Talk about a string of bad luck.
Will busied himself, trying to remove the broken hitch, but with all of the rust, it wasn’t budging, not one little bit. Thankfully, Darling, erm, Darla wasn’t quite so stubborn. She’d given up shooting daggers at him with her beautiful eyes and moved back inside the café.
Up until this point, she’d made a point of avoiding him. She’d never given him a chance to apologize—not taking his phone calls right after their breakup and going so far as being off the island any time he visited his father. He could only imagine how much she hated him. He wished he could change her feelings toward him, but he’d resigned himself to the fact that it wasn’t going to happen.
His gaze moved to the broken window of The Lighthouse Café. Inside, Darla stood with her back to him. He couldn’t help but wonder if that was intentional. Was it wrong that he’d hoped with the years that had passed that things would have somehow healed between them?
The sound of a vehicle approaching drew him from his thoughts. Will turned to find a familiar red pickup pulling to a stop. Oh, boy, he hoped the sheriff didn’t catch them. Because neither of their vehicles had a day pass. And he didn’t think the sheriff would be impressed with his story about the urgent necessity to move the sleigh across town.
Ethan Walker climbed out of the pickup with Hannah Bell by his side. “Hey, Will, when did you get back to the island?”
“I flew in this morning.” Will raked his fingers through his hair. “Dad got this great idea about surprising Helen with a sleigh ride after the wedding, but he didn’t realize the sleigh hadn’t been used in a number of years so it’s not in the best condition.”
