do with it. He loved her mom. It still made her angry. It was part of what had made the day so bad. She not only lost her mother, but her father was never the same after that.
“What happened to your father? Did they charge him with anything?”
Tiffany shook her head. “No. They had no evidence that he was involved, but the police always suspect the husband first. So it was bad enough that my mom disappeared, but the fact that they thought my dad had something to do with it made it ten times worse.”
She sighed, wondering for the thousandth time what kind of person she would be right now if she still had her mom. She’d probably be a lot happier, that was for sure. “My dad’s doing better now. He even got married a couple of months ago.”
“That’s good,” I said.
“Yeah.” She was glad he had finally moved on, and wished it was something she could do. But the ache just wouldn’t go away, especially with her upcoming wedding. This was the most important day of her life, and her mother should be there. So where was she? What had happened? Who had taken her? Why hadn’t she come home?
In her heart, she knew her mother never would have left unless she was forced into it. Speculation from the police and others of affairs, with her mom running off with another man, only deepened the wound, and she wouldn’t believe any of it. That’s why a small part of her had to believe her mom was dead, but what if she wasn’t? What if someone was holding her captive? It could happen, and she just couldn’t give up until she knew for sure.
“What did the police decide about the case?” I asked.
“Officially, she’s missing and presumed dead. At least that’s what they declared so my dad could re-marry. I don’t know what happened to the case files. But I’m hoping you can dig them up and maybe find something that got passed over. I know it’s a long shot, but I’ve never had the resources to hire a private investigator until now. Do you think you could look into it for me?”
I bit my bottom lip. The chances of finding out what happened at this point were pretty slim. My mind-reading ability wouldn’t be of much use, although I could still question her dad. Even though she didn’t think it was him, I’d learned that some people were really good at keeping secrets, and I wasn’t about to rule him out. I could probably get my hands on the police file and talk to the detectives who handled the case, but beyond that, I didn’t have much hope.

'The Reagan Casualties: Overseas Atrocities of the Great Communicator' by Jacob Klezaras

Blurb:

In his 1985 State of the Union address, President Reagan famously proclaimed, "Freedom is not the sole prerogative of a chosen few; it is the universal right of all God's children." Despite this bold declaration, Reagan’s actions proved detrimental to the cause of human freedom all over the world. In this short but compelling polemic, Klezaras examines The Gipper’s record abroad from a perspective of human rights, shining light on his administration’s wrongdoings from Haiti to Iraq. President Reagan, the facilitator of genocide, the sponsor of terrorism, the abettor of death squads and steadfast ally of despots and warlords far and wide is summarily exposed – and the myth of Ronald Reagan as a crusader for global liberty is expertly laid to rest.

Rejection sucks, but does it have to? Thoughts by Maggie Thom, author of 'Tainted Waters'

Rejection Sucks... But Does It Have To?

By Maggie Thom

Rejection, even the word doesn't sound very nice. Unfortunately it is one of the harsh realities of the world we live in - someone is going to reject something that has to do with you. They're not going to like something you wear, you do, you say, you act, you write... The sad truth is that often we take it personally as being rejected, as not being good enough...

And that's what will keep you stalled.

First you need to look at what you consider rejection. Within the first three days of my book, Captured Lies being published, someone bought and then returned the ebook. My first reaction was, 'Oh my God, it's true, I'm no good.' It didn't matter that I had several other sales and people telling me how much they loved the book. Thankfully I didn't stay in that place of not being good enough, very long. All it meant was that my book wasn't for that person. Which is okay. Ironically at the same time this person was returning the ebook, I got a five star review on Amazon from another reader. Funny how the positive always loses out to the negative, right? I was excited about the five star but it was still overshadowed by the returned ebook.

We seem to be so programmed to look at the negative no matter how small or insignificant. What that meant for me was that I was allowing someone else to judge me and to determine if I was any good or not. And I was listening.

Once I recognized that, I was able to stop that. I reminded myself that it just meant my story wasn't what that person was looking for. It's no different than when I read a story and like it where others don't or I don't like it where others do. And that's okay. We all have different tastes, likes and dislikes. As an author, I know that my stories appeal to those who love fast-paced suspense/thrillers. So that is the audience I want to find.

If someone criticizes, judges or puts down my book I will see if there is anything constructive in what they are saying that I can apply to my work to improve my work otherwise I let it go. It's their stuff. Not mine. And if someone does criticize, judge or put down my writing, again it's not about me. Writing is something I do and I strive to improve it all the time but it does not define who I am. Someone's thoughts and feelings about my writing DOES NOT define who I am. It took me a long time to separate myself from that. In fact, it was getting to that point that was what finally gave me the impetus to leap into publishing.

Do not take the negative personally. Learn from what others says but remove the emotional attachment.

Remember your gift is something you do, it is not who you are.

What is your experience with rejection?

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her...

Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there, twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offense to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false.

Keegan, who has recently moved to the area to finish his latest book, is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered? The descendants of the four families, who own the land around the lagoon, are dying off.

Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? Why would there be barricades and armed guards at the north end of the lake? To stay alive, Sam and Keegan must find the answers and convince others, before more people are killed... including them.

Read an excerpt:
Was any of it enough to want to kill Sam?
He supposed if she was digging up dirt on the guy that he’d paid to bury, maybe. Frustrated he shoved his hand through his unruly curls only to wince in disgust as he felt the greasy build up. He needed a shower. He took his laptop, quietly tiptoed to his bed, set it down and then went back for the case. Knocking it over, his air stick fell out. Annoyed that he’d missed it the first time, he shoved it into the laptop. Within a few minutes, he saw that Harry had made a few more phone calls that had downloaded before he’d grabbed it from the cabin. Deciding he might as well take a quick shower, he would then reset the stuff up and listen to it after. He clicked to close the program but the computer didn’t seem to respond. There was a little circle spinning on his screen but nothing was happening. Sam’s deep, endearing blow-out breaths were still steady. Not wanting to waste the opportunity and figuring he’d be back in time, he climbed in the shower. After knocking his elbows a few times, he realized that since they weren’t at the Ritz things like shampoo and soap weren’t a given. He scrubbed his hair, face and body as best he could with his hands, partly to stave off the chill of the cool water and partly to remove all the sweat and dirt clinging to him. Within a few minutes he was drying himself with a threadbare hand towel, which made him think the housekeeping staff or the owner had a hell of a sense of humor.

He’d been so deep in thought about all that was going on and the relief of finally being clean, that the sounds coming from the bedroom didn’t register for a few minutes.
‘...heart attack...’
‘Sam...'
‘...it’s done...’
He jerked on his pants, yanked open the door and dove for the bed, hitting the off button. That silenced it but the computer froze. His relief was short-lived when he realized that Sam's gentle snoring was also gone. Looking over his shoulder, with the bathroom light spotlighting her - she was sitting up, her knees drawn to her chest. Her eyes black obsidian, never leaving his face.
“Uh...”

Teri Riggs, author of 'The Eyes Die Last,' share her insights on research for your novel

Research for Novels

Doing the research for your books can be fun. You learn a lot of stuff that’s interesting, and a lot of stuff that might bore you to tears. Sometimes I’m shocked at what I find. Sometimes I already knew what pops up on my screen or in a research book. Some things I share with my family and friends, and some things I learn I’m planning to take to the grave with me.

Most authors will have to do a bit of research for their books, whether they want to or not. I write fiction only, but my readers still want the facts straight. I know there are readers who know all about weapons. A beta reader informed me once it wasn’t possible to fire a weapon the way I’d described in one scene. I went back into research mode, found what I needed, and made the changes.

One beta reader wanted to know how a heroine could have the injuries I described, but turn around a few days later and have wild monkey sex. Another change I made after more research on the injuries my heroine suffered. Do the research up front and you’ll have less embarrassing critiques from test readers.

I’ve written a historical romance and the post-civil war history fascinated me. I’m pretty sure I spent as much time reading about the time period as I spent writing the book. I think my research has made me much smarter. I know more things about random subjects than I did before I began writing. I can actually answer trivia questions every now and then.

Through my exploration of the drug trade, I learned exactly how brave the DEA, FBI, ATF, and other alphabet agencies operatives are. They risk their lives every day in an effort to stamp out the illegal drug industry. I have a new respect for them.

My biggest shock while researching? I was googling everything I could find on the prostitution business in Las Vegas. The next thing I knew, my inbox became flooded with porno sites and offers. Imagine the look on my hubby’s face when I asked him how I could keep the stuff from landing in my inbox. He brought his IT guy from his office over and had him install better anti-virus security. Did I mention the IT guy and his wife were good friends of ours or that both of their fathers were preachers? I’m sure he loved seeing the results of my research plastered all over my email.

In spite of the embarrassment, I still do the research no matter what the subject. I’m sure I’m on the NSA’s watch list somewhere. I’ve explored ways to kill people, special ops protocols, and even ways to breach the No-Fly zone in D.C.

But, at least I’m not getting all the porno emails anymore!

The Eyes Die Last
by Teri Riggs

BLURB:

The Las Vegas Mayoral race is heating up, and the incumbent doesn’t have a prayer. Wealthy real estate speculator Nick Campenelli, who wants to legalize prostitution in Clark County, and former pastor Louis St. Louis, running on a 'clean-up-Vegas-by-getting-rid-of-the-whores' platform, are the front runners.

They’re also front runners on the suspect list for a string of murders. Kennedy O’Brien, four-year detective with cop blood running in her veins, and her partner Wilder “Wild Thing” James, a veteran, are determined to find the man who’s murdering prostitutes who work the wrong side of the street, and they don’t care how important or politically active he is.

The killer is a man with a mission. He stalks the women before he kills them, leaving a “BEFORE” photo on their bodies, and sending an “AFTER” shot to the local news hound. Ed Hershey, an aging newscaster with just the right amount of grey in his hair, is determined to turn this story into a network gig, and his interference, along with the LVTVS legal team, are making Kennedy and Wilder look bad. Campenelli’s good looks and charm, and St. Louis’ vitriolic hatred of prostitutes are muddying the waters too, and now the killer seems to have taken a liking to Kennedy.

So the big question remains. Can she get him before he gets her?

Read an excerpt:
Nick, leaning against a marble pillar with his arms crossed, observed the detective as she took in the view. He tried to figure out what was going on in that beautiful head of hers.

She was stunning. Her hair, a rich sable color, fell just below her shoulders. Long, dark lashes surrounded rare blue-violet eyes. Her lips were full and softly sculpted. She was tall and lithe, and when she moved, he got a glimpse of the soft, womanly curves hidden beneath her jacket. She wrapped her arms around her waist.

Was that a little shiver?

She tilted her head back and took a deep breath, and then let it out with a long sigh.

“Are you chilled, Detective? I can get you a wrap.”

She turned and snarled. “I just lost my balance for a second. You shouldn’t sneak up on a person like that. You’re lucky I didn’t shoot you.” She didn’t give him a chance to respond. “Why in the hell would anyone want an office way up here anyway?”

He found the slight Irish cadence that had slipped into her voice, very, very sexy. “For the view of course. I’ve caught you admiring it. Or was the sigh for me?”

“Don’t flatter yourself, Slick. Not that it’s any of your business, but that was an attempt to keep my morning coffee down. The ride up could make a bird nauseous.”

“Not fond of heights, I take it. Too bad. Being at the top gives a person a much clearer picture of everything.” He stepped forward and stood side by side, shoulder to shoulder with her, enjoying the view himself. “Can you honestly deny how great the view is from here?”

“Being this high up makes my heart pound and knees weak. I feel so woozy I could hurl. But strangely enough, I can’t help but look.” Her voice softened. “It’s a really spectacular view.”

Nick could tell the minute Kennedy realized what she’d said. She turned to face him, looking totally mortified. Her eyes narrowed and her body stiffened.

“I’m glad you enjoy it, Detective. Give yourself a few minutes and the weak knees and the urge to hurl, as you so delicately put it, will go away. Then you can relax and enjoy the panorama.”

“Sorry, I don’t have the time to stand around getting off on scenery. And I sure as hell don’t have time to worry about whether or not I speak delicately. I have a few more questions I need you to answer.” Her voice had regained its hard edge.

“No problem, Detective. Let’s move over to my desk, or the couch. Whichever you’d feel more comfortable at.”

“Your desk will be fine. This shouldn’t take long, Mr. Campenelli.”

“Please, call me Nick.” He led her over to his desk and offered her a chair across from his own.

“Mr. Campenelli—”

"Nick, please,” he interrupted.

“I’m not here to make nice, Mr. Campenelli. I’d like for you to tell me about the photos of prostitutes you have plastered on the break room wall at your campaign headquarters. Can you explain what that’s all about?”

He felt the beginnings of anger snake up his spine, then take root at the base of his skull. “I see you’ve been talking to Ed Hershey. He asked me the same question and I told him to go to hell as it was none of his business. I assume since you’re wearing that nice shiny badge, I wouldn’t get away with giving you the same explanation.”

“You assume right.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Teri Riggs was destined to be a writer. As a small girl she didn’t read bedtime stories, she made up her own. Who needed Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs when there were so many great tales bouncing around in her head? When she grew up and became a mother to three little girls, she continued the tradition of making up bedtime stories. On the occasions she chose to tell conventional fairytales, Teri usually gave them a bit of tweaking here and there or added a new ending. Her girls loved it.

After her daughters had the nerve to actually grow up and leave home, Teri discovered she had a passion for writing and jumped right in. It came as no surprise she chose to write mysteries and happily-ever-after’s since that’s the genres she loves to read.

Teri lives in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, one of her daughters and two dogs that seem to think they rule the world. And some days Teri thinks maybe they do.

Teri still frequently tells herself stories as she falls asleep. The only difference now is she wakes up the next morning and turns her bedtime stories into books.

'Notice Me (Holton Series #2)' by B.L. Blair

Notice Me
by B.L. Blaire

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Andrew Moore has always thought of Victoria as family. She is his best friend’s little sister and his little sister’s best friend, but recently something has changed. Andrew is thinking about Victoria in a completely different way. She will never fit into his quiet, conservative world. They are too different to have a future together, but he can’t help noticing her.
Victoria Carson has been in love with Andrew since her sixteenth birthday, but Andrew never noticed her as anything other than his best friend’s little sister. She fled from her hometown so that she wouldn’t have to watch Andrew build a life with someone else. But things have changed. Andrew is now a widower, and Victoria has returned home. It is time to make him notice her.
Return to Holton, Texas to see if Victoria can get Andrew to notice her. Notice Me is the second book in the Holton Series but may be read as a standalone novel.
Read an excerpt:
Andrew smiled and allowed his thoughts to wander to Victoria. He glanced at the clock and wondered if he should call her. He knew she was working on an important account and he didn't want to interrupt her. He settled for sending her flowers instead. This time he thought it would be appropriate.
He was pleased to hear from her later that afternoon. Julie buzzed him and said with humor running through her voice. "Tori, is on line two."
Andrew grabbed the phone. He had been waiting for her call but hadn't realized how anxious he was. "Hi."
"Hi, yourself." She sounded happy. "Thanks for the flowers, Drew. They are beautiful, and of course, I'll have dinner with you."
"Great. Do you want me to meet you in Dallas or do you want to go to The King's Court?"
He decided that since their family now knew about their relationship, there was no reason not to go out together in Holton. Between Julie and Mrs. Stewart, the whole town would know soon away.
She paused a moment and then whispered softly, "Or we could eat at my place, all alone."
Andrew smiled widely. "Are you propositioning me, Ms. Carson?"
Her delighted laughter sent a chill down his spine. The blood rushed through his veins and his pulse speed up. "Oh yes, Mr. Moore. I am definitely propositioning you."
"I accept!" he said quickly. "What time?"
"About seven?"
"I'll be there. See you tonight, Tori." He hung up the phone with a silly grin on his face.
'The Gull Motel' by Amie Denman
The Gull Motel
by Amie Denman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Savvy Thorpe needs a vacation. Finally finished with college, she heads to her favorite shabby motel on Florida’s Gulf Coast where her aunt and uncle always save her room twenty-four. She quickly finds out, though, that The Gull Motel is not just her home away from home. It’s hers to manage while her aunt and uncle take an extended trip.

Skip McComber, The Gull’s former maintenance man, has been working on Savvy’s nuts and bolts for years. Now the new owner of the bar next door, his mission is to renovate a pirate bar while being a walking temptation for the girl he can’t get off his mind.

For Savvy, keeping her cool running a motel in Florida heat is one thing, but navigating the steamy waters of a former fling takes a whole other kind of savvy. In addition to the motel and the man next door, Savvy stumbles on a plot to swindle land from the residents of Barefoot Key. Devalued properties tumble like dominoes until Savvy musters her colorful crew from The Gull Motel to make the pillagers walk the plank.

Read an excerpt:
I watched a fishing charter leave a wharf several properties farther down the beach. I could see at least half a dozen people and lots of long fishing poles sticking up all over the boat like a case of bed hair. An idea swirled through my head like the sand between my toes.

“Fishing charter,” a voice said behind me.

I jumped. “You shouldn’t sneak up on people like that.”

“Hard to make noise in sand,” Skip said.

“You should try. I might have had a heart attack or something and then you’d have my blood on your hands.”

Skip picked up a long lock of hair brushing my shoulder and twisted it in his fingers. He leaned forward just a little and glanced down my shirt. “You look perfectly healthy to me.”

I stepped back, hoping to restore my heart rate to something close to healthy.

“One of these days we should talk about last spring,” he said. “Maybe over some tequila.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “I thought you would have called me if you wanted to talk. You’ve had plenty of time since April.”

Skip put his hands in the pockets of his cargo shorts and rocked back on bare heels in the sand. He was shirtless as usual. And he wasn’t taking my bait.

“Saw you staring at the fishing charter boat,” he said.

“I was thinking about something.”

“Thinking of teaming up with a local charter and offering package deals? Could be a great add-on to rooms at The Gull.”

My heart rate steam-trained up the scale again. That was exactly the idea I’d been formulating, and I didn’t appreciate him acting like it was his. The danger of years of slightly-lusty friendship is that you can know a person too well. And they’ve got your thoughts on speed-dial.

Read an excerpt from 'Hold Still' by Lisa Regan

Hold Still
by Lisa Regan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
After saving her three-year-old daughter from a car-jacking, off-duty police detective Jocelyn Rush ends up in the ER. The last person she expects to run into is Anita Grant, former prostitute and an old acquaintance from Jocelyn’s days on patrol. In spite of her obvious injuries—mutilated hands and feet—Anita refuses to talk about what happened. Reluctantly, Jocelyn backs off, and Anita's case goes to Philadelphia’s Special Victims Unit.
Before long, Jocelyn is pulled into the SVU’s investigation. Anita is finally ready to talk, but only to Jocelyn. Her story is harrowing, even to a seasoned veteran like Jocelyn. Working with SVU, Jocelyn’s investigation unearths a series of similar crimes going back four years. Three men are preying on local prostitutes, viciously assaulting and mutilating them.
The police apprehend two of the suspects, but the third eludes capture. As the hunt for the most sadistic of the three intensifies, and his crimes escalate, Jocelyn and her colleagues have precious few leads. Then a monster from Jocelyn’s past resurfaces. She doesn’t want to be reminded of the terrible secret that destroyed her family nearly twenty years earlier, but the man offers her a lead that could crack Anita’s case.
To solve it, Jocelyn must connect her past with her present—before a sadistic attacker sets his sights on her.
Read an excerpt:
The Wawa was crowded as usual. It was the only Wawa in their neighborhood, and the only minimarket worth its salt. For years it had been across the street with a parking lot so small, it defied explanation. Someone very intelligent had come up with the idea of moving it to a much more spacious lot, the site of a long defunct car dealership. The result was better parking and a larger Wawa but even more customers.
Jocelyn guided Olivia over to the frozen drink machine and let her pull the frozen strawberry cup out of the freezer. Jocelyn peeled back the lid.
“Look, Mommy. It’s the same color as Lulu!” Olivia said, rocking up onto the balls of her feet and pointing to the pink concoction inside the cup.
“It sure is,” Jocelyn agreed. She put the cup into the blending machine and pushed the blend button. As the cup ascended into the machine, she chose a lid and threaded a straw through it. The machine made a grinding, whirring sound. Jocelyn smiled at Olivia and arched a brow. “Does that mean Lulu is a strawberry bear?”
Olivia grinned. “She’s not a strawberry bear, Mommy. She’s just a bear.”
“I don’t know. I think I should taste her and see.”
Olivia giggled convulsively as Jocelyn bent and pretended to bite Lulu’s leg. Her giggles rose to high-pitched squeals. Jocelyn looked around to see if they had drawn stares from the other customers.
That’s when she saw him.
He stood across the aisle, at the coffee kiosk. His face was still swollen and bruised.
When he smiled at her, she could see the metal bracing in his mouth holding his jaw in place.
Henry Richards.
What the hell was he doing in her neighborhood? In her Wawa?
She didn’t notice how hard her heart was thundering until she felt Olivia’s little hand tugging hers. “Mommy, Mommy, it’s done. Can I put the lid on?”
Instinctively, Jocelyn scooped Olivia up without taking her eyes from Henry. He took a step toward them.
“Don’t,” Jocelyn said. The edge in her voice froze him. He looked momentarily confused.
Once again, Jocelyn wished she had her gun. She’d have to start carrying an off-duty weapon.
People passed between them, oblivious.
“You’re in violation of a restraining order,” Jocelyn said.
Henry laughed, his gnarled smile framing his wire-gritted teeth. “Like I give a shit.”
Jocelyn glanced around. Surely, he wouldn’t try anything in a crowded minimarket.
“Mommy—”
“Just a minute, honey.”
Jocelyn panned the store again, hoping to see a uniformed officer. The Wawa was directly across from the 5th District. Didn’t any of them need coffee or snacks?
She swallowed hard over the lump in her throat. She reached for the milkshake and handed it to Olivia. Then she reached for the lid. Olivia took it from her and fit it onto the top of the cup.
“What do you want?” she asked Richards.
Henry reached inside his jacket. Jocelyn’s voice turned sharp and loud like the report of a gun. “Don’t,” she said again, this time drawing the attention of several people around them. She turned her body so that as little of Olivia was exposed to him as possible. Again, Henry froze, nervousness slackening the sneer on his face. He looked around at the faces now gaping at him.
Jocelyn lowered her voice and narrowed her eyes. Even though she didn’t want to be near him, she stepped closer. “Unless you want me to break your face again, you’ll take your hand out of your pocket and get out of here.”
Slowly, he removed his hand. He put both hands up, trying to smile again. The seam where Jocelyn had split his lip cracked. A small bead of blood formed.
Olivia grew heavy in Jocelyn’s arms. She shifted her hold, jostling Olivia. The strawberry milkshake toppled to the floor, landing with a splat. A Wawa clerk who’d been watching the exchange between Jocelyn and Henry rushed over. Olivia wailed, fat teardrops rolling down her face. “I’m sorry, Mommy!”
“It’s okay, honey,” Jocelyn soothed. “We’ll clean it up and get another one.”
The clerk smiled at Olivia. “Don’t worry, sweetie. That’s what we have mops for. Why don’t you get yourself another one? No charge.”
Jocelyn mumbled a thank you to the woman, trying to force a smile. When she looked back at Henry, he was gone.
The clerk already had the milkshake machine awhir as another worker came out to clean up the milkshake. Jocelyn’s gaze swiveled around the minimarket, but she didn’t see Henry. The clerk gave her a napkin, and she dabbed Olivia’s cheeks.
“I’m sorry about this,” Jocelyn told the clerk. “I’ll pay for both.”
The woman smiled, her eyes warm and sympathetic. “Oh sweetie, don’t you worry about it.” She held out a crudely folded origami crane. “Is this yours?”
“Yes,” Jocelyn said. It wasn’t hers, of course. But it was meant for her. Her hand trembled as she took it.
