Realm of Dragons: Fight for the Crown by L.C. Conn

Did somebody say dragons? Check out an excerpt from the fantasy book Realm of Dragons by L.C. Conn and then download your own copy. Be sure to follow the tour for even more and leave your questions and comments along the way. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

The Realm of Dragons is in peril from hidden plots and conspirators, which threaten not only the crown, but the dragons that are at the very heart of it.

Teagan Loinsigh, long ago banished from her magical home of dragons now lives on Earth. Her dreams and memories of the great creatures are put down to fantasies and an overactive imagination, until one day she comes across a creature so unlike any other in the land she lives in. A baby dragon.

Muniath Magaoidh, a Dragon Warden fallen so low by a failed mission, must be brought back from his despair to retrieve what is lost.

Scetis Mordha, alone in the world since he was a child. Finds himself in the middle of intrigue and conspiracy against The Realm of Dragons.

Tying them all together is a dragon. Not just a dragon but The King of Dragons.

Can these four save The Realm of Dragons?

Read an excerpt:
“This could all be settled now. Between you and me. There should be no more waste of lives. If you conquered this way, you would only be seen as a tyrant and most of those who were left would never have your respect.”

“Are you seriously suggesting that we duel to see who gets the kingdom?” Orcades scoffed at the idea.

“Yes,” Scetis replied.

“You, who have never held a sword or killed anyone. Against me, a seasoned warrior?” he looked around him as he laughed, most of the men joined in.

“That is exactly what I am proposing,” Scetis said. “Where are you?” he called in his mind to Squirt.

“Close. Don’t worry, I’ll come to your rescue,” Squirt replied.

“Easy for you to say.” Scetis sent out the thought. “So, what do you say?” he once more addressed Orcades.

“This will be the easiest fight I’ve ever won!” Orcades armour creaked as he hauled himself from his saddle.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Ide asked him in a hushed voice.

“I have to, and don’t you interfere. Squirt will be helping me.”

“I have only just found you, don’t do anything stupid.”

“I have a plan,” he told her without any bravado or grin. He stepped forward to meet his opponent.

Now married, L.C. moved from New Zealand to Perth, Western Australia, and became a stay at home mum. While caring for her family and after battling breast cancer, a story was born from the kernel of a dream. The first book of The One True Child Series was begun, and just kept blooming into seven completed stories, which have garnered great reviews. She continues her career with more stories waiting in the wings to be released.

When she finds an ancient scroll that mentions a human power ritual conducted deep in the homeland of the elves, she gathers her dragon allies and journeys to see the king of that great forest-dwelling race.

Welcomed by a handsome royal cloaked in dark magic, will Vahly find answers or will a twisted and powerful elven lord destroy her chance at saving the world?

Excerpt

There, on the ground, was a shape that was not rock or smoke or golden earthblood.

Or dragon.

Her lips parted in a silent gasp.

Two arms. Two legs. Supple flesh instead of scales.

Crouching by the body, Vahly moved a curtain of obsidian hair away from the creature’s face.

A pointed ear.

Vahly’s tongue didn’t want to work.

It was an elf.

She shook him hard, finally forcing her mouth to make sounds. “Wake up, fool! You’re going to die out here and I’m not about to go down with you. I thought your kynd was known for wisdom. Why in the world are you out here by yourself?”

He could have asked her the same thing.

The elf was nothing like she’d imagined. Yes, he had the glowing elegance of the illustrations she’d seen from the library scrolls. His exposed arms showed powerful muscles and his features were just as chiseled as recorded in dragon history.

But there was an age to him, a feeling of having weathered many storms, a burnished look to his fine, clear skin and proud, beardless chin. His presence weighed on her like a winter cloak, heavy but somehow comforting.

A line between his sharply slanted eyebrows made her think he had experienced great frustration in his lifetime. She hadn’t thought to see that in an elf. This wasn’t the picture she’d cobbled from her research.

He was so much … more.

Sebastian and the Tarot Cards - Thoughts by Debra Kristi, author of the Mystic's Carnival Collective Stories

moorigad tour banner

Sebastian and the Tarot Cards by Debra Kristi

Hi! I’m thrilled to be here and thought it would be fun to touch on Sebastian’s deck of tarot cards. He reads the cards for Mystic’s Carnival patrons and can be rather theatrical, with skull makeup and a cloak. Maybe he’s channeling his dark side. Maybe he’s trying to hide his face. Or maybe he’s just looking for a larger tip. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions―for now.

To make the cards believable to the reader, Sebastian had to show just enough without bogging the reader down with too much information. I decided to give him his own style to reading the cards. It was a little scary. There is always the chance that someone who knows the details a thousand times better will complain, but it was a chance I was willing to take…after much research.

One does not just write a tarot card reader into book and give them nothing to work with. Sebastian had to know his stuff, which meant I had to know my stuff. I poured through books and went to reading, seen the cards dealt countless ways. The last reading I had done, the guy threw the cards on the table every which way. The entire deck! He read them based on which cards fell where and at what angle and in which order. He was so fast it was hard to follow, but the experience really fueled my muse where Sebastian was concerned.

Last year I traveled to New Orleans to research a different book. But of course, New Orleans is a treasure trove for someone in Sebastian’s line of work and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to explore. I found my way to a shop perfect for furthering my education in the art. They stocked everything I could possibly imagine needing. I picked up several decks that day. I would later come to realize Sebastian used a custom deck created especially for him and his purposes. Those purposes being other than reading the cards for the patrons.

I had the brilliant artist Carrie Osborne create some creepy, cool skull cards for Sebastian. The dragon skull ended up on the cover (of course!).

Do you think Sebastian should get a deck of cards based on the carnival and the cast? Wouldn’t that be something special?

I had so much fun writing these books and sharing about my tarot card experience! I want to take a quick moment to thank the readers and fans, because you are the most important part of being a writer. Also, a huge thank you for having me here today! It has been a pleasure, and all the support is truly awesome. Wishing you all kinds of crazy magic in your daily life.

Linda K. Hopkins, author of 'Bound By a Dragon' tells us what we need to know about dragons

Important Facts about Dragons

Not all dragons are the same, and in fact, there are two different and distinct dragon species - the Asian dragon and the European dragon. These two species differ quite widely from each other. The first, the Asian dragon, is more serpentine in form, with a very long, sleek body. It has four legs and deer-like horns on its head, but it does not have wings, and they do not breathe fire. Asian dragons can control the air around them, and it is through this ability that they can take flight.

European dragons, on the other hand, have much larger, bulkier bodies and huge wings which allow them to fly over vast distances. They also have very long and incredible strong tails. If you have read Bound by a Dragon, you will know that the dragons in this story are European dragons. The rest of this discussion pertains specifically to the European dragon.

As we know, dragons can breathe fire and flame. The reason for this is that dragons are created from fire. Their very essence is fire, and their physical form contains the flame. If you draw close to a dragon, you will feel the heat that emanates from its skin. Although a dragon can keep the flame contained, it will breathe fire when roused by anger or any other strong emotion. If you find yourself near an angry dragon, run for water!

The neck, back, tail, and legs of a dragon are covered in tough, overlapping scales, creating an impenetrable armor. It is almost impossible to harm a dragon by attacking the backside of the creature. The underside of the dragon, the stomach, is covered in thick, leathery skin. It is still very difficult to harm a dragon from the front, since dragons will naturally protect this more vulnerable area.

Dragons have huge wingspans which allow them to glide on air currents for very long distances. It is commonly believed that dragons have leathery wings, like that of a bat, but the wings of a dragon are actually far finer. If you get a chance to examine a dragon's wings closely, you will see that the wing surface seems woven from many strands of something resembling very strong silk, resulting in a very thin, but incredible strong surface. The wings are also very light, and can easily be folded against the dragon's back. The wings catch and reflect light so that when the dragon is seen in flight is often shines and glimmers.

The dragon in Bound by a Dragon is gold, but dragons come in almost any color, and this coloring is passed through the genes. The rarest dragon color is white, although there have been a very small number of reported sightings of albino dragons.

Dragons tend to live very long lives, and it is not uncommon for dragons to live five or six hundred years. The oldest reported dragon lived to 897 years, but since this is based on oral tradition, reported by humans living in the same vicinity as the dragon and passed from one generation to another, this is very difficult to verify.

It is often said that dragons are cunning and sly, but this is not strictly true. Like humans, dragons have individual personalities and character traits, so while some may be cunning, others will exhibit more benevolent attributes. They are known to be intelligent, and with such long lives have developed a very accurate understanding of humankind.

Dragons are carnivores and require vast amounts of meat to live, but dragons have been known to eat meat other than human flesh, such as beef, mutton and venison. It would seem that dragons can exist for long periods without feasting on human flesh, although they do seem to have a need for it once in a while. Whether this is because they prefer the taste of human flesh or because they need it to survive is not understood.

The most interesting quality about dragons is the properties of their blood. It has long been understood that dragon blood has the ability to heal even potentially fatal wounds, but it is not understood how this occurs. Further study may reveal the answer to this perplexing question, but since dragons are not very accommodating in allowing scientists samples of their blood, the answers may still be a long time coming. What we do know is, if you can get your hands on dragon blood, hang on to it for all you are worth.

Bound by a Dragon
By
Linda K. Hopkins

BLURB:

The dragon turned its head and seemed to look straight at Keira. Pulling her arm out of her sister’s, she drew herself upright and stared straight back, meeting the golden eye of the dragon before it turned its enormous body in a slow, fluid motion and lazily flew towards the mountains.

A dragon has moved into the neighborhood of Keira's small, medieval village, unsettling the residents as they fear for their safety. All except Keira, who is fascinated by the creature, both dangerous and beautiful. But when Aaron Drake decides to take up residence in his ancestral home of Storbrook Castle, set deep in the nearby mountains, Keira finds herself unsettled by the handsome stranger. Why did he decide to move to Storbrook, almost eighty years after it was last inhabited, and does the dragon really live in the caves below the castle?

Read an excerpt:
As she watched the mighty beast before her, the dragon bent its neck into a graceful arch downward, bringing its face closer to Keira’s eye level, its golden cat-like eyes watching her intently. Keira quelled the desire to step back, instead keeping her feet firmly planted as she continued to gaze at the dragon.

“Why did you take me?” she finally asked, shuddering at the thought of what might have been. She lifted her hand to her cheek, feeling the sting of scratches scored down her face. A flash of sharp teeth made her draw in her breath as the dragon replied with a growl.

“I’m sorry Keira,” it said. “I should have been there sooner. When I think of what that boy was about to do …” The dragon stopped and pulled in a breath. “I shouldn’t have left him alive!”

Keira trembled at the thought. “But why?” she said. “What does it matter to you?”

The dragon stared at her for a long moment, until finally it breathed out a sigh, sending sparks flaring from its nostrils. “Come closer, Keira,” it said.

Keira hesitated, wondering what the dragon intended to do with her.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” the dragon said.

She looked at the mighty beast before her and suppressed a shudder. Its claws rested on the ground, razor-sharp and menacing. She could see its pointed teeth and knew that it could rip her to shreds in an instant, or burn her to a crisp with one hot breath. One swipe of its massive tail could send her flying through the air, or leave her broken on the ground. Keira knew that the dragon could wield mighty power with barely any effort, striking fear into the hearts of many brave men. But as she looked at the dragon, gazing into eyes that blazed like the fire it breathed, she felt her fears slowly melt away.

Read an excerpt from 'Drake: An Oral History of the Dragon War (Episode 1: Emergence)' by Mike Kraus

DrakeBookTourbanner

drake_series_book_1_cover_v1Episode 1: Emergence

Lost to myth and legend, few believed that dragons were real, and still fewer believed they could ever return. When a covert operation resulted in their release, all the might and power of the world couldn't hold them back. With the world on the brink of defeat, the few who remain must grapple against all odds to combat an enemy that nearly drove us to the brink of extinction once before - and which is about to do so again.

From bestselling author Mike Kraus (Final Dawn, Prip'Yat) comes a new, five-book series: Drake: An Oral History of the Dragon War. In what can be best described as "World War Z with dragons," Drake portrays a realistic, scientific history of the emergence of the drakes, and humanity's subsequent battle just to stay alive. The gripping 5-part series will take you around the world, examining the history of the war from all sides: political, military, civilian, scientific and more.

Read an excerpt:
This is a leviathan?

This is a leviathan’s head. Nobody likes to see these things, even the bits and pieces of them, so I keep this big boy down here.

Why would you keep it?

I don’t really know. I come down here sometimes when I start losing perspective. Looking at this thing helps remind me just how close we came to the end.

This looks almost as big as a Red drake skull.

And this is just a baby. The big ones were… big. Very big. I don’t even want to think about how big their queen must have been.

What were the leviathans responsible for?

You mean besides tearing apart everything bigger than a tuna that the snakes didn’t get their hands on? If the weewees didn’t destroy a ship, a leviathan sure as hell would. The leeches could only swim at about twenty, twenty-five knots. Most tankers and cruise ships can’t go much over twenty, so they were fair game. But if you had a ship that could maintain thirty knots or more, you didn’t have to worry about having the hull chewed and burned out from underneath you. The next worry was somewhat worse, considering that it involved ships being torn apart and—in the case of smaller ones—completely devoured in just a few bites.

20130531_mikekrausheadshotProfessionally trained as a Systems Engineer, Mike has been a writer his entire life, spending his summers as a child writing of daring adventures and epic science-fiction exploits in a college-ruled notebook instead of playing video games. That love of writing stayed with him until it finally burst forth in the form of "Final Dawn," a thrilling post-apocalyptic series released in an episodic format that has sold over 70,000 copies and counting. Final Dawn was followed by two other stand-alone books, "Prip'Yat" and "Cold Springs," and Mike's latest work is a new five-part series titled "Drake: An Oral History of the Dragon War." Mike currently lives in Mississippi with his wife and three children and spends his days writing (of course), programming and tinkering on his PC.
