Born in the vast and looming mountains of North Carolina during the 1870’s, Landon Hampshire always remembered the folklore and legendary tales his father told him during his early childhood; about the people of the Kituhwa (Cherokee) and the birth of this tribal nation – an enchanting story he could never forget. Incorporating the aid of an eccentric old French trapper (old man Montague), Landon and his friends set out on an adventure, their initial intention is to discover treasure and become men. But what Landon will eventually come to discover is more than he ever bargained for.

Landon didn't realize his boyhood adventure would yield the incredible journey he ultimately experiences - going down the mysterious and mystical Randola River. At the base of the river is an island even more mysterious than the Randola itself.

The island releases many of its mysterious, yet even many more are created when Landon discovers, on the island, a diary of a young woman who lived forty years prior during the 1830’s (Trail of Tears). The diary entries are hopeful, though haunting. It reveals, in intimate detail, the life and dreams of this very special young girl who is turning into a woman of beauty and adventure, her love for a Cherokee boy, and the trials she will ultimately face. Her story unfolds through the reading of her diary, and Landon suddenly finds himself caught up in a sweeping, empowering world of re-invention and ultimate redemption.

The Diary’s House is C David Murphy’s first digitally published novel. He is also the author of two Shakespearean-style genre plays In the Years of the Ages and Hildengrass. “Lieutenant McQuaid, you have impressed me with your willingness to take on our most dangerous missions,” Peterson said, reverting to his natural Texas drawl. “You’ve never failed to accomplish whatever we asked you to do. Your willingness to take risks with your own survival in pursuit of our objectives has been truly remarkable.”

McQuaid nodded. “I believe in the cause, sir.”

“And what cause is that, Lieutenant?” Peterson asked. Sometimes he wasn’t sure himself what his original purpose was for founding Centurion in 1979.

“To promote a peaceful world for Capitalism and remove any obstacles to that, sir.”
Peterson pretended to examine the contents of McQuaid personnel folder.

“Centurion’s mission is to support global power in the hands of a very few extraordinarily competent individuals, Mr. McQuaid. Democracies are inefficient and dangerously prone to encouraging the anarchy of the masses at the expense of good governance. Mr. Kissinger is reviled for declaring, years ago, that the population of useless eaters must be thinned, but he was right. It was what Hitler so incompetently tried to do; yet it is Hitler’s vision, stripped of foolish anti-Semitism, we are dedicated to more patiently, more methodically, fulfill.”

“Yes, sir. One World Government,” McQuaid said dispassionately. “How’s that going, sir?”

The question took Peterson by surprise. He stammered a bit with his response. “Slow, slow, Mr. McQuaid.

Excerpt from "The Beat Goes On," a short story in 'Innocence End' by Angel Sharum

Angel Sharum and I have been friends on Facebook for several years now, thanks to our many writing adventures. I am very excited about her latest collection of short stories, Innocence End. Check out the book and read an excerpt from "The Beat Goes On."

I’d never heard the sawmill as quiet as it was that day. It seemed like every man in the place stopped what he was doing to look at me while I walked down the line to Daddy. By the time I reached him, Daddy’s face was so red I thought his head was going to pop off.

“You just had to do it didn’t you?” Daddy hissed as he grabbed my arm and dragged me out a side door. “Come prancing in here, half naked, your hair pulled back, proud as a peacock. Like I don’t take enough grief at this place.”

I could have argued that it wasn’t my dress, which was a respectable sundress that Mrs. Jenkins had made me, or the fact that my hair was pulled back, but the shiner on my eye and the fact that my lip was twice its normal size that caught everybody’s attention. Well, I could have argued if I could have talked, which I couldn’t because of my lip. It sounded like I was speaking a foreign language when I tried.

Biography

Angel Sharum is a Georgia Peach who sometimes writes stories that are rotten to the core. Never one to shy away from voicing her opinion, Angel found the perfect venue to share her thoughts when she started writing non-fiction articles for online publications.

The success of her articles convinced her to try her hand at other forms of writing. Putting what friends and family called a vivid and sometimes twisted imagination to use, she began writing poetry and short fiction. It didn't take long for her to realize this was where her true passion lay.

Writing short stories allows her to take readers on journeys of imagination that linger beyond "The End" and poetry offers a way for her to shake up people's emotions and make them think. According to Angel, when she accomplishes her goals a truly special connection exists between her and her readers.

'Fall' Guest Post by Author Kenya Carlton

Today's guest post comes from Kenya Carlton, author of Sweet as Sin and Jaded. It makes me think about my own childhood in the Midwest. What does fall mean to you?

Fall

Falls in the Midwest are beautiful. Colors bursting from the trees and weather that doesn’t choke you to death with its humidity is refreshing to say the least. When I was a kid, the fall only reminded me that school was starting again, which was never a good thing. It meant the demise of summer, getting up early in the morning, and worst of all homework. My feelings of fall equaling school lasted a very long time.

The only thing that could soothe me as a kid was the thought of Halloween. I went to Catholic school, and they would let us dress up for Halloween. Since my dad used to paint, he was creative as all hell, and I always had the greatest costumes. My favorite part was lots of candy, late night trick or treating for a bag full of loot. Once at home, instead of digging in, you had to study everything for hinky holes or loose wrappers and of course apples with razors. First off, no one wants a damn apple on Halloween, so that crap always had a permanent residence inside of a trash can right along with the raisins, for-realsies people, raisins!

Once high school came around, fall still meant school, uhhh! But the reasons for liking it changed. Football season brought the sounds of excited crowds, popcorn, and hotdogs. Homecoming festivities whether you joined in or not were sweetly infectious.

Well past high school age, the older I get, the more my priorities concerning this season has changed. Badass boots make me weak, cute jackets, and pretty fall hats now thrill me. The beautiful colors haven’t changed, but the sad state of Halloween has. Rules and curfews leave absolutely no chance for Mike Meyers to jump of the bushes in your neighborhood.

Kids think store bought costumes and face paint are creative which makes me wish they all had a Papa Robert in their lives. But mostly the fun free feeling that Halloween used to be for kids. Not for bar jumpers looking to satiate their need to be slutty for a night without judgment. I know some people don’t like to celebrate the holiday, insisting that it is devil worshipping, but Halloween stems from a day in the year where evil walked the earth. People who didn’t want to be recognized would wear mask to fool the evil, forcing them away. Whichever way you look at this holiday, one thing is for sure—kids just see the costumes and candy but adults see the season of fall.

Kenya has a B.A. in Mass communication, Television and Radio. She has fifteen years in production of television and film and five in television engineering. In 2009 Kenya Produced Dawn a short film and Executive Produced Destination Everywhere the pilot for a travel series through her production company Black R.O.K Productions established in 2008.

Synopsis

“…And I believe you do not have the control over your fire yet to destroy us all.”  He was calling my bluff. Worse, he was right.

Phoenix Rising is a first person story revolving around sixteen year old Maggie Henning. Maggie lives with her mother and has spent the previous ten years of her life wearing a label- daughter of the murderer John Henning. Her father resides at Sunnybrook Psychiatric Hospital, having been convicted of killing eight people inside of a local church, burning them alive. Or so Maggie has always been told. Maggie's world begins to change after finding a letter addressed to her from the psychiatric hospital that offers an ominous warning. She ignores the letter, waving it off as some random nut sending her mail.

Having to endure visits with her father, per her mother's request, has left Maggie feeling isolated and alone, with exception to her one friend, Stephanie; daughter of her father's deceased law partner. In an effort to cheer Maggie up, Stephanie and she take in a little “retail therapy” at the local mall.

Maggie finds herself drawn into a music store she doesn't normally go in to, drawn by a melody played by a mysterious raven haired guy that apparently alarms Maggie's friend.

Following an argument, Maggie is abandoned at the shopping center to walk home, only to spot the mystery man again, riding a motorcycle, who offers her a ride home. Maggie isn't normally that reckless, but she decides to throw caution to the wing and take him up on the offer.

The stage is set after a visit to her see her father, normally in a fairly catatonic state, comes aware, giving Maggie the same warning as the letter she received. Creatures, called “revenants” want Maggie's blood. Just when Maggie had felt optimistic about her father, the hopes were dashed. But, she had seen strange things; bones, pointed teeth, rotting flesh…

The drive home reveals that Maggie's mother is NOT what she seemed to be and after she's attacked, the mystery guy, named Michel, arrives and rescues Maggie from one of these creatures.

Maggie is taken to “The Trust”, a manor house that offers protection to beings from “The Realm”- another world that lives right below the surface of the Mortal one. Maggie begins to learn of this strange world and the creatures that inhabit it, including a young witch with much to live up to named Autumn, a light hearted fairy named Seatha, and two Vampire Princes of The Realm, one of which is Michel. Michel is kind and level headed. Luc, his brother, is a smart ass and calls things as he sees them. The two brothers tend to be opposites of each other in most things, with exceptions to their kingdom and now, Maggie.

Maggie meets Liam at The Trust, learning that the crazy board game eating man from the asylum is really her grandfather. Liam explains The Realm, offering guidance, and more importantly, informs Maggie of what she really is- the last of a race of beings called “Phoenixes”, creatures who have the ability to call fire and use it as they wish.

The revenants, led by a creature named Ossa, will stop at nothing to get Maggie; needing her blood to bring them to full power.

Maggie must not only come to believe in all that she has heard, including that she's one of these mythical creatures from stories, but also learn how to wield her power to face the creatures that would destroy both worlds Maggie has come to know of. All of this, even as she begins to feel more than mere friendship with one of the Princes…

**My thoughts**

Witches and fairies and vampires, oh my! This book includes all of them! You name the paranormal creature and it exists in The Realm. Well, except for werewolves, as they are extinct in this story. But hold on! There is something new! At least I haven't yet encountered a phoenix in a recent paranormal offering. The last one I can remember is in Harry Potter. 

This story is a familiar one in current literature today. A young girl comes of age, only to find out that she has a big secret. She possesses special powers and is the Chosen One to save some kind of a world. Maggie is a fun character, though. She is headstrong enough to know what she wants as she figures out how her life is going to change. She builds up her self-confidence as she comes into her own, finally realizing her potential. And of course, there is the hottie vampire who is tauntingly delicious.

You will laugh and cry, cheer and berate multiple characters as you read this initial story in the series. And like all good series openers, this one leaves you hanging and wanting more from the sequel. It's a fun debut that will keep the pages turning.

Author Bio:

Lisa C. Morgan lives in rural Upstate NY with her husband, three children, a degu, a precocious Siberian Husky, and a half Pom/Half Chi spoiled baby named Salacious B. Dustbunny.

    A lover of books and words, it has always been her desire to tell stories that the people near her could listen and read, escaping the world around them by way of the page. 

     Always having a new story idea popping into her head, (sometimes at the least appropriate of times,) Lisa can always be found with a notebook and writing utensil somewhere within reach, just as her 8th grade teacher made her promise to do.Lisa has two short stories previously published in anthologies. A Romantic short titled Nothing's Terminal (A Home for the Holidays; December, 2011) and  a zombie themed short titled Antidote (The Thorn of Death; March 2012). Her debut novel- Phoenix Rising is the first in a new YA series Maggie Henning & The Realm and will be released July 2012. Upcoming will be the continuation in the series- Phoenix Burning, Phoenix Shadow, and Phoenix Ashes.  

    When she isn't writing or taxiing kids, Lisa enjoys reading, football, softball, cooking, singing & dancing, tattoos, and spending time with family and friends.

Cole opened the door and Robyn pushed him inside. She grabbed hold of his hands and put them on her hips. She kissed him, pushing him down onto the floor of the hallway. She wanted to get as close to him as she could. She pulled his t-shirt over his head and looked appreciatively at the firm, muscular chest underneath. She ran her fingers down, across his sternum to the waistband of his jeans.

Cole stopped her, taking hold of her hand and squeezing it in his.

She looked into his eyes, those deep, dark eyes. She kissed his lips again, closing her eyes and savoring every second of how it felt to lose herself in someone, without any questions or recriminations. Without anyone having to get up and go home.

Cole brought her fingers to his mouth and softly kissed each knuckle in turn. His gentleness was too much to bear, and she drew herself away, let him go and got to her feet, sweeping her hair back out of her face.

My thoughts

I like Robyn. She lives up to the title of the novel as she swoops in and quickly takes charge of her father's life. I also like the blend of American and English traits in her, as she has lived in England for 9 years. I like that the book takes place in Michigan, as I grew up just south of the line in Ohio. This feels like home in some ways.

I also relate to feeling out of sorts when you return home after 9 years because your father is lying in a hospital, extremely ill. You have all kinds of memories about how wonderful your childhood was and you are desperate to get that back. Robyn is going overboard by taking over management of the roadhouse and the hockey team, but I get it. It fits her personality.

Her relationship with Cole feels too fast, yet feels right. I don't think Robyn would expect anything less out of her other half, especially considering certain incidents in her past. Cole's history requires a forceful push into moving on to someone new.
