Waiting for a Miracle

Benjamin Cohen, widowed father of six-year-old Jessie, is doing his best to hold it together through order and routine. The last thing he needs is his matchmaker mother to set him up with her next door neighbor, no matter how attractive she is.

Rachel Schaecter's dream of becoming a foster mother is right within her grasp, until her meddlesome neighbor tries to set her up with her handsome son. What's worse? He's the father of her favorite kindergarten student! She can't afford to let anything come between her and her dream, no matter how gorgeous he may be.

Can these two determined people trust in the miracle of Hanukkah to let love and light into their lives?

Read an excerpt:
When Jessie wanted to make Rachel a Hanukkah card, he’d thought it was a great idea.

“Daddy, you need to sign it, too.”

He’d paused. She’d written “love.” Maybe it was time to let her know he was interested if Rachel hadn’t gotten the hint from his kiss. But a kiss could be accidental. Was his an accident? He hadn’t thought about kissing her ahead of time. If anything, his thoughts were occupied with Rachel’s plans to foster a child, how her plans would change her life, and how those changes would affect his daughter. But desire overtook him, the kiss necessary and natural as breathing, at least to him. So what did it mean?

It meant he wanted to venture outside of the box he’d built for him and Jessie. He wanted to get to know Rachel better and see if she shared the same feelings. She loved kids. She was a great teacher and loved his daughter. Did she want to have children of her own someday? There were so many questions he needed to have answered. So he’d strategized how to get Rachel to fall for him. Throwing caution to the wind, for once in this new life of his, he’d gone ahead and signed his name.

He’d assumed she’d call, if only because his name was on it. Was he stupid? Presumptuous? He had no idea. But he wanted to convince Rachel she was wrong, that they could get to know each other outside of school, without worrying about consequences. He planned for the card to be an opening. She’d made it clear they couldn’t cross the line. He wanted her to see the line was negotiable.

He needed to make his message a little clearer.

**My thoughts**
In the midst of a zillion Christmas romances, it's kind of fun to have one pop up that revolves around Hanukkah. After all, that is a holiday based on a miracle as well, right? So why can't it inspire a miracle in the realm of love?

Rachel and Benjamin are both lonely this holiday season and looking for love, though they are not necessarily consciously aware of it. Rachel's ex-boyfriend had cheated on her and Benjamin's wife died a few years ago. Benjamin's mother is Rachel's neighbor, and she is quite sneaky and adamant about pushing the two of them together. It made me laugh a bit and reminded me of how my parents used to manipulate different situations to do the same thing to me. She means well, though perhaps her methods are a little questionable as she forces the encounters, and not always so gently.

The main obstacle at this point is that Benjamin's daughter Jessie is in Rachel's kindergarten class. Rachel and Jessie do have a special relationship, which I know can happen between a teacher and student, especially a child who is in need of a maternal figure. But oh, dating a parent while the child is in your class can be a huge problem, whether or not it is in the employee handbook. I want to tell them to just hold on until the end of the school year and then themselves go for it. It could be frustrating to wait, but it would cause less disruption and probably fewer problems. And I know Rachel is aching to be a foster mother and is concerned about how this would impact her chances.

Plus they really need some time to get to know each other and to keep working on their communication skills. When Benjamin's wife died, he relied on strict structure to get through each day. Rachel doesn't like that, especially because her ex was so controlling, and it causes a lot of friction between the two of them. If they are going to make this work, they need to take it slow. But in this story, they are off to a good start.

They are definitely attracted to each other. At first I found it odd that they hadn't really interacted prior to this holiday break, so this attraction was new and kind of out of left field for each of them. I had to remember this was a different kind of school than I taught at and you don't have as much parental interaction as I did. I think if they did have that kind of interaction, they would have gotten themselves into trouble with their attraction much earlier!

I appreciate that this is a slow burn kind of a story. It is short, so it whets your appetite for a bit more. But during a crazy holiday season, it's also nice to read a shorter story, because I could do it in one sitting. I do want to revisit them some time in the future to see how things are going.

Thank you to the author and publisher for supplying me with an advanced review copy via Goddess Fish. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About Jennifer Wilck

Jennifer started telling herself stories as a little girl when she couldn’t fall asleep at night. Pretty soon, her head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Even as an adult, she thinks about the characters and stories at night before she falls asleep or walking the dog. Eventually, she started writing them down. Her favorite stories to write are those with smart, sassy, independent heroines; handsome, strong and slightly vulnerable heroes; and her stories always end with happily ever after.

In the real world, she’s the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men she knows. She believes humor is the only way to get through the day and does not believe in sharing her chocolate.

She writes contemporary romance, some of which are mainstream and some of which involve Jewish characters. She’s published with The Wild Rose Press and all her books are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Numan Versus Numan by Nicky Blue

Numan Versus Numan

Having been blown away by seeing Gary Numan perform on Top of The Pops in 1979, Five went out and put an ad in the paper to form a tribute band. He named it 'The Romford Bombers'. They soon went on to dominate the annual Essex battle of the Gary Numan tribute bands. Until last year that is, when 'The Storm Troopers' came out of nowhere and stole their crown.

The Bombers’ 56-year-old lead singer will do whatever it takes to win it back. He also has reason to believe The Storm Troopers are pursuing a hidden agenda, and he’s determined to get to the bottom of it.

Review of Murder on the 4th of July (Ridgeway Rescue Mysteries) by P. Creeden

Murder on the 4th of July

Emma and Molly are in New York City for the 4th of July spending some bonding time with Emma’s new stepmother, Macy. For the holiday, both Colby and her father intend on joining them. When they meet up at a lovely restaurant near the park at Brooklyn Bridge, they are just enjoying their time together before the fireworks display that evening. But when a hostess screams inside for someone to call the police, everything turns upside down.

Their own waitress was murdered in the break room, and the local police can’t come to the crime scene in a timely manner due to holiday traffic. The murder has all the earmarks of a crime of passion, but they can’t be sure who the culprit is, and they can’t find the weapon. Without any evidence, will they be able to solve the case before the perpetrator gets away with murder?

**My thoughts**
Emma is on vacation in New York City with her father, his new bride, and her beloved Colby. When they all meet up for a meal, their server is murdered after taking their payment. Because they are the only law enforcement professionals on the scene, they get to start the investigation until the locals can arrive. As usual, Emma finds out more than anyone else in a matter of minutes.

The girl needs to become an official detective. Although, she is practically a Jessica Fletcher with all of the murders she encounters.

As with the rest of this series, it is a quick and easy read. This one, I did figure out who had done it pretty early. And I have to say I find it interesting that Colby is coming along yet again on what should be a family vacation. We're inching closer and closer to something finally happening.

Review of Jilted (Cliffside Bay Series) by Tess Thompson

Jilted

Despite being young and romantically inexperienced, Sophie Woods is an old soul who believes in true love, working hard at her bar, and always trusting her instincts. And from the moment she meets Nico, she knows without a doubt that he is her one-and-only. Twelve years her senior, the handsome architect is only sure of two things when it comes to Sophie: she’s far too young for him, and he wants no part in upsetting her protective older brother.

Broke and broken, Nico Bentley moves to Cliffside Bay for a fresh start at both work and play. But in a cruel twist of fate, it’s the one woman he can’t have whose captivating smile makes him forget all about his past. Yet when tragedy turns the vivacious Sophie into a shell of her former self, it will be Nico, and only Nico, who steps up to bring the joy back into her life. And in the process, the depth of his feelings for her can no longer be ignored.

In this installment of USA Today bestselling author Tess Thompson’s beloved Cliffside Bay Series, return to the small town that warms your heart and take a trip halfway across the world to discover hope, healing, and the importance of happiness.

**My thoughts**
Both Nico and Sophie have extremely difficult and twisted pasts. Sophie has enjoyed a happier life than Nico and isn't nearly as bitter as he is. Right away, we get introduced to these pasts. If you've been following the series, you probably already knew some. But this intro helps to keep the possibility of this book being a standalone. But really, you 'll want to read them all!

They are super close friends with so much in common and have an undeniable attraction to each other. Sophie already knows he is her soulmate. Nico just can't get out of his head long enough to acknowledge his own heart.

This one is a smidge spicier than the others, but fear not. It is still a sweet and clean romance.

I also have to say that I adore Judi Coventry and not just for her name. She is fiesty and spunky and tells it like it is. She also has a big heart, even if she won't admit it. I hope we get to see her some more!

Thank you to the author and publisher for an advanced review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review of Murder at a Wedding (A Ridgeway Rescue Mystery) by P. Creeden

Murder at a Wedding

Emma’s father, Sheriff Wright, is getting married. Though Emma feels a wee bit jealous that another woman is taking her father away from her, Emma’s determined to be grown up about it. Both she and Molly have a part in the small ceremony. But when they arrive at the restaurant, a man falls from the fourth floor of the parking garage.

Only one person is witness to the incident upstairs, but she’s claiming she’s a victim, herself. Things aren’t quite adding up in the victim’s claims, though, but Emma doesn’t want to ruin the occasion with one of her theories. Still, the question remains—was it an accident or was it murder?

**My thoughts**
Emma's father is suddenly getting married and she isn't sure what she thinks about it. And of course, just as people are beginning to arrive for the rehearsal dinner, there is a murder.

They seem to quickly get over the trauma and go to the dinner celebration, inviting the woman who was claiming the deceased was trying to attack her. I have a hard time understanding how Renee so easily came to a stranger's intimate wedding just two days after her hubby was murdered. And she is fine staying at her house with the bloody mess in the other room. Possibly part of the twists and turns in the quick plot?

At least Emma's relationship with Colby is starting to heat up in this one. :)

Being here brought back so many warm memories for her, like sunshine chasing away all her shadows. The reality was, though some things seemed the same, their lives were very different than what they had been. She needed to keep that in mind.

Kami ran a hand through her damp hair and suppressed another shiver. She caught chills easily; that hadn’t changed. Back in the day, no matter what season it was, Jonah would be hot and she’d always be cold. He usually had his arm around her to warm her up, though. That was one thing she wished hadn’t changed, even if it was just for tonight.

The salad course had just been served when Leah became aware of movement behind her. She turned her head to see what was going on and nearly dropped the dinner roll she’d been in the act of buttering. Under her astonished gaze, Dr. Levy sat down in the empty seat beside her.

After thanking the waitress for a menu and asking for coffee, he turned to Leah and smiled. “Hello, again. If I wasn’t so sure you don’t like me, I’d begin to think you’re following me.”

This provocative greeting broke the spell she’d fallen under. “I was here first, so the person doing the following is you.”

It could be zero degrees out here, and he could stand next to her and not feel it. He glanced back at the window, catching a few people watching them, and shifted into the darkness on the other side of the fire. He glanced around them.

“What is it?” she asked in a whisper.

He looked down at her, turning so that he faced her, blocking them both from anyone determined to find them. “Looking for mistletoe,” he teased.

The door ripped open and she came face to face with Robin. Same laughing eyes, same devilish look under hawk-like brows. His dirty-brown hair had curled up in a stylish mess. He’d come straight from her memories—though older and more dashing, like he’d stepped through the glossy covers of those gossip magazines she despised. He was tall and strong, with broad shoulders and an athletic build—a modern day Robin Hood in black t-shirt and faded jeans. And she hated it!

His almond-shaped eyes turned appreciative when he saw her. “Are you new?”

As the starting time (for the 10k race) arrived, (my blind date) Mitch announced that he wanted to be at the front of the crowd. I followed him with heavy feet. How was I supposed to look all athletic and charming while moving my body in a way it wasn’t familiar with? Not to mention my lungs. My poor lungs were about to have the fight of their life.

I was saved having to overthink it by the sound of a gunshot. My first thought was to duck, but others around me took off running, and I managed to keep from embarrassing myself thanks to my instinctual herd mentality. When everyone around you is running, you run.

“Alivia, seriously. Just breathe,” my roommate, Naomi, reminded me, which was easy for her to say. She wasn’t about to pitch her manuscript to an editor. She hadn’t been given an hour’s notice that a time slot had opened for a consultation. She didn’t have to convince an editor in ten minutes that her book was good enough for a publishing contract. Sean tipped his chin, looking over Matt’s shoulder. “The woman walking up the driveway.”

Matt turned to look, but the sun had moved slightly and the glare on the hood blinded him. He squeezed his eyes shut, rubbed them, but still saw spots as he tried to focus on the figure coming toward them. Shoes hit the pavement in clipped measure and then stopped. Meanwhile, he couldn’t make out anything but a vague outline of this person with hands planted on her hips.

I was now in my mid-twenties, and I still made a habit of going with him when I could.

The Suite Life by Brooke St. James #RomBks4Chris19

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

The Suite Life

(The Family Stone #1)
By Brooke St. James
Christian Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 256 Pages
August 14th 2018 by Blue House Press

I was completely exhausted when I first laid eyes on him. I had been traveling, and for the last twenty-four hours, sleep had evaded me. I knew I looked terrible, and I was relatively sure I didn't smell so great, either. It was not the most ideal moment to make a first impression. On a normal day, I wouldn't be so torn up about it, but today was different. This was the day I met Taylor.

He was a gentleman in every way. I was instantly taken aback by his vintage look and charm. It was almost like he had stepped out of the past. I would only be in Boston for two days before traveling again, and I was determined to get a second chance at a first impression.

Excerpt

People always asked me how it was being Alec Stone's daughter, but the truth was, I didn't have anything to compare it to. I had grown up with my dad being in the spotlight. I didn't know anything else.

My parents divorced when I was three-years-old, and my mom moved to Ventura to be closer to her parents. She took me and my older sisters with her. Dad stayed in Los Angeles. Ventura wasn't all that far, and we still saw him on a regular basis, but we flew under the radar and had a relatively normal childhood considering the fact that we were Alec Stone's daughters. I was the youngest by four years, and I had always been Dad's sidekick—traveling with him more often than my sisters did. I was now in my mid-twenties, and I still made a habit of going with him when I could.

"Is your dad playing a show?" Josh asked drawing me from my thoughts. "I forgot to ask him when I saw him yesterday. I haven't seen any billboards or anything. He did say you were only staying a few days."

I shook my head. "He's not doing a show—unless you count singing the anthem."

"The anthem? At the football game?"

I nodded. It was something Dad had done before, so Josh didn't seem that surprised.

"When's that?" Josh asked.

"Tomorrow."

"Are you tired from your trip?" he asked.

"I'm sooo exhausted," I said. "I can't sleep on planes. I'm gonna climb into that bed as soon as I get upstairs. I'm gonna fall asleep and not wake up for like ten hours—maybe twelve."

We were standing near the side of the elevator when I said that. The door had opened as we were speaking, but I didn't pay attention to the people who were getting off. I just stood close to Josh and kept my head down, staring at the tile floors and waiting for them to clear the way. A pair of leather oxfords came into my line of vision.

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but hear you," a voice said.

It was a guy's voice—no doubt the same guy who belonged to the shoes. He was talking to me, but I hesitated to acknowledge him. I was devastated with exhaustion, and I was almost certain that he recognized me and just wanted to make conversation because he was a fan of my father's.

"I know Josh is taking great care of you, but I couldn’t help but hear you say you were going to try to sleep when you got to your room."

I glanced at him, and he gave me an easy smile.

"I'd be happy to get you a white noise machine," he said. "We don't have them in all of the rooms, but it always helps me rest if I have a little fan or something in the background."

I stared at him, barely even taking in the words he was saying. I was relatively sure he was offering me some kind of sleeping device, but I could not concentrate on the words that were coming out of his mouth. I didn't know if it was the exhaustion or the fact that he looked like he did.

He was not what I expected at all. He was an all-American slice of heaven—a leading man, someone you'd see on the cover of a romance novel. He had a square jaw and chin with features that were either chiseled or rounded in all the right places. He had light eyes and dark hair that was carefully combed away from his face with just enough hair product. He was clean shaven, but I could see faint patches of dark facial hair on his jaw. He was perfect and polished. The care and time he had taken on his own appearance made him seem reminiscent of times past—a day in age when men took time to get dressed and shined their shoes. He was so comforting to look at that I felt like I knew him—or at the very least like we had met before.

Meet the members of Oregon Mountain Search and Rescue and watch them fall in love in Hood Hamlet with a little help from Christmas magic.

In His Christmas Wish, Jake Porter is burdened by guilt, believing he could have saved two friends during a climbing accident and kept Carly Bishop from the heart-wrenching loss of her fiancé and brother. Is their new relationship strong enough to withstand the truth?

A surprise kiss under the mistletoe sparks a three-alarm fire, but something is holding her back. Will Christian’s kisses break through Leanne’s tough exterior and melt her heart?

In His Christmas Family, Bill Paulson invites two wayward travelers into his home. Something about Grace Wilcox, a widow, and her young son touches Bill’s heart, so he decides to give them a special Christmas. When attraction flares between Grace and Bill, she won’t gamble her heart on a hero and Bill doesn’t consider himself husband material. Can a little Christmas magic show them love and a family are worth the risks?

Over six feet tall with brown hair that fell past his collar, he still had piercing blue eyes, a killer smile, and a hot, hard body that made the girls, herself included, swoon back in high school. Those features had only improved with age.

Her pulse kicked up a notch. “What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you.” His grin widened, the same way it had whenever he and Nick teased her. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry…” Simply thinking the word left a bitter taste in her mouth. She couldn’t bring herself to say it. “Season’s greetings. Where’s Hannah?”

“At a doctor’s appointment,” Jacob explained. “Garrett drove her. She didn’t know if they’d be home by the time you arrived or before the school bus dropped off Kendall and Austin, so they asked me to come over.”

Carly noticed Jacob’s clothes—a light blue button-down oxford shirt, khaki pants, and brown leather shoes. A bit more stylish than the T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers she remembered him wearing. He must have come from work.

“Thank you.” Though she wasn’t surprised. Jacob had always gone out of his way for them, a surrogate everything to what remained of the Bishop family. He’d found her the job in Philadelphia. He’d taught Nick’s two kids to ski and fish. He’d even introduced Hannah to Garrett.

“Come inside before you get too cold.” Jacob reached for Carly’s suitcase. His hand—big, callused, and warm—brushed hers. The accidental contact startled her, and she jerked away. “You city girls aren’t used to the temperatures up here.”

Forget the cold. She wasn’t used to her response to his touch. That was unusual for her. “Philadelphia gets cold, too.”

As she stepped inside, heat surrounded Carly, cocooning her with the inviting comforts of home. The homey touches—a fleece blanket on a chair, throw pillows, candles, and framed photos—were ones missing from her apartment.

His gaze ran the length of her. “You look the same.”

He looked better. “So does this place.”

And that somehow made everything…worse.

An Agent for Bernadette (The Pinkerton Matchmaker Series) by Jo Grafford

An Agent for Bernadette

Poor little rich girl Bernadette Chambers is weary of being told what to do. All her life, she’s been instructed how to dress, how to act, and who she is allowed to befriend. However, she draws the line at being told she has to marry a man she’s never met, even if refusing to marry him means being cut off from her family’s wealth.

Realizing she’ll need a job to support herself, she decides to become a Pinkerton Agent, only to discover she’ll be required to marry a fellow agent (at least in name only) before receiving her first case.

Park Harrington is a shipping tycoon by day and an agent by night, which leaves him little time for courting. When the oldest daughter of his family’s greatest competitor refuses to honor their arranged marriage, he despairs of ever finding a suitable woman to lead to the altar. When he finds out the name of the Lady Pinkertons' newest recruit is none other than the spoiled debutante who refused his hand in marriage, he decides to get revenge. He personally requests to be matched to her!

Read an excerpt:
“You can’t be serious, Father!” Bernadette Chambers stared, aghast, at James Fitzgerald Chambers III, shipping magnate extraordinaire and owner of Chambers & Sons Industries. “Why should I be the first to marry among my siblings? I’m not even the oldest.”
Her father’s dark gaze pierced her from his position at the head of their dinner table, as he settled back in his throne-like chair. He twirled one end of his mustache, a gesture he made only when he was supremely annoyed. “You’ve been promised to Park Harrington since the day you were born, daughter, and he is ready to collect on that promise."
