Read an exclusive excerpt from Nuclear Power Nuclear Game by Helen Huang

Welcome to the tour for Nuclear Power Nuclear Game by Helen Huang! Today I'm sharing with you an exclusive excerpt of this political thriller. Let the author know what you think and then follow the tour for even more. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

The year is 1950. Zoe and John, two young nuclear scientists from Berkeley, seem to have the perfect life, with promising careers and marriage plans. But their innocence is soon shattered when the Chinese Communist Party seizes power. Choosing to postpone the wedding and return back to her home country, Zoe finds herself locked in a political cage and separated from John indefinitely.

Caught in a complex web of revolutionary propaganda and forced to participate in dangerous research, Zoe must confront the looming question of where her true loyalties lie: with her country or with John back in America?

Set during China's march towards nuclear power amidst the political turmoil of the Cold War, Nuclear Power Nuclear Game spans multiple decades and countries across the globe to tell the story of two nuclear scientists' fight for world peace and a love torn apart by conflicting ideologies.

Read an exclusive excerpt:
Zoe and Major Liu had never had a close, loving relationship, more like two strangers accidentally sharing a room. He had no interest in her work beyond its significance to China’s defense, and she ignored his presence as best she could, except on the occasions when he demanded sex. Even then she called him Major Liu, and to him she was still Comrade Meng.

She was ashamed of her marriage, ashamed of how common and uneducated he was. The pregnancy— in fact, her entire marriage—had been difficult and demanding. At first, she had denied the fact that she was pregnant, unwilling to bear Major Liu’s child. She wore loose clothes to hide the bulge in her belly and exhausted herself with physical exertion, hoping to miscarry. But the heart beating inside her was relentless, as stubborn as she was. As she had so often before, eventually she resigned herself to the inevitable and gradually accepted the child. Perhaps it was compensation for her loveless marriage? Major Liu was stunned when she told him, eyeing her with equal parts doubt and bewilderment. Once he accepted the news, though, his usually dour face actually broke into a smile. “Let’s name the baby Xiaohong, Little Red. The child will be a little red soldier, born to defend our beloved motherland,” he exclaimed.

Xiaohong arrived a week early—a big, healthy girl—but the long, difficult labor and loss of blood almost killed Zoe. Too weak to care for a newborn and with Commissar Zhu insisting she return to work as soon as possible, she had reluctantly agreed when Major Liu proposed sending Xiaohong to Zoe’s parents in Beijing. He argued they would be able to provide a better environment for raising a child. The only comfort and meaning she might find in life was taken away. And the only link they had holding them together was gone.

America's Culture War: 2020 DiVision by Stephen Grant

No matter what anyone tells you, we’re in a war—a culture war. Our morality is at stake, and our children are growing up in a dangerous world. We’re hearing conflicting things online and from the media; our fellow citizens are becoming lazy, relying on the service of the government and the kind hearts of the religious. The best thing we can do in these troubled times is open our minds to the truth. The real truth, not the truth spouted in fake news and reports.

Whether you’re conservative or liberal, you can agree that the United States of America needs some old-fashioned TLC. Neither political party is perfect, and focusing on our disagreements isn’t solving our problems. Instead, think back to our Constitution. Think back to our Founding Fathers. Is this really the nation we made? Can we really justify pandering to today’s society?

I’m asking for your eyes and ears, just for a short time. I’m no politician, no expert of any kind, but I implore you to rethink what it means to be an American. Let’s make a more perfect union together for this is a country of the people, for the people, and by the people.

Justice Gone by N. Lombardi, Jr.

WINNER OF THREE AWARDS
2019 AMERICAN FICTION AWARD
NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCY AWARD - Best Legal Thriller OF 2019
SILVER MEDAL WINNER 2019 READERS' FAVORITES AWARDS
Chosen by Wiki.ezvid.com among their list of 10 Gripping and Intelligent Legal Thrillers

The courtroom scenes are wonderfully written...the characters are well described and the author paints a picture of each in the mind of the reader...Strong plot, strong characters and a strong writing style that I really enjoyed. This one is a definite "thumbs-up." Strongly recommend! I look forward to reading additional works by N. Lombardi, Jr.
~Kim M Aalaie, Author's Den

One of my favorite suspense novels of the year. It will make you question the legal system.
~The Eclectic Review

The courtroom action is excellent, trimmed to the most gripping parts of the trial, with plenty of emotional impact...a fairly realistic portrayal of the way small-town US society works...a fast-moving story with plenty of dramatic moments, and a big twist in the final pages.
~Crime Review

Justice Gone

When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down.

A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran's counselor, is caught up in the chase.

Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa's patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers gets there first, leading to Darfield's dramatic capture.

Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?

Read an excerpt:
“Mr. Bodine, I’m Hamilton Fiske, deputy district attorney. I’ll be prosecuting this case.”

“Didn’t we meet last year at the meeting of the New Jersey Bar Association?” Bodine asked, as his daughter collected their papers and put them in their briefcase.

“Yes, I believe we did.”

“Thought so. I never forget a voice.”

That comment threw Fiske off-center for a moment. “I just wanted to, well, shake hands so to speak, before we come out fighting.”

“Is your hand out there in the air, waiting for mine? Cause if it is, you can put it back wherever you had it. I don’t shake hands these days. And while you’re at it, you can remove that smug smile off your face. I don’t have to see it, I can tell by your tone. You’ve already pissed me off, and this is just the arraignment. So I’m not exactly in a gentlemanly mood. And if you try to set up my client by having him mingle with the others, there’ll be hell to pay. Getting my drift, son?”

Fighting words for sure, but the word that provoked Fiske the most was the condescending “son,” just as Bodine had figured it would. “Is that a threat, Mr. Bodine?”

Emily tugged at her father’s arm with the covert message that he quit this repartee. He turned to leave, but not before saying, “No, Mr. Fiske, just a consequence.”

The American Crusade by Mark Spivak

This is one for all of my political thriller fans. It's timely and reminiscent of some of your other favorite stories in this genre. Please enjoy an excerpt and let the author know what you think! Follow the tour for even more excerpts and reviews. Plus you have bonus chances to enter the giveaway!

The American Crusade

A power-hungry vice president, a bad batch of shady intelligence, and a sinister plot to destroy Western civilization.

Just another day in America.

On May 1, 2001, a group of radical Islamic terrorists crash a Boeing 737 jet airliner into the Mall of America—and Vice President Robert Hornsby knows his moment is coming.

The attack kills three thousand American citizens and throws an entire nation into a panic, but all Hornsby sees is an opportunity, a chance to imprint his fanatical values on the soul of the country he loves and become the most powerful vice president in American history.

With the aid of his affable but ineffectual president; the reluctant, conscience-stricken secretary of defense; and a preening, foppish faith leader with more than a few skeletons in his closet; Hornsby declares war on terror—and anyone who stands in his way. But as media scrutiny of the administration’s actions overseas intensifies, Hornby’s one-man campaign against evil begins to unravel—with striking parallels to the thirteenth century’s doomed Fourth Crusade—and sends the nation spiraling toward another deadly tragedy.

The American Crusade paints a grim and often cynical picture of America’s recent past, reflecting the attitudes, politics, and fears that shaped our nation in the new millennium. By sampling the contemporaneous French text on the Fourth Crusade, On the Conquest of Constantinople, author Mark Spivak reminds us of that ever-vital adage: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Fans of The Castle by Jack Pinter, The President Is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson, House of Cards by Michael Dobbs, The Whistler by John Grisham, and the Aaron Sorkin–penned TV drama The West Wing will love this book.

Read an excerpt:
The lights from the lanterns flickered against the walls of the cave. It was nearing midnight on May 1 in the tribal areas of Kabulistan, the mountainous and impenetrable regions high up near the Persepostan border. Salman Al-Akbar sat on a cushion, surrounded by his inner circle. Fazil Ahmadi, his director of operations, had just finished briefing him on the aftermath of the Mall of America attack and the subsequent suicide missions around the United States.

“Allah be praised!” Al-Akbar’s normally sad eyes were bright and jubilant. “We have succeeded beyond our wildest expectations, beyond the reach of our dreams. Allah is most with us.”

“This is so,” said Fazil Ahmadi. “Had we dreamed it, it could not have gone better.”

“What time is it now in Washington?”

“Four-thirty in the afternoon, sir.”

“And where is the young American President now?”

“We have no knowledge of his whereabouts, sir. He is in hiding.”

“Hiding?” Al-Akbar’s eyebrows arched toward the ceiling of the cave, and his normally expressionless face was close to registering hilarity. “From whom is he hiding? Robert Hornsby?”

“He has been removed from sight, sir. We suspect they took him to one of their nuclear installations.”

“Do they actually think we are in possession of nuclear weapons?”

“We believe it is a precaution on their part, sir.”

“Allah be praised!” Al-Akbar clapped his hands in glee. “This is beyond our imagining. Everything has gone off perfectly, with synchronized precision.”

“They will most certainly retaliate, sir.”

“Against whom?” asked Al-Akbar with contempt. “Our forces are safe. The loyalty of the warlords is secure, and they will not betray us.”

“We believe their most likely target will be the Dua Khamail. They will wage war against them and will surely defeat them. Then, they will restore Selim Hanjuk to power.”

“Let them have the Dua Khamail.” Al-Akbar shrugged. “To us, it matters not who is the ruler of Kabulistan. Any war they wage against the innocent population can only help us. It will bring more recruits to our side.”

“This is true.”

“One thing I will guarantee you. They may topple the government of Kabulistan, or all of the governments of the earth, but they will never be at peace again. As they fall off to sleep, they will see us in their nightmares.”

“Yes, sir. Our position is strong, and the Americans can only immerse themselves in quicksand by invading Kabulistan. They will never find us, much less defeat us.”

“Their memories are short,” mused Al-Akbar. “They forget that the Russians tried and failed. It was their Vietnam. And the Americans are far weaker than the Russians. They do not have the will for a prolonged conflict.”

“Let us not underestimate their military strength, sir.”

“These infidels are like the Crusaders of old.” Al-Akbar’s fingers worked prayer beads in the darkness of the cave. “They have many troops, they have excellent weapons, and they have knowledge of warfare. But they lack the fire of belief, as well as the support of their people. And they do not have Allah on their side.” He smiled approvingly at his lieutenant. “You have done well today. And soon we will do better still. Today is the beginning of the great Jihad. Nearly eight hundred years ago, the East was ruled by Saladin and the true believers were victorious. That day will come again.”

Final Notice by Van Fleisher

Welcome to the blurb blitz tour for Final Notice by Van Fleisher! You'll have a chance to check out a bunch of excerpts from this thriller/political satire! Leave comments and questions for the author along the tour and you'll even have more chances to enter the giveaway.

Please note that affiliate links are present within this post. Should you make a purchase through any of them, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Final Notice

The year is the very near future. A brilliant young doctor and mathematician, Vijay Patel, has invented a new health/sport watch that monitors blood chemistry so accurately, it can actually predict when someone will die – within 10, 20, or 30 days. The intention of this “Final Notice,” as it is called, is to allow people to get their affairs in order and reach out to loved ones before it’s too late. But when those notified have easy access to a gun, the result is sometimes lethal for more than just the watch-owner.

These are the stories of several people who receive their Final Notice and their very different reactions ... including a desire to get revenge with impunity. They range from an 89-year-old resident in a retirement home to a U.S. Senator...from a benevolent widow to a crass tycoon to a noted climate change scientist.

But in this fresh, fast-paced page-turner, their stories are all set against the all-too-recognizable backdrop of a guns-gone-wild America, and the relentless push by the NRA and their surrogate politicians to make guns even easier to acquire.

There is plenty of dark humor and political satire in FINAL NOTICE, as well as touching scenes and outright suspense. So expect to laugh out loud, dry some tears, and bite your nails (not necessarily in that order).

Read an excerpt:
And sure enough, in 1.24 seconds, Trudi had 1,620,000 results. “Here it is. California law protects us if we shoot a burglar in our home. Still, it wouldn’t help if we didn’t hear them until they burst into the room. I can’t see either one of us having the presence of mind to reach for the gun, roll out of bed and blast away. What are you smiling at?”

“At the image of you doing just that!”

“Hey. I’ve been watching Angelina Jolie and I think I can manage the moves.”

About Van Fleisher

“After 21 years with an airline, and 30 years in management consulting, I retired and found that my phone didn’t ring and the only emails I got were asking for money. So, since I was at my computer, I decided to write a novel.”

This is only half the story. (Van is notoriously modest.) The author was Director of International Marketing with TWA, and an International Management Consultant – taking him behind the closed doors of boardrooms and executive offices around the world. He knows how business works, which gives the slightly “sci-fi” premise of Final Notice a realistic feel. Moreover, his two careers led him to live abroad for much of his life. After growing up in New Jersey and Florida, where he never thought much further than the length of a football field, and going to college in New Mexico, he wound up living in England, Scotland and France, travelling frequently to the Middle East and Asia. He even spent a year living in India. And his first-hand experience with – and respect for – other cultures is apparent in this book.

“Final Notice is meant to highlight, my concerns with America’s handling of three important issues: gun control (not anti-gun), ageism and the importance of immigration. The book won’t fix these issues, but there are a number of great organizations with even greater people working on our behalf to right these wrongs. Proceeds from sales of Final Notice will help support those efforts.”

David Carter, author of The Inconvenient Unborn, on Real Books versus eBooks

Today I would like to welcome author David Carter to the blog. He is not only an author, but also a bookseller, quite aware of how the market has been playing out between ebooks and hard copies. He shares some interesting insights in this guest post. Then, you can check out his book The Inconvenient Unborn.

Which type of book do you prefer reading? Hard copy or ecopy?

I read in the press yesterday that “real books” are making something of a comeback. Phew! I’m pleased about that, seeing as my profession is the one of being a bookseller.

I now have more than 12,000 titles in stock, yes in the house, and please don’t ask me where they all are, because they are everywhere! Well, maybe not in the loo, for obvious reasons. Users might run out of tissue and grab pages from a nearby title, and imagine what a disaster that would be. There are limits!

And I can honestly say that I have never sold an ebook for any other writer, (yes, I do sell them by yours truly) which is almost the exact opposite of real books, which I sell every day by any number of other writers, but maybe not so many of my own – weep weep!

When ebooks and ereaders first appeared I stupidly went on record in saying that they would never catch on. Yes, I actually put that in print, insisting that the machines wouldn’t work in the sunlight, they would forever be running out of juice, would make readers cross-eyed, and worse besides.

There was even a theory that they might make men impotent. All predictions way off the mark that couldn’t have been more wrong, especially the last one, and I am happy to belatedly set the record straight.

Now, I sell ten ebooks of mine for every one “real book”, and the odd thing is that though I sell the ebooks for a quarter of the price of an actual book, I still make more money on the ebook, and I guess that makes sense too when you think there are no printing costs, no packing and postage expenses, and the buyer receives the ebook within seconds too, so there is rarely a problem on delivery.

So, it’s good to read that “real books” are making a comeback. Personally, I don’t think they ever went away, for there is something truly special about the feel and smell of a freshly printed book, something that a sterile ereader can never reproduce, though I am now becoming very wary of dissing technology, for before you know it, some boffin will invent a smell-o-vision app that can release occasional odours of new book and fresh print. God forbid.

It is 540 years this year since William Caxton introduced the first printing press into England in 1476, printing the first mass books in English. Nice to know that such an operation has lasted that long, and that there is life in the old bear yet.

Will “real books” fend off technology for another 540? Probably not, but let’s hope so, if only for the wellbeing of the poor bookseller, or we’ll all go hungry. Mind you, some of us could do with losing a little weight.

Happy reading to you, wherever you are, in whichever format you prefer.

The Inconvenient Unborn

Genre: Family Drama / Political Thriller

England in the near future –

Though you may not like what you see.

The Cazenoves and the Wilsons don’t get along, leastways the parents don’t – the teenage kids adore each other, but when the oldest Wilson girl falls pregnant, sparks fly.

Donald Cazenove just happens to be Fred Wilson’s boss, but Fred isn’t without influence himself, being the senior shop steward, and the business is struggling anyway, and a strike could play havoc with Donald’s figures.

“The Inconvenient Unborn” is set in England in the near future where after years of austerity, a left wing Labour Party has been returned to power with a huge majority, and they now intend to change Britain forever. They have a mandate. They have conviction. They have momentum.

And then there’s a state visit to Britain by the most powerful man on the planet, Yuri Premakov, the Russian President, and his precocious and very beautiful film star wife, Tamara, bringing gifts of gas and oil and energy, at a price, and he’s scheduled to visit Lymington on the south coast, where most of this book is set.

So who wins out? The Cazenoves or the Wilsons, and what exactly are Yuri Premakov and his vast entourage up to in Britain?

“The Inconvenient Unborn” will take you on a journey you can barely imagine.

Read an excerpt from The Inconvenient Unborn

To put this into context, Oliver Cazenove, the guy, is eighteen going on nineteen, and still at school, while the girl, Sue, is thirty, with a penchant for younger men. She works behind the bar at Olly’s local pub, which is where he met her.
Oliver was the first to leave the house at twenty to eight. His big hair had dried, but it still had that just washed and fluffy look, but no matter how roughly he treated it, it always seemed to fall back into perfect place, and he was grateful for that.
He was standing self-consciously outside Bestdas Supermarket by five to eight and though he knew his father was not inside, many of the people who worked there were aware he was the boss’s son. The sooner Sue arrived and whisked him away the better, and it was five past when the cream and maroon Cayton Cerisa whizzed up and abruptly stopped before him.
The passenger window was open and she leant across and smiled through it and said, ‘Don’t I know you? Would you like a lift?’
‘Damn right I would,’ grinned Olly, as he jumped inside, as Sue hit the accelerator before he’d even had time to plug in his belt.
‘Where do you fancy going?’ she said, taking her eyes off the road, and glancing at the big kid with the newly washed hair beside her. He smelt good too, looked good and smelt good, what more could a young woman want, and she was still young too at just thirty, though nowhere near as young as him. There was no law against it, was there? He was old enough and perfectly legal and fit and able, and that was all that mattered
‘Don’t mind,’ he said, ‘you choose, but somewhere away from Lymington, eh?’
‘Oh yes,’ she said, ‘somewhere well away from here,’ and she headed across town and zipped onto the Brockenhurst road.
The radio was on, one of the local music stations, and The 27 Club came on.
‘Turn it up!’ he said.
‘Do you like these?’ she said, smiling and shaking her head.
‘They are brill, simply the best!’
‘Don’t see it myself, don’t see what all the fuss is about.’
‘It’s probably an age thing,’ he said, in all seriousness.
‘Oh, thanks, Olly!’
‘Sorry, Sue, I didn’t mean you’re old or anything, ’cos obviously you are not, but I think they appeal more to the teens and twenties.’
‘I’m not that long away from being a twenty,’ she pouted, and accelerated hard through the New Forest, slowing to avoid falling foul of the obligatory radar trap.
‘I know that,’ he said, ‘and you certainly don’t look old either, you look…’ and he left the sentence hanging in the air.
‘Yeah? I look what?’
He stole another peek at her.
‘You look absolutely fab actually, really beautiful,’ and she did too, in a low cut skimpy summer dress that showed off her breasts wonderfully.
Sue’s mouth fell open. Like most women she adored compliments, but one from a young kid like Olly, so sincerely said, well that was something else. She’d always known she’d liked him, but the way he spoke, and his appearance, and the way he looked at her, had an effect that was indeed special.
There followed a few moments of silence before Olly asked, ‘So, where are we going?’
‘There’s a couple of nice pubs on the Totton road from Lyndhurst,’ she said, ‘backing onto the forest. We could have a little walk too, if you want.’
A walk too, if you want, he pondered on her words, in the forest on a warm summer’s evening. What was there not like about that?
‘Great,’ he said. ‘Suits me.’
‘Have you eaten?’
‘Nope. You?’
‘I have not, thought we could get a bite to eat too.’
‘Sounds good, I’ve a huge appetite.’
‘I’ll bet you have,’ she said, grinning across at him, and they both laughed aloud.

About David Carter:

I have been writing for longer than I care to remember. Even as a ten year old child I would design my own newspaper and fill it with family news, much to my mother’s amusement when she once found a copy containing a story that she didn’t fully approve of!

My writing started seriously when I was in business and I was approached to write a column, and that developed into writing columns for newspapers and magazines in many fields, including computing, commodities, farming, property, sport, philately, business and small business, many of which I have actually been paid good money for, and that always brings a nice feeling that never goes away.

My syndicated online articles have now been read by over 300,000 people across the globe and show no sign of slowing down.

It was a fairly small step after that to writing books and I have now written more than a dozen, both fiction and non fiction, and I try to write and complete at least one full length book every year.

Like most writers and aspiring writers I have many more in the pipeline, both part finished, abandoned, or in an unedited state, and finding the time to complete them is always the big enemy there.

Ideally, I would like to find a literary agent who could assist me in taking my writing to the next level, so if you are out there and you like what you see and read then do please get in touch.

Besides writing I sell books for a living and currently have more than 10,000 titles in the house and please don’t ask me where they all are because the simple answer is that they are pretty much everywhere!

I am currently working on a new Inspector Walter Darriteau novel and after that I may go back to writing a sequel to Gringo Greene, though ordinarily I prefer to write something completely fresh, rather than revisiting old ground.

It always amazes me that someone like Lee Child can write book after book featuring the same character and similar adventures, though all best wishes to him for he has been incredibly successful.

'Levant Fever: True Stories From Syria's Underground' by Wajdy Mustafa

Levant Fever is a memoir from the political underground darkness of Assad’s Syria. Seen through the eyes of a boy growing into a man, in the middle of feverish historic events. Not widely understood, or told before in the West but at the roots of the current conflicts. The narrative grips the reader with its honesty, brutality and beauty. The author describes his own journey, reflections and life stories told to him whilst he was held without trial for 14 years, as a political prisoner in several prisons. These included Palmyra, noted by Amnesty International as one of the most oppressive prisons in the world.

The work is an enthralling and informative mosaic reflecting the colours, sects, religions, politics, legends and geography of the Levant. The journey spans the areas deserts, coastline, mountains and forests. It speaks of family, friendship, love, hope, fear, torture, hiding and escaping. A truly human tale of a life well lived, a life of conscience, courage and endurance and ultimately one of triumph of the human spirit.

'Protecting Donald Trump (Celebrity Supernatural Book 5)' by Anne Kelleher

Blurb:

When a candidate for the highest office in the land needs supernatural protection, a rag-tag misfit finds herself part of a security team who turn out to be a pack of werewolves. But that's not the real surprise waiting for her to discover....

http://amzn.to/1Mn0XtR

About the author:

Born and raised at the South Jersey shore, Anne Kelleher has been writing from the time she could read. Her first novel, about a pair of pirate sisters who sailed the Carribean looking for love and adventure, was completed when she was in high school. 'The Long Journey' by Cara J. Swanson

Political / Non Fiction
Date Published: March 2014

Imagine a world with no electricity...no cell phones...no computers. A world still devastated by the effects of global pollution, of massive climate change, of widespread genetic manipulation, of nuclear war. Imagine a world where WE are the ones in the history books.

What will they write about you? Join the Seeker Khadija and her Seeker-Partner, the Gen-a-wolf Ula, as they track a thief into the dangerous Highlands that border the White River. They are to take the thief back west, to the prison of Valley City - the last city on the continent and the sole remaining vestige of civilization. Valley City was built by the head of the North American Corporation just before a series of short and brutal wars that marked final global economic and environmental collapse; what is now referred to as The End. Khadija and Ula live in a world where electricity and technology exist only in stories from the old days, and the leaders of Valley City are said to be descended from the wisest of the Before People. But they are about to discover that everything they've been taught, and everything they think they know about the world around them, is not quite as it seems.

What will they write about you?

Khadija and Ula live in a world where electricity and technology exist only in stories from the old days, and the leaders of Valley City are said to be descended from the wisest of the Before People. It is a world of Gennys - genetically manipulated creatures - left behind in the aftermath of the third and final War. Some, like Ula, are from a line bred for their courage, their strength, their fearlessness in the face of battle, but many were intended for more malignant purposes. It is a world where "muties" are commonplace; a world of lifeless dirt and dead seas. It is a world where humans and their kin barely survived mankind's foolishness, and the very planet is still attempting to recover.
Along their journey, Khadija will discover that everything she's been taught about what caused The End, and what came after, is not the truth. Even the thief, and his crime, are not what they seem to be. Both Khadija and Ula will have to decide where their loyalties lie, and how far they are willing to go to seek true justice in this new and frightening world.

'The Reagan Casualties: Overseas Atrocities of the Great Communicator' by Jacob Klezaras

Blurb:

In his 1985 State of the Union address, President Reagan famously proclaimed, "Freedom is not the sole prerogative of a chosen few; it is the universal right of all God's children." Despite this bold declaration, Reagan’s actions proved detrimental to the cause of human freedom all over the world. In this short but compelling polemic, Klezaras examines The Gipper’s record abroad from a perspective of human rights, shining light on his administration’s wrongdoings from Haiti to Iraq. President Reagan, the facilitator of genocide, the sponsor of terrorism, the abettor of death squads and steadfast ally of despots and warlords far and wide is summarily exposed – and the myth of Ronald Reagan as a crusader for global liberty is expertly laid to rest.

'November Surprise' Book Tour - Review and Giveaway

Photobucket

Welcome to the Reading Addiction Blog Tour for Laurel Osterkamp's book November Surprise. It is the full-length novel whose companion novella, Campaign Promises, I reviewed a couple of months ago. [Read a review of that here.]

Chick Lit / Womens Fiction

Title: November Surprise

Author: Laurel Osterkamp

Date Published: 8/2012

Synopsis:

For Lucy Jones, the distinction between love and politics is hazy at best. Both can be all-consuming, and either can lead to a heart-breaking loss or an exhilarating win. Whatever the case, if you’re seen as a loser, you probably are one. Lucy first learns this lesson in 1988, when she’s a shy girl, battling a high school bully and rooting for Dukakis. Through the years Lucy will experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat as she makes the choices that define her. Meanwhile, she also struggles to define her relationship with Monty, who comes in and out of her life like the changes in public opinion. Is Monty simply a one-night stand, a kindred spirit, or the love of her life? And by 2008, can he offer her a change to believe in?

Over the course of twenty years and six presidential elections, Lucy grows and adjusts with the times. Filled with snarky political and pop-culture references, November Surprise is about the journey we take to believe in a candidate, in love, and in ourselves.

November Surprise is a companion piece to Campaign Promises, which is free on Amazon. They can be read in either order. Both have a liberal slant.

Read an excerpt:
Monty and I have been dancing together all evening. The slow songs are the best, but we also do the Macarena and even the Chicken Dance. I can’t stop laughing the entire time I’m quacking my hands.

Jack and his new wife, Petra, have fed each other cake. Petra has thrown her bouquet, and all the toasts have been given. The night is winding down, and Monty leads me off the dance floor.

“I’m really glad neither of us had dates,” he says.

“Yeah, me too.” My heart beats just a little bit faster than normal.

“And I’m sorry about earlier. Hitting on you like that. It was clumsy. Will you forgive me?” His face is flushed and his tie is loosened. I’m sure I’ve noticed before how good looking he is, but this is the first time I’ve let myself appreciate it.

“There’s nothing to forgive.” I look around, make sure nobody is watching, and then I stand on my tip-toes and plant a kiss on his cheek. When he doesn’t flinch or pull away, I give him the barest whisper of a kiss on the lips.

It’s all the encouragement he needs.

With a conspiratorial smile, he takes my hand and leads me outside the reception hall. I follow willingly.

When we get to a dark, hidden spot, he wraps his arms around my waist and kisses me deeply. I can feel it everywhere, my entire body is tingling, my knees are weak, and I’m sure that at any moment, my heart will explode.

I don’t want him to stop. But he does.

“Where are you staying tonight?” he asks.

“I was going to drive back to my parents’ house.”

“Hmm…” he leans in and kisses me some more. I press up against him like I can’t get close enough. He tilts his head back ever so slightly, so he can talk. “That’s a long drive. Do you want to stay with me, instead?”

“You have a hotel room?”

“It’s close to the airport,” he whispers. “I fly back to New York really early tomorrow.” Then he baby kisses my eyes, nose, and chin.

I don’t answer immediately. I’m trying to steady my breathing. “So you can make a clean get away?”

“It’s not like that.” he smiles. “And you haven’t even said yes, yet.”

But he knows I’m going to. “You can’t ever tell Jack,” I say.

“He just got married, Lucy. Do you really think he’ll care?”

I rub my hands down his back and across the taut muscles in his arms. “I never had sex with him, and we dated for months. If he finds out you and I had a one night stand…”

Monty cuts me off with another kiss. “I promise I’ll never tell him,” he murmurs, between kisses.

We make out a few seconds more, but our kissing is interrupted when I’m consumed with a fit of giggles.

“What’s so funny?” Monty asks.

I shake my head. “Sorry. It just occurred to me. I’m about to do it with the homecoming king.”

Monty chuckles. “Does that turn you on?”

“Yeah,” I admit. “Kind of. Is that okay?”

He kisses my neck. I tilt my head back and sigh in pleasure.

“Are you kidding?” His lips are a mere centimeter from my skin as he mumbles, and his arms tighten around me even more. “If I had known, I would have worn my crown.”

Now we’re both laughing.

“You know this isn’t the sort of thing I usually do…”

He raises his face so he’s looking me in the eye. “I know,” he says, and he smiles.

Crinkles form around his green eyes, and I feel a moment of panic. There’s no way I’m casual enough to be with him for just one night.

“Let’s make it special, okay?” He reaches down and clasps my hand, and I let him lead me somewhere, again. This time, I follow him to the parking lot. Tonight, I’d follow him anywhere.

*My thoughts**

This book and Campaign Promises complement each other. When you read the two of them together, you feel like you have Lucy's entire story. Each book can stand on its own and gives you a good idea what is going on in Lucy's life as she navigates the tumultuous political world while calming some chaos in her own world. Lucy is relatively likeable and you always want to know more about your favorite characters.

You follow her story based on the major election years, therefore getting her life in four-year snippets. As you watch her grow and mature, you find yourself also reminiscing about your own life during each of those campaigns. You may ever find yourself reflecting on your own personal growth at those times as a comparison point.

To say these books have a liberal slant is putting it somewhat mildly. Nevertheless, it is an entertaining read that is quite timely this year.
