Meet Adrian Stannis and Kali Mirren from 'The Empire' and 'The Rebels' by Elizabeth Lang

empire-rebel tour banner 2

Introduction: Adrian Stannis is a physicist and a genius at problem-solving. Not exactly a people person, he's also accompanied by Kali Mirren, the Tellaran telepath who is also his consort. The reason being that without her, he would never be doing this interview.

Interviewer Garvin: Welcome to Rebel Alliance Broadcast, where the ordinary man will always have a voice. With me is Adrian Stannis, one of the greatest heroes of the rebellion and the most wanted fugitive of the Empire. Don't stare at the hyperspatial distortion too long or it might make you queasy.

Adrian: Heroes?

Bryce: (big smile) I think he means us.

Adrian: I thought this was for a scientific journal.

Bryce: (whispers to Kali) Why are we here?

Interviewer Garvin: And his companions.

Kali: I think that means we get the coffee.

Interviewer Garvin: Welcome, honoured rebels.

Adrian: (eyes narrow) I am no rebel and certainly not a hero.

Interviewer: I think many would disagree with you. What you've achieved with your jump gate and the neutron wave weapon will help put an end to the invasion and save our galaxy.

Adrian: You exaggerate.

Interviewer: And with the typical modesty of the true hero.

Adrian: Truth is not modesty.

Interviewer: Of course. (scrolls notes) Now, Mr. Stannis, what is your current occupation?

Adrian: I am a fugitive from justice. A few misguided individuals dare to call me a rebel. Before I escaped, I was a scientist in the field of physics and analytical reasoning.

Interviewer: What do you look like?

Adrian: Are you blind?

Interviewer: This broadcast is audio-only to decrease the bandwidth.

Adrian: You should upgrade your technology.

Kali: Adrian has an aquiline nose and liquid hazel eyes that draw you in. He has strong cheekbones, but delicately drawn as if an artist had taken great care with the features.

Adrian: (strong exhaling sound is heard as he shakes his head.) I think they would prefer the facts and less melodrama.

Kali (smiles and continues): Adrian has straight dark brown hair, slightly longer than a crew-cut, and fair skin, though these days it is tanned due to activities he would prefer to keep to a minimum. He's in his early forties but, when he's relaxed and happy, which unfortunately is rare, he looks to be in his early thirties. His fingers are long and sensitive, just right for tinkering with all kinds of new technology. Height-wise, he's on the tall side, about 6 feet, and has a medium build.

Interviewer: How do you dress?

Adrian: Is this the kind of drivel your listeners are interested in?

Kali: Adrian, you promised to do this.

Adrian (glares then sighs): I have a partiality to leather jackets. Purely for functional reasons. My predominant colour preference is black, though I have been told that I look good in simple contrast colours, whites and blacks. Black T-neck over red leather trousers is an acceptable combination.

Kali: I'm the one who told him that.

Interviewer: What do you wear when you go to sleep?

Adrian (stares): Why should I tell you?

Kali: Adrian considers it a highly personal question…but he does look good without anything.

Adrian: Kali!

Interviewer: In your opinion, what is your best feature?

Adrian: My intelligence, of course and my instinct for self-preservation.

Kali (rolls eyes)

Interviewer: What is your most prized/important possession and why?

Adrian: My mind. I would think that would be obvious.

Interviewer: What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Adrian: Genius. Survivor. And occasionally, Fool.

Kali: Adrian…

Interviewer: What was/is your family like?

Adrian: Dead

Interviewer: Who is your closest friend and why?

Adrian (Pause, glancing surreptitiously at Kali but with a blank look on his face): Kali. She is…easy to work with and…I trust her.

Interviewer: What is your favourite food?

Adrian: Anything that meets my daily nutritional requirements.

Interviewer: What was your childhood like?

Adrian: Isolated.

Interviewer: Can you elaborate?

Adrian: No.

Interviewer: Any criminal record? Oh…strike that question.

Interviewer: What is your darkest secret?

Adrian: If I told you. It wouldn’t be a secret.

Interviewer: What is the best thing that has ever happened to you?

Adrian (pause): Finding Kali.

Kali: Oh.

Interviewer: What do you wish for?

Adrian: A place where I don’t have to answer inane questions.

Interviewer: What scares you the most?

Adrian (pause): Being alone.

Interviewer: What motivates you the most?

Adrian: The need to survive and not be used by others.

Interviewer: Anything else you want to say about yourself?

Adrian: Not particularly. Is this interview over?

Interviewer: Thank you for your time and thank you for tuning in to Rebel Alliance Broadcast.

The Empire

All Adrian Stannis wanted was a quiet corner of the galaxy where he could work on his beloved scientific experiments, but unfortunately, he was born into a world at war, where his people are struggling for survival against a vastly superior alien invasion force and he is a genius who was trained for the very thing he hates, the creation of deadly weapons.

Not to mention, he appears to have been genetically mated to a telepath by his government and he doesn’t find her…uninteresting. In fact, she appears quite intelligent.

So what will happen to this solitary man when his peace is shattered in every way possible and there is nowhere left to run?

The Rebels

Adrian, Kali and Adrian’s personal assistant, Bryce are finally free of the oppressive Empire. They hide on a planet called, Orasis, a tech-4 world on the Outer Rim whose only usefulness is a low-grade source of Tri-Iridium ore. Not the kind of place to find the most advanced weapons scientist in the galaxy. Things go well, relatively, and Adrian and Kali finally have time to develop the relationship they didn’t think possible. Adrian and Bryce even start up their own fix-it business.

Then a stranger arrives on the planet.

About the author:

Elizabeth Lang is first and foremost, a geek with the obligatory love of science fiction and fantasy. She spent most of her life in the computer industry designing computer systems for world domination the mundane industry of life insurance, which is surprisingly, not as exciting as it sounds.

Now she creates enchanted worlds of magic, explores the human condition in the light of future technology and civilizations, and dreams about world domination. Or at least, some of her characters do.

Her first book, The Empire was fortunate enough to be a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards and she has never looked back.
