Read the excerpt:
Understandably, self-reflection is scary. For most people, the root of this problem is usually a lack of self-awareness: we know ourselves too poorly. However, self-reflection is a must for those of us who have been through a divorce. We must learn from our mistakes and heal the wounds. The person we are today is the result of past events and decisions we have made.
In order to move forward from a breakup, you must accept exactly what happened and acknowledge the part you played in it. It is very important to understand how the choices you made impacted the relationship. Recognizing your errors is the key to not repeating them. It is time to learn crucial lessons from your past relationship.
Be honest with yourself throughout this part of the recovering process, but try not to harp on who is to blame or beat yourself up over your mistakes. As you look back on the relationship, you have an opportunity to learn more about yourself, how you relate to others, and the troubles you need to work with.
If you have the ability to fairly analyze your own behavior, including the reasons why you picked your former partner, you will have the ability to see where you made poor choices, so you can learn and make better choices next time.
It’s a good idea to decide to let go of the concepts of fear and failure. Life is made up of highs and lows, successful or not so successful events, and some that just leave you numb. Be prepared to accept these things as valuable lessons you pick up along your journey. These events might be easy experiences that you find yourself more than prepared to handle, just a turn or bump in the road. In some cases you may need to make a U-turn, but correcting the course of your life is never a failure. It is a new beginning that means you are trying and not quitting. As long as you don’t quit, you are on the road to success.
Remember to love yourself and work at becoming settled with the person you are. It would help if, while you are looking in the mirror every morning when you wake up and every evening as you go to bed, you also tell yourself how much you like and love yourself and how good a person you are. You will never be able to survive your divorce and its aftermath, much less be ready to connect with another person, until you are comfortable with yourself, alone.
Loving yourself is very important. So important it was once a law that every United States citizen had to love themselves. Not really, I just wanted to see if you would fall for it. But loving yourself is still very important. You are here to gain from struggle your higher standards for the living. Therefore, loving yourself should become one of your Personal Laws to elevate the quality of your life. What you whisper to yourself has the most power in your life.
So now you may be asking, what helped me process my divorce so well?

When I was young, I remember most nights at my grandparents’ house going something like this: After dinner my father would start tapping his finger, and then my Uncle Rob would pick up some spoons and begin tapping along. Very quickly my Aunt Wanda would go get her guitar, and everyone would find something to play. The rest of the night would be spent singing, dancing, and laughing. My father’s dry humor interacting with my Uncle Reg’s slapstick was a guarantee for a sore belly (the good kind of sore) in the morning.
Because my family always relied on humor and music to express our feelings, during my divorce and recovery I listened to empowering songs of hope. All I can say is that I am proud of the climb I made. Miley Cyrus recorded the song “The Climb” at just the right time for me. I sure do love GodWinks and how they randomly come in your life.
The night before I moved out of our family home, my daughter, Baby Cakes, put on some music to start my playlist. In the empty dining room, my oldest son, Bucky, and youngest, Boo Boo, grabbed me and danced with me, telling me they knew “I Will Survive” (my adult children had more faith in me than I did). But I did realize I could survive, if not for me, then for them. And I was much stronger in their eyes than I felt at the time.
Take the time to breathe in, breathe out, and decide what you want your future to hold. One moment, one breath, one second, and one step at a time, it will get better. You really cannot imagine what it will be like when you get to the other side.
It’s your life and it is now your choice to live the way you want to. Divorce did not destroy you or any of us who are divorced unless we let it. Bon Jovi may not have been referring to divorce in his song “It’s My Life,” but this is what we have to do: live while we are alive and realize it is our choice where we go from here because now we can go where we want.
Do not be scared or afraid: face your fears, dance in the rain, sing, laugh, smile, and throw those curtains open, saying out loud, “Good Morning, World.” If you want to eat seven tacos, there is nothing stopping you. If you want to go skydiving—well, there are actually some restrictions and classes, but do what’s required and go for it. If I can go through all this and come out better and happier, so can you. The choices you make are the beginning of the change.

Read the excerpt:
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Oh my goodness, how did this happen? How did I get here?” Going through a divorce is never easy, and whether or not it was your idea, you need time to heal. It is very painful and hard enough if you were the one leaving, or even if you both agreed divorce was the best option. However, it can be more difficult if you didn’t see it coming. It can create a maelstrom of emotion. You might feel literally speechless or even hysterical because it is a heartbreaking and painful experience, leaving a family torn apart, confused, and angry. Children are hurt through the process, even if, in the end, it’s best for them, too.
In the initial shock of a divorce, especially when you are caught off guard, your mind most often shields itself with denial to help you survive emotionally. Denial can temporarily help you soak up the initial trauma and the harsh feelings of betrayal, desperation, and rejection. You might be telling yourself, whether consciously or unconsciously, that it isn’t really happening. You may even try to convince yourself that your spouse was just bluffing, and you may avoid telling anyone your mate has left because you are still in utter disbelief.
I know that feeling. You just want to get through the horrific pain that left you feeling as if you had everything inside of you ripped out. The pain is even more intense when you begin to try coping with your own suffering while still maintaining a sense of normalcy for your children.
The laundry is waiting to be done, bills need to be paid, your house needs to be cleaned, there’s work at the office, and your children need you. Getting through the day with all these responsibilities when you’re emotionally torn seems like an impossible feat. And then more bills need to be paid. (For more on the practical realities of life after divorce, see the second book in this series: Divorced and Scared No More! Practical Advice for the Newly Divorced.)
Hurt and denial don’t do the laundry. They don’t pay the bills. They don’t clean your house. You still need to work, more than ever now, yet you need to be your very best at parenting at the same time. It’s a difficult balance, to say the least.
Unfortunately, the world doesn’t stop turning just so you can grieve the end of your relationship. No matter how strong a person you are, a major change in life such as a divorce is bound to leave you staggering before you find your feet again. You need to believe in yourself and know this is definitely not the end of the road, that there is a long journey ahead, and that joy is still possible for you.
Though it won’t happen overnight and probably won’t be as easy to do as it sounds, you will eventually shake the baggage from your past off your shoulders and move ahead full throttle. Everything is yours to handle alone now, but don’t shortchange yourself. You’ve probably been doing it all on your own anyway; now you’ve got to do it without a chunk of the income. So try—again easier said than done—but try to deal with issues head on. Keeping a roof over the kids’ heads and food in their tummies will always come first. Although it seems like money and career can’t wait, you can steal a little time from them. Prioritize! You will never need your skills in prioritizing as much as you need them now.
Recognize also there will be times when you feel alone even in a room full of people. Realize the lonely feelings will not last forever, unless you let them. Take a moment and really think about it: you probably were alone before your ex-spouse physically left, and now you’re dealing with the reality of life without their presence. In some ways, it might be a relief—no more walking on eggshells. You can say whatever you want, whenever you want! You get the bed all to yourself and all the blankets to boot! It’s okay to be you and do the things you like. This is a major life change; time is your friend now. If you work on processing your feelings, time will help heal your wounds. Give yourself permission to accept this transitional period while you work on all the pieces of yourself.

"U" Come Before Your "X" ~ an excerpt from Divorced & Scared No More! by Tasher & Tony Haynes

There are so many insightful topics in the book, which will help you feel inspired to look inward and become aware of your needs to help you live again. There is still life after emotional death ... Isn't it time for you to be happily divorced and Divorced and Scared NO More?

Read the excerpt:
The first and the foremost thing you need to learn is you now need to put yourself first. Now that you are single again, it is time for you to align what your mind knows and how you respond to it. You need to pull yourself out of the denial mode and tell yourself you are better off now without a marriage that was doing no good to you as a person. It is most likely there were many flaws in your broken relationship. After all, the marriage did end for a very good reason.
It is time to kick your ex off the pedestal; the ex does not deserve to be there. You do! Think about your marriage for a few minutes and answer a few questions for me. Tell me again; how wonderful was your ex? Was your ex a thoughtful, precious person who put you and your relationship above everything else? Was your ex willing to swim through shark-infested waters to give you a glass of lemonade? This is an exaggeration, and no one should ever ask other people to put themselves in danger, but the point is, was your ex willing to do things they may not have liked in an effort to make you happy?
Let’s face it: your ex-husband wasn’t Hercules. Your ex-wife wasn’t Venus. Sugar‑coating your life may make it taste sweeter for a while, but in the end, you’ll just have a spare tire and a heart condition more serious than a broken heart. Broken hearts heal. Take your ex-partner off the pedestal and climb up there yourself. Take my word for it—the view is nice from up here. Divorce can be like getting a new car; it hurts to give up the old one you thought was reliable, but now you have one you can absolutely rely on because you chose it yourself—and it comes with accessories. I have cupholders, music, and laughter in mine. They come standard on my new me. You deserve a pedestal with cup holders and a lot more.
Often people are simply afraid of being alone and settle for a partner who is not fulfilling. Rather than accepting the reality that they may have settled in their relationship, people often choose to remember the good about the ex-partner and not the type of person their ex really was and now is. Any partner is better than no partner, right? (Hint: wrong. It might work for your spouse, but you’re not settling; you’re taking the upgraded version!)
It is also very common for the party who was left to remember the good qualities but never the bad. Is your memory building your ex up into someone they really were not? Don’t look at the times when “X” was so wonderful to you, and how much “X” loved you, because the fact that your ex left proves that they were not the right person for you. You are better off without coldness in your life. If your ex was everything your memory is building them up to be, you would still be together.
You might also wonder why your ex was not smart enough to hold onto you. If you are wearing rose‑colored glasses, now is the time to take them off. They may seem nice at first, but you look better in real sunglasses anyway. You are fantastic! You are your own priority, and you deserve the best. Obviously, your ex didn’t see you that way, but that view of you doesn’t mean you are flawed; it means your spouse wasn’t seeing you or accepting you for who you are. If your ex‑spouse was unable to handle your amazing qualities, it’s his or her loss. You don’t have to feel sorry for your ex. They either got what they felt they deserved, or what they truly deserved. Chances are, if they didn’t put in the hard work with you, they will fail at it again. Not your problem.
Your problem is to make sure you know it was wrong to settle for your ex forgetting your birthday, leaving dishes in the sink, or leaving stinky clothes all over the house. Remember the month you went to help Aunt Martha and you came home to the deadest yard on the block because “X” forgot to water the flowers? Your garden is now abundant and fragrant. Why shouldn’t it be? If that’s what you work to achieve and value, you deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
If “U” have to, push “X” off of the pedestal and climb up there yourself—you’ll have a better view of what’s really happening in your life—and pushing your X off can be cathartic. Learn from the mistakes in your past relationship. Keep in mind that even in the alphabet, “U” comes before “X.” If it’s that way in the alphabet, you can follow suit and make it that way in your life, too!

#BookReview 'Diary of a Single Wedding Planner' by Violet Howe

diary of a single wedding planner tour banner

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00001]Wedding planner Tyler Warren left heartbreak behind when she ran away from her small Southern hometown and started a new life in a big city. Years later, she wants to believe in the fairy-tale endings her job promotes, but the clients she meets day after day seem to be more “Crazily Ever After” than “Happily Ever After.”

Meanwhile, her own attempts at romance play out as bizarre comedies rather than love stories, and she’s starting to think Prince Charming either fell off his horse or got eaten by a dragon. When unresolved issues from Tyler’s past complicate things even further, she discovers she may yet have some things to figure out before she can find her own happy ending.

This delightful first book in the Tales Behind the Veils series chronicles Tyler’s wacky misadventures, both personal and professional. Whether she’s getting insane requests from brides or outlandish requests on dates, you’re sure to be charmed and entertained by the Diary of a Single Wedding Planner.

**My thoughts**

Okay, how many of us have ever been Tyler? That unrequited first love that completely broke our hearts. That best friend who is probably perfect for us, but we just can't see the forest for the trees. Those feelings like you are never going to find your one true love. That inability to stand up for yourself all the time, because it is hard to say no and to see people hurting. That need to learn how to do your job well and how to "life" even better. I know it isn't just me. But I did see a lot of myself in Tyler. I am sure that many other women are going to agree. I just had to love her.

I also love Cabe. He is the perfect best friend, even if he was a fool and left her behind to get married. He reminds me a lot of people I have known, as does her ex-boyfriend Dwayne. I want to smack both of them, but I do also want to love on Cabe.

The dating game sucks. Tyler's experiences, especially her crazy dates, just further cement that. Sure, her experiences may be a bit on the extreme side, but I have heard tell of similar situations and may or may not have a few of my own. I am not going to elaborate, because I don't want readers to lose the funny factor when they read for themselves.

The other funny side is all of the weddings. I am sure that a lot of readers are going to think that these weddings are contrived and far-fetched. Growing up with people involved in a lot of weddings, I can promise you that any one of these wedding situations can and does happen.

I also found Tyler's mom funny, yet cringe-worthy all at once. I think even if your mother isn't like that all of the time, you will recognize a lot of the conversations.

The only thing that threw me off was her name. I am so used to associating "Tyler" with a guy that I would forget it was HER name. I would get confused for a moment and then remembered it was her.

So, yes, all in all, I found this book to be quite realistic. It kept me engrossed, as I kept putting off other adulting responsibilities to keep reading. I did actually LOL at some moments. I cringed and I cried. It is somewhat predictable, but I don't care. It doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, but there is such a hint of more to come, that I need to get my hands on the second book.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.

'Being Family: The get-along guide for in-laws' by Lori Phillips

Being Family: The get along guide for in-laws
by Lori Phillips

In-law relationships can be the most difficult, and they can destroy otherwise happy marriages, too. By seeing things from each other's perspective, you'll gain the understanding you need to let down your guard and open your hearts to new family members.

This simple little book is filled with truths that can transform your family relationships.

A must-read for soon-to-be-weds, newlyweds and even long-time marrieds. Makes a terrific gift.

Read an excerpt from Chapter 1:
In the beginning...

I always hated in-law jokes. And when I got married, I knew why. Getting along with your in-laws is no laughing matter. I always felt that family was your first and last line of defense against the cold, cruel world. You stick together. But, I learned that a wedding ring and a marriage license don’t create family ties. People do. Real love takes time to cultivate. What is perplexing to me is how many families never give in-laws a chance from the start.

For some people, in-law problems start at the beginning. “She’s always hated me!” “I never liked him.” For others, trouble creeps up and takes them by surprise. “Everything was fine until we/they got married/had the baby!” What triggers this combat? Human beings are like pack animals. It is natural instinct to protect their own pack, and it is a long process before a new creature is allowed in. We are suspicious of strangers. They’re fine at a distance, which is why no one seems to put up defenses during the dating phase. But marriage is a commitment that makes everyone wary. Is this person going to fit into our family? Is he or she good enough? How will this change us? Is this a family threat?

A human parent’s instinct is to love and protect its young for the rest of its life. And, if he or she relishes the role, it will not be easy to hand over this responsibility to someone else, especially a young, inexperienced person. A parent will not adjust easily to being second in its child’s life. A parent must come to terms with this, but it is not easy or pleasant. It hurts. For new, young wives and husbands, the change is equally hard. Just starting out, they’ve broken away from their own families to live independent lives. They busy themselves creating their new families, making decisions, choosing their lifestyles. This freedom is exciting! They now have their own little family or pack to protect and nurture. They do not appreciate outsiders telling them how to run their lives. This is all new to the young family. They don’t realize that someday their own little offspring will set off to start his own family and they’ll want to be a part of their grown child’s life, too. They’re too busy to think that far ahead. But they should.

…it’s all about territory

What people fail to understand is that when children marry, their pack increases. Yes, you gain a family member. You don’t lose one. Unless someone makes the choice to leave. The new couple may move off to sleep in their own hut, but emotionally, they still belong to your extended clan. We want our opinions, methods, traditions or advice to matter to our loved ones. We want our share of attention. Everyone wants to be loved.

But what sets humans above the rest of the animal kingdom is our ability to reason. Isn’t it reasonable to accept and adapt to the natural changes in family life? There comes a time when the grown child needs a spouse more than a mother or father. A parent simply can’t fulfill those needs. But a wise spouse will make room for parents in heart and home as well.

The honeymoon period

Well, you might not cart along your in-laws on your honeymoon like my brother-in-law did (yes, he is definitely “family”) but you’ll still go through a honeymoon period with them. During this time, everyone still treats you like the new special guest. Everything you do will be charming…or interesting, at least. And just like a honeymoon, everything will be wonderful. Sooner or later, the novelty of your newness will wear off. As time goes on, any differences in your lifestyle that were interesting in the past grow tiresome or odd. The new person is expected to fit in and adapt, not the other way around. If he doesn’t, it is perceived as a threat to the status quo. New ways challenge the traditions that people hold dear. Melding two new families together means adapting and changing, and people aren’t always comfortable with that.
It pays to make it work
Just as a marital relationship requires effort, good relationships with your in-laws take some effort, too. Why bother when you can simply ignore their phone calls? Because there are great rewards in a strong, loving family bond. And the penalties of a bad relationship with those who are genetically and/or legally tied to you can be hell on your heart and seriously diminish the quality of your life. The choice is yours.

So roll up your sleeves and check your ego at the door. This may not be easy, but it will be worth the effort.

Kevin started stroking my hair, and saying, "You have pretty, pretty, brown hair. It looks like chocolate. You have pretty, pretty brown hair."
I found out later that Kevin had come down with a really bad cold and wanted to take some cough syrup but didn't have a teaspoon to measure the dosage with. So Kevin, the wonder-genius, concluded that his swallows were approximately a teaspoon each. Consequently, he had gulped an undefined amount of the stuff and was now drunker than beer-can chicken.
Possession of alcohol was against the rules at our small college, so as Paul approached us, he never suspected that Kevin would be completely wasted, and he was positively livid. Paul yanked Kevin off me, shook him like a possessed maniac, and yelled:
"What do you think you're doing? Crystal and I are engaged!"
That, girlfriends, was how he proposed.
Pinning him down to an exact date for our wedding was a little trickier. He kept flitting from let's-do-it-quick-and-get-it-over-with to let's-put-it-off-for-as-long-as-possible. But since he was from Texas and I was from Boston, I simply informed him that I was not going to leave my entire family and travel across a continent unless I had a marriage certificate, signed and dated.
