Ecopsychologist Dr. Margo Updike loses herself in a shadow life after her daughter’s tragic death. Then the apparent orphan exhibits signs of neglect and worse, prompting Maggie’s vow to protect and heal her—no matter the cost.

The arrival of a mysterious man claiming to be Sorcha’s father upends Maggie’s life. As a serial killer’s victims begin surfacing in Seal Cove, Jax must curb his suspicions to enlist Maggie as a profiler.

Will Jax and Maggie find the murderer before he strikes again? With Morrissey’s secrets trapping Maggie on destructive shoals between reality and legend, can she grasp his true nature before losing her chance to rebuild a life worth living? To what depths—and heights—will she go for a daughter, a beloved man and, ultimately, her humanity?

Award-winning writer Janine Donoho grew up navigating extremes—perhaps due to the ups-and-downs of her San Franciscan birthplace. That Escher landscape primed her to embrace imaginary worlds. With one foot planted in fuzzy science and the other in invented realms, she inhabits the land of WHAT IF. Published in novel-length and short fiction, along with essays, Janine pursues the thumps that echo in the night—and writes about those, too.

With her intrepid husband, Italian greyhound and tuxedo cat, Janine makes her home in the spectacular Okanogan highlands of Washington State. Mountain lions, coyotes, and bears—oh, my!

ABOUT THE HIDDEN LIBRARY:

Sometimes, the rabbit hole is deeper than expected . . .

Alice Reeve and Finn Van Brunt have tumbled into a life of secrets. Some secrets they share, such as their employment by the clandestine organization known as The Collectors’ Society. Other secrets they carry within them, fighting to keep buried the things that could change everything they think they know.

On the hunt for an elusive villain who is hell-bent on destroying legacies, Alice, Finn, and the rest of the Society are desperate to unravel the mysteries surrounding them. But the farther they spiral down this rabbit hole, the deeper they fall into secrets that will test their loyalties and pit them against enemies both new and old.

Secrets, they come to find, can reveal the deadliest of truths.

Excerpt:
We are about to open the conference room door and enter the hallway when he stops. He turns to me, his lovely eyes achingly sincere. “I want to take you on a date when all of this craziness is over. A real one. We’ve kind of gone about this all backwards, haven’t we?”

One corner of my mouth lifts up. “Are you saying you’d like to court me?”

There is no playfulness to his face, no quirk to his own lips. My heart flutters at his seriousness. “Yes.”

He wants to court me.

Too many emotions rush around in a caucus race throughout my body. I have no doubts of Huckleberry Finn Van Brunt’s feelings toward me. I understood them two minutes ago just as well as I did this morning when I woke up and from the night before and from the day in Wonderland where he said, in not so many words, that he was falling in love with me.

I told him he was my north star, and meant it. He countered we are binaries.

He and I . . . We’ve never said those words, though, not the ones that truly spell out fragile, deep secrets of a heart and soul. Words so easily and yet unfortunately uttered by many, be it to express their appreciation of fried bits of potatoes to sports teams on the television. Words offered so frivolously about a variety of subjects and yet can be the most difficult, most painful, most meaningful, most cherished syllables we gift another person.

I have said these words before, to another man. Another man I still love. One I know, in the deepest confines of my heart, that I will love until the last breath escapes my body. A man who courted me in secret and then publicly in the face of astonishment, disapproval, confusion, and, in the end, prophesies.

I have willingly given the man in front of me my heart, though, whether he knows it or not. He now holds it in his hands, and while I pray he is my future, there is still a part of me that bucks in conflicted confusion and delight by this declaration of his.

He wants to court me.

And yet, as sweet and romantic as such a gesture might be, I require no such formalities. My affections for Finn Van Brunt have already solidified into something real and wonderful and meaningful.

'The Waist Management System' by Dr. Peter Windross

The Waist Management System - by Dr Peter Windross

You are a survival machine. The DNA in your cells has survived for millions of years. It has been copied billions of times. Your ancestors all survived long enough to have offspring. These offspring then survived to grow up and repeat the process. You are the latest in a long line of successful survivors who had children. Who also survived successfully.

You are designed to survive. You are designed to replicate. By this I mean that your body and everything in it is designed to fulfil these functions. Every thought you have and every biological urge you feel are designed to drive you towards putting yourself in optimal situations for reproducing and the survival of your genes.

If your ancestors weren't as good at surviving as their neighbours they would have been the more likely to die out. If they weren't as good at mating and having offspring as their neighbours they would then have been less likely to pass on their genes and nature would unapologetically have weeded them out.

We are all here because our distant relatives were fantastic at surviving infancy, childhood, adolescence, seeking out a mate, having sex and then ensuring that the baby went on to survive infancy, childhood and so on. That's it. There are no other traits which will do better in the world that we all came from. There are no features of your body which don't serve a function towards surviving and passing on your genes. It is not enough to simply replicate. Your offspring need to survive to become fertile and produce successful offspring of their own.

The genes we carry in each of our cells are virtually the same as when we lived on the African plains. We are identical in our bodies and minds to nomadic tribes. It is only forty thousand years ago since we were like this. This is a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms, which means our genes have not had enough time to change in the last 40,000 years. We are not very well adjusted for life in the twenty-first century.

Your genes come from a time when we lived in very hot conditions with limited food and water. We would mainly gather our food. Nuts, berries, fruit and roots. We occasionally managed to kill a large animal like an antelope but small birds and rodents would have been more common fare. In the last forty thousand years we have domesticated animals and learned to farm. We no longer rely on our small group to survive and now have food in abundance. We now cook our food so that twelve hours a day doesn’t need to be spent chewing just to get enough nutrients to survive. This has freed up a lot of time. Machines have made a lot of other things easier. We each live today in greater luxury than Kings and Queens of only a few hundred years ago.

We are still ruled by the emotions and desires that powered us for life on the African plains. We eat whenever we can and our bodies rapidly lay down any excess in fat stores because the next meal might be days or even weeks away. We are driven to fit in with the group for its survival benefits. We are driven to gain social status where we can and to seek out and find the best possible mates to pass on our genes. This is what makes us tick.

Understanding this can help us regain control of our waists once more.

About the author:

Dr Peter Windross lives and works in the South of the UK near the New Forest. A General Practitioner for over ten years, he has a special interest in weight management. He reads more about running in his spare time than is good for him. He is often told that he should get out more, though he obviously thinks that means on the trails.

He's not a very good runner. What he lacks in style, grace and speed he tries to make up for in terrible jokes and enthusiasm. He enjoys trail running and racing. Anything from 5k to multi-day ultra-marathons.

He enjoys writing books about how to do stuff a little better. He is no expert and has made more mistakes than most. He is thus well qualified on really how not to do things 'this way'.

'Chasing the Other Tisdale' by Jessica Jefferson

Chasing the Other Tisdale

by Jessica Jefferson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
She’s the other sister…
Overshadowed by the beauty of her older sister, Lillian is better known as the other Tisdale; unremarkable and unsure how she will ever deliver on the promise of her family's name.
He’s a rake in need of reforming…
Will Colton leads a frivolous existence, embracing notoriety instead of managing his family’s fortune. Determined to forget his financial burden and his father’s growing resentment, he maintains a lifestyle dedicated to pleasure and self-indulgence. When Will is invited to the Tisdale estate for an extended holiday, he never expects to become friends with the forgettable Lillian. But when a family secret comes to light, he must choose between leaving London and protecting the honor of one woman or staying and risking the reputation of another.
Upon his return, Will finds the girl he left behind has come out of the shadows and into her own. Lillian’s finally the center of attention, and not all of it good. With his own reputation in tatters, can a reformed rake lure her out of the hands of London's bachelors and back into his own arms? Can he escape his past and reclaim her heart, or has he lost her forever?
Read an excerpt:
He didn’t try and crawl out of the hole he’d so easily dug for himself. Rather, instead of making an already awkward situation worse, he smiled. It was a cavalier sort of smile—one that she just knew he’d used hundreds of times before to get him out of this sort of trouble. Women were undoubtedly willing to forgive him most transgressions just by a flash of this winning grin.
Lord knew she was.
She’d never before met anyone so handsome, so charming, so…
A bolt of pain shot up her arm, as if God himself was punishing her for having such immoral thoughts.
“Enough,” he said. “We need to get you in front of a doctor. The sooner, the better.”
“Good idea,” she agreed. “How do you suggest we go about doing that?”
“First, we’ll need to secure your arm.”
She nodded. “You mean fashion a sling? I’m sure there’s something around here that we could use as rope. Perhaps ivy? There’s a great deal of it about the estate.”
His hand flew up to his chest. “What do you take me for, some sort of bushman? For heaven’s sake, I’m from Grosvenor Square, not some jungle. I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of how to go about accomplishing something like that.”
Lilly bit her lip. She’d never make it being jostled about without something to steady her arm. “Did you have something else in mind, then?”
Mr. Colton started removing his jacket. “I thought I’d use my shirt. I’ll rip some strips off of it and make the sling out of that.”
“Your shirt,” she repeated, suddenly questioning if she’d indeed suffered a head injury along with her broken arm.
He tossed the jacket to the ground behind him. “Yes.”
She was confused. “But then what will you wear?”
He was unfastening his waistcoat. “Nothing, I suppose .”
'When Irish Eyes Are Haunting (A Krewe of Hunters Novella)' by Heather Graham
When Irish Eyes are Haunting
About IRISH EYES ARE HAUNTING:
Devin Lyle and Craig Rockwell are back, this time to a haunted castle in Ireland where a banshee may have gone wild—or maybe there's a much more rational explanation—one that involves a disgruntled heir, murder, and mayhem, all with that sexy light touch Heather Graham has turned into her trademark style.
Excerpt:
“You’re right; we’ve just arrived,” Rocky told Devin softly, his words bringing her back from her thoughts. They were both seated cross-legged on the soft, rich green grass of the lawn area that surrounded the pit and the grating. Rocky took her hands, his eyes on Gary across the rising yellow flames of the fire between them. “And,” he added, lowering his voice still further, “this is an excellent way for me to begin, to understand the lay of the land, so to speak.” He hugged her more tightly to him, as if he was aware of the chill she’d felt earlier when looking up at the walls.
He was aware, of course. He was Rocky, intuitive—and much better at this than she, much more experienced.
“So then tonight,” Gary announced, “eh, you’ve learned about the Tuatha Dé Danann, the great race of Irish supernatural kings and queens, gods and goddesses, if you will, those of the distant past, revered ’til the coming of Christianity! Ye’ve learned of Dearg-Due—an Irish female vampire known long before Bram Stoker—an Irishman, I might add—created Dracula. We’ve talked about our Irish headless horseman—the Dullahan. Many more, and of course, those well-known, our leprechauns and our banshees! I’m now Gary the Ghost, signing off, wishing you sweet dreams—and reminding you, of course, that gratuities are not at all necessary, but deeply appreciated.”
“There’s a man worthy of gratuities,” Rocky said, coming to his feet and reaching down a hand to help Devin up to hers. He pulled her into his arms. “Love it here. So far, it’s a great honeymoon,” he told her, green eyes dancing.
“I’ll make it up to you,” Devin promised.
Rocky laughed. “I mean it—I love it. Who gets to stay in the haunted master’s suite of a family-owned castle? Sit beneath a crystal moon and hear old-fashioned storytelling in such atmospheric conditions? Then again, who gets to bathe in a great old claw-foot tub like the one up in our room? Okay, maybe they have those other places, but it’s pretty cool looking, don’t you think?”
Devin grinned. “Definitely. Yes, we’ll put that on the evening’s agenda.”
It began as a fever of unknown origin that its victims dubbed “the Heat,” but as it burned through most of the world’s population, it became known simply as “the Dying.” And for those left behind, the struggle has just begun….
In the aftermath of the Dying, survivor Jessica Monroe is protected and guided by the gentle voice of an invisible being she thinks of as her guardian angel. When she reaches the sanctuary he’s provided for her, however, she realizes that her unseen companion is no angel at all. The destruction of humanity was only the first step in a much larger plan, and now Jessica must struggle to discover her own role in a frightening new world where everything has changed.
Excerpt
Now was the time to say a few words, but nothing seemed to come to mind. I couldn’t even remember the Lord’s Prayer, or more than the first few words of the Twenty-third Psalm.
“The Lord is my shepherd,” I began, then shook my head. What came next? The lines were all jumbled together in my head, nonsense syllables that sounded like something straight out of “Jabberwocky.” And what did it matter, anyway? We weren’t a religious family; we went to Christmas Eve services some years and some years not, maybe Easter. I’d gone to Sunday school when I was really little, but my parents hadn’t even bothered with that when Devin came along.
For the longest time I stood there under the oak, the sun disappearing altogether, deep dusk falling upon the yard. Then I moved, and the motion-sensor light mounted to the side of the garage flashed on.
“I love you all,” I said finally, then set the Waterford vase and the football trophy on top of their grave.
After that, I went back inside and shut the door behind me. It seemed to echo in the unnatural stillness of the house, and I realized it was hardly ever this quiet — someone always had the TV on in the background, or there was music playing, or somebody talking on the phone. Now the quiet pounded against my eardrums, and I realized how big a three-bedroom, two-thousand-square-foot house could feel when you were the only one in it.
The only one in the world….
The thought whispered through my mind, and I did my best to ignore it. Surely if I were immune, and not just having extremely delayed onset for some reason, that meant other people had to be immune, too. How many? I couldn’t begin to guess. I didn’t know the mortality rate of the disease. Even if 99.9% of the population was dead, that would leave around a thousand people still alive in the greater Albuquerque area, if I was doing my mental math correctly.
I turned on the overhead lights in the kitchen, then went through the house, turning on all the lamps. Maybe that wasn’t the smartest thing to do — maybe advertising my presence would do more harm than good. But I couldn’t sit there in the dark, not after everything I’d been through that day. Besides, when I peeked out through the curtains, I saw mine wasn’t the only house on the street that was all lit up. Most likely the others just had their lights on because no one was around to turn them off, but it did make mine seem less conspicuous.
“Are you there?” I asked of the darkness. Even a voice that was only a product of my imagination was better than this deep, deep silence, the kind of quiet you should never hear if you lived in a big city.
No reply, of course. My gaze shifted to the remote control, still lying where I’d last dropped it on the coffee table. I didn’t quite dare to turn on the television, not after what I’d seen the last time around. I could only imagine how bad it must be by now.
But there was still the stereo, and all the CDs my parents wouldn’t get rid of, despite Devin and me telling them all that plastic just took up space and that they should just rip all their music off those CDs and then play it through Apple TV or something. And now I had to be grateful for their stubbornness, because that meant I could get up and choose something to blot out the silence. My father liked country, but old country, like Hank Williams and Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline, and my mother preferred classical. That sounded better to me right then, so I found her favorite, Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, and put that on.
It actually was better, with the sound of an orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy on the piano overriding that awful stillness. Or at least it was better until I realized that no one would ever play that piece live again, that there would be no more symphony orchestras or Arcade Fire concerts or anything, ever again.
“Oh, God,” I gasped, pushing myself up from the couch and running into the kitchen, where I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water in my face. As if that could begin to help. It was all too big to comprehend, so awful and enormous that I could literally feel the horror of it beginning to sink in, like some  noxious chemical seeping into my skin.
And then it was as though strong, invisible arms wrapped around me, bringing with them a soothing warmth. Unseen lips brushed against my hair, and I heard the voice again.
Be strong, my love. Be strong for just a while longer.
Just as suddenly, the presence was gone. I held on to the tile of the kitchen counter, feeling the cool surface beneath my fingertips. In that moment, I truly wondered if I’d lost my mind.
What other explanation could there be?
Release Date: 12/29/15
New Adult
225 pages
Summary from Goodreads:
What do you do when you fall in love with your best friend’s boyfriend?
That is the question that twenty-six year-old Justine Sterling has been asking herself ever since the day she met David Whitman, her best friend Renee’s boyfriend. Justine is determined to ignore her growing feelings for the irresistibly charming David, until one night, when she finds herself in the bed of the one person she should stay away from.
When Justine and David’s affair ends in heartbreak, Justine is forced to repair the damaged friendship with her best friend. In doing so, she learns that right and wrong decisions aren’t always black and white, and sometimes you have to follow your heart to see where it leads.
Read an excerpt:
I crept back into David’s bed, trying my hardest not to wake him. Half of me wanted to slip my clothes on, sneak out the front door, and pretend this never happened, but I knew we had to talk.
David stirred beside me, and his eyes fluttered open. I waited for his reaction to mirror mine, but all he did was smile and wrap his arms around me in a half-hug.
“Good morning beautiful,” he mumbled, cradling his head in my neck.
When I didn’t respond, he looked up at me with sleepy eyes. Although he looked adorable in his half-conscious state, all my feelings for him had temporarily subsided. I just stared at him, unable to speak.
“Oh no,” he said. “Don’t look at me like that.”
I lay back on the bed and rested my head on the pillow, turning to face him. “David, I… we…” I sighed. “We should never have…”
“Listen,” he interjected, propping his head on his elbow. “I know what you’re thinking, and I know how you’re probably feeling right now. But I need you to know that I meant everything I said last night.”
And there it was, my biggest fear, staring me right in the face. Instead of David agreeing that it was all a mistake and suggesting we never mention it again, it was even worse.
David was in love with me, too.
I didn’t know what to say. No matter which direction I took, I couldn’t win. I couldn’t tell him I loved him, yet I couldn’t pretend I didn’t.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to respond.
I heard her before I saw her. It happened so fast I didn’t have time to react. The sound of footsteps in the hall. Doors closing and opening. Watching my best friend’s expression change from excitement to confusion to shock. All in a matter of seconds.
And for as long as I live, I’ll never be able to erase that image from my mind.
