Secrets and Lies

Flames now filled the room, along with the smoke. It was incredibly hot, like an oven. The metal doorknob was beginning to glow.

With tears stinging my eyes I dropped the crystal back in my pocket, picked up the mallet, and swung it with all my strength at the wall. It landed with a satisfying thunk, but only managed to inflict a small dent in the heavy wood.

Trying not to feel discouraged, I repeated the exercise. Again and again I swung, throwing all my weight into the movement.

I couldn't take a full breath. My lungs burned. Tears filled my eyes so I could scarcely see.

Reaching down to pick up my shirt, I draped it over my head and swung again. Finally, I managed to beat a chunk out of the wall.

The flames licked my heels. If I got out of this alive, I would need to take a bath in Nicolas's burn ointment, but I tried not to think about that as I swung again and again.

My swings were getting weaker. I couldn't breathe. Racking coughs had claimed my body and the hole in the wall was still too small.

Sinking to my knees, I struggled to hold on to consciousness, but I was no longer sure if I should. My hands and knees against the floorboards were pure agony. Blackness could only hurt less.

**My thoughts**

I admit that it took me a couple of chapters to get into this sequel. Part of that, though, I think was the exhaustion from traveling, as I read this on both the ferry and the airplane. I will say, though, that once I was reacquainted with the characters, I was sucked in and zipped through the pages.

Cassie made some rash decisions in the first book, and is now dealing with the consequences. She has been forced to grow up pretty quickly and still has many more decisions that face her. She is also still determined to make a name for herself, without acknowledging her magical family. She is downright stubborn about this, but ends up learning some good lessons because of it.

Her relationship wtih Evan continues to evolve. More secrets are revealed, that explain so much about her family and their past. The series continues to be a blend of mystery with a little romance, all with a paranormal bend. The market is inundated with the paranormal genre right now, but something about Cassie Scot is different. I don't feel like I am reading another cookie cutter story with this series. I enjoyed the twists and turns that are leading to yet another book in the series that I look forward to reading.

Author Christine Amsden interviews Evan Blackwood from the Cassie Scot series

I'm pleased to reintroduce you to Evan Blackwood, a powerful sorcerer from Eagle Rock, MO who has once again agreed to a short interview. He spoke with me when my first Cassie Scot novel came out in May 2013. Now he's back, although he has once again made it clear that he will not answer any direct questions about magic.

Christine: Thank you so much for being here again.

Evan: I wish I could say I was happy to be here. You nearly killed Cassie and now, thanks to you, I think she's afraid of me.

Christine: Sorry about that. For those who haven't read Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective, can you tell us why you think so?

Evan: I saved her life. She owes me big time. That makes it impossible for her to deny anything I demand of her and difficult for her to deny me anything she knows I want, even if I don't order it.

Christine: Can't you just let her go?

Evan: Technically, yes.

Christine: So what's the problem?

Evan: I don't want to.

Christine: Hmmm.

Evan: Don't turn this around on me.

Christine: I wouldn't dream of it. So, what are your plans for Cassie?

Evan: I don't know. I've been in love with her for a long time. I thought she felt the same way.

Christine: Her parents did just hurt her. Maybe it's not the right time.

Evan: I hope so. I'm giving her as much space as I can, but other men are showing interest. One of them is a mind mage.

Christine: So I hear you've recently finished an apprenticeship. What do you plan to do now?

Evan: There's a magical unification movement taking place right now to bring order to the magical world. Terrible things happen all the time – people drained of their magic then sold, blood magic, and cursed objects, just to name a few – I want to be a part of stopping it.

Christine: That sounds heroic.

Evan: Maybe. At the moment I'm a bit more focused on Cassie though. Speaking of which, you weren't planning to try to kill her again, were you?

Christine: Spoilers.

Evan: I don't want her hurt.

Christine: Unfortunately, you're more likely to hurt her than I am.

Evan: What does that mean? And don't say “spoilers.”

Christine: All right, all right. Ask your grandmother. She's a seer.

Evan: I did. She's not saying much.

Christine: Grace Blair might.

Evan: Like I'd trust anything she said. She wants Cassie for her grandson.

Christine: In that case, you'll just have to wait and see. And since I've clearly lost control of this interview, that's going to have to be it. Usually, the interviewer asks the questions.

Evan: Wait! Is everything going to work out?

Christine: It's been nice chatting with you again.

Evan: I'm not done yet. I've still got lots of questions.

Christine: How about another little talk when Mind Games come out?

Evan: Maybe. Do you think I'll still be speaking to you at the end of Secrets and Lies?

A scalpel touched a point between the nipples on the cadaver’s chest and drifted north, unzipping the skin exactly seven inches along the sternum. Shadows played out the rest on the concrete walls: the worker selected a heavier device and hovered over the outline of the body, flicking a switch and activating a high, screeching vibration that trailed through the air and disappeared into the silhouette’s chest.

Instantly the hum dropped an octave—ggvvrrrrr, ck-ck, ggvvrrrrr—choking and sputtering as it coughed up particles of bone dust.

Ggvvrrrrr! CK-CK! Ggvvrrrr!

The mist made a macabre Tyndall effect in the lamplight.

Beyond these specks, the worker turned off the electric saw and brought up a wooden box the size of a tea chest, then withdrew something from inside.

Something small.

Something odd.

It was too dark to see what the object was, but the worker handled it nimbly and lowered it into the body’s rib cage.

**My thoughts**

This is one of the best horror books I have read in years. My grandmother lived next to the cemetery, and we often took leisurely strolls back there. I spent my early years playing at a funeral home, because my mother was a church organist who often had to play for funerals. Of course, I was never allowed to play near where they kept the bodies, which helped to add to the creepy factor. I was also an early fan of horror books, starting with Stephen King and V.C Andrews at the tender age of 9, eventually graduating to Edgar Allen Poe, Daphne duMaurier, and Hitchcock movies in my teens. This history made the brief blurb call out to me as a must-read.

Immediately, I was drawn into Camilla's story. I found her circumstances rather odd. I mean, who abandons normal life to move to the middle of nowhere to work in a funeral home, even if she has always been a social outcast? Strange occurrences occur as soon as she sets foot in the small town. I couldn't put the book down, until it was time for me to eat. The first part of the book is definitely not something that you want to read while eating. When I got home again, I picked it back up and again couldn't put it down.

The secrets that are hiding in the basement of the Vincents' home are horrible. The townspeople shun them for what they do, but at the same time expect their help when it suits them. Then, when things go wrong again, they put all of the blame back on the Vincents. Camilla finds out the truth, yet cannot help herself by indulging in their ritual. The consequences are far-reaching and threaten to ruin everything.

There are definite elements of classic Stephen King in this book, but D. Melhoff makes the idea his own. What happens to these children makes you cringe in discomfort, but a small voice in the back of your mind wonders if you would do the same thing should the situation arise. Would it be worth it in the end? Would you be one of the lucky ones? Or would you be forced to make another impossible decision if the evil reared its ugly head?

I thought this story was well-told, with plenty of descriptions and action to make it feel like you were watching a movie while reading the words. I would love to see this book made into a movie some day. Even the book trailer seems more like a movie trailer than a book trailer. It is hard to believe that this book is the first one he has published. I look forward to more offerings from this author!

Julia worked for weeks planning the perfect surprise birthday party for her boyfriend, Liam, but that night, she was the one who got the biggest shock. He broke up with her in front of all their friends, humiliating her in the process.

Clearly revenge was in order.

The plan is simple. Make him jealous, win him back, and then crush his heart. Fair is fair. However, there is one little hiccup and he has curly brown hair and dimples.

Jesse is everything she wants. With him, she could almost forget her bruised heart. Almost. Julia has one choice: let Liam walk away after everything he did, or lose a chance at love in pursuit of payback.

**My thoughts**

This book is another example of why I love to read Tawdra Kandle's books. She has an ability to capture real life situations in fun fictional reads, with little twists here and there that may or may not have happened to someone in real life. Even if they haven't, you can easily see the situations playing out.

Who hasn't been burned in a relationship? Granted, most of us haven't been completely humiliated on such a grand scale, but many of us have been dumped when we didn't think the relationship was over. We have felt hurt and embarrassed and desperately wanted to extract some kind of revenge on some level. Most of us aren't willing to do it on such a grand stage as social media and a blog.

That being said, it is altogether possible that people are more likely to do it on such a grand stage, in this day and age of social media. However, Julia learns a lesson during her revenge campaign, from which others could easily learn before embarking on their own version.

In general, I found Julia to be a relatable character. I saw so much of myself in her, down to the weakness for a man with curly hair and dimples.

As with all good romantic comedies and chick lit, you pretty much know where this story is going. You are able to figure out many of the little twists in the plot well before the characters do. But what is most important is that the journey to those endings is an entertaining one. And, there is more to come. I can't wait for the next book!
