Miracles are Golden

By Catherine Lanigan

Women's Fiction, Christmas
ebook, 100 Pages
February 2, 2016

This heartwarming story is about eight-year-old Jimmy Longwood, who has fallen in love with a Golden Retriever puppy. When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. Jimmy goes to heaven and meets an angel who decides to send Jimmy back to earth as the very Golden Retriever he’d wanted for his own and to learn the one lesson all human beings must learn…unconditional love.

Read an excerpt:

Jimmy glanced at the clock once more as he followed his father
into the kitchen where he sat on a wrought iron Tuscan influenced bar
stool. He leaned on the granite counter top watching his father hiding
presents in the pantry.

“Did you talk to your mother?” John asked.

“We began a discussion about Bubblehead and again I reminded
her that Grandpa and Grandma gave me a hundred dollars for my
birthday this year which puts me over the top for enough money to buy
Bubblehead. Which we can do, Dad, if you’ll just get your coat and
hat…”

“Jimmy,” John sucked in a long breath to cool his frustration.
“No.”

“Dad, this woman came into Mr. Lenza’s shop and she is going to
take Bubblehead! She paid a deposit and everything.”

“Then it’s settled. He’s sold!”

“He’s not gone yet. We can save him!” Jimmy was nearly on the
verge of tears.

John walked around the corner and hugged Jimmy. “Take a deep
breath. There. That’s better. Now, let’s talk about this. Not just you
talking, but me, too.”

“Okay.” Jimmy replied wiping his eyes. “But promise you won’t
use your shrink talk with me, okay?”

“I’ll save it for my patients. Agreed?” John smiled.

“Okay,” Jimmy sniffed.

“Please try to understand, Jimmy. We can afford a puppy, even one
as expensive as this eight hundred dollar Golden Retriever. And
despite the fact that your mother and I truly believe a puppy is an
enormous responsibility…”

“I’m up to it, Dad. Honest. I’ll feed him, walk him, pick up his
poop, give him a bath. All of it.”

“That’s easy when he’s little, son, but a Golden Retriever is a big
dog when he’s grown. What if he’s a really big one? Over a hundred
pounds. Just his grooming is a chore.”

“I would love every second,” Jimmy replied looking down at his
shoes.

“Somehow, I believe you would,” John said. “Still, it’s a big
responsibility.”

“Dad, how can I learn responsibility if I don’t have a dog?”

“Jimmy, you don’t even clean your room. And there’s nothing in
there to feed!”

Jimmy brightened. “Precisely! That’s why I don’t feel the need to
bond with things in my room by fussing with them all the time. I mean
what does that say about my psyche if I’m obsessed with material
things?”

“Where is your mother when I need her?”

“She said court was running late,” Jimmy replied. “Dad, I love
Bubblehead. He loves me.”

“That’s impossible for a dog in a pet store to love you. You
haven’t had enough time to form a relationship. He doesn’t know you.
You don’t know him.”

Jimmy looked past his father to the stainless steel appliances. “Not
if you visited him thirty-five times.”

“Is that where you’ve been after school?”

“Dad, this isn’t an ordinary dog. He’s really special.” Jimmy was
so earnest in his plea he didn’t realize he’d started shaking.

John rubbed Jimmy’s shoulders to comfort him. “I can see this is
upsetting you, Jimmy. I’ll tell you what. Your mother and I will look
into all this. Maybe there is something we can work out with the
building supervisor. Which, realistically is a very long shot, but even if
we can’t, then I guess we’d have to move.”

“Move?” Jimmy brightened.

“If having a dog means so much to you, then the only solution I
can see is moving. We would have to find another building, hopefully
as well located as this one is for me and your mother. I don’t want her
traveling by herself to court and back. Plus, she can’t move outside her
jurisdiction.”

“Oh, this is very complicated.”

“It is. But it’s not impossible.”

Jimmy expelled a deep sigh. “I know you are being really great
about this, Dad, but see, it’s Bubblehead I want. And this rich lady is
going to take him away.” Jimmy started crying. “I don’t even own
him, he’s not even mine and I miss him so much already it hurts
inside…here,” he said pointing to his heart.

John enfolded his son into his arms. “I don’t know what to say,
Jimmy. I had no idea you and Bubblehead meant so much to each
other.”

“We do, Dad. We do.”

“I know I’ve always told you that anything is possible. But this
one…”

A fat tear welled in Jimmy’s eye and fell down his cheek. “This
one is impossible.”

“For this puppy, for this Christmas, I’m afraid so.”
