**My thoughts**
I really liked this book. I didn't realize at first that it was the fourth book in a series, though I felt like a couple of the characters seemed a bit familiar. I then realized that I had read one of the other books in the series. But it completely works as a standalone story, because it is so focused on Dan and Brooke. I do want to go back and read the rest of the series, though, just to learn more about some of the other characters who hang out in the story.

Though it takes place in the city, the story reminds me of those small town romances that I do love so much, thanks to the closeness and intertwined lives of the friends and family in the community.

I fell in love with Brooke from her first vulnerable introduction. She had already lost everything once when her husband was killed in an accident. And now she has lost her home to the wildfires. All she has left are her memories and her animals. Her vulnerability helps her to be a magnet for other people, and animals, and just jumps off of the pages to also attract the reader to her. And despite all of the tragedy in her life, she is still a warm and kind person who wants to do whatever she can to help everyone and is able to mediate difficult situations with an amazing objectivity and fairness to attempt to appease both sides.

Dan is also quite likable because of his need to help people. He is also quite vulnerable because of protecting his heart and his son after his wife abandoned them some years ago. He has been working hard at rebuilding his own life and now relies almost too much on structure for control. And of course his 10-year-old son is completely charismatic and totally a kid I would love to hang out with.

As it should be in any great romance, the two are drawn to each other via a slow burning ember that has the potential to be fanned into a steady flame. It also has the potential to be easily snuffed out. And both of their pasts threaten to do just that.

The return of Dan's ex Valerie and his brother Jason are the most tangible threats. Valerie is very misguided and spoiled. I am not a fan of hers at all, but would probably tolerate her in social situations as I kept her at arm's length. She does seem to have the potential to become a better person at some point down the road. I like Jason, in spite of what he did to his brother. I did take pity on him when we got a peek at his backstory. I am expecting some good out of him, possibly in future installments of the story.

This is an easygoing romance that truly warms your heart and is easy to read. I did it in one sitting. It's totally worth checking out. 4.5 stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for the purposes of reviewing. I was not obligated to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
