Review of Willow's Way (A Sweet Life Novel) by Sharon Struth

Welcome to the review tour for Willow's Way by Sharon Struth. I previously read and reviewed her book The Sweet Life, so when I saw this new one was an option, I simply had to jump on it. (Read my review of that book here.) Please keep on reading to check out an excerpt, as well as my honest review of this women's fiction novel. Be sure to leave Sharon a comment or a question. And of course follow the rest of the review tour for even more chances to enter the giveaway at the end!

Please note that affiliate links are present within this post. Should you make a purchase through one, I may earn a small commission to help me to support my websites, at no additional cost to you. Please also note that I did receive a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This did not influence my thoughts in any way.

Willow's Way

Willow Armstrong, the once-famous “Queen of Weight Loss” and president of Pound Busters, succumbed to stress eating after her divorce. Now the scandal of getting caught on camera binging on pizza, and the internet-wide mocking of her new curves, may destroy her career. Add in a business advisor who drained her finances, and Willow is out of options—until she learns she’s inherited a house in England’s most picturesque locale, The Cotswolds.

Willow’s trip across the pond to sell the property and salvage her company soon becomes its own adventure: the house, once owned by grandparents she never met, needs major work. Plus, single dad Owen Hughes, the estate’s resident groundskeeper and owner of a local tour outfit, isn’t thrilled about the idea of leaving . . . Yet as Willow proceeds with her plans, she’s sidetracked by surprising discoveries about her family’s history--and with Owen’s help, the area’s distinctive attractions. Soon, she’s even retracing her roots—and testing her endurance—amid the region’s natural beauty. And the more she delves into the past, the more clearly she sees herself, her future, and the way home . . .

Read an excerpt:
Willow swallowed the lump in her throat, took the luggage handle, and hoisted it up the steps. A low howl of a dog, followed by rustling from the nearby woods, made her pause.

She turned to the sound, laughing as a short legged, shaggy dog approached, its long tail raised high in the air, wagging like a flag of surrender. The cute canine bellowed another generous howl and came toward Willow; she swore it wore a smile—if a dog could.

Willow stepped off the porch. “Hello there, little fella.” She crouched down and extended her hand. “Come here.”

Woooowooowoooo. This time he offered a softer, less frantic cooing that warmed and welcomed. He swarmed her calves while she ran a hand along his thick, wiry fur, trying to figure out the breed. A body like a basset hound, with the same white, black, and tan coloring, yet his thick, wiry hair was very un-bassett-like.

She touched his long, silky ears. “You’re a cute little guy.”

With that he rested his short, thick legs on her knees, giving her the once over, too.

Long snout. Pronounced black nose. Smiling dark brown eyes peeked out beneath a mop of hair atop his crown-shaped head. A real cutie. He licked her cheek.

“Are you lost or just part of the welcome wagon?” He licked her again. “Then part of the welcome wagon it is.”

She checked his collar for ID. A metal tag read Henry and listed a phone number.

“Well, Henry, why don’t I call your—”

“Henry!” A child yelled. “Henry!”

The voice came from the direction of the same thick trees where the dog had exited.

“He’s over here,” Willow hollered back and a moment later a young girl of maybe five or six dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt emerged.

She marched over. “Oh, Henry.” She shook her head and her fawn-colored pigtails danced. “You are not always a good listener.”

The dog abandoned Willow. As he rushed to meet the girl, his back end swayed to one side, as if it couldn’t keep up with his front half. He ran right into the young girl, but she braced herself from falling and leaned over to give him an affectionate pat on the back.

“Henry! You can be such a bad boy.”

Henry licked her cheek, making the girl giggle. Willow couldn’t wipe the smile from her face if she tried. Besides the young girl’s contagious laugh, her accented voice and reprimand sounded so grown compared to American children.

Willow walked toward them. “What kind of dog is he?”

“Oh, he’s a petite.”

“I’ve never heard of those.” Willow squatted down and ran her hand along his low, long body. “Just a petite?”

“No. A Petite Basset Griffon Vendéen.” She pronounced the words with a beginner’s French accent.

“That’s a mouthful. Well, I’ve definitely never heard of that either.”

“That’s why we call him a petite, or sometimes a PBGV.” She cupped the dog’s snout in her hands and kissed the top of his head. “My mum used to breed them.” She frowned. “Now we only have Henry.”

“Oh, so she doesn’t breed them anymore?”

She quieted and stroked the dog’s long ears. “My mum passed away. But my daddy let me keep Henry.”

Sadness tore at Willow’s chest. To hear that such a young child had suffered the loss of a parent didn’t seem right. “I’m sorry about your mother. I lost mine, too. It’s hard.”

The little girl played with the dog for a bit then glanced up at Willow. “You’re American?”

**My thoughts**
I was excited to come across this book, because I really liked Sharon Struth's previous Sweet Life book, which is the inaugural book in the series. (And I do hope that more of these are in the works!) There is a quick nod to the first book, but the two are completely separate from each other.

I think I liked this one even more than the first one. Then again, I feel like I related to Willow a lot more. We're the same age and suffer from some of the same physical and psychological ailments. So it was extremely easy for me to put myself in her place in the story.

Willow's Way is another one of these stories where the MC has to travel and ends up finding herself along the way. I just love these and completely understand how that happens. I think that is why I like to travel. In this book, Willow has to go over to England to take care of some family business that she uncovered after her mother died. She ends up learning about even more family secrets, and therefore more about herself. She also learns how to love herself, which can be difficult to do, especially considering her past.

Conveniently there is a beautiful divorced man who is the caretaker for her family's estate. He is ever so charming and gets compared to Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. I kept having thoughts of Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones, especially with his insistence that Willow is perfect just the way she is. They fit together so well. We could all use an Owen in our lives.

Adding to Owen's charm is Jilly, his young daughter. She just lights up every page on which she appears. I fell madly in love with her, and of course, Henry her faithful canine companion.

Just as in the previous book, the landscapes and settings are so vividly described that I felt as if I was right there with the characters. I could so easily hop on a plane and go to the other side of the pond, if I had the money to do so. Maybe I could look up some of my long-lost relatives and discover more about myself. And I seriously want to do the Cotswold Walks to explore that part of the country.

I loved every minute of this book. And while it went quickly, I didn't zip through it super fast, because I wanted to savor every moment of it. I was a little sad when it was over. But I can't wait for another book to come along.

Meet Tasher, the author and entrepreneur behind Divorced and Scared No More

Over the past several days, you have probably seen many excerpts and references to the Divorced and Scared No More series by Tasher, both on here and over at Uplifting Reads. She wrote the books to reach out to people who are going through a divorce and struggling to find their way again. Drawing on her own experience with her divorce after 26 years of years of marriage, she wants to let people know that they are not alone. Now, find out more about the woman behind the books.

Welcome back, Tasher! Please tell us a bit more about yourself.
I was born in Flint, Michigan to Mary and Houston Asher. I have one older brother named C. Robert Asher. We lived on a farm in Linden, Michigan until she was in middle school. At which time my family moved to the suburbs of Flint so my parents could be closer to the factories they worked in. Mom worked for Chevrolet at the Metal Fab plant and Dad worked in Buick City on the North end.
Readers may not be aware that you have dyslexia, which can present its own challenges. What have you found your challenges to be?
I suffered from undiagnosed dyslexia until my high school teacher, Ms. Burdick recognized the symptoms and sent me for diagnoses. Ms. Burdick had a big impact forming my view of the reading disorder. She taught me how to use various strategies and techniques along with technical aids to help with the management of dyslexia. Within a short time, she taught me how it really was a gift that I just needed to learn to control. After learning to control my gift my grades quickly improved and I graduated Ainsworth high school with a scholarship. I attended Northwood University in Midland, Michigan graduated in four years with three degrees. Upon graduation I was hired by General Motors Corporation in their Memphis Zone. So I really don’t look at dyslexia as a challenge it is rather my gift.
What inspired you to start writing?
I have dyslexia and writing is something everyone told me I couldn’t do especially my ex. So after my divorced and with the encouragement of friends, family and my divorce attorney, I decided it was time to try.
So, you started with the Divorced and Scared No More series and also created a website. How did these come about?
I married my ex-husband on January 14, 1984 in Columbus, Mississippi. We had 3 children together. He was a pilot in the USAF and relocated from Columbus Mississippi to San Antonio Texas. At which time I decided to quit my job as a district manager for General Motors Parts Division and became a stay at home mother. Until, we divorced on our twenty sixth wedding anniversary January 14, 2010. After moving to Houston, I launched the website and became a frequent contributor to various online magazines. Along with co-author Tony Haynes published a 3 book series called ‘Divorced and Scared No More’. The main objective of this book was to help in dealing with a divorce. Therapist and clinical author Justin Nutt, LSCSW, LAC, was consulted as a technical advisor for the series.
What inspired the title?
The name of the series as a continuation of the website. The name for the website is to help people understand there is no reason to be scared post-divorce. Now is the time to make your life yours and do what you want. Create a life where you are in control and if you need help look to your higher power to forge the new life you will enjoy.
Into what genre does this book fit?
The series is for self-help in dealing with life after divorce.
How did you come up with the logo?
The logo for the website and books is a broken set of pilot wings. My ex-husband was a pilot and when they get their first set of wings in the USAF they break them in half and give one half to someone they love and the other half is thrown away. The point is those wings will never come together again. Just like our marriage after the divorce.
What can we find you doing when you are not writing?
My daughter and two grandchildren live in the Houston area by me and my spare time is enjoying watching the wee ones’ activities. My family is my world and I enjoy as much time with them as I can have.
What advice do you have for other writers?
No matter what your challenge is while writing stick with your passion. Do not listen to others that say you can’t…….if they say that to you think to yourself wanna bet! You can do anything you want to do but be prepared that you may have to work a little harder or find tools that can help you.
Thank you so much for your time!

Taking a Look at Oneself Following Divorce Is Scary ~ an excerpt from Divorced & Scared No More!

Divorced & Scared No More! Emotional Support for the Newly Divorced

Have you experienced Divorce? Are you questioning what your future will be after your vows of "I do" turn into "I do not" along with the loss of all the dreams that never will be fulfilled? Divorced and Scared No More: Emotional Support for the Newly Divorced is the first installment of the three-part trilogy written to assist readers in post-divorce related matters while providing you the motivation you need to move on.

Author Tasher speaks from personal experience; having gone through the many stages of relationships. This includes denial of a failed marriage, expressiveness needed to gain healing and how to remain emotionally grounded. You'll find ways to embrace your new found freedom and turn the lemons life threw at you into a Zesty Lemon Sorbet!

Therapist and clinical author Justin Nutt, LSCSW, LAC consulted as a technical advisor for the series. Insuring everything presented be accurate and quality material while still being a comforting, easy-to-read guide to surviving divorce.

Co-Author Tony Haynes is a practitioner of Acrostic Poetry -poetry where the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a particular word or phrase. At the end of each chapter, you can look forward to reading a clever poem from words found within the word DIVORCE. These are poetic thoughts that ask "How did I get here?" This rite of passage has everything to do with life and our stories affects each other because we are all connected. Now it's time to peek inside and see how, where & why our lives intersect.

There are so many insightful topics in the book, which will help you feel inspired to look inward and become aware of your needs to help you live again. There is still life after emotional death ... Isn't it time for you to be happily divorced and Divorced and Scared NO More?

Read the excerpt:
Understandably, self-reflection is scary. For most people, the root of this problem is usually a lack of self-awareness: we know ourselves too poorly. However, self-reflection is a must for those of us who have been through a divorce. We must learn from our mistakes and heal the wounds. The person we are today is the result of past events and decisions we have made.
In order to move forward from a breakup, you must accept exactly what happened and acknowledge the part you played in it. It is very important to understand how the choices you made impacted the relationship. Recognizing your errors is the key to not repeating them. It is time to learn crucial lessons from your past relationship.
Be honest with yourself throughout this part of the recovering process, but try not to harp on who is to blame or beat yourself up over your mistakes. As you look back on the relationship, you have an opportunity to learn more about yourself, how you relate to others, and the troubles you need to work with.
If you have the ability to fairly analyze your own behavior, including the reasons why you picked your former partner, you will have the ability to see where you made poor choices, so you can learn and make better choices next time.
It’s a good idea to decide to let go of the concepts of fear and failure. Life is made up of highs and lows, successful or not so successful events, and some that just leave you numb. Be prepared to accept these things as valuable lessons you pick up along your journey. These events might be easy experiences that you find yourself more than prepared to handle, just a turn or bump in the road. In some cases you may need to make a U-turn, but correcting the course of your life is never a failure. It is a new beginning that means you are trying and not quitting. As long as you don’t quit, you are on the road to success.
Remember to love yourself and work at becoming settled with the person you are. It would help if, while you are looking in the mirror every morning when you wake up and every evening as you go to bed, you also tell yourself how much you like and love yourself and how good a person you are. You will never be able to survive your divorce and its aftermath, much less be ready to connect with another person, until you are comfortable with yourself, alone.
Loving yourself is very important. So important it was once a law that every United States citizen had to love themselves. Not really, I just wanted to see if you would fall for it. But loving yourself is still very important. You are here to gain from struggle your higher standards for the living. Therefore, loving yourself should become one of your Personal Laws to elevate the quality of your life. What you whisper to yourself has the most power in your life.
So now you may be asking, what helped me process my divorce so well?

When I was young, I remember most nights at my grandparents’ house going something like this: After dinner my father would start tapping his finger, and then my Uncle Rob would pick up some spoons and begin tapping along. Very quickly my Aunt Wanda would go get her guitar, and everyone would find something to play. The rest of the night would be spent singing, dancing, and laughing. My father’s dry humor interacting with my Uncle Reg’s slapstick was a guarantee for a sore belly (the good kind of sore) in the morning.
Because my family always relied on humor and music to express our feelings, during my divorce and recovery I listened to empowering songs of hope. All I can say is that I am proud of the climb I made. Miley Cyrus recorded the song “The Climb” at just the right time for me. I sure do love GodWinks and how they randomly come in your life.
The night before I moved out of our family home, my daughter, Baby Cakes, put on some music to start my playlist. In the empty dining room, my oldest son, Bucky, and youngest, Boo Boo, grabbed me and danced with me, telling me they knew “I Will Survive” (my adult children had more faith in me than I did). But I did realize I could survive, if not for me, then for them. And I was much stronger in their eyes than I felt at the time.
Take the time to breathe in, breathe out, and decide what you want your future to hold. One moment, one breath, one second, and one step at a time, it will get better. You really cannot imagine what it will be like when you get to the other side.
It’s your life and it is now your choice to live the way you want to. Divorce did not destroy you or any of us who are divorced unless we let it. Bon Jovi may not have been referring to divorce in his song “It’s My Life,” but this is what we have to do: live while we are alive and realize it is our choice where we go from here because now we can go where we want.
Do not be scared or afraid: face your fears, dance in the rain, sing, laugh, smile, and throw those curtains open, saying out loud, “Good Morning, World.” If you want to eat seven tacos, there is nothing stopping you. If you want to go skydiving—well, there are actually some restrictions and classes, but do what’s required and go for it. If I can go through all this and come out better and happier, so can you. The choices you make are the beginning of the change.

Read the excerpt:
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Oh my goodness, how did this happen? How did I get here?” Going through a divorce is never easy, and whether or not it was your idea, you need time to heal. It is very painful and hard enough if you were the one leaving, or even if you both agreed divorce was the best option. However, it can be more difficult if you didn’t see it coming. It can create a maelstrom of emotion. You might feel literally speechless or even hysterical because it is a heartbreaking and painful experience, leaving a family torn apart, confused, and angry. Children are hurt through the process, even if, in the end, it’s best for them, too.
In the initial shock of a divorce, especially when you are caught off guard, your mind most often shields itself with denial to help you survive emotionally. Denial can temporarily help you soak up the initial trauma and the harsh feelings of betrayal, desperation, and rejection. You might be telling yourself, whether consciously or unconsciously, that it isn’t really happening. You may even try to convince yourself that your spouse was just bluffing, and you may avoid telling anyone your mate has left because you are still in utter disbelief.
I know that feeling. You just want to get through the horrific pain that left you feeling as if you had everything inside of you ripped out. The pain is even more intense when you begin to try coping with your own suffering while still maintaining a sense of normalcy for your children.
The laundry is waiting to be done, bills need to be paid, your house needs to be cleaned, there’s work at the office, and your children need you. Getting through the day with all these responsibilities when you’re emotionally torn seems like an impossible feat. And then more bills need to be paid. (For more on the practical realities of life after divorce, see the second book in this series: Divorced and Scared No More! Practical Advice for the Newly Divorced.)
Hurt and denial don’t do the laundry. They don’t pay the bills. They don’t clean your house. You still need to work, more than ever now, yet you need to be your very best at parenting at the same time. It’s a difficult balance, to say the least.
Unfortunately, the world doesn’t stop turning just so you can grieve the end of your relationship. No matter how strong a person you are, a major change in life such as a divorce is bound to leave you staggering before you find your feet again. You need to believe in yourself and know this is definitely not the end of the road, that there is a long journey ahead, and that joy is still possible for you.
Though it won’t happen overnight and probably won’t be as easy to do as it sounds, you will eventually shake the baggage from your past off your shoulders and move ahead full throttle. Everything is yours to handle alone now, but don’t shortchange yourself. You’ve probably been doing it all on your own anyway; now you’ve got to do it without a chunk of the income. So try—again easier said than done—but try to deal with issues head on. Keeping a roof over the kids’ heads and food in their tummies will always come first. Although it seems like money and career can’t wait, you can steal a little time from them. Prioritize! You will never need your skills in prioritizing as much as you need them now.
Recognize also there will be times when you feel alone even in a room full of people. Realize the lonely feelings will not last forever, unless you let them. Take a moment and really think about it: you probably were alone before your ex-spouse physically left, and now you’re dealing with the reality of life without their presence. In some ways, it might be a relief—no more walking on eggshells. You can say whatever you want, whenever you want! You get the bed all to yourself and all the blankets to boot! It’s okay to be you and do the things you like. This is a major life change; time is your friend now. If you work on processing your feelings, time will help heal your wounds. Give yourself permission to accept this transitional period while you work on all the pieces of yourself.

"U" Come Before Your "X" ~ an excerpt from Divorced & Scared No More! by Tasher & Tony Haynes

Read the excerpt:
The first and the foremost thing you need to learn is you now need to put yourself first. Now that you are single again, it is time for you to align what your mind knows and how you respond to it. You need to pull yourself out of the denial mode and tell yourself you are better off now without a marriage that was doing no good to you as a person. It is most likely there were many flaws in your broken relationship. After all, the marriage did end for a very good reason.
It is time to kick your ex off the pedestal; the ex does not deserve to be there. You do! Think about your marriage for a few minutes and answer a few questions for me. Tell me again; how wonderful was your ex? Was your ex a thoughtful, precious person who put you and your relationship above everything else? Was your ex willing to swim through shark-infested waters to give you a glass of lemonade? This is an exaggeration, and no one should ever ask other people to put themselves in danger, but the point is, was your ex willing to do things they may not have liked in an effort to make you happy?
Let’s face it: your ex-husband wasn’t Hercules. Your ex-wife wasn’t Venus. Sugar‑coating your life may make it taste sweeter for a while, but in the end, you’ll just have a spare tire and a heart condition more serious than a broken heart. Broken hearts heal. Take your ex-partner off the pedestal and climb up there yourself. Take my word for it—the view is nice from up here. Divorce can be like getting a new car; it hurts to give up the old one you thought was reliable, but now you have one you can absolutely rely on because you chose it yourself—and it comes with accessories. I have cupholders, music, and laughter in mine. They come standard on my new me. You deserve a pedestal with cup holders and a lot more.
Often people are simply afraid of being alone and settle for a partner who is not fulfilling. Rather than accepting the reality that they may have settled in their relationship, people often choose to remember the good about the ex-partner and not the type of person their ex really was and now is. Any partner is better than no partner, right? (Hint: wrong. It might work for your spouse, but you’re not settling; you’re taking the upgraded version!)
It is also very common for the party who was left to remember the good qualities but never the bad. Is your memory building your ex up into someone they really were not? Don’t look at the times when “X” was so wonderful to you, and how much “X” loved you, because the fact that your ex left proves that they were not the right person for you. You are better off without coldness in your life. If your ex was everything your memory is building them up to be, you would still be together.
You might also wonder why your ex was not smart enough to hold onto you. If you are wearing rose‑colored glasses, now is the time to take them off. They may seem nice at first, but you look better in real sunglasses anyway. You are fantastic! You are your own priority, and you deserve the best. Obviously, your ex didn’t see you that way, but that view of you doesn’t mean you are flawed; it means your spouse wasn’t seeing you or accepting you for who you are. If your ex‑spouse was unable to handle your amazing qualities, it’s his or her loss. You don’t have to feel sorry for your ex. They either got what they felt they deserved, or what they truly deserved. Chances are, if they didn’t put in the hard work with you, they will fail at it again. Not your problem.
Your problem is to make sure you know it was wrong to settle for your ex forgetting your birthday, leaving dishes in the sink, or leaving stinky clothes all over the house. Remember the month you went to help Aunt Martha and you came home to the deadest yard on the block because “X” forgot to water the flowers? Your garden is now abundant and fragrant. Why shouldn’t it be? If that’s what you work to achieve and value, you deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
If “U” have to, push “X” off of the pedestal and climb up there yourself—you’ll have a better view of what’s really happening in your life—and pushing your X off can be cathartic. Learn from the mistakes in your past relationship. Keep in mind that even in the alphabet, “U” comes before “X.” If it’s that way in the alphabet, you can follow suit and make it that way in your life, too!
